Or, if you have an android of Apple phone, open your camera and point at a QR code.

    • +8

It's not just a QR code reader it's also Barcode reader. It also has other functions. Please read the description.

    • +10

not all Android phones have cameras that recognise QR codes.

    • +3

Android 10 user here. Not all phones have the built-in QR scanner in the default camera app :( I was previously using the free version of this.

Thanks for sharing the pro version. Will give the barcode scanner function a try too!

      • +6

Should just use Google Lens and avoid any shenanigans

    • My Android Realme phone does not have a QR reader with the camera or a QR code reader built in for that matter

    • +3

My oppo doesn’t read QR code’s from the photo app

      • My A91 OPPO camera didn't read the code either
That is why I used a QR Barcode Scanner to read the code & it worked grouse

    • +1

My old apple se needed a QR code scanner app for the iOS camera app to recognise WR codes. This is the same for older android OS version too.

    • +1

Those saying your android phones don't have QR scanners…. Android 6.0 and higher have Google lens tucked away under "modes" in the camera app. THATs where the QR code reader is. Default camera mode just doesn't have it anymore. Atleast stock android doesn't, Google pixel user here since 2XL.

      • Custom Android ROMs don't have QR code scanners in the cameras
and usually don't have Google Apps either.

  • +5

Google lens could be a better option

    • I don't have a google phone. Does Google lens can scan barcodes of products and direct you online for prices?

      • +3

        I don't have a google phone.

Not exclusive to Pixels, my POCO has it as an option in the Camera app.

Does Google lens can scan barcodes of products and direct you online for prices?

        No, I don't think so

        • +1

Just checked my camera. I have an Oppo it has google lens but can only scan QR code nothing else. Thanks 🙂

          • +1

@Scrooge McDeal: Weird, my standalone Google Lens app scans normal barcodes (e.g. UPC, Code 128, etc.) just fine! I take the photo, it places a contextual dot on the barcode (if there is other information detected) and tapping this reveals the barcode data.

Is this one of those basic apps that contain a tonne of malware in them? The built-in Camera app should be more than sufficient (as the Camera API exposed by both iOS and Android support this stuff out of the box.. so if your Camera app doesn't, download the official Android one).

    • +2

How is the app basic? 4.7 ⭐ over 1 million downloads. I have an inbuilt qr code reader on my camera phone. But this app has other features. The one that I like it's Scan product barcodes with QR & Barcode Scanner in shops and compare prices with online prices to save money.

  • Does this offer anything better than the inbuilt QR scanner that's on the quick access menu currently…?

    • +2

I downloaded before I have posted the deal. It has much more than the inbuilt qr coder from camera. I don't know what other features other cameras have. But mine has only Qr code reader. This app can do more than that. I am not trying to sell you the app because it's not mine and it's also free 😃

  • Scan product barcodes with QR & Barcode Scanner in shops and compare prices with online prices to save money.

So they send you to Amazon etc with referral links and make money from you.

The app should always be free.

    • +1

No, you scan the product barcode and it directs you to google with all the results of the product.
And from there you can compare prices. Pretty simple.

  • +2

I'm plussing in protest to the hate and lack of comprehension as to how this is different to simple qr scanner or goog lens.

I don't need it, as I use binaryeye.

  • +5

    I love malware

Does anyone know how to find a list of your installed apps on Playstore? In the past you can see them all through your google dashboard but seems like they've now been hidden
    https://myaccount.google.com/dashboard

  • You've been very patient with these noobs, well done OP.

  • +3

Thanks OP I've always want to become a professional QR code scanner. With this app I can finally go pro. Cheers

      Time to make your OnlyScans

      • If he starts with feet he be raking the big bucks.

  • +1

This app is great, I have a phone with Google Lens (Oneplus 7T Pro) but sometimes that doesn't always barcodes or QR codes.
I've been using the free version of this (the version with ads) whenever Google Lens failed (low light conditions) or when I just want to scan something really fast (this app automatically snaps onto the barcode/QR code once it sees one so you don't need to awkwardly click the shutter or focus on the barcode).

  • There is no benefits to install this kind of app, instead it's better get rid of it to keep system clean. My samsung has dedicated QR code scanner app, Samsung camera app can do as well. Besides that, many app has build in function for qr code scanning. And barcode scanner? Barcode only used for dedicated database system, to input the code instead of manual typing, it can't use on internet searh because not unique and meaningless. Why a user need that on their personal device? Don't think OP really know what is that for.

  • I have the free version as a backup reader. From memory, I only used once.

It is good for webhook qr where it can direct without the need of pressing

    • -2

      backup reader

It uses the same hardware as your primary reader though…

Don't recommend using any apps by this developer. Their free version of this app has scam ads that trick users into clicking and takes them to a site where their credit card details were stolen, has happened to people I know and you can see examples of the negative review on the other listings. While this version doesn't have ads, the fact that the developer never acknowledged the issue is a big red flag https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamma.scan

    • Not to mention, just open the default camera app

    • Thanks for the heads up

    • +1

Possibly they made the pro version free for this reason (and this is a win for us?)

I am guessing they maybe have no control over the ads otherwise Google should have removed this app from Playstore sooner or later as a scammer.

Even Google itself doesn't do well on this I think. recently I had a KFC survey fed into my Pixel phone Discover. I filled in my detail (sub acc) without a thought. Then I started to suspect when it mentioned something draw and win. I checked the original link and found no "KFC" at all. Yes I would say it was a scam and at the same time a sponsored ad. I couldn't even report it directly. Now still I can see this KFC survey pop up randomly in my feeds. No choice but to block it on the My Ad Centre. A note at the bottom says ads are paid and ranked based on quality … not reviewed by Google.

I would never use a third-party app, even the pro version, to scan a QR (similar to clicking a link) that relates to credentials.

This is false claim on Dev, it's the ad provider's problem nothing to do with this App Dev. In theory all ad provider has less or more of this problem. You are making false claim because have no idea how this eco system run.

      • The dev chose the ad provider, so yes it 100% has everything to do with the dev. You are the one making a false claim.

  • +3

Support the above comment. The behavior of this Dev is a bit suspicious. "the developer never acknowledged the issue is a big red flag" - Can't agree more. Hence the neg vote.

  • Nobody uses scandit?

  • +2

Folks be careful of scanning QR codes at random, even on restaurant tables ! It is VERY easy for someone to stick a custom QR code sticker on top of another, so that when you scan the code you see a legit looking website but actually a scam site.
VERIFY before using. Also , virtual 1 time cards when paying with QR codes, I use revolut or wise. UP has these as well I believe.

    • +1

Google Len always shows the link required to press before directing. It's good as the first step of verification. My iOS camera app doesn't.

  • +3

Two of the permitions listed are:

    • Advertising ID Permission
    • have full network access

My understanding is that apps don't need internet access if the app passes links onto another app. I may be wrong here and I'm sure it's more complicated than this.

The advertising permission is a red flag.

    • You are correct, Android has "Intents" which can pass a web address to the web browser app, without needing internet permission.

I have a older QR app installed which does exactly this, and has only camera permission. It reads the QR code, shows the details, then has a button to open the web browser or email or whatever app is needed.

  • I've been using this app for a few years now and it works great.

Does more than standard 'Google Lens'
