It depends on the currency exchange really! The reason we see more bargains from overseas recently is because of strong AUD at the moment.

Before anyone chimes in with their wisdom of how they can get one cheaper from X, make sure you observe this drive is a 2.5" drive and not a 3.5" when comparing prices.

  • I got this one, running not too bad. I am only getting around 30~50mb/sec max on usb3 port copying mix files. takes about 2 weeks to arrive from usa.

  • Also bear in mind you'll have no warranty on the complete unit and that if you ever do have to ship the bare drive back for replacement, the shipping costs will be more than it's worth.

    • Maybe Seagate have better support then WD

I recently have to deal with WD regarding a 3.5" external drive. Brought from JB and within a week, the drive stopped working.

Called WD (Don't use email support, they don't reply) and ran through troubleshoot with them. In the end I was issued a RMA and ask to send my drive to them and get a replacement.

Sending my drive to them cost me $50 because the RMA asked to be sent to Malaysia. Warranty or not, I'm out of pocket $170 for the drive and $50 for replacement.

      • Either way we Aussie consumer loose. Buy here, pay the difference due to higher over head cost..buy overseas, pay for return ship costs… Guess time is of the essence. If you have time to spare…you can wait. If not, buy locally for convenience and save your time. My two cents…

        • "Buy here, pay the difference due to higher over head cost."
actually the majority of the extra cost is just the Manufacturer/Importer wanting to (and having the ability to) price the items at a higher price here than a market overseas…

A week! JB should have dealt with it.

        • you are a big fan of JB.

" Brought from JB and within a week, the drive stopped working."
There is no way you should have or would have had to send this back to WD yourself if you had taken it into JB with the RMA number (you really didn't even have to get an RMA number but it makes the returning to retail store much easier as they cant argue regarding a return)

"Warranty or not, I'm out of pocket $170 for the drive and $50 for replacement."
Buy it locally, you have warranty
Import it, then you may was well assume you have no warranty. Thats the simple breakdown

Aussie law is return to place of purchase - they have to deal with it…. including any shipping costs etc

    • Also bear in mind you'll have no warranty on the complete unit and that if you ever do have to ship the bare drive back for replacement, the shipping costs will be more than it's worth.

What? That doesn't sound right. Why would you not have warranty on the complete unit? And why would you have warranty on a drive you removed from its case?

    • hello australia retailer.

  • For anyone who ordered at the previous price, jump on live chat and ask politely for a refund of the difference. I just got it.

    • Is this policy or just luck?

      • Not policy (any more) but whenever I ask nicely I have been refunded.

        • Their response: "With the exception of TVs, Amazon doesn't offer a price match guarantee. We do consistently work toward maintaining competitive prices on everything we carry. Because the marketplace is constantly changing and we strive to offer the lowest price, you'll see some fluctuations in our prices over time.
However, you can let us know about a lower price by clicking the "tell us about a lower price" link in the Product Details section of any product page."
          NOT HAPPY :-(

        • "Thanks for contacting us about the recent price change on hard drive. I recognize you have a choice of retailers and appreciate that you prefer to order from us. Unfortunately, we do not have a post-order price guarantee.

Under the circumstances, I'll make an exception for you and issue a refund for the price difference in the amount of $6.10. You should see the refund in the next 2-3 business days"

Did you do the live chat? I did and politely explained the circumstances and requested a price match. Has worked every time so far.

        • Yeah I did that and I was very polite….but…thanks anyway

    can it be wireless accessed?

    • +2

its a USB hard drive… what in the description makes you think it would be a network attached storage with built in wireless? (or didnt you read any of it?)

  • It all comes down to this: Australian retailers want to make huge profits and do not care whether or not they rip their customers off. I would not be surprised if they had secret price arrangements on many products as in many areas there is simply no competition.
It will only change when people either refuse to buy anything or refuse to buy from them by buying from overseas stores.

    • the majority of the times its the Australian distributor rather than the 'end' retailer.. e.g. Sony australia charge an AU retailer much more than Sony US charges a US retailer..
but i guess its easier to just blame the 'end' retailer for the entire price difference..

      • Sometimes you are right. But more often than not it is not the distirbutor. I worked for a company making cosmetics and other consumer products and they price we sold the products at was the same regardless of whether it was to Germany, the US, France, or Australia. Yet the prices in Australia was higher, so much that we had to admonish the Australians to lower prices so we do not lose market share.
Australia is a rip-off in many areas - there is no way around that fact.

  • Thanks. I just ordered one.

Be careful, there are two releases of this hard drive. One is STAA1000101 and there is a note at the bottom of the display for this to check for a newer model, which gets you the model STBU1000100 for the same price. But only the older one can be shipped to my delivery address.

  • Price now US$119.99 plus shipping so the price above is now expired.
