Arlec 8-Outlet USB Powerboard - 2 Pack - $15 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store/ OnePass with $80 Order) @ Bunnings

3580

Setting up a man cave and was using a bunch of 4 outlet powerboards. Thought I would look on Bunnings and get an 8 outlet to tidy it all up and saw this. Seem very cheap for 2 of them, with some USB ports as well. Not sure on the quality. Can't imagine it's fantastic.

Therapy. Time to break the mindset. You can do this.

        • +1

          I'm scared! 😳

        • Nooooo

          Its just wrong

    • +52

Kinda makes sense. Wide power bricks can use the spaced out side and regular plugs can use the other side.

      • +55

They could have aligned the 3 to the top and still have the spaced-out sides.

Something like this would have kept the symmetry

        • +10

Send this picture to them as an "after" photo and tell them they failed and that you should replace the lead product designer.

        • +12

Thank you. My OCD was triggered looking at the product.

        • +2

          Nice paint job.

        • +1

The way it had been designed probably uses less internal material (wiring) compared to for you have designed it.

        • +10

On your design, the centre ones might touch in the middle (assuming a round, oval or triangular shape). On the actual version they are all offset from each other (albeit slightly), so theoretically less likely to block each other.

        • This makes me even more mad knowing how simple this change would be 😂

One of the only times I'd screw practicality over aesthetics

      • +1

I think they should have spaced them out further. They have largely wasted some space.

      • Segregation you say?

    • +11

Ahahaha, why didn't they just make a standard 8 port, this is really funny :D

Edit: Hang on, the spacing for the triple is wider. That's a totally sensible design. The close spacing of standard Oz sockets really annoys me. The power bars with wide spacing are harder to find and more expensive. I like this!

      • +1

Yes that is fine, but they could still have made it central (keeping the same spacing), or even made it wider lol. No matter their idea, they had enough space to make it look more symmetrical.

    • now I cant unseen it! Why?!

  • Looks like it has been this price for over a month?

  • +5

looking a good one with on and off switches

    • Jackson sometimes goes on half price at woolies. They do a reasonable quality with individually switched outlets.

  • +10

Says dual USB-A but I reckon the picture is one USB-A and one USB-C.
Or…..Is it time for me to go find a specsavers deal?

    • +1

You can zoom in to the first image and see a USB C port.

You can even see the indentation for what would have been the USB A port.

      • +6

Yet the description is "Dual 3.4A USB A Charging Ports" and I guess it's safe to assume this is what it is (and pass).

        edit:
        Kmart's USB-C model is PB8PPUC, this one here says PB8PPU-2PK (ie. there's no C), so it's 2xUSB-A at Bunnings.

Good deal but note that these power boards do not have Surge Protection.

    • +10

Surge protection is imo hugely overrated and counterproductive on power boards. Because… after a while they stop working- they can only buffer a certain volume across time. And once they start working, the cheap ones like most the ones on the market don't warn you.

So if you've got an old surge protector board sitting around after years, it could well be doing nothing except fooling the owner that they are protecting their electronics.

      • Not hard just another surge protection plug at the wall

        • +2

          Not necessary. Already built in.

        • +2

We don't need no surge control

      • +2

its still not a good idea to buy cheap electronics

        • +2

A power bar is not 'electronics'. Electrical goods yes, but there is nothing sensitive or complex, it's just wiring and busses.

    • +3

You sure. The image shows surge protected?

      • -5

Yeah, I stand corrected. I only read the features section.

    • +2

I'm confused now. The product description says it comes with Safety Overload Protection and the picture seems to have a Surge Protection stamp on it. Are we looking at the wrong picture/product linked or are you saying the Surge Protection description is false?

      • +1

It’s got both surge protection & safety overload - it’s in the details

  • Ordered Click and collect. Thanks OP!

  • Dual 3.4A USB A Charging Ports

Why does one of the USB A ports look like a USB C port?
Also, is that a Kensington lock slot between them??

    • +4

That is highly likely to be total 3.4A.

    • +1

Also, is that a Kensington lock slot between them??

      It's an LED

    • The fourth photo is clearly showing a model with USB-C port along with a USB-A port. 1 x USB-C and 1 x USB-A ports. That's strange.

      • +1

        Kmart's USB-C model is PB8PPUC, this one here says PB8PPU-2PK (ie. there's no C), so it's 2xUSB-A at Bunnings.

        • I see. Thanks for that.

I suppose you could use a USB-A to USB-C cable with this powerboard from Bunnings.

      • Was wondering what you were all on about, I guess they removed the confusing images as there are only 2 now.

