Please share your views on how many deals posted on OzBargain are real bargains, as opposed to just vote chasers posting deals to get on OzBargains named Hit list.

Thankyou.

I’ll start. I use to trust this site to be a provider of really good bargains, but sadly no more because now everything has to be taken with a huge grain of salt. Too many tiny non bargains being posted incentivised by Ozbargain publishing your name on a list for posting the most !

        • +38

          Not really.
It's not a logical fallacy to notice something being subpar, when you're not contributing to it. It can be classified as making an observation, and communicating that is fine.

But I'm not sure where the OP stands, not here to defend them, I just wanted to point out that it is not a logical contradiction by itself.

        • +13

OP asked how many posted deals are real bargains, didn't seem to be whinging about a lack of deals.

Just because you might not have posted a deal, doesn't mean you aren't allowed an opinion on those that are posted.

        • +6

Do you need to eat shit to know it tastes bad?

        • I distinctly remember you attacking an Ozbargainer for merely the way he wrongly spelled one word— in one of the money saving comments I posted. I see you still have nothing to contribute- shall I leave a spelling mistake for you - Govno ?

        • @ThithLord — good to see you finally have something to contribute other than trying to silence Ozbargainer’s by being so petty as to attack others for one word spelt wrong—— I nominate you for finally having an opinion for once !

        • And complaining about an apparent dummy spit, by spitting the dummy.

      • +14

        Op: What are your views?
        Poster: My views are….
        Everyone else: How dare you?!?

        • To be fair OP and Poster are the same user in this specific case.

      • -1

I have posted REAL savings for families.

    • +39

I lean towards the view that most of the deals posted here are bargains FOR SOMEONE.
Now, most of the time that someone is not me, and many 'bargains' are not real bargains for almost anyone, but I'd say all but a very small number are not bargains FOR ANYONE.

    • Come on mate, you've been here for 3 months…. and haven't contributed a single thing here.
This is a community website where the community controls the quality of the content by the deals they find and post.
If you want a higher quality of deals, how about you lead by example and post some deals? Even if they don't get a huge amount of votes, at least you're trying.

Otherwise you've just leaching aren't you? This isn't a paid service/subscription. If you want a higher quality of 'service', make it happen!

      • @UFO I have contributed in numerous forums to save people money. You?

    • +1

New content coming to streaming services come to mind for me straight away… yes we know new movies come out on Netflix, that's the whole point of signing up to it

    • Worked in your favour though. You are - Debt Free.

  • -2

There are some really great posters of genuine bargains- like Wuman who is on the ball with latest and best free ebooks all the time, yet posters of really poor deals are encouraged to continue posting poor deals just to get on Ozbargains list. Not a bargain site anymore. So I go to forums hoping for better, but same problem again—- vote chasers posting irrelevant comments to get on Ozbargain’s list of most comments made. Wasted potential.

    • +1

to get on Ozbargain’s list of most comments made.

@jv i think someone is attacking you!

      • +10

jv doesn't have the time to post deals. Too busy choosing which word to make bold.

        • +2

I always thought it was a random choice.

    • +50

Personally I think the free ebook deals are garbage, there are so many free ebook deals and none of them are reflective of the quality of the book - the books themselves are just trying to climb the list of amazon rankings so it seems like they're a good guide on Python, Excel, etc for anyone searching in the future.

      • +2

Many of them have been out of copyright for decades too. If that's the kind of book someone thinks is a bargain then Project Gutenberg will blow their mind.

        • @banana365 you are out of touch if you are still stuck on Project Gutenberg when @Wuman posts the latest free’d up.

          • @Debt Free: Not really, it was just an example of how old many of the free ebooks posted are. Despite having had a couple of Kobos I've never managed to make the psychological switch to ebooks, preferring a physical copy. I read so few books these days anyway.

Until checking a minutes ago, I hadn't realised how old Project Gutenberg was. It's just a year younger than me.

      • Totally agree

      • +1

Hey the eBooks I sharead are good ones!

        • Sorry. If I could edit to put in "most", I would. Thanks by the way, those Will Wight books were a fantastic deal!

