Looks like a great price. $250 cheaper than Scorptec.

  • +26

    it's an improvement.

  • +1

What card is this equivalent to nvidia counter part? 4070 Ti?

    • +5

Bit better than 4070 ti worse that 4080

    • +6

Raw performance maybe a 4070ti if it had 20gb, but hard to compare as AMD drivers, software, and VR performance is a bit worse compared to nvidia.

      • Not really true, nvidia drivers have a large amount of overhead on the CPU. This means if you don't have a top of the line CPU that can keep up you'll be heavily penalized. A good example is here: https://www.techspot.com/review/2627-hogwarts-legacy-benchma… even with a 7700x the nvidia drivers can't keep up resulting in a 4090 losing out to even a 6800. Obviously larger resolutions this is less of an issue as lower fps will be lower cpu overhead.

    • +10

yeah 4070ti with 4070ti being better in RT, VR, lower power consumption
and XT having more fps usually - pick your poison

      • RT does not really mean much. Can I get a source on the VR aspect though, AMD has that usb c port I thought

        • +1

Just google it , AMD stutters in VR and has lots of synthetic frames , NVIDIA seems solid

          • +3

@botchie: I mean you did make the claim ..

          • @botchie:

            has lots of synthetic frames

I'm unsure what you mean by "synthetic frames"?

            • +1

@ssfps: Frames are made of digital synthetic material

            • @ssfps: I think its the frame insertion tech that VR uses to get higher frame rates. In Steam VR its called motion reprojection, Oculus its something different (cbf'd googling atm).

Presumably the assertion is the AMD cards are problematic with frame pacing or whatever, so it tends to need more reprojected frames…

              • +1

@tephra: Thanks, when i searched "synthetic frame" i got no hits that looked right, but "reprojection" works. If i understand right, it's a fancy interpolation between 2 frames, either a frame rendered based on extrapolated camera position/angle (i.e. user's position data), or a frame in the past (which must surely introduce a fixed latency).

Makes me wonder why they are only using this tech for VR when it sounds like a reasonable alternative to upscaling tech like DLSS - i.e. extrapolating over time intervals rather than extrapolating resolution.

                • @ssfps: We already have something available that's similar with DLSS 3 and coming later on down the line with FSR 3 that does interpolation of frames, I'm assuming to actually extrapolate frames instead we'd need to rewrite game engines to be compatible.

                  • @cheng2008: I see, i didn't know DLSS3 was so different to earlier versions.

need to rewrite game engines to be compatible.

I'm sure that would enhance the effect, but it sounds like they're able to do this purely at the driver level. The driver already has access to enough data to make a guess at motion in the image, although of course more info from the game engine would surely improve that.

Also, this excerpt from an article seems to confirm my suspicion that such tech would increase latency due to extrapolation of frames

DLSS 3 frame generation also increases input latency, even if it increases the frame rate. What this creates is a weird situation where frame rate increases, but latency increases as well – usually when gaming, higher frame rates lead to lower latency, and therefore a more responsive experience.

I tested 120 FPS with frame generation, 120 FPS without frame generation, and 60 FPS without frame generation and the DLSS 3 frame generation results were most like the 60 FPS normal rendering results – which isn't a huge surprise as the latency numbers suggest this would be the case.

Pretty interesting tech, though not useful to me personally as i'd rather run down-scaling from 8K on old games instead of upscaling or interpolating frames for GPU-intense modern ones.

Waiting for a similar discount on the 7900xtx

    • +15

      waiting for sub 1k 4070ti

      • +2

Wait for a year, I have monitored gpu prices for years… At least a year is what it's gonna take

      • gonna be waiting awhile

  • +11

My used RTX 3080 for $700 Second hand still looks a good purchase close to those deals.

    • +11

Pretty much any purchase about 6mo ago is making all of these deals look decidedly average. Prices have been bitterly disappointing since amd refused to come to the party with their 7000 series.

    • +8

All I see on marketplace is people are asking $900-$1k on used 3080s and ti closer to $1300 like might as well just get a 4070ti but I guess they are dreamers or bought at the height of covid and are ignorant

      • +1

If sellers wanna be gimps, then it's ok for you to critically lowball them. In fact we need to gather all of ozbargain to mass lowball all the sellers in every market.

