What Percentage of OzBargain Bargains Do You See as Genuine Real Bargains, as Opposed to Vote Chasers?

Please share your views on how many deals posted on OzBargain are real bargains, as opposed to just vote chasers posting deals to get on OzBargains named Hit list.

Thankyou.

Can we have a list of your "positive" contributions since you are volunteering for moral police ;)

    • +3

Reading this thread and, genuinely, the most off-putting comments on this thread is your constant stream of negativity. Maybe try some self reflection Debt Free.

    • Can you leave and never return?

The irony in the posts by the op this thread is overwhelming.
Do you also shout at mirrors and tell them to stop looking at you?

    • +1

Do as OP says not as they do.

      Also, reeeeeeeeee

    • +2

Have a look at the monthly report thread, where op complains about people posting, but makes 100 posts themselves complaining about it.

    • Reckon OP has got to the end of a bottle they purchased from one of the genuine OzB deals, then started posting this,

  • +3

    Guessing about 10%.
That means 90% are vote chasers.
I don't truly believe people are here to share REAL bargains.

  • +1

Im sorry dude. But its all bout getting on that hit list. You dont like it, you delete this account and grow some courage to post it from your real account.

  • OP, why don't you demonstrate for us by posting a real deal on OzBargain?

Oh wait, you haven't posted any.

  • OP iz teh bozz here. U kidz betta listen.

    All hail bozz!

    • +1

I'm wondering if it was booze instead of bozz.

      • OP could use some booze.

  • +7

OP, why must you complain so much about something so menial and worthless?

How do 'useless comments' and 'vote-chasing deals' affect you in any way?

Shaking your fists at the clouds won't get you anywhere.

Grow up OP, and move on with your life.

      Fact: Amygdala hijacks
Control of a person's ability to respond rationally to a threat. This then leads to the person reacting in an intense, emotional way that may be out of proportion to the situation. Without the ability to use their frontal lobes, a person is unable to think clearly.

There is no logical reasoning to irrationally.

Seems like the caveman brain in full control.

OP, you haven't been here long enough to complain…

Kindly go and talk to yourself somewhere else.

I'm assuming my downvoter is Debt Free because if they're not, they've got to be a loser who likes to read a random post nonsense without contributing anything to Ozbargain themselves.

      • Just as likely one of those people that gets triggered by “Member Since” type comments.

Can you provide some examples of vote chaser deals and genuine real bargains?

Also, what percentage have you calculated?

  • +3

Wouldn't "Genuine Real Bargains" naturally attract lots of votes? 🤔

    • Yeah haven’t seen many generating hundreds of +ve lately. Miss those days.

I use to trust this site to be a provider of really good bargains

    What was your previous username?

  • +19

I find OzB invaluable - anything I want to buy I quickly search here and rapidly find the past deal prices to give me an idea of how much I should be offering and when the next deal is likely.

Also read real-life comments from satisfied / dissatisfied customers.

Eg how much should I offer for 65” LG G2 OLED ?

I find it easy to skip the e-book deals and quite enjoy the joke posts on $5000 bottles of whisky.

I almost never post deals, but only because I rarely see anything before it’s already posted, except an occasional hyper-local WA deal.

    • +6

OzBargain is the only review site I trust. So many things I own I've bought off the fact they're an OzB community favourite. Esatto heat pump dryer being a recent one, I didn't even realise heat pump dryers were a thing until you fellow tightarses showed me the light. It's a blessing and a curse though, got me in hot water few times… "Babe that does sound great and I'd love to buy it, let me just consult OzBargain first"

    • Also read real-life comments from satisfied / dissatisfied customers.

Yeah, i often search for an old deal just to scan the comments for honest reviews. Maybe we shouldn't say this less it increases guerilla marketing.

  • +5

I actually come to OZB for the entertainment value. I love this community!

I spent all my downvote quota on one thread which is a first.

    • +1

      First, but certainly not last

    • I’m looking forward to Ozbargins premium where you get extra downvotes.

      • +1

        You don't already have it?

  • +10

Different people have different perspectives. I find those free eBooks posted everyday to be spam. They're mostly low quality rehashes of each other that exploded during the pandemic. Everyone just copied each other to push out free books/courses to advertise their other paid ones. It's garbage.

