iPhone Battery Replacement $109 for All Models Prior to iPhone 14 (Increasing to $145 on March 1) @ Apple

3117

Call it a PSA or whatever - I don't really care where this belongs.

I had the battery on a couple of iphones changed today as the cost is still $109. The battery capacity was still 85% for both phones and Apple were insisting that I wait till the battery capacity hits 80%. I said I wanted them changed and saved myself $72.

The current out-of-warranty battery service fee will apply until the end of February 2023. Effective 1 March 2023, the out-of-warranty battery service fee will be increased by A$36 for all iPhone models prior to iPhone 14.

    • Is it not a deal because the price is going up.

      • +1

It's a deal for me, had my phone booked in next week, changed it to today, saved over $30.

  • Thanks for this. My iPhone XS will get a new lease of life…for the next 12 months

    • Whats your battery health? Mine is at 77% health - going to try and book in now.

      • +1

Mines been at 80% for ages, didn’t realize it could dip below that. I’ve grown used to bringing along a battery pack every time I leave the house

  • +6

    Increase 33%. This is insane.

    • +10

I mean, it's Apple. People keep buying so they keep cost-cutting and money-grabbing until it changes.

      • Really, as you said, it’s Apple, and you obviously don’t have an Apple, so why are you wasting your time banging on about it.

The people here who like “the deal” are Apple owners.

You are deluding yourself if you think your comments are going to make any impact other than people seeing you rant. Chill bro.

        • +1

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, an iPad, an Apple Watch and AirPods. I’m not a fanboy though.

      • +1

“I mean, it's Apple. People keep buying so they keep cost-cutting and money-grabbing until it changes.”

Where are you getting this information?

        • Common sense.

  • +1

You post here enough Dealbot to know (and care) that this isn't a deal, and where to post this.

  • +4

this is more of PSA rather than "Bargain"

  • Wasn't it 89 dollars ? When did it increase?

iPhone 8 plus is 79 just checked

  • +11

Not a deal IMO. Don't need Apple to do this outside of a warranty

    • If you dont pay Apple to do it, ios will keep throwing annoying warning message that it's not "genuine" part. Doesn't stop usage but just super annoyjng

      • Interesting.. Never seen it but I'm primarily Android. My latest iPhone is an 8.

  • Ahhh how frustrating. Just went to apple on the weekend about my MacBook keyboard being crap. Missed out on the “4 year replacement” by a couple months.

Guy at apple said to wait until my battery gets below 80% so when they do a battery replacement, they also replace the keyboard for 299$ rather than the keyboard on its own for $999….

But now looks like from March 1 they’re increasing the MacBook battery replacements by over $100. Should have just pushed for them to do it then /sigh

    • Id push for it. I got a MacBook 15” swap outside extended warranty as I thought marks were my fault on it when it was a known fault.

    • $299 is absurd in its own right!

  • Battery health on my iphone 12 is 80%… Might be worth doing actually.

    • +1

Mines at like 84% for 12 pro max and I charge it 3 times a day >.> I’ve had it for about 2 years since new. I use it soo much and notice the 16% difference significantly so will probably get mine changed

      • +1

On second thoughts I might skip, last time I had them do a battery replacement there were water resistance issues on my iPhone X, nowadays I can always be in reach of a charger so should just put these $100 towards the next device.

    • Xs 77% from December 2018

  • is it done on the spot or come back another day?

    • If they have stock, it’s about an hour I think. Otherwise need another trip. You can get lend a device while yours is being serviced.

Apples lend devices are expensive when you break them. I mean crazy expensive when consider what they are.

      • Thanks, it's actually my son's phone, currently at 70+ %, so a new battery will help greatly.

A bit of dilemma though, not sure if $79 is worth it for such an old phone. But then a newish phone would cost a lot more.

  • All new iPhones got locked battery so replace them by Apple would at least “look” a bit better.

Though I’m waiting for iPhones with USB-C port so will probably replace the phone by then anyway.

Now that AppleCare+ can be extended exceed the 2 year mark now. Since I’m getting AC+ anyway, it should give me free battery replacement anyway.

    • +2

      anyway

  • +1

Until February 28th, use code “To be updated” for 25% off the future price of an iPhone battery replacement!

  • +2

Why pay the Apple Tax when you have option.

If you're phone is over two years old and out of ACCC, then buy a high quality battery (not cheap battery) in ebay for $20 and replace it yourself or pay $30-$40 to be replaced by a phone repair shop.

Not a deal. If you own an Apple product then you signed up to being ripped off.

    • +3

All my apple devices last for ages, and their service is top notch. Power supply for my laptop blew up after 5 years - they swapped it for a new one no cost. MacBook screen had some slight delamination over bezel after 3 years, replaced whole screen no cost. Had an iPhone that got a speck of dust in camera after a year - replaced it with a new phone on the spot no cost. Even an iPhone case that started to peel after 12 months they swapped no charge. Worth the premium imho.