      • +5

There are a few special sellers who want $2500 for their 10gb 3080's around my area, listings have been up for weeks. I've had to hold myself back from messaging and roasting them multiple times 😂

  • For reference how much faster is this than a 6800 xt.

    • in what? rt? heaps
      vr - heaps
      2k FPS- not much 10-15%

      • +1

        4k gaming.

I have a rule to only upgrade if 40% performance increase.

Xtx is the best option when that comes in price I guess

        • A 7900XT would be very borderline for the upgrade you're chasing, even an XTX is barely over 50% faster.

    • +3

About 20 fps depending on game at 1440p/4k at raster, for RT it beats the 6950 XT by about 10-20 fps at Ultra

    • +1

Not sure how accurate techpowerup are but supposedly 25% faster. https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-7900-xt.c391…

  • +7

Amazing - there's no Australia tax on that price. At this point in time AUD $1299 is about USD $900, which is the US price of the card.

    • +5

which is weird as USD $900 is yet to include our 10% GST, so probably unofficial USD price is closer now to $800?

  • +6

I would probably buy at another 200 off. Slowly coming down.

  • +9

If it reaches 999 ill buy for sure

    • +2

Exactly what I was thinking 🙂

  • +17

    not buying until it's $6

    • not sure why you're downvoted, i appreciate the humor.

  • If you were looking to upgrade from a pretty average GPU - say a 2060 or 1070 or something - and wanted to crank up the FPS in 1080p or 1440p - then this card at this price would be worth considering.

    • Yes for 1440, no for 1080p

    • You'd still have to be pretty desperate at this price.

Anyone who can wait, should. Prices certainly aren't looking to stay this high much longer.

  • +2

happy 7900 XT owner here, granted I scored mine second hand for $1000, still a good price, $1200 and I'd jump at it

    • +1

1000 is about what Id pay for it.

    • wow I wonder who was that unhappy to sell a few months old card 500+ hundred below retail.

      • yea look I thought it was too good to be true, some bloke who needed more grunt (bought a 4090 instead) for work purposes, time poor and not worried about cash, not the norm!

  • Won't consider 7900xt unless it's marginally cheaper than 4070ti. AMD sucks at driver, RT, etc

    • +1

For 2k and below, yes. For 4k, 4070 ti is already dead due to pathetic 12gb vram, not to say in 2-3 years. 4k gaming 3090 would be a better choice over 4079 ti, although similar performance for now.

This 7900 xt is not ideal for 4k either, but due to the 20gb vram, it will survive much longer.

      • +1

When the VRAM amount is low in 2 to 3 years, the chip will be less capable as well for decent 4K gaming in the future. So just lessen a couple of settings down to bring the vram usage to 12GB and you all good. Remember DLSS2 and DLSS3 would have far improved by then.

        • +1

Dlss is not even a selling point, considering there is FSR as universal thing. Stop repeating what nvidia told you.

Nvidia’S vram has been a continuous issue, I saw a 3060 12gb vram out perform 3080 10gb due to 3080 vram exploded in the new game HWL.

Why nvidia release a 12gb 3060? While 3070, 3080 are only 8gb and 10gb? Now same shit happened on 4070 ti again!

          • -1

@simonlee1: I use a 3080Ti to drive a 4k display. Have tried both DLSS and FSR and I switch to DLSS as its much better. Dont care what others say, I find it better in most instances.

12GB is an edge point but I got a good deal on 3080ti hence didnt bother looking for a 3090. i wouldnt have purchased a 3080 10GB anyway. And I whole heartedly agree nv has the most screwed up VRAM allocation.

But would I buy a 4070Ti at a good price? Definitely without worrying about VRAM, but i have no need for it.

          • @simonlee1: so true bro, these green fanboys love justifying paying more for less in some form

    • Never had any issues with AMD drivers, and I've had nearly every other gen card since x800 pro AGP. So how did you come to your thoughts apart from just spreading deception and lies? Yep RT isnt as good as 40 series however its not a feature competitive gamers use!?

  • +1

Silly me jumped the gun and genuinely thought this was the XTX for a minute there. Sad.