Something that you don't deem a bargain will be a bargain for others. There's tons of obscure stuff and heads up on things we didn't know we wanted. That's part of being a sharing community.

$500 off a $1000 vacuum cleaner is not a bargain to me. It is to many other people, but not me. Whereas $10 off a PS5 game could be a bargain to me and not to most others. Everyone's different and looking for different things. 90% off pet food is a great bargain but if you don't have a pet…

As for the bee in your bonnet about monthly lists, no one's actively aspiring to that. It's utterly meaningless. That's just a side effect of being active in a community. Nothing wrong with that.

The irony is your constant comments complaining about people commenting…

  • +4

as opposed to just vote chasers

I'm more annoyed at people who criticise the OzBargain community and never ever post even one solitary bargain.

  • One man's trash is another man's treasure.

  • +2

98% is utter junk. Wish you could filter what appears on the home page.

    • But you can

  • +2

I suppose when’s single sale is broken down into 30 individual posts (e.g. Steam or e-shop sales). Totally a case of vote chasing

    • Case the other day where an individual item deal got nearly double the upvotes of the original.

  • +1

OzBargain is pretty good. Sure there’s random comments and opinions, but for me that’s part of the fun. The vote system sorts most things out. You can subscribe to get alerts for the stores you’re interested in.

  • +1

I don't see any problem - anything that is worth seeing is voted up, whether it is a bargain to me personally is irrelevant. I've gotten both great buys (some I would never thought of buying) and great advice from here!

  • I just visit to see Ozsubs.

  • +1

Yup, It has definitely changed a lot over the years. A lot more vote chasing and saracastic negative comments which dont contribute anything. I find only asmall amount as being a genuine bargain as opposed to OZRRP or the standard raise price and drop price as a sale scheme.

  • +1

Come for the bargains, stay for the trash talk.

  • +2

Been here since 2009 and finally created an account in 2013.

I’ve noticed that the genuine comments and discussion have taken a huge nosedive over the past 3-4 years in favour of people trying to get a laugh; this ultimately contributes nothing to the conversation other than shutting down the OP and discussion. As a result I’ve found myself jumping over to Reddit more often than here.

    • Any bargains on Reddit? Doesn't seem to be.

    • +1

Yup, Dealing with that right now, went on a deal to provide some real info on the product and got some sarcastic and snarky comments from another user for no apparent reason.

  • +1

    For me, less than 2%

  • +1

    Vote chaser and/or badge collector.

  • What is OP even smoking lol

  • +3

Yeah, it's definitely a broken system.

    Overpriced stuff gets upvotes
    Genuine bargains get ignored
Down voting is discouraged unless it's a scam

  • +2

Like anything, the real gems are often found amongst a lot of noise and rubbish. Have found some great deals on here many times and it's always worth checking.

This site is also a great way to find out what is the best price you can realistically hope for on planned purchases.

  • +2

You kinda have to sift through the junk mail deals till one day you see a real deal

A lot of these deals with tons of votes I genuinely doubt anyone actually bought one

  • +2

As long as you want more sneakers, graphics cards, mice and keyboards, e-books, OLED TVs, SSDs and Teslas, I'd say 99% of the deals are real deals.

  • 43.735%

  • High end graphics cards are rarely bargains and hardly anyone is buying them

  • If you think some deals aren't deals, just ignore them. It's not hard to see which deals are the real deal.

  • I've wasted a lot of savings due to OzB.
Historical search to see if something for sale has ever been cheaper or if it's worth waiting for a sale and determining before paying 30% extra for nothing.
Very small, a lot comes down to the money I'm willing to part with, what I need to replace, or what I want to buy but don't want to pay full price for.

  • +1

    In general:

Big brands get the thumbs up even if it's a mediocre deal, small businesses rarely get any love or thumbs up even if its a really good deal.