      • Who replaced this items for you at no cost the apple store or online store?

        • In the Apple Store - I’d speak to a staff member politely and ask what they could do and they would then help out.

      • -1

All included in the inflated prices.
Othes give you much better value for money initially.
My 9 year old Galaxy Note 4 is still used by my father with features never available on iPhone (micro SD, Stylus, IRed, oxygen sensor, replacable batt…)

  • +1

We literally have an Apple tree in our household with about 15 iPads/iPhones/Airpods. But I will say this, I will NEVER change any battery ever. 1 single battery change is enough to buy up to 3 good 10,000mAh powerbanks that can do a better job.

    • +8

How's that 'literally' an Apple tree?

      • An apple tree with 15 apples on it so far and still growing?

      • They must live in an Apple treehouse, I guess

  • +7

All the hyperbole by certain commenters on this deal seems to overlook the origins of why battery replacement at Apple Store is “low priced” until end of February.
It goes back to Battery Gate when Apple were found to have used software upgrades to deliberately slow down performance of iPhones & so preserve battery life. They got busted for it. Part of the deal was that they were forced to offer low priced battery replacements (I had one on an iPhone 6).
It seems that the goodwill period is now over (and their commitment) and they’re going back to full Apple price. I reckon it’s because their techies in the back room spend too much time replacing batteries. Now the average punter can get it done by the private pop up shop in the mall, although you won’t get a 12 month Apple warranty for that.

    • +7

The cheap replacement battery program ended at least three years ago, Apple were doing them for $39.

    • probably the most useful comment in this thread.

      • +1

Not really. The battery replacement was $39 back in 2018.

        • +2

I'm referring to countless people complaining that this is not a deal. It helped me save money as I will now get my battery replaced before the price increase. It could have been free in 2015 but I'm not sure how that makes a difference here.

    • Thanks for this. I was thinking about the same. But for later devices such as XS, 11, generally speaking, would a 95% battery have better performance (faster) than a phone with 79% health battery? A guy in this thread said the lower health battery has lower voltage will result the phone working slow. Not too sure about that.

  • thanks, booked an battery appointment for Wed 1/03.. apparently Mon and Tues are all booked out where I live

    • +1

does it lock in the price at the time of booking?

It says "Estimated Cost: A$109*" which makes me think they will just charge march rates :<

    • +3

You’ll get charged with the new rate

      • All new batteries come 80% pre-charged from a huge coal-fired power plant in China. On the plus side, it’s 100% Aussie cleanish-kinda coal!

        • +3

Win-win then. Otherwise, lets go back to stone age.

  • +1

Problem is they no longer fix the camera.

    • -4

Smartphones are disposable items. Get the latest, cool iPhone on release day, and toss your old faithful at the nearest homeless person. They don’t deserve the best

  • +5

It's like an anti-climax Ozbargain deal. Purchase before the price get jacked up. The third dimension of ozbargain.

  • -3

This site is slipping. Users care more about the utility of the site than moderaters. So many reports are brushed off as "well, if there's heaps of votes then the site has spoken", which is ridiculous.

    Enforce your own standards Ozbargain.

    • Negs are fine. Just don't come whining when the deals site is flooded with irrelevant rubbish.

  • Eh this might not be a deal but it’s helpful information to get in now if someone needs a battery and was dragging their feet. So thanks.

Can anyone tell me what is the oldest model Apple will replace batteries on? I have an old iPad that won’t turn on anymore and I’d like to retrieve some stuff on it.

  • +2

So Ozbargain becomes true to label when it comes to apple, but for the past 3 weeks all those PS5 'back in stock' posts are ok?

This website has gone to SSHHHHHT

  • +2

Don't get ripped off by Apple.

    • +2

Depending on the device age, trying to save $50 here is a false economy imo.

Most of these phones cost upwards of $1000 and a new battery will give them a 2 year lease of life with daily use.

Apple will restore the phone's factory waterproof condition and you wont get any nag messages about non genuine parts.

Also installing non genuine parts could invalidate your entitlement to free replacement in the event of a recall for that model.

  • +1

I don't think people realise we've been swapping batteries on phones for like 40+ years.

ERMAGERD….APPLE has GENUINE batteries. Stay away from the other genuine batteries.

    • +1

The difference between apple batteries and Chinese “genuine” eBay ones are night and day. I used to change them all the time in older devices but the Chinese ones are such terrible quality and die very quickly. I avoid them now.. and I’d rather pay apple to do it with a real genuine battery and keep the water proofing intact. But the more recent iPhone batteries last way longer vs iPhone 5 and earlier where after a few years they were no good.

      • +4

Mate the whole device is made by Chinese. You meant cheap knockoffs?

