      • To add to that, the 50mm is smaller than the 35mm. The plus side of the 50mm was that it has a manual aperture ring, so if lock it to F22, start video, then unlock it and rotate to 1.8 you essentially have a video camera running at F1.8!!

    • Generally, an all-round lens is normally a zoom lens, rather than a prime.

35mm 1/1.8 G DX - it is roughly 50mm full frame equivalent - basically what you see through the lens is what you normally see without a lens. Since it is a DX lens, it is not suitable for full frame camera (if you decided to upgrade later - I know you can use a DX lens on an FX body, but it is still cropped).

50mm 1.8 D - roughly 75mm full frame equivalent - kind of okay for portrait. It is a full frame lens. Light and cost effective. Down side is you need a mid range Nikon DSLR (D90, D7000, D300 etc…).

When you use a prime, you need to use your feet more often (since there is no zoom). No IS/VR - which means either hold your camera steady or increase the aperture so you can lower the shutter speed to compensate for camera shake.

I take it you didn't shift many caps yesterday then? ;)

    • A few, but not thousands sadly….

  • Free cap.. lol i bought this lens and it COMES with a free cap!

What's next free lens with purchase of a cap?

    • I think the cap is the baseball cap with the Cameradirect logo, not as in the cap for the lens

    • +1

Now you just look like a fool..

      • Quite right Snail, we do mean a baseball cap.

  • what to know if you have any Nikon landscape lens on sale?

    Cheers

  • +1

    Needed a nifty-fifty, perfect timing!

  • Great price for the 50mm canon. Nearly bought from kogan for $99 with free shipping but this was cheaper and I can claim some gst back too!
Been tossing up between the 1.8 and 1.4 for a little while but finally ordered the 1.8 last night from the link in the other deal and has already been marked as shipped! (though i probably wont be getting the bonuses from this deal :( shame, lens cloths always come in handy!) Fingers crossed its been well packed and gets here safely.

    • You better confirm with CameraDirect if you can claim back your GST as this is grey import.

      • No it isn't a grey import.

        From their website"
"All of our products carry …. Australian warranty. All of our products have GST included and are stocked in Australia."

        • All grey importers says it comes with "Australian warranty" as in you send the goods back to CameraDirect rather than overseas.

In 2002 CamerasDirect bridged this gap by being one of the first Australian importers to stock camera gear in Australia and support their customers with a local warranty.

Clearly it is parallel import meaning grey stock.

      • hmmm.. I thought that if they charge you for gst on the invoice then you are able claim that amount back… Not sure they are allowed to charge gst on grey imports but im fairly new to the whole claiming gst thing. Not overly fussed though, was still cheaper than any other site/store.

        • +2

Hey guys, regardless if it is a grey import, parallel import, local stock etc, it all depends if the person you are buying it off is GST registered and paying GST on that sale. Every sale we make includes GST, and all prices on the website include GST. So, if you are also GST registered and buy something for $110, you can claim back the $10 GST. Remember though this advice is general and you should contact a taxation specialist for any taxation queries.

We import most, but not all, of our stock from overseas. We warrant it within Australia, it will never leave Australia to be fixed, and all work is done by authorised repairers.

        • So just to clarify, most but not all stock are grey imports and CamerasDirect provides its own local warranty. For example, Canon Australia will not provide any warranty for this 50mm f1.8 lens, but CamerasDirect will.

In addition CamerasDirect charges GST so anyone traveling or registered for GST can potentially get the GST refunded under the tourist refund scheme or as an input tax credit from the ATO.

Far be it for me to question the logic of business operations, but why would you not follow in the footsteps of other major retailers and sell directly from an overseas affiliate? You can skip charging GST whilst still providing local warranty services.

        • +1

Hi Atlas, correct we provide the warranty, and in this case it would be repaired at a Canon authorised repair centre.

Yes we pay GST on all sales, so you can get it refunded via the TRS if you meet their criteria.

We're looking into that, but that's only worth it for goods under $1,000. Since a lot of our products are worth over $1,000, you'd still get stung on the GST on the way into the country. Cheers!

  • Cheers, I was looking for a 50mm canon lense, dunno if its a fantastic deal but it seems cheap…

    Deal on 35mm 1.8D?

  • -1

    whats the expiry on this?

  • -3

Canon 550D doesn't have an auto-focus motor, so that'll create problems using the canon 50mm?

    • +11

No. It will be fine. All Canon EF lenses work on all EOS bodies. All of them.

Stupid concerns like "does it have an autofocus motor?" "does my body have an autofocus motor?" are the sole province of Nikon users :)

    • -3

To elaborate, Canon auto-focus motors are in the lenses themselves, negating the need for the bodies to have them. Just look for the magic letters "IS" in the lens description.

