        • Sorry was thinking of previous offer of bonus FB points where you can probably scan later. This is 10% off with FB

        • Must have already exceeded the 5 limit.

How can someone just blindly pay $2575? Do they not look at the EFT machine before tapping??

      • He would rather have his bank card declined like someone above.

      • he cashed it up

      • and blindly buy a extra 5 cards more then your allowed lol

        • double dip

    • You can't buy more than 5 though??

      • @Koipanda, I think Coles' controls this time is via Flybuys, which is uniquely tied to one person via Mobile number & Email. Last time I remember, you didn't need Flybuys so the control check was store reps remembering your face.

Now it's much tighter! Appreciate this move, managed to grab 5 today 😇

Plenty of 100s in chatswood coles, but none 250s :((

    • Thanks for the heads up. Will check later in the week - last time I know they got a restock at the weekend.

      • That’s the coles at Chatswood Chase
Not sure the one at Westfield

      • URGENT! They have 2 boxes of stock available at the service desk, just now chatswood chase

      • @Zippy7

        • +1

Thank you @bird380 - I got some at the Chase.

  • Plenty of $250’s at Hornsby Westfield - at service desk

Looks like these doesn’t work on Wise anymore.

  • Does Vanilla inception work? Can you use these cards to buy more? Anyone tried?

    • Curious as well has some tried it yet?

      • they fixed that

        • At self checkout only though right?

    • Any card with a balance of $18.25 may get cancelled.

      • Can it be cancelled just like that??

  • I went again in the evening and they said no stock

    • I am going to my local store at around 11 pm to see if they have restock…

  • Do these get restocked in the middle of the sales period?

    • I hope so

    • +1

Last promotion the local Coles manager told me that they get random deliveries within the day. It looks like the same this time as I went in the morning before 9am and oos then come 6pm and they have the full box of gc.

  • Does purchasing these gift cards count towards flybuy points?

I couldn't find anything about it on flybuys page. Accidentally purchased a Coles card for money spend to count for Status credits. None of the points counted and then I found a clause on giftcards.com.au that they don't count.

Do the VISA cards count? Can i purchase VISA cards with my Coles gift card?

    • yes you can

    • +1

They count towards flybuys in the sense that you'll earn flybuys points and they'll include the spend total to calculate those spend $X get Y points offers. But they do not count towards the VA SC that you get for every $100 spent in a month nor do they go towards fulfilling those spend $X get Y points offers.

      • Pity. But thank you for that.

  • +2

Looks like stock levels are very stable. I guess 5 max is stopping a lot of people

    • How does 5 max limits people when there are enough flybuys cards freely around the counters?

      • Most don't realize it. And too much mucking-around may result in paying full price inattentively, i.e. not scan a flybuys.

If you have some barcode knowledge, you know that a random flybuys barcode can be generated easily.

        • +1

No need to generate a barcode

Pick up a temp card for the pile next to self serve checkout

  • Another 5 x 250 cards nom nom nom

    Thanks wealthy suburbs

    • What should we do with this information 🤗

      • Run don’t walk!

    • I drove 15km from work and bang wealthy suburb has plenty in stock and those who are buying are Asian… ! (4 people before me from same family each with 5 cards) … LoL

      • Nobody wants to reveal their wealthy suburb lol

        • +1

I bet if I disclose than not only this time but in next deal as well I won't be able to find card there.

But only hint I can give is they are north of Sydney… So don't bother looking at western Sydney suburb.

          • @SydBoy: Totally untrue. I am not far from the location you mentioned in the topic.

            • @Neoika: If you can find $250 card in any of Coles in western Sydney (excludes blue mountains) than either you are lucky or staff putting out small quantities everyday… !

            • +1

@Neoika: Went again today to same store third time and they have about 100 x $250 cards stocked. If i mention suburb, game over

              • @easternculture: agree, don't ever share suburb name and i won't that either else all my asian cousins (like me) will be there … with moms & dads and uncles & aunts… so one should not disclose suburb name at any cost… !

  • Pretty sure some stores are selling proportional amount everyday now. Not many yesterday lunchtime, none this morning, a lot today lunchtime.

    • Probably had more stock come in during the morning. They're usually courier delivered.

      • I didn't visit it yesterday morning as not planned to buy much. Also sometimes the delivery may have not arrived that early.

  • Why isn't the $400 one on discount :(

    • P.S Look at the belt register where they place gum and stuff.