  • +7

I’ve been a member officially for about 13 years, but I was was here even before that unregistered. The pure fact is, OzBargain used to have amazing deals because companies and marketers would use it to inflate their sales numbers or push growth. OzBargain allowed companies to have things on sale to the general public and then have coupons and discounts only for OzBargainers, maximising profit. However, a big change occurred: Cashback sites such as Cashrewards, then ShopBack, TopCashback etc offered similar marketing rewards with more control. They could limit to 5000 redemptions, make terms and conditions people may ignore thus voiding discounts, and control the narrative. OzBargain is social and will go hard on bad bargains and bad merchants.

Several other things occurred leading to less deals:

    • 10% GST applying to almost all imported goods
    • Australian dollar is in the toilet
    • Heaps of websites don’t ship to Australia and forbid reshippers. It may be possible for some, but near impossible to post as a bargain
    • Catchoftheday became Catch. ZAZZ died also. Catch bought out.
    • Amazon Australia arrived. Great for consumers, bad for ozbargain. Simply put they almost never have substantial stock, I barely get 5% of the deals
    • Logitechshop closed down. A substantial amount of deals there.
    • Coles and Woolworths posts were all the rage for a while. But their respective apps and loyalty programs make this COMPLETELY moot. I boot up Woolworths app and it recommends my previously bought items that are on special. Also, Woolworths wins due to 10% off monthly shop you can easily do twice a month, as well as use discounted gift cards.
    • Is disagree on the coles woollies one. I often see specials that I wouldn’t have otherwise found on OzB. And there’s been the recent stacking of coles weekly specials with member prices, that you can find yourself, but is good when someone points out the better ones.

    • Logitechshop closed down. A substantial amount of deals there.

Fast Eddie from FluidTek closed this one down too?

    • The sheer number of posts these days don't help, if you're looking at things on a numbers perspective. I'd say we still have the same % of good deals in general, but with far more deals posted you see far more shit

I hardly ever go into the new deals section these days, whereas that's where I used to stay and didn't touch the front-page. Too much to scroll through now

  • +1

I'd say 1% or maybe less. Many days I see nothing of any value or wonder what the hell people are thinking. Like looking at weekend deals there's nothing worthwhile at all.

But definitely some solid bargains - at least once a week or so that are worth keeping an eye out for.

The discussions can be pretty interesting too - I think half the appeal is just reading up about different things or various car accidents.

  • At least there is less/no Udemy spam, now.
I'm not sure if that's still a thing and I have it filtered or if it finally stopped.

  • -1

I always upvote those super pricey phones and $3000 computer deals for the lolz

  • There've been some great bargains over the years, but when I see something like this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/760595 I really wonder if that's the case. It may be an amazing bike, but I can't imagine spending more than my first three cars combined on a bike!!!!

  • Op complains about irrelevant posts, in an irrelevant post.

  • There are lots of bargains but dont trust the up votes too much.
    Not always accurate

  • +1

I'm here for the bargains and to use my allocated 5 downvotes per day.

  • +2

We used to see real bargain here but it is hard these days.. !

The golden days when we were able to purchase gift card from UK eBay on heavy discount not going to come back…!

We can't even see a deal to buy charging cable for a dollar these days… !

  • +1

I remember I used to buy a lot of useless shit from OzB back in the day ~2017. Bought fidget spinners that were like 50 cents or something, completely forgot about it since it took like 2 months to arrive. It was a batman symbol fidget spinner. Took advantage of a lot of free stuff and it was great. I remember when this pizza company was going out of business and I bought 30 pizzas. No freezer so it was pizza everyday for a while. Deals now I look out for are the PC deals but am waiting for 4080 to go down below 1500

  • +1

Unpopular opinion, but any LEGO deals is junk, especially those bespoke models that limit your imagination to the design that they designate (particular co-branding for example).

LEGO has become an evil empire.

  • +1

I think a better question is "Why are members of genuinely excellent bargains no longer posting their deals?".

Main reason is its not worth their time to post them anymore.

When I first created my OzB account I posted deals of 50% off or more. These were typically Clearance deals or special purchase. None of the deals made it to the front page and mostly below 20 votes.

To me when I see that my deals have low votes or low feedback it reads to me as if nobody appreciated the effort or nobody benefited from my post.

Normally that would be OK if it was 2 minutes of my life. But its a huge time investment to compose 1 deal. For me its 20-30 minutes.