  • +1

    Hold

  • Considering the poor technical state of many new PC games, I don’t see the added value of high-end PC gaming. Do yourself a favour and buy a PS5.

    • Yeah hasn't been any decent games for a few years now

    • Accurate statement.

But it's not about gaming it's about the thrill of the FPS figures. Like car enthusiasts chasing quarter mile times.

      • +1

There's nothing else in world like the thrill of triple digit fps on a 60hz monitor. ;)

    • 30 60 and 90 FPS all feel a lot different. Even 120 feels a lil better than 90. I realised that when i upgraded the old 1080 to 3080Ti.

  • -3

Decent but it's AMD and AMD can't be trusted with Drivers and stable hardware. Have had so many problems since Ryzen 1700X, 3700X - will eventually move away from AMD completely including GPUs

    • +1

I never had any problems with thier CPUs, but I wouldnt pay this much for thier GPU.

      • -2

I'm putting my old Sandy Bridge 2700K system back together to elimate my GPU as the issue. Failing that it might be my RAM on the Ryzen system which is the only component I haven't changed since my issues started randomly back in 2017

        • Good luck with your trouble shooting. Also may I ask what the issue is?

          • -2

@John Doh: The description for Event ID 0 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

            \Device\Video3
            Error occurred on GPUID: b00

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table

            • -2

@motion2082: Only happens randomly since I upgraded to Ryzen over multiple games

              EVGA GTX1080TI SC2

              • +1

@motion2082: Random question… Have you tried running default 1080ti clocks and not the slight overclock the SC2 comes with as standard?

And… try running each RAM stick by itself, assuming you have two sticks.

                • @nitens: Yeah have tried standard clocks, overclock and undervolt. Same result. Will try removing a RAM stick to see if that makes a difference

                  • +1

@motion2082: Couple of things I can add, try a different GPU, try an old nvidia driver and see if it resolves, I assume you already did a fresh install of windows. Too bad 3700x dont come with integrated igpu. Also assuming BIOS of both GPU and MOBO upto date.

                  • +3

@motion2082: Yeah… Run with one stick and see if she's stable then swap them. If you're lucky you may be able to isolate a sketchy stick. Good luck.

            • @motion2082: bases his problem with a AMD cpu powered system, blames all AMD GPUs and drivers?? lol I've had nearly every generation of GPU since x800 pro. ony issue was r9 290 in crossfire performance in some titles….

Sounds like you have other issues not related to Amd cpu/gpu

  • I'm still waiting on my 6800 xt from a previous deal (amazon) - Is it worth cancelling and going with this?

    • It depends on the 6800 xt deal price and your requirements. This would give local warranty and definitely a lil future proof.

      • I paid $824 for the 6800 xt.

In short, the other components are:
        - ASUS X670e-i
        - Ryzen 7600
        - DDR5 32gb
        - 750w PSU (I think this is the minimum requirement for the 7900 xt which I am a little concerned about. Wondering if future driver updates will drop the 7900 xt power consumption)

        1440p gaming - I do have a 4k screen also but wasn't planning on gaming at 4k.

        • +2

If you dont game at 4k, I wouldnt worry and save that 500. GPU prices will surely fall in the coming months.

          • @John Doh: Can't see any real decent price drops until Q2, NGreedia/AMD are patient capitalists

  • +1

i have cancelled the 6800xt and got the 7900xt in msy today. No regret

    • Can you let me know if it has the vapor chamber issue… My friend is planning on getting one as well.

      • Isn't that an XTX issue only?

      • That's XTX reference models only

      • GPU Temp is 65 C atm with three monitors, one 144hz 2k, one 75hz 2k, one FHD. pretty smooth

        • Thank you! I thought both the xtx and xt use the same cooling design but yea good to hear everything is going great.

          • @VoidIvory: Picked up today - Cool, quiet on latest drivers. If you are on the fence, do it!

  • Not selling out at this price? Must have a ways to go yet price wise.

    • +2

Only sold like 8 units, a decent price now but not much of an improvement compared to 6900 xt @ $999 back in the days.

  • oooooh this one is tempting, finally reaching real prices. if this wasnt the reference model i would jump on it

    • why not reference model?

      • have heard theyre very noisy, especially the coil whine, and would worry about the cooling capacity especially since i have an itx build
