It's pretty much a subsidy for the poor power companies (this is where the money ends up) :-(

    • +2

No, it's fungible money given to you. It only ends up where you put it (e.g. your bank account, a holiday in Bali, wherever).

    • +5

It's closer to the opposite, it's encouraging people to pay their power company less money.

  • +4

Ridiculous - another handout. This is purely inflationary, and nakedly political (hence they advertise it a "Labor Government" action, when most government actions don't name the party in power).

And it's funded by debt too - this isn't "free money", it's just borrowing from yourself in the future but also having to pay interest on it, AND cop the ensuing inflation in the form of higher prices.

Every time we do sh*t like this, Phil Lowe of the RBA sighs and cranks up the rates next month.

    • Can we get some of the WA budget surplus pls ? Anyway a few peanuts isn't go to cause inflation .

      • +1

This will be $500 handed out to every citizen, just in this handout policy alone.

When will it stop being "peanuts"?

The point is we have high and persistent inflation, we shouldn't be handing cash out at all, let alone spending $950,000,000 on it (based on figures above).

        • +1

Your figures are fundamentally accurate from what we've read here, however, the payments are not paid to 'every citizen '.
          Only per account holder.
This is a snapshot from the last Census for Victoria:
Victoria. The Census usual resident population of Victoria in 2021 was 6,503,491, living in 2,810,775 dwellings with an average household size of 2.52. This page provides the three population counts for Victoria at the last Census, with comparisons to previous Census years for the Census counts only.

So, $500 to each Citizen, rounded, would come to $3.25B. But we understand that's not the case.
However, interestingly, if each of the 2.8M dwellings in Victoria had services connected, and therefore one account holder per dwelling, then the potential payout by Vic Gov could theoretically be as high as $1.4B, IF every account holder lodges a claim. Vastly more than the estimated $900M we are suggesting here.
On the surface, and assuming my logic and figures are correct, this would suggest a considerable high percentage of eligible payees have not claimed, or may be ineligible for whatever reason.
Otherwise, our $ commitment to this Government 'action' could be substantially greater than it is.
          It's not peanuts.

    • +2

Have an upvote for being accurate.

    • Yep make it 50 dollars.

Only poor people would do it.

Rich people be like it's not worth my time

  • Awesome

  • Can we get some free money to SA rentpayers pls

Oh wait nvm it's SA that'll never happen

    • VIC Government already tax the shit out of us so it is piss in the ocean to get some back..

      • The Highest taxing governments have been Liberal governments

        https://apo.org.au/node/315625

        https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-12-13/fact-check-is-the-coa…

        • Is that due to receipts or tax rises though?

LNP seemed to inherit high receipts and then cut taxes

          • @Wolfenstein98k: Not the case. LNP couldn't be the highest taxing unless they implemented higher taxes. Howard and the most recent mob were in a decade plus.

Don't believe the Murdoch mainstream media narrative. They have reasons for backing conservative parties.

            • @arcticmonkey: That's dumb.

If they are in office during a mining boom or big increase in natural resources prices (such as ScoMo was during invasion of Ukraine), then their receipts grow massively without changing taxes.

They actually cut taxes during this time - you might have heard of "Stage 3 tax cuts"? That's because they already did Stages 1 and 2. They also did the LAMITO.

You can't just look at aggregate receipts and assume they increased taxes. You have to use your brain a little bit.

Saying boogeyman words like "Murdoch" and "narrative" doesn't absolve you of having to actually find evidence for your claims.

              • @Wolfenstein98k: I did. See links above.

                Where's your evidence?

                • @arcticmonkey: Your links confirm my claim. It's due to bracket creep and resources prices.

Abbott is the only one who increased taxes with his 2% "rich tax". The rest has been tax cuts.

  • how long did it take you to receive the money in your bank account? I applied for the last one on the 11th and still waiting.

    • +1

I did it last July and it took 7 days then.

    • pretty quick if you choose bank account to receive the payment. A mate choose cheque and took him agessssssss… LOL

  • +3

All the other States and Territories got ripped off with the new Federal Agreement with WA permitting them to keep so much of our profits from our resources . Next WA state budget surplus I have no doubt double figure billion surplus coming .

    • All good mate. Tas here continuing to be a bottomless pit syphoning money to fill this bottomless black hole.

    • +1

Yep the Liberal Feds paid off WA for votes at a massive ongoing cost to the rest of the nation.

    • can you forward those incentives to nsw too pls since no one wants to live in WA and they can't spend on themselves?

  • +2

    More inflation stimulus cheques?

    • +2

Electricity companies jacking up their prices is already fueling inflation. The effect of $250 that's handed out here is offset by a more competitive electricity/gas retail market which is its main intention.

    • -1

      Yes please Comrade Albanese.

  • are there any incentives like this for NSW or ACT? I dont have pension card to subsidise.

  • thanks vic

  • VIC FTW

  • +2

    Multi layered scam

  • what deal is for NSW?

    • +4

You keep flipping between LNP/Coalition premiers. Their focus is on avoiding a knife in the back or helping wealthy donors vs helping citizens

    • +1

Your deal is a brand spanking new $800 million fish market.

  • +2

Do the energy compare and then go buy a couple of blocks of cheese with the payment… win-win

    • im going to buy a bag of chips and a single capsicum with mine!

  • +2

This free money should have been handed out during recession with falling prices not in high inflation market

  • Government brakes your leg, then gives you a crutch and says "See, if not for us, you wouldn't be able to walk!"