    • Taking multiple photos.
    • Making sure there isn't cheaper prices elsewhere by searching comparison stores (+eBay).
    • Comparing with past deals on OzB.
    • meeting strict OzB criteria such as minumum stock, or must be a preferred major eBay seller.
    • search duplicate deals on OzB. Time consuming as it requires reading whole deals to completion.
    • typing up the text.

Then after you submit your deal it gets heavily moderated. For example 5 of your deals get combined into 1. Means you've wasted 80% of your time. Plus its difficult to communicate and summarise multiple deals inside 1 title and too boring for readers to read.

Then if you are seconds too slow to submit before another member posting the same deal then 100% of your time, care and effort is wasted.

The major reason you don't see 90% off deals anymore is that OzB now has way too many greedy Brodens that monitor OzB to resell (is getting worse over time). The Brodens distort the positive up votes that a 90% off deal would have recieved. The original deal was seen by 1 Broden. Every other reader complains on OzB that there was no stock that the deal wasted their time and clicks the down vote which lowers the vote count.

Or the deal has to change its status to Expired or Out Of Stock prematurely. Which means even less total votes, less discussion. Which feedbacks to the original creator that nobody liked or benefited from the post.

Instead of being a fun experience to share a cool deal with fellow bargain hunters I've become hesitant. 30 minutes to spend on my mobile posting a dud deal is 30 minutes I could be spending in the next store having fun searching a 50% off Clearance item.

  • -1

anything by big tyrone is NOT a deal and a vote chaser

  • Most genuine deals on here get swept up by scalpers within minutes or less. We manage data for a few tech retailers at work. Every so often I will see popular deals posted on here for one of our clients that sell out quickly. Whenever I check the order logs I see a spike in orders with several users placing 10-20+ orders with timestamps after the deal is posted on here, or through multiple accounts with the same destination if the retailer has buying limits. Every time ads for said product appear on fb market place or gumtree later during the week at prices that are a fraction of the original sale.

  • -2

I have put in effort to post a deal that got unpublished for being a duplicate of a completely and utterly unrelated item.

I have put in effort to post a deal that had previously been published not in the title of a post but in a very small piece of text within another post I never knew existed because it showed no indication of overlap. My post got unpublished.

I have put in effort to post a deal that got beaten by seconds by someone who had a really poor description.

I have seen people buy a good deal, post about it, people buy it, he gets refunded as out-of-stock, and they have theirs successfully shipped.

I have seen toxic behaviour in this community.

The demoralising aspect is what turns me off. Granted, most of my shopping starts from OzBargain. I don't often shop for items on actual websites outside of OzBargain anymore or it is for a very specific item that I want to ensure I obtain.

    • I don't understand this 'effort' commeny regarding bargain posting.

For most, it takes what? couple of minutes at best to fill in some details, a url, a brief description and hit apply.
(Some, like those posting long instruction details like VPN based overseas $ savings etc definitely take significantly more effort, but that's not most deals)

      • +2

It's effort that goes up in smoke. I still put effort into my comments from time to time.

      • I think he just finds it demoralising to put all this effort into posting, only to find it unpublished

    • I have put in effort to post a deal that got unpublished for being a duplicate of a completely and utterly unrelated item.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/29422/nodes

Only 1 of your posts is marked as a duplicate, and when you click into that post, it appears that it wasn't unrelated

I have put in effort to post a deal that had previously been published not in the title of a post but in a very small piece of text within another post I never knew existed because it showed no indication of overlap. My post got unpublished.

Not according to your post history. Again, only 1 marked as dupe

      Unless you have multiple accounts

maybe 1 in 200. also ozbargin has become too popular, real bargin got snapped up in minutes.

  • Probably like 40%

  • In Lego its a guaranteed vote grab for the first person to put up a popular new set at the guaranteed special of 20% off . Its far from a bargain . It will always go cheaper as well .

  • 94.5%

  • +1

I literally only check this site out of habit now, can't remember the last time I actually found anything good on it.

Needs a "Choice Picks" section curated by mods.

  • Geniune is probably about 5-10%, the deals i posted tend to be average deals, but it's really hard to find good deals at this climate.