Yesterday i had a experience with a manager and she was acting all high authority and asked for my drivers license and bank card which i gave . She was staring at it for 2 minutes then gives it back to me, then she put it through and i said to put through split payment and she said no im not doing that i asked her why, and she said you just called me "shit" i said no i didn't , why are u saying that , then she smiled and said cause i can and i don't want to serve you and acting all high and mighty . I said let me speak to the supervisor and she said i am the only one here and i the manager. So i said well you are on camera for acting like this for no reason and im going to make a complain. So i rang coles complaints line and gave her name and said pls look at the video camera at the coles store how she was acting to customers before me and me as well.

      Good on ya mate

    • She might be looking to get you back of the store but you didn't read the signal well… !

If you want action write to them and cc the CEO, several senior executives from their Customer Service, Current Affairs, The Age, etc. Provide all the info. Companies ignore verbal complaints. This way you get to send it again every week. Also with the cc's they have to take action so that if any of those people contact them they can explain what action they are taking.

      • With Current Affairs, The Age etc, is it better to email the journalists themselves or the executives?

      • Thank you , no one has yet got back to me from the complaint department.

    • +2

Why you did handover the drivers licence?

If it's not in written policy, you should make a complaint and tell them their staff is breaching privacy laws and allege that they are going to committ fraud by using your personal information.

      • I thought they had the right to ask for driver license and bank card. When I made the complaint I did mention she asked for it. Well no one has rang me back about the complaint.

        • If it's in the process of confirming the payment card does in deed belongs to you, they may request, but they can't demand. If you refuse the request they can deny accepting that method of payment if they suspect the card isn't your's.

  • Can I use 3 x $250 of these in eBay to purchase an item worth $700?

    .

    • You would have to buy GCs with 2

  • I'll be in Sydney for work next week and I'll have a rental car and a couple of hours to kill before the rest of my team need collecting from the airport. Can anyone suggest which stores closer to the airport might be worth looking at for cards?

    • most suburb closer to airport are full of asian (like myself) so forget about trying anything there in my opinion… !

Just go to rich suburbs. You will find plenty

Already bought 15 over 3 days from same store

    • -3

Yes there is woolies nearby your location. If you have access to your team ask them to check the internet .

  • Can confirm recieved flybuys points
2200 so far which offsets the 0.6% fee for payment with credit cards for utilities

  • Seems there is no stock of 250 in rich suburbs of Syd either.

  • Thanks Op, my $10k quota is completed.

I was able to buy from my local store in 5 trips. They still had plenty left.

      Mt Druitt ?

          • @aeaeae: Dont know. I am done and dont need more for time being.

      So its 5 per day.

  • Has anyone used these at a merchant where it asked for pin (and couldn't skip this option, the "enter" key was greyed out). I selected "credit" I initially but wondering if I should've chosen a different option

    • +1

It sounds like that merchant is mandating a PIN to be provided, which means that these prepaid gift cards are not redeemable at that merchant.

In my experience, entering random numbers (e.g. 0000) as a PIN would not work, because you would then be attempting to authenticate the transactions using a PIN, which is something these prepaid gift cards do not support.

I know on some St George- and Westpac-branded EFTPOS terminals, there is an option on the PIN prompt screen to authenticate using a signature instead, but judging by your comment, that does not apply to your situation.

Selecting Credit was the correct thing to do, because these prepaid gift cards operate on the Visa network. If you selected Savings or Cheque, you would have been attempting to route the payment through the EFTPOS network, which is not a supported network on these prepaid gift cards.

      • This really sucks. Really limits the usefulness of these cards. Guess that's what Heritage bank wants anyways. Was able to use Coles MC from last time on Opal topup machines, however, with Vanilla VISA, the Opal top up machine says "Transaction declined by Bank. Please use a different card".

@WookieMonster - I suppose other than merchants enforcing PIN, the card may not be redeemable in-store for purchases >$100 since those are mandatory to be PIN verified. Now I'm hoping to build up a list of Merchants that accept signature (e.g Westpac & St. George), and those that don't.

        • +1

Really limits the usefulness of these cards. Guess that's what Heritage bank wants anyways.

Signature verification is still very much a valid way of authorising a transaction, but it is definitely unusual in Australia. Although the ability to use signature verification for Australian-issued debit and credit cards in Australia was dropped in 2014, there are still a few scenarios where signature verification is still allowed, including:

          • Signature-only cards (and some Australian banks still issue these cards for accessibility reasons)
          • International cards
          • Cards with no chips

It is not as though Vanilla Visa gift cards are the only reason signature verification still happens in Australia!

