D-Link DIR-457U Wireless G MYPOCKET 3G Router for $79 Pickup [Sydney] or Extra for Shipping - OLC

00

Hey guys! Today's Deal is the DLink DIR-457 3G Mobile Router. It is not locked to any Network (Important when your comparing this to the models available from Vodafone and Optus etc). Other than that it works just like any other pocket WIFI. I know that it is Wireless G instead of Wireless N like some other pocket Wifi out there but just keep on mind that the typical 3G speed that we can get from our Telco is much lower than even the 54Mbps let alone 150Mbps.
This is Australian Stock and searching on Staticice we by far are the cheapest in Australia. Shipping is around 8-15 dollars as shipping cost is calculated based on your post code.

  • I bought one of these two years ago. It's an interesting product. Actually it's two products - a USB modem and a WiFi router. There is a switch to change the mode. It runs two sets of firmware and the options and features are different depending on which position the switch is in.

Getting firmware updates is a pain. The D-Link Australian sit has no updates available. There are updates on the Taiwan site buried a long way down in Chinese. A little perseverance and Google Translate will let you find them. The bad news is that after the initial stability fixes, there doesn't seem to have been any further releases.

On one hand it was a great device with lots of features - it has pretty much all the features of a home router. On the other, it has lots of compatibility problems with Australian networks. I never expected it to work with Telstra (wrong frequencies), but I was surprised that I couldn't get it work with Optus. It did work with 3/Vodaphone, but that network is poor quality.

I bought this as a WiFi hotspot. With the problems I've outlined, I no longer use it, I bought a new phone which had a hotspot feature instead. The phone works well and I no longer need a separate mobile broadband account and I no longer need to carry an extra gadget when I travel.

I would not recommend this router. Why bother? Phones with hotspot features are common these days.