Now they just need to fix the specs:

        Individually Switched (Yes/No): Yes
        Number of Outlets: 4
        Wide Spaced Outlets: No

  • +2

    Good port/price ratio!

  • Nice find good bargain Thanks

  • +1

The picture is weird. It's 2 USB As not a C.

  • Thanks OP, got one.

    • +3

      Not 2 in a pack ?

    • +3

      Can you confirm whether it’s 2 x USB-A, as described or 1 x USB-A and 1 x USB-C, as pictured?

      • +1

I too would like to know

        • Like Uncle Danny from Full House, you oughta know…

      • +3

        It's 2 X USB-A

Plug in eight heymix chargers and get a free heater

      • LOL! Nicely done…

  • +2

Love powerboards with usb ports on them. Useful in a work space where USB chargers constantly disappeared.

    • +1

Funny thing is I have never used the USB outlets in a powerboard. I always tuck my powerboards away out of sight in a cable tray or tied to the leg of a table. Never ever on the table yet i will search for an hour to plug a charger into said powerboard.

      I deserve to be punished!

  • I've got one from Kmart, a single one there is currently $32. Works fine, bit slow to charge things via USB but fine for overnight etc. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/arlec-8-outlet-entertainmen…

  • Description says not wall mountable :(

    • +3

Use a couple of adhesive 3M and you'll be alright

    • Or cable ties around leg of table if feasible. One bottom one top of same colour as powerboard.

  • +10

99% of all Arlec products are junk.

If you want take your chances, it's foolhardy.

This company is a landfill importer.

    • +1

Yep…if we are to go one step further….most of the big stores around the Aus are just resellers of these types of land fill importers.

      • +1

        A neg… for a fact. Here's an upvote.

    • +6

If have to choose between Arlec and Heymix :D

    • +3

Yup, can't think of an Arlec product I haven't returned or wanted to return (but couldn't be assed).
      Lights, fans, it's all junk.

    • -1

They've perfected the art over many years. I bought a nicad battery charger in the early 1980s that did most batteries including 9V and button cells, but years later realised some DimSum company had stuck THEIR name over Arlec's. That's how nasty they were/are. The stupid thing never worked properly but I was a little kid who had wasted his savings, didn't realise for a long time it barely worked, and so I couldn't do anything about it if I had. It's always been a junk brand.

    • +2

Depends on what you buy. I have lights, power boards and other essentials form this brand and works no problem for years and are still strong.
Not the best quality but I cannot complain the price and value. I could go with Belkin or other good brands but they are just overkill for me.

      • +2

Yep I'm just saying when the difference is between $7 for low quality, or $14 for known quality…

Look, if this thing were down on the floor, behind a TV display cabinet, where it would only be moved every few years when someone moved house or bought a new TV… sure. But it could also be used in a kitchen where high current appliances like toasters and kettles are getting plugged/unplugged constantly. I wouldn't spend Belkin prices either. But 240V mains supply is one of the last places people should be choosing to save $7.

      • -1

Belkin is not a good brand. Belkin is an expensive brand. All the Belkin products I've ever encountered were on the junk/meh/ok side of the spectrum, never great.

  • How many joule? Ty.

I got these last week but don't know how good they are…for someone else to assess :)

    • -1

Thanks, but different product. Expensive and no USB on yours.

      • -1

It's a 2PK so 16 outlets for $20, cheaper per outlet if you don't need the usb.

        • +10

          You’ve been math-murdered…

          2 x 8 outlets + 2 x 0 USB @ $20 <
          2 x 8 outlets + 2 x 2 USB @ $15.

You’ve been hit by, you’ve been hit by a smooth mathemal…

          • @UncleRico: Sorry, didn't realise this one is also a 2PK. Fair enough.

            • +3

              @megadeth: Don’t give it a second thought.

              I don’t wanna be startin’ somethin’…

    • i got these for my pc set. they work fine.

    • Plus looking at the layout you're really only restricted to two extra large plugs.

    • I've got some cheap cordtech extension cables into powerbars.

They are about as cheap and shitty as arlec- the sockets in the powerbar section misalign easily so it's hard to get plugs into.

So you get what you pay for. It'll probably work, but it's not high quality stuff.

    • Was in Bunnings looking for something to replace those dodgy Heymix boosts and saw the cordtech stuff. I thought they looked ok, but when I read some reviews it sounds like they're garbage quality. Spent all their money on branding and superficial design elements rather than making a quality product. But the bullet and bought some giant Belkins.

  • There’s always a first time……to click and collect at Bunnings. Thanks OP.