I also would not blame Heritage Bank, as my understanding is that they only handle transactions on behalf of InComm (the gift card scheme owner). I would blame InComm, because they obviously do not want to spend the time and money updating the gift card scheme they own to allow PIN verification. It is even more curious that Coles Mastercard gift cards (which are basically rebranded Vanilla Visa gift cards) allow you set a PIN if you want to. To be fair, the Coles Mastercard gift card scheme is much newer than the Vanilla Visa gift card scheme, so Coles probably got InComm to come up with a system to let you set a PIN.

the card may not be redeemable in-store for purchases >$100 since those are mandatory to be PIN verified

          Not quite.

The threshold you refer to is for contactless purchases using a physical card. The threshold changes when you move away from this example. For example:

          • If you use a card from a mobile wallet via NFC to pay for a purchase, you will not be asked for a PIN. For example, I have purchased nearly $1000 worth of gift cards from Coles using a mobile wallet and was not asked for a PIN. However, when I tapped my physical credit card in another (similar) transaction a couple of minutes after, I was asked to provide a PIN.

          • All refund transactions I have done using a mobile wallet or a physical card have asked for a PIN, no matter the refund amount.

          • When swiping a card on an EFTPOS terminal to pay for a purchase, I have found that different merchants have different thresholds before asking for a PIN. For example, Coles' threshold is around $35, Woolworths and BIG W seem to be about $1 or $2 (it seems to be incredibly low), some eating places always ask for a PIN, whereas other eating places will happily let me for a $15 purchase without asking for a PIN. It's really inconsistent.

Now I'm hoping to build up a list of Merchants that accept signature (e.g Westpac & St. George), and those that don't.

I do not think it will be as simple as that, because signature verification is reliant on whether the merchant is comfortable approving the transaction based on the signature provided and the signature on the card (and even the signature on any ID you may carry). For example, I know that Australia Post allows for signature verification, but an OzBargainer told me earlier this week that they were told by a staff member that they had to provide a PIN to authenticate any transactions.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks a ton WookieMonster for yet another comprehensive guidance. You're doing God's work for us newbies here on OZB.

Noted and understood re scheme owner. My bad for confusing the contactless payment & physical in-store card thresholds. I personally feel these cards aren't as useful as they should be given they're carrying the VISA logo. VISA should mean it'll work and be accepted anywhere without having to worry, I wonder if this merchant accepts NO PIN transaction.

Nevertheless, the 7.3% discount is still great to have, so going to use my cards happily even though need to jump some hoops.

  • Saw someone buy 4 cards then wait to help desk lol

  • Saw a guy buy 30 x $100 Vanilla VISA cards. He was premitted to buy, got me really surprised. I wanted to take a u-turn and grab some more lol. Decided against it, Vanilla VISA are less useful due to signature verification.

    • +1

30 x $100 is hardly worth the time

      • Agreed! Barely worth the time in driving down to Coles and stacking up. Not to mention the stress thereafter in using or liquidating them all. Liquidation is gonna eat into processing fees so wasn't worth it. I'm honestly not so sure why I bought a couple $100 ones myself 🤦🏽

Gonna pay up some online bills and get rid of em. Don't find it too exciting to carry these cards around and be hopeful that a merchant is accepting signature verification.

  • +1

Got 5 x $250 at Rouse Hills Coles.
Plenty of $100 left but $250s are fairly limited. Check out guy was lovely and pleasant, explaining how it’s a lot better now with the flybuys requirement (limiting how often people can do multiple times on the same day)

    • @marka - this was true for Coles MC cards. You can do self-serve PIN setup or enter any PIN in-store on your 1st transaction.

Vanilla VISA website allows you to only register the card with your personal details - name, address, mob, email, even route the card through your home/work IP 😱 but not set PIN 🤦🏽

To my experience, registering the card hasn't had any incremental benefits in performing transactions. Apart from PayPal, seems like cash advances are hard blocked.

      • Ah I see. you're right.

  • No $250s at all at Coles Windsor (NSW)

  • Citibank Credit card fails when trying to purchase these gift cards, and they don't even to notify you. All that you get is fail transaction/failed PIN on the Eftpos Terminal!

    • +2

Bought mine with citi credit card. Nil issues

      • Same here.

    • Might be Citibank fraud protection kicking in. What did Citi say?

      • No email or SMS from them & I couldn't be bothered with calling and talking to foreigners. I used my NAB Debit card instead.