      • +1

So you think you know what "IS" is? It's got nothing to do with focusing… :-)

      • +3

        mmmm.. don't understand the magic letters IS bit. What's so magical about IS? My 50 1.2 does not have IS, nor does the 24 1.4, 35 1.4, 85 1.2, 135 f2, 16-35 f2.8 etc.

Look for the "L" and the red ring instead if you want "magical".

      • Apologies, I thought feguscan was talking about image stabilisation

      • Wrong. IS = Image Stabilisation. Nothing to do with auto-focus. The magic letters are EF (Electronic Focus) as I said in my post.

Or EF-S for cropped sensor cameras only (like the 550D).

        • The S in EF-S stands for "Small Image Circle". Just a fun fact :)

    • Nifty 50 (50mm f/1.8):
For Canon, the nifty 50 works on pretty much all Canon DSLRs.
For Nikon, lower end to lower mid-range models (D3x00 and D5x00) will not get auto focus for the nifty 50.
However, comparing the two actual lenses, the Nikon nifty 50 is better (better bokeh, manual aperture control on lens available, slightly more solid build).

      Other lenses:
If you intend to upgrade to full frame, in general, you should get full frame lenses (and avoid cropped sensor lenses altogether). You can "kinda" get away with it on Nikon (since Nikon FX will mount Nikon DX lens - but there is a big penalty - images will be cropped; anyway, best avoid). For Canon, the EF-S will NOT mount on a full frame body, you will break your Canon camera if you mount it).

  • +1

i already have the 50/1.8 nikon. pity.

  • I am going to have to get one-My brother checked it out and gave me the thumbs up :-) and he knows his cameras.

  • I have a Nikon D3100 with the standard 18-55 lens. Can anyone suggest a good other lens to purchase? Mainly use the camera for portrait and party photos, but also some scenery / travel photography. As a photography noob, can anyone suggest one to purchase? Thanks

    • Have you considered experimenting with some ultra-wide lenses? Have a look at Ken Rockwell's description: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/how-to-use-ultra-wide-lenses…

    • +4

Sounds like the 18-55 does the job? Wide-ish (18mm) to portrait (55mm). If you want something that works better in low light and better bokeh for portrait. 17-50 f2.8 Tamron or 17-55 f2.8 Nikkor. If you want real wide for landscape, tokina 11-16 f2.8 or 10-24 nikkor. 10-24 will work as a party lens with good light but not portrait unless you are talking full body shots. Anything closer will be unflattering. 11-16 will work beautifully indoors but the photos will get boring after a while due to the limited range.

      • I agree with everything you said except about the images getting boring… Sooo much fun to be had with an ultra wide! Perspective is killer… The new tokina 11-16 pro ii will go perfectly with the addition of the internal focus motor to the lens with the d3100! They are just starting to become readily available. No I do not represent tokina…

        • +1

until you notice that all your photos looks similar when shooting indoors exclusively with that one lens. thats what i mean by boring.

  • ouch, just bought the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II yesterday for over $100. T_T

  • Got a 50mm Prime. but gonna be cropped to 80mm.

Guys, do a good price on 35mm prime please! OR 20mm Prime is also something pretty good.

    EDIT: I think that's cropped to 75mm….. not 80.

    • It'll be around 80mm on a crop sensor :)

  • I would have bought the Canon 50mm had I not already bought the 24-105mm L lens yesterday. Owned this lens in the past, great lens for the price but a bit on the noisy/slow side.

  • +1

The Canon 50 f1.8 II is a good lens for beginners. But be warned, after trying it you will either let it collecting dust in the cupboard and keep using your zoom lens OR you will start dreaming about Canon prime "L" lenses! :-)

  • so what's the total price with shipping cost for the canon 50mm f1.8??? Until when?

    • too easy….read the title and description, then add the price of the lens to the price of the shipping. Your answer will be the total price.

  • i did some research and notice that you can get cheaper price 7 month ago for canon 50mm…
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/60068

would love that groupons deal again :)

    • If only we were 7 months ago… Can't do it sorry :(

  • We saw you weren't a fan of buying caps… So, we'll give you one for free

A cap darn well should come stock standard with a lens anyway.

    • A baseball cap we mean :)

    • this is baseball cap :)

      edit: opss beaten by rep

  • How well would something like this work?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Close-Up-Lens-Set-Canon-EF-50mm-f…

    • +1

They work OK. But don't expect the quality of a macro lens out of them.

    • Extension rings would give more magnification with a short lens like this.

Close-up lenses work better on longer focal lengths 100mm+
If you have a 70-300 zoom or similar @300mm they will give a very impressive magnification

  • +1

Just bought the canon 50mm f/1.4 lens from you guys, that's also on special everyone!

Thank you for the great special, I used the FREEMELB coupon for free delivery, I hope that okay rep :).

Looking into something more sturdy than the f/1.8, and the f/1.4 was the perfect choice haha.

