I just whinge to telstra and they sent me some

    • Really? After 1 hour of whinging on chat with them, I got nothing. I guess I didn't do it right

I got telstra platinum support so they're all legends in the Townsville call centre

  • Solid kit. Only problem is that you can't set it's IP.

    • Yes you can, under DHCP & NAT choose Manual
      IP.

  • Highly rated. Have mine on Tangerine 250/25mbps plan. The thing is comfortably sitting at 267Mbps / 23mbps via HFC.

The only challenge I had was it needed a firmware upgrade to connect directly to NBN via PPoE which you need to do before on an existing network before you order a new service.

  • I currently have an ORBI, and I don't need my old router at all. It plugs directly into one of those black NBN boxes that connect to fibre coaxial. Does the same apply to an EERO, or do I have to still daisy chain in a router which gets me onto my ISP? (Sorry im not techy enough to explain this better)

    • +1

      Depends on your ISP.

Some (like Telstra) just work by dumb DHCP from the NBN modem, so you can plug in anything and it'll work.

Other ISPs need actual usernames and passwords and sometimes VLAN support, which means you can only connect a router that supports whatever authentication methods they're using.

      • Thanks - yeah I have a username and password to get onto Exetel that I set up my Orbi with. I'll stick with Orbi for now then.

        • The Eero will still probably work with your Exetel service, you'll just need to do a bit of research to find out.
A few years ago TPG and their resellers all used to send the authentication on a seperate VLAN, and that was something that plenty (most ?) routers couldn't do… I'm guessing that situation has improved with time.

Whirlpool forum is the best place to find out about this stuff.

  • Eero can be plugged directly into the NBN NTU,
however the eero may need an firmware update prior (I bought one in December - was fine, but another I bought in January was not and needed the firmware update