        • Of course, good luck getting actual genuine batteries

      • How long the iPhone batteries last?
My Galaxy Note 10+ after 3.5 years has 91% health (I use AccuBattery pro & keep the charge mostly at 20-80%)

        • How long the iPhone batteries last?

keep the charge mostly at 20-80%

Pretty much forever with that charging scheme. My 12 Pro Max still had 100% health after 2 years because I kept SOC between 20-80%. Family member has it now and it's only down to 99%.

  • +1

Good post - thanks - my iPhone 12 Pro is about 83% - worth the bucks to stretch it another year or so! Booked in!

    • -1

My 2y older Galaxy Note 10+ has 91% health with heavy use & 25w super fast charging.
      Worth the bucks?
Probably not. They are all making big profits :(

  • Yall mafakin iPhone people be wildn

  • Aren't battery warranty for 2 years? Some dude at Apple Store told me I don't need battery replacement as I still have one year of warranty left.

    • Yes but they will only replace it if battery health falls below 80% during the warranty period.

  • Will they help replace a battery for a iPhone XS with a cracked back ? (XS has glass back )

    • +3

Maybe not, because that’s backbreaking work

  • My iPhone 6s Plus has its battery capacity at 70% but I really don’t think it’s economical to spend this much money to replace it. I bring a cheap power bank and cable with me whenever I go outside, never had an issue with low battery.

    • I’m still carrying my baby around with the umbilical attached. I get some weird looks but I don’t see a problem. At least this way I won’t accidentally leave them behind

    • An iPhone 6S is borderline worthless now and you can probably get a half decent one for less than the Apple battery replacement cost on ebay,

I have one and I bought a battery on ebay for about $20 and installed it myself.

  • +2

Sorry what’s the main issue everyone is having? You aren’t getting 100% charge and only getting up to 80-85% ?

    • It's a capacity/"health" so while it'll still say 100% it will drop quicker.

Say a battery has 10 hours screen on time at 100% health. At 80% battery health they're only getting 8 hours screen on time. A new battery reclaims that extra 2 hours.

(Idk actual numbers I just used ones that were easy to calculate lol).

      • im sorry, i know i didn't finish high school but what you said above sounds ok?
i.e. 100% you get 10 hours, then when it gets to 50% then you have 5 hours screen time left and how does a new battery give you an extra 2 hours, why not just charge your phone at 80% to get it back to 100%? sorry i'm not following my bad lol

        • +1

Battery health is like maximum capacity, say the phone has a 2,000mAh battery, when new from factory it has 100% health, which is 2,000mAh.

The battery wears out after many charge cycles, when health drops to 80%, the maximum capacity becomes 1,600mAh.

The charge indicator is a percentage of maximum capacity, even when it says 100% charged, it's 100% of 1,600mAh.

While you can charge the phone to show 100%, you will never get the same screen time when it was new.

          • @browser: Ah gotcha so how do you check the battery health on iPhones? Is there an app to check if it’s say dropped from 2,000mAh to 1,690mAh?

I guess I never took notice of my battery health for my iPhone 11 Pro coz I try to charge it each night and then mostly get 1 day usage out of it depending on what I use the phone for

            • +1

@prankster: From the Settings screen -> Battery -> Battery Health & Charging. The 'maximum capacity' is the number to look at.

  • Thanks OP. I just booked a battery replacement for my wife's iphone8 for $79.

  • Do I need to leave my iPhone if I want a battery replacement? I don't have any spare phone.

    • +1

They do it there on the spot… worst-case you come back in an hour

    • +1

Ive had mine swapped at an Apple store it took them about an hour. If you have booked the service appointment in advance then there's no excuse for them not to have a replacement battery onhand for your job, just don't book an appointment any less than 1 hour from store closing time and you should be right,

  • +1

Feels a too obvious question- what is the alternative option battery-wise?

Are all the cheap eBay/local phone fixes used bad batteries? Is there a non-Apple option that sell a decent battery?

  • For older people. Do we just go to the apple shop and line up? Then the battery will be replaced in 1 hour?

    • Have to make an appointment, either online via website or over Apple Store app or phone. You can walk in, but there is a chance you will be turned down, especially when it’s busy obviously.

  • +1

Does the price increase apply to iPad too? Does anyone know?

  • Are they able to change it with a crack on the back glass of a iPhone XS?

    • Ask to be sure, but willing to bet the answer is: we have to replace the back glass too, which is likely to be way more than it’s worth

      • Thanks

    • +1

Only the screen needs to come off for a battery replacment so it shouldnt matter.

  • +1

What's the downside of have an 70% battery health apart from the phone won't last as long as before?

    • +1

Next step is phone slowing down (due to battery not being able to support peak voltages) and/or phone randomly shutting down.

      • +3

My phone randomly shuts down whenever my boss starts complaining. I put up with it, but I’m thinking about finally replacing my boss

        • +1

If you preordered Galaxy phones with free Care+ you can replace your boss 2x in 2y
(It only costs $99 for that pleasure ;)

      • Could you please provide more info about this? I would think so but I can’t get any info on Google

        • What do you mean? What do you want to know?
