    Cheaper from LZB Storage Store

    1TB: US$100.10 (~A$146.06)

    2TB: US$206.36 (~A$301.11)

Took only 8 days from order to delivery.

    • Was there any particular tools needed to swap them? I’ve got a kit of small screwdrivers already

      • +1

        Screwdrivers ✅
        Fingers ?◽

Set of small screwdrivers is sufficient

      • Was there any particular tools needed to swap them?

        For the Steam Deck?

Plastic prying tools like the ones included in the kits below or you can improvise and use a guitar pick, old credit card, etc.

      • I couldn't find my pick. Ended up using this method -

      • Be careful as well, make sure you use the right size driver. The screws in the steam deck seem to be made of very soft metal and have a bit of threadlock on them too.

7 of 8 of the backplate screws came out fine, but the last one stripped its head and wouldnt budge. Was very hard to remove and had to resort to a flat driver and bit of rubber band to get it out.

Well done, the community thanks you for your service

  • Not for Surfacebook 3 as indicated above, SB3 takes 2280

    • +1

I was under the impression that a smaller length M.2 SSD (eg 2230) works in a bigger slot (eg 2280)?

      • +2

It will connect but you need to fasten the screw as a counterweight to its springiness. Not all cases will have variable mounting points for said screw

        • Ah. Makes sense. Could you apply thermal padding or something to hold it down as an alternative?

          • @Guybrush57: Yep, as long as you can make it push against something then you're good.

          • @Guybrush57: There are adapters, just a stamped metal plate essentially. Haven't checked if they're easily available but my laptop came with one - came with 2230 but can take a full 2280 so they use a 2230+adapter to span the length.

          Can u use sticky tape??

          • +1

            @Homr: Can you? Sure.

Should you.. as long as you got the tape on bargain?

          • @Homr: Yes - not ideal but it can be done

Is anyone else amazed at how small this thing is?

It has been a while since I looks at computer parts but back then a SSD was 1/4 of the size of the HDD and I thought that was game changing… This blew my mind

    • +3

You had me at the first sentence

    • +1

They're all dramless though which accounts for some of the size on larger nvme drives.

Seen a 1tb micro sd card lately? :D We have come a long way.

      • -1

        1TB? Pfft. We're up to 1.5TB now

      • I have no idea what dramless is but… SD cards are 1TB now?! I thought we plateaued ages ago… and I thought I was relatively up to date with tech. Goodness.

  • Huh.

2TB description with lower sequential write and random read

  • How would this compare with the Sabrent Rocket in a Steam Deck?

    • This one is cheaper.

  • Brought a 2tb for the steam deck. Will see.

  • +1

Excuse my ignorance, I thought AliExpress didn't sell "real western brand" items, or did so at higher cost than here (eg Lego)
And I thought AliExpress was a bad place to buy storage?

    • +2

These (2230 SSDs) are usually bulk OEM stuff that maybe too expensive to even create fakes. Besides it’s OK to tell fakes and real ones apart for things like this. Warranty is a bigger problem you should rather consider.

      • I see. I have questions about both. How do you check, since I can't very well put in my desktop and run a test program.

I have a surface laptop3 and 128gb makes it not useful now. This might be better than trying to sell it and buy a new one. I could live with 512 or 1tb.

I assume Warranty won't exist at all.

But any local ones I've seen were like $400, hardly worth vs device value.

        • +1

As far as I can tell, most WD and Kioxia 2230 SSDs are single chipped, everything in one package. This contrasts from things like WD CH SN530 ("the XBOX SSD") and Sabrent, which still comes with NAND and controller on separate chips. I personally doubt there are fake single chip 2230 SSDs out there, but YMMY. Also it seems there's no trivial DIY kit for any PCIe Gen4 SSD controllers out there yet nor accompanying production softwares leaked (correct me if I'm wrong) so it's unlikely there will be very badly hand made PCIe Gen 4 SSDs out there.

Scammers can still switch or forge labels, but with encrypted firmwares, it's unlikely they'll be able to fake capacity on known-brand SSDs with smaller capacity, so just plug in your drive (to a computer or USB enclosure), and check the data with CDI. The most common scams though are zeroing SMART information for Chia-abused drives, but that's usually for Samsung and some enterprise drives.

    • bought many a thing with no issue from aliexpress, there's just stuff you cant get from local stores sometimes, mainly niche CPU coolers on my half

      • I've bought many things that don't exist locally, but never a 'branded' item

        • i mean technically things ive bought were a brand, thermalright is a company

  • Which is better SN740 or SN530 for the Surface Pro 7+?

  • Nice

  • -2

I so want to, but AliExpress is a no above $100 ticket items.

    • +1

Paypal can help you there, surely?

    • Cool story. Thanks for letting us know your arbitrary spend limit.

You still butt hurt from the last encounter. Assexpress is only good for up to 100. What's it to you.

        Llhfree = Left Hand Free
user name checks out, I now know what you do with it …

        • +3

          What are you on about?

          That's an "i", btw.

Personally, I've bought items over $100 without any issue. It's the same as any marketplace site. You need to assess each seller.

  • Could also work as a second drive in laptops with a dedicated (and empty) WWAN slot. For instance, older T-series Thinkpads have a spare 2240 slot. Would need an adapter to secure it, but they exist.

edit: if you have a spare slot, be sure to check its keying, these are M-keyed, thinkpads like the T14 are B+M, so this wouldn't work.

    • thinkpads like the T14 are B+M

      B+M sockets don't exist.

The socket is either B or M.

      Module can be B, M or B+M.

    Copy from description

DOES NOT WORK IN SP8 - Some of these SSDs will crash constantly in SP8 and some will not. We tested it in our SP8 and it seems completely random; we could not tell why some worked and some did not.

    • +4

It gives me a bit more confidence to see that they're honest enough to admit when it doesn't work for a device they tested.

  • Just ordered one for my steam deck thanks!

  • urge to upgrade my 1TB steam deck to 2TB growing…

In my Steam deck. So far, so good.

I would have gotten the WD instead but it was a lot more expensive 2 weeks ago.