    • -1

Just bought the canon 50mm f/1.4 lens from you guys, that's also on special everyone!

If this is grey stock, then that's the usual price and nothing special.

      • I think you may be comparing them to overseas companies that don't have a shop here and also don't pay GST. (which you can get back if registered or flying OS within 30 days I think it is)

You do realise they are all made in the same factory overseas and that there is no Canon factory in Australia, don't you?

        "nothing special" - really?
I mean I can walk into their shop and pick it up and also return it if need be and it's $84
If you can better that, please do.

        • Well the fact is that they are comparable to both overseas companies and local companies.

They are similar to overseas companies in the sense that they are selling the exact same 'grey import' stock as viewed by Canon Australia for warranty purposes. The fact that they have a local shop or pay GST has no bearing on this.

They are only comparable to local companies in the sense that they do in fact have a local store. I can't comment on their returns policy as I've never had to use it and don't live in Brisbane. I guess for anyone not in Brisbane dealing interstate would be similar to dealing with any other local repair agent appointed by a international seller.

        • -3

There are a few local store that sells grey imports and they are selling this lens at the same price if not cheaper. This is what I mean by "nothing special"!

        • Well that's twice you've written that, but not followed it up with any links or current examples.Make sure you add the shipping cost too as some of the OS ones are very high.

I am in the market I truly want to know where the best value is.
If you can do better then please share.

        • So you keep saying. With no evidence, why bother? Just makes you look stupid when you do it repeatedly.

        • -4

Just for the people like you who are too lazy do their own search, here is a link I specially prepared for you. And stop posting unnecessary comments. Just make yourself look stupid.

          http://bit.ly/Rkflsp

          You are welcome!

        • +4

The concept that seems to be eluding (very successfully) is that given you're the one making the claim, it's up to you to back it up. Making claims and providing no evidence is just dumb.

Also, that's the stupidest use of LMGTFY that I've ever seen.

  • Thanks guys, have been looking to pair a 50mm lens with my Canon 450D for a while now.. At this price I couldn't resist.

Hope it will great for portraits~. ;)

  • awesome - just bought one - fast checkout and free coupon code for free shipping thanks Chongy

  • Just got the 50mm Canon, FREEMELB works for free shipping anywhere, thanks for the heads up :) Also good deal!

  • Any chance on a deal for a Nikon f/1.4 G

  • +5

REVOKED MY "+VE" FOR THE DEAL AS FOUND OUT YOU DELIBERATELY MISLED CUSTOMERS WITH "AUSTRALIAN STOCK!"

    STOCKS ARE GREY IMPORTS!

    -VE FOR DISHONESTY!

    • +1

Grey imports and we still pay GST?

No Paypal support. Direct Deposit is available, but slow.

Hm… Grey imports on these camera parts are not bad - normally 3 days. Placed an order with a grey import site Friday evening, received the flash Monday lunch time (Most AU online sellers cannot manage that for orders placed Friday evening I reckon).

    • Are regular overseas-shipped grey imports cheaper?

      • The Canon is cheaper regardless AFAIK. The Nikon is cheaper on eBay by $5~ delivered but if you're picking up then this is cheapest I can find.

        • This is still a good deal then. Shipping would be quicker too.

    • -4

Once again, we class Australian Stock as stock that is in Australia and serviced/warranted in Australia. Cheers

      • +3

What you have is a Parallel Imported stock. It does not matter if the stock is in Australia or not.

That's like saying all the Duracell Batteries with Chinese Writing selling at the Reject Shop is Genuine Australian stock. I know I can return them if they're faulty, but will Duracell Australia accept them if Reject Shop goes broke? I don't think so.

And that's the same in this case.

Becareful what you define as Australian Stock as if someone has a grudge on you guys, and reports that you have been representing Parallel Imports as Austrlaian Stock to the ACCC, you will have no legs to stand on.

        • -3

Some people seem to be a little confused about this -

No Canon cameras or Canon lenses have ever been in Australia period

There is no such thing as an Australian Canon camera or lens!

        • +4

I assume your sentence was supposed to say 'made' in Australia.

No one ever claimed that they were made in Australia.

The reason people value and pay a premium for 'Australian stock' is because of the local manufacturer warranty. This does NOT have local manufacturer warranty. The majority of buyers will see the words 'Australian stock' and think this has local warranty.

This is borderline misleading and deceptive.

        • I assume your sentence was supposed to say "This does not have local manufacturer warranty" :P

        • lol touche. Thanks - edited!

  • thanks!

  • What is the 50mm lens for?
What is so great about this lens over the standard 18-55 lens?

    Thanks for some answers.

    • Your 18-55 will never reach the f stop wide open aperture that this fixed lens can.

  • I just picked up my order thanks CamersDirect a great buy and love the extras http://instagram.com/p/N0Nzfph50A/ ps y u no have Instagram account?
