    Are they referral links?

    • +1
      • +2

They were when OP first posted but they were changed after a couple of reports. Are they a cloaked link now or what?

Why does every link now end with ?smid=A3P6X2GIMA114Z

        • +3

Apologies, they were initially but have since been updated. Still posted with the intention that this was a good deal.

          • +2

            @pd145: Appreciate the post regardless

        • Why does every link now end with ?smid=A3P6X2GIMA114Z

?smid= is the Amazon store id, so in this case the links will default to Amazon Germany (DE) via AU

  • Finally a good price on the 150mm Pliers Wrench. Insulated Terminal Crimper looks like a steal too. Thanks!

  • Are cable cutters really worth that much? Most of the time the most difficult part is stripping the insulation for these thick cables, wonder if this tool would make that a little easier

    • +2

They are really designed for quite thick cables, up to 60mm diameter. If you were working a lot with thick cables I can see it being worth it.

For thinner cables you can get away with side cutters or if you don't want to crush the cable too much then cable shears like this:

Wow, great deal on these, thanks!

    • If you're talking about the ratcheting cutter, if you are an electrician doing a lot of work with big mains cables >70mm (especially distribution board work), it would be very useful. I don't come across very large cables every day, I usually just use a battery grinder or hacksaw when I need to.

    KNIPEX Pliers Wrench, Multi-Wrench, Chrome Vanadium, Rust Protection, Chrome-Plated, 250 mm, $72.52 86 05 250

    • I guess this is THE one that non-tradie people should consider to have for all sorts of in-house work/diy, is it?

      • +1

It is a much better version of an adjustable wrench (shifter). Much faster to adjust and generally only need one. Bonus is it can be used on nuts up to 52mm.

      • I have both and I think the 180s are more suitable for most people, especially DIYers. You won’t find much around the house that the 180s couldn’t do and be less cumbersome in doing so.

        • 180? do you mean this ?https://www.amazon.com.au/Knipex-86-03-150-SB/dp/B07WSTPSTC?smid=A3P6X2GIMA114Z&th=1

          • +1

            @aec: I can’t click your link, but that looks like the 150mm, I’m referring to the 180mm version, I.e, 86 05 180

Edit: checked your link, yeah that’s the correct size but I prefer them in the comfort grips which is the part number I cited above or these:
            https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07YGWQXP7?psc=1&smid=A3P6X2GIM…

            • @Wildesy: Get the 180mm. The 150mm is for tight spaces, cars etc but it's lacking leverage. I prefer these flat face pliers rather than those teeth crunchers.

            • @Wildesy: Thanks Wildesy. I will keep an eye on this in 180mm

The 86 06 250 is $5 cheaper than the 86 05 250, and has a higher number. From staring at both, the only difference seems to be in the shape and colour of the grips. Is there anything else to recommend either?

      • 86 06 is VDE electrically insulated, handle looks a bit thicker, so could be a trade off of insulation+more comfortable handle vs not being able to get in as tight spaces, especially with that flare on the VDE handles

      • Good find. Although looks like shipping takes longer from UK Amazon. Also as OZKap mentioned, extra insulation might get in the way. Only $5 difference for a ~$70 tool. Rather the functionality I want. I bought the 86 05 250

Thought these Electricians' Pliers (160 mm) were compelling also 13 01 160

    • No more discounts on Pliers Wrench. Prices gone back up.

Thanks for the heads up OP, just had all my tools stolen from my ute, so time to spend some cash again!

That sucks mate, hope you find the prick/s that took all your gear. Keep an eye out on Gumtree and FB marketplace.

Thank you, definitely ruined the week! Definitely keeping the eyes peeled….

      Damn man, good attitude though.

  • Are the "water pump" pliers a good general purpose adjustable spanner or is it much better to get a wrench plier?

    • +1

The cobra pliers have very sharp and hard teeth to grip pipes. They will definitely work on nuts, but will almost certainly leave tooth marks. They do sell plastic soft grip jaws, but last I checked they were $20+.

If you're going to be using it on nuts and bolts would recommend the pliers wrench. Cobra are good for rusted/rounded nuts.

      • Thanks.

I also have a good socket set and a few serviceable adjustable monkey wrenches, so might get the cobra for large or awkwardly shaped jobs

Knipex Snipe Nose Side Cutting Pliers (Stork Beak Pliers) black atramentized, plastic coated 200 mm 26 21 200

      Now up to $37.21

  • I need a tool chest like the super cheap one but with these

This set comes with side cutters, pliers, needle nose pliers and a pair of cobras for $127.58.

Larger side cutters than the assembly set has and cheaper than buying the assembly set plus the cobras seperate.

  • There is a set being sold by Aldi at $20, wonder how it compares

    • +6

      There is no comparison

    • Aldi tools for us home users are fine, people are such tool snobs lol

      • Aldi tools are hit & miss. Some are absolute garbage, some are solid and good quality. Luckily we have 60 days to find out.

Having said that, you won't find anything in Aldi even close to the same level as Knipex.

  • I picked up the ferrule crimper, https://www.amazon.com.au/97-78-180-Multi-Component-Vde-Test…
Anybody have a recommendation for the ferrules? Never used them before and unsure about insulated vs non insulated etc.
Can get genuine Knipex ferrules from RS components vs random selection from Amazon. Considering they're just a section of soft Al or Cu is there any point in spending more?
Planned use for various domestic and auto projects. I already have a Klein ratchet crimper for insulated terminals but like the idea of consolidating bare wires before termination.

    • Nice one. I'd just get generic ferrules, I like insulated. They're a bit overkill for domestic, but perfect for when you are using finely stranded conductors in flexible cables(for example all appliance leads..).

    • I've used genuine Weidmuller, RS/Element14 generic. All are about the same tin plated copper and work just fine. In the past I liked these ones because they used to be very cheap, still pretty good value now:
      https://rhinotools.com.au/product-category/terminals/bootlac…

  • If anyone is on the sidelines, Knipex are increasing their prices on 01/04/23. I've had a few places send me emails about this.

  • Knipex 77 42 130 have gone back up to $73

  • 71 32 200 Compact Bolt Cutter black atramentized is at an all time low of $53: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/d/B01H73ZNRW?ref=ppx_pt2_mob…