          • +1

@freefall101: Twas a joke lol. I agree a lot of people rarely read or use those free ebooks deals

    • +7

You realise that beside the monthly winners (which are varied each month so there's no one just winning all the time) there's no benefit for posting and being in those lists?

      • +8

wait, you mean I've been "vote chasing posting irrelevant comments" for nothing?
        now you tell me….

      • +3

        TIL

      • +2

        So many wasted years sigh

      • +1

There's also too many cons for posting a deal so most people probably don't even think about posting
        - getting roasted/attacked for posting a deal
        - getting called "vote chasers" for posting well voted deals
        - being bombarded with product questions even OP is not a rep
        - answering comments from people who can't read
        - personal attacks
        - more risk than benefit for businesses to post

      • +1

This. Perhaps I'm naive but I think that the overwhelming majority of people posting on OzBargain are trying to highlight what they believe to be an actual deal. I find it hard to believe anyone would be posting deals just to get onto a list.

    • -2

I genuinely despise downvotes making comments collapse and be hidden basically. It's no better than Reddit where you end up with hordes negging you into oblivion and it becomes an echo chamber. Not saying I agree with your comment but comments shouldn't be hidden just because people disagree.

      • +3

You can adjust that in your profile.

        • +1

not hidden should be on by default. Not everyone is tech savvy

        • Not everyone has an account, i'd be surprised if even half the visitors to the site log in.

          • +2

@ssfps: I didnt for 7 years lol, ozbargain is my homepage. Never contributed cause I'm just a leech wanting to see good deals, not a hunter to go forage for them.

      • +8

I actively look for collapsed comments because they're the most interesting and divisive.

        • +1

Same but a few months in I realised that there’s a setting which allows you to view all comments uncollapsed.

  • +15

I don't know as opposed to vote chasers, but I see about 4 percent of front page submissions as "real bargains". If something is on the front page with 80 upvotes it wouldn't surprise me if it was just the regular price or if the product were just some crap you can get off Aliexpress. Mods here put effort into making sure people don't discuss taboo topics and such, but the deals themselves are not actively vetted for and staff/volunteers are not out there actively looking for genuine bargains.

But I don't come here for real bargains, I come here to spend money and receive stuff in the mail. Also for the jokes and shitposts.

    • +2

Front page has a free phone case from Amazon.

Then a mobile plan one dollar for three months

      That's ten percent.

    • +2

      Very true.

A lot of the posts these days are just semi-regular "sale price". Stuff that you'll be guaranteed to find on "sale" like once a month or so on Amazon, eBay or large chain stores (outdoor stores like Kathmandu, Anaconda, BCF, Macpac etc are some of the biggest offenders). There's a bit of a subculture here around certain products/brands that people love to post and upvote - how many posts do you see that are along the lines of "Ozbargain's favourite ___ is back on sale"

But to be fair, it's rare to actually find a good bargain these days too. Companies are all collecting massive amounts of data (that's why they all get you to sign up) which gives them insight into spend habits and allows them to not only set prices and sales that are optimal for their profits but purchase the correct amount of stock.

In addition, this site has gotten massively popular and mainstream. You can still find bargains when there's clearances and price errors, but if they get posted here - there's way too much visibility. Clearance stock will vanish quickly and price errors will get too much attention to be able to fly under the radar.

  • -4

I saw your name on the list— top of the votes of most comments. Why do you do it?

    • +3

I almost never most deals, maybe once a year if I see something I think others may appreciate, that makes me among the most noble users of all.

      • -4

like I said you are on the list of most comments made. Why do do do it? Why do you post just for the sake of posting anything- why do you love being on Ozbargains irrelevant most comments made list?

        • +2

What difference to comments make. Deals I can understand, people posting fake deals just to bump their deal count can waste people's money. But reading comments is free. Doesn't cost you anything, no risk of my comments influencing your behaviour in any meaningful way.

          • -6

@AustriaBargain: I disagree. It wastes people’s time to read irrelevant comments. It turns good contributors away from this site when it is like a playground for silly toddlers.

            • +11

@Debt Free: Well, I think silly toddlers are fun to play with, but if you prefer boring and serious contributors, maybe you should start a site for grown-ups only.

              • -4

@AustriaBargain: I thought this was a site for grown ups—- if not it had better be policed properly to keep weirdos away from children.