    • I won't be downvoting you, but are you still living in VIC?

      • +1

Unfortunately due to family commitments I am stuck in Victoria until the end of the year but I've already started packing in anticipation to flee.

        • -2

Have an upvote for actually moving away.

If only I could set a reminder to make sure you're gone by next year.

    • Soooo, you wont be partaking in this?

    • The use of subvertly, and the fact that you are posting political commentary on Ozbargain, is how I know you are an intellectual.

  • My Feb 9 submission still hasnt been approved.

  • Comrade Dan doing god's work (or should I say Mao's?). Love how people interstate are getting butthurt over it though.

  • Lol lots of jealous non-Victorians bitter about missing out here.

  • As much as I hate dan, daddy always likes free gubmit money. It's the only time I can get a handout so I might as well.

    • +2

There is no such thing as "free government money".

      • +1

At least I can claw back some of my overpaid taxes.

        • You overpaid your tax?

  • Does anybody know how to get the results of a previous energy comparison? I want to check out what it said last time so I can compare it with the recommendations next time around.

  • +2

The $250 Power Saving Bonus for Victorian households is under maintenance and will be back shortly.

    • It works now. Out of maintenance.

  • Thanks for the reminder! All done in 1 min :) and very much needed!

  • Need this $250 so dearly.

  • +2

They should give this for only those who can't afford or below certain income threshold. Giving free money to rich isn't helping anyone.

    • Equality my mans is a better ideal

  • Time to relocate in to VIC :’(

    • Said no one ever

      • +1

Lmao let me guess you're from Sydney?

Well here you can actually still buy properties next to the beach for less than $2m and be 30-40 mins away from the CBD :)

  • +2

Ppl who complain this is inflationary. You are on ozbargain, 90% of posts are incentivising you to spend money. It’s all inflationary. Get off your high horse. /flame suit on

  • -1

Imagine if they didnt privatise the sector…
Then they might not whine about being poor and needing the gst to back up their ailing debt.

Meanwhile in WA where the government is still in charge of the grid we don't need handouts

    • Being in WA, you may have missed the announcements that the Victorian Government is bring back the State Electricity Commission.

      • Wouldn't need it if it never disbanded the network though lets be honest.

        • Of course, that is why the state government is fixing the problem.

  • Thanks filled out the form.

Does anyone know how I can compare Gas bills too by uploading a current bill?

  • Did mine at 7am, ticked 'green deals only', still have cheapest deal above 2 star rating on Greenpeace website. Thanks Dan! Thanks Diamond Energy!

  • Why TF is the energy compare website blocked by my company lol

    • +1

      Classified as "gambling" maybe?

  • Thank goodness for ozbargain reminders! Done and submitted.

  • Done, but interestingly my current provider is by far the cheapest.

  • Great! I can use this to book my hotels in Vietnam where I am flying in July using a $300 return Vietair ticket.

  • So this is how Dan stays in power

  • +1

Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

“We know Victorians are doing it tough with the rising cost of energy – that’s why we’ll have a new round of the $250 Power Saving Bonus, putting money in families’ pockets and making sure they’re on the best deal.”

“We’re driving down bills and putting power back in Victorians’ hands by bringing back the SEC and delivering cheap, clean, sustainable energy.”

really mate?? driving down bill? looks like its only going up.. hence this "power saving bonus" no??? politicians really think of us as fools…

    • +5

Actually, my power bill has gone down in the last 12 months compared to the year before.

      • +4

        Same here

      • +1

        Mine as well.
But, I'll take the $250 government payment as offered.

      • Who are you with dang

  • Does anyone know where to get the meter number? its not on my bill, will i find it on the meter itself? I have the NMI.

    • That is the meter number. Or just use the electronic bill and upload it.

    • Go to your switchboard, usually located outside and you'll find it inside the box.

  • +2

The website's odd. My offer I am on is 22.5c/kWh and 107.8c/day but the offer it recommends is actually more expensive (23.21c/kWh and 115.76c/day). Other than the intro offer of $110 bill credit, it makes no sense.

    • Same here, those stupid intro credits are messing with it. Suspect it's intentional. My current deal is far better. Unless you churn every few months once you get the credit.

    • Is this Simply Energy? I was confused by this too, but I believe 19% discount isn't reflected in the rates.

      • +1

That's right. Doesn't help that Simple Energy's website isn't too clear about the discount either.

EDIT: Their Fact Sheet mentions 19% off for power and 10% for gas. Will do a live chat and discuss

    • It's 19% off those rates plus credit of 110.

  • +1

is it alot of effort transferring your provider? I see everyone always churning their NBN for discounts but rarely hear ppl do it for utilities? Do you lose power potentially for a period of time?

    • +1

You don't lose power. They talk to each other to cut over billing. Literally zero effort from your side.

    • +1

Literally press a few buttons on the new retailer's website and wait a few weeks and it's done.

  • PSA: im sure it depends on your personal scenario, but don't stop looking after the top 3 results when you do a comparison.

my best offer by far was at #5. I don't even understand how it could have ranked it so low. The daily rate + ckwh was lower than the top 3.

    Keep it in mind.

That said, I'm sure the mob i switched to will soon jack up their prices once they've caught all the people changing they want.

    • +1

I was also confused by this, but I figured out that (at least in Simply Energy's case), the rates are pre-discount. Once the discount was factored in, the top offer was in fact the cheapest.

      • +3

A lot of other places also have monthly member fees which is just another way of describing/charging a daily charge which doesn't show up immediately on the comparison sheet without clicking in further.
