Does anyone know a way of how to combine these with the $400 AMEX explorer travel credit?

    • +4

You could divide your stay over multiple bookings.

For example, 2 nights via Amex Travel using your credit. Another booking/spend/room service/SPA treatment via the hotel directly.

Basically, to get the statement credit, the spending must be done via the hotel itself. The $400 explorer credit is used via Amex Travel.

    • You can't. Bookings with amex travel is registered as "AMEX TRAVEL ONLINE MERC SYDNEY" on your statement and not the actual hotel. So you'd never get statement credits when booking book via amex travel.

      • That’s what I was tracking, thank you for confirming 🙏

  • only IHG allows to spend online. Hilton / Wyndham / Hyatt are in-person only.

    • You can get around this by emailing/calling the hotel directly and asking them to put your card through. Mind you, this was pre-covid so I don't know if it is still possible but it doesnt hurt to ask.
I am looking at using the Hyatt credit in Niseko for Dec/Jan trip, but that is so far down the road that I might wait till around june/ july before making the decision.

      • I tried with Pan Pacific last year and they didn't do it. Wanted me to come in and pay.

        • should work at most IHG hotels if not all. Just ring them and they will send you a credit card authorisation form to fill out.

    • So pre-paid hotel bookings won't work, but flexible booking where you pay at checkout do? Or does it differ per brand/property? Do hilton pre-paid bookings process as the specific hotel and trigger the bonus, or do they process as just hilton.com?

      • i would like to know that as well…

I just stayed two nights at Hilton Melbourne, booked online, spent nothing in house, paid on checkout and got the $60 rebate in a few days.

  • Only no IHG, do not know the reason..

  • I never understand how to use it- clicked it and login to my account nothing shows up

      • save offer to card
      • spend X at hotel
      • get Y back in the form of a statement credit
      • can't see any offer at at all lol

        • Then it's not for you. It'd be under Amex Offers if it was

I rate the Kimpton Margot in Sydney if anyone needs an IHG recommendation. Can even bring your pet as long as it fits in the lift

    • good to know as I didn't realise Kimpton Margot accepted pets. Did you have to pay additional charge for the pet?
Stayed at Ovolo before (where the website say its $80 per night for the pet) but they didn't charge me any extra. YMMV.

      • I don't have pets.

Don't forget "the snuggle is real" to get a gift from reception.

  • FWIW,

Hertz / Avis in Australia are just not price competitive enough for me to choose them (even when I used my designated corporate / amex codes). For those that don't know, there is a Amex platinum code you can punch in. They are better overseas (U.S in particular).

I actually recommend SixT for Australia airport hires. Go via NRMA Blue membership and you should be able to slash 25% off the rack rate. Its far better than Hertz / Avis even with these cashback, etc.

Anyone know if purchasing IHG points will trigger the credit?

    • +2

I tried. Will let you know if it works

      • Did you end up getting the cashback?

        • +1

So far no. Looks like it didn’t work. Been over 2 months so I guess that’s that.

  • Any hotels allow prepay? Hyatt? Confusing cos it sounds like they only take a deposit, but deposit seems to be full payment . Anyone made a booking a paid online before stay at any of these hotels ?