                • +9

@Debt Free: Oh boy, sounds like someone needs a nap and a juice box! Let's leave the policing to the grown-ups and stick to talking about unicorns and rainbows, okay?

        • -1

Ozbargain isn't just a place to post deals, it's a forum and community too. I rarely post deals but comment occasionally and I enjoy doing that. You don't seem to understand or have any experience with forums.

  • -2

I come here wanting to contribute and also to learn from others.

    • +28

But you haven't posted a deal yet?

      • +4

he doesn't become debt free by spending lots of money

      • A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.

        OP's user name checks out.

      • -1

I have contributed in multiple forums. What have you contributed to?

        • +5

She's posted 52 deals. The point is that you've made 0.

          • +6

            @Clear: Ouch zero deal.

OP better change username to Deal Free.

        • +5

Way more than you have. At least unlike you, I actually post deals and set an example for others rather than whinging in the forums about the lack of deals

  • +4

So I go to forums hoping for better, but same problem again

Well, I don't know about anyone else's track record, but you're 33% of the problem with your current 3 posts.

    • ???????Why don’t you explain

      • +7

You made a post, and put two comments straight up… if anyone is trying to get on OzB's named hit list for useless comments it's you.

Could have just edited the post.

          • +19

@Debt Free: You have made about 100 useless comments in the last day.

  • perhaps I did not explain where this is coming from—- too many people on the forums reply with childish, irrelevant comments just to earn votes and I am sick of it.

    • +25

Usually because we are replying to childish, irrelevant posts

      • -7

Ohhh I see now, here you go again- you bulleting me with comments just so you can stay on your useless Ozbargain list for most comments made. Good luck if that is what makes you happy.

        • +8

You're just salty because you don't have a popular comment badge like us comedic geniuses 💁‍♂️

          • +1

@Cheaplikethebird: Pfft who cares about badges? ;)

            • +3

@spackbace: I posted an Amazon deal with a $1 difference from the previous deal to get the black badge.

    • +2

Oh no! That sounds like a really yucky situation! Maybe we can play with some toys and forget all about those silly forum people!

    • +14

      I am sick of it.

Did i miss the bit where you're held captive against your will here? If you don't like it, go do something else.

      • If you don't like it, go do something else.

        Wait, we can leave?!

      • No. I like to make things better unlike you who likes to chase people away.

    • +2

      1 like = 1 respect

    • Okay boomer

    • +3

Yeah… But some of the comments are great. I've had a good laugh from some of them.

A gut induced laugh free of charge is a bargain imo!

      • I love a good laugh - Please Please Please do share a good shitpost worth laughing about with us all !

    • +1

And its always the same few people. Are they always online?

    • Alt + F4 fixes this.

    • I personally enjoy the random banter that comes from the comments and forums, it stops people from taking things too seriously! There is plenty of good comments in the mix, and threads that get too much random and personal I just ignore.

    • +1

Take a deep breath, big fella.

  • -6

Forums is where the real gems are, especially when there are no real deals. And mature, decent people just haven’t got time to put up with time wasting immature toddlers who pollute forum comments and make them a pain to use.

    • +15

      I like turtles! 🐢

      • +9

My cats breath smells like cat food….

        • +4

Try chicken neck, that usually fixes the smell without having to brush their teeth :)

      • +3

Turtles are pretty rad. I saved one not long ago.

        • mine lives in the garage

          • @Archi: Nice. The one I saved from a cat attack got returned to where I rescued it after being treated by a vet.

            • +3

@mapax: mines been in a glass tank for almost 20 years. had her when she was the size of a 20 cent piece and now she is the size of a dinner plate.

she will be going into a very large pond at a reserve in few weeks time, hopefully ti make some new friends

              i;m going to miss her

    • Why negging this. Forums are great!

I’ve also never posted deal, good intents but not happened yet.

For the record, I think 100% are deals but not that interested. Forums have some classics that I still laugh about - makes this site a fun visit

    • +5

Well, I'm not a toddler, but I did just learn how to tie my shoes, so that's pretty exciting!

    • +13

      Proud of contributing nothing

      But that's what you're doing.

    • +6

Lots of useless comments from you. Plus no deals posted. You will be missed.
