Just a heads up that the Ultimate gift card scheme underwent a minor revamp over the last two days, with participating retailers being added and removed from a number of gift cards.

In terms of brand new participating retailers:

    • Crust was added to the Eats and Everyone gift cards

    • Donut King was added to the Eats, Everyone and Students gift cards

    • Gloria Jean's was added to the Eats, Everyone and Teens gift cards

    • Hoyts was added to the Everyone, Her, Him, Kids, Students and Teens gift cards

    • INTERSPORT was added to the Active & Wellness, Everyone, Him and Teens gift cards

    • Ovolo Hotels was added to the Everyone and Home gift cards

    • UFC Fight Pass was added to the Active & Wellness, Everyone, Him and Students gift cards

In terms of existing participating retailers:

    • Cotton On Body was added to the Baby & Mum and Teens gift cards

    • Foot Locker was added to the Style/Shopping gift card

    • Goldmark was added to the Everyone gift card

    • Thankly was removed from the Thanks gift card, which means it is no longer a participating retailer of the Ultimate gift card scheme

    • Typo was added to the Students gift card

    Here we go again.

    • +4

      10% on or 9.09% off.

  • +1

Will this inception work with coles vanilla visa cards

    • No reason why it won't work.

    • No, big w doesn't accept visa gift cards to buy gift cards

  • Can these gift cards be used for google play store?

    • +7

      Ctrl + F takes a min only

    • +5

Not directly (hence the comment above).

However, if you grab an Ultimate gift card that is redeemable at JB Hi-Fi, you can probably use it instore to purchase a Google Play gift card. (I say probably, because you may run into a staff member who will stop customers using gift cards to purchase Google Play gift cards, even though that policy is not really written anywhere. However, if you only say you want to use a card as a payment method and staff don’t notice what you are trying to swipe or they do not ask to see what card you have stored on your mobile wallet, you will likely get away with it.)

I would not recommend trying this at Officeworks, even though they also sell Google Play gift cards (both instore and online). Officeworks has in recent times published an entire webpage saying you cannot use any type of gift card at their store to purchase any gift cards. I have also noticed a lot of staff now asking customers to show the payment method they intend to use if they are wanting to purchase a gift card, so I would save the potential hassle and avoid Officeworks. Additionally, I have heard a number of stories that Officeworks is extremely inconsistent with their acceptance of Ultimate gift cards on their online store irrespective of whether you are trying to purchase a gift card or something else online, so you have been warned.

      • staff don’t notice what you are trying to swipe or they do not ask to see what card

Don't think it will work that way.
If paying with credit/debit etc, checkout operator will need to invoke the EFTPOS etc function on terminal.
if paying with gift card, it will most likely involve a different button to be pressed by operator. Hence they will know before you swipe

At least that's how it is on supermarkets self serve checkouts. Different buttons for different type pf payments

        • +1

If paying with credit/debit etc, checkout operator will need to invoke the EFTPOS etc function on terminal.
if paying with gift card, it will most likely involve a different button to be pressed by operator. Hence they will know before you swipe

In the context I was talking about, you are making no sense.

Ultimate gift cards are really just prepaid Visa gift cards redeemable at a group of merchants, so JB Hi-Fi handles their redemption instore the same way as a Visa debit/credit card. I was only ever talking about redeeming Ultimate gift cards in my comment above, because the original question was only in regards to Ultimate gift cards.

If I was talking about redeeming JB Hi-Fi gift cards, you would be correct, because JB Hi-Fi’s POS system handles the redemption of JB Hi-Fi gift cards (both physical and digital) very differently to the redemption of Visa cards, but that was not the topic of the question.

If you tell a JB Hi-Fi staff member you want to redeem a Gift Card and then swipe an Ultimate gift card on the EFTPOS terminal, the POS system will not know what to do. That happened to my mate last week at JB Hi-Fi when they were complaining to me that JB Hi-Fi suddenly stopped accepting Ultimate Home gift cards. However, after I told them to actually redeem it like a Visa card, they went back and it suddenly worked!

Additionally, if you tell a JB Hi-Fi staff member you want to redeem a Gift Card and then get the staff member to scan the barcode on the back of a physical Ultimate gift card, the checkout will spit out an error, because you just got the staff member to scan the activation barcode (which is only used for activation purposes and thus is never used for redemption purposes).

At least that's how it is on supermarkets self serve checkouts. Different buttons for different type pf payments

It appears you are getting prepaid gift cards mixed up with merchant-specific gift cards.

At Woolworths, if you select Card on the self checkout and then swipe a physical WISH gift card (as an example), you will get an error telling you to choose Gift Card as the payment method. However, if you selected Gift Card on the EFTPOS terminal and then swiped a Vanilla Visa gift card (as an example), you would get an error, because the checkout was expecting a gift card from Woolworths Group (not a prepaid Visa gift card) and therefore would not know what to do.

At Coles, if you select Card on the self checkout, you can swipe a physical Coles gift card (as an example) and redeem it that way. I actually think the checkout will do nothing if you select Gift Card and swipe a physical Coles gift card, because the checkout is expecting you to scan the barcode of a Coles gift card. Additionally, if you have a Vanilla Visa gift card to redeem, select Card, not Gift Card.

          • @WookieMonster: The first digits of a visa or Mastercard is allocated uniquely to different financial providers.

Therefore any point of sale systems are technically capable to see if a credit debit card is belonging to Blackhawk gift card financial division and disallow it.
ZipMoney also have their own id range.

So it is possible to ban prepaid cards, but whether it happens in reality not sure.

            • @cski: It happens instore at Coles and Woolworths.

              • Coles will block you from using a Vanilla Visa gift card or Coles Mastercard gift card or Coles Gift Mastercard to purchase some gift cards at their stores (e.g. Coles Group & Myer gift cards, Vanilla Visa gift cards, Coles Mastercard gift cards).

              • Woolworths will block you from using a Perfect EFTPOS gift card or OnlyONE Visa gift card or Activ Visa gift card to purchase some gift cards at their stores (e.g. Perfect EFTPOS gift cards, Westfield EFTPOS gift cards, OnlyONE Visa gift cards, WISH gift cards, eBay gift cards).

    • It's been so long from last deal

  • +1

    Nice mate

  • +3

Thanks Wookie! I've never bought the bonus deals before. How do we know the deal is live when at the checkout? since there's no upfront discount, how do we know we will receive the 10% bonus before paying? Obviously I'm gonna stock up, and don't wanna get caught out. Thanks!

    • +1

I do not recall ever seeing a bonus value gift card deal at BIG W within the last few years, so I have no clue how it would work at BIG W.

My suspicions is that it would be similar to Woolworths and Coles, where you would not be able to see you will get the 10% bonus before paying.

      • In that case, it's highly risky. I recall clearly multiple times when on the morning of the promotion, Woolworth's POS system had not been updated to reflect the new discounts. Luckily, we could see discount upfront to avoid any risk. In this situation, it's not transparent at all and will probably result in a lot of very angry customers if things go wrong.

        • When we checkout the cards, if we let the checkout know about the promotional bonus happening, then could they make sure the bonus value is added? Anyone knows?

          • +3

@mcha9776: Bought a 100 Home card today. The activation receipt printed after I paid for the cards still read Activation amount as $100. I checked the balance online and it had $110. So, there is no way to know if you did or did not get the bonus at the checkout counter but you can check the balance to confirm the bonus after purchase.

  • +4

Hmm, I hope the 10% discounts don't vanish. This works out to a roughly 9% discount which is annoying…

  • Is this considered a discount. If so what is the %

  • 10% max $100
    In store only… :(

Thanks for the post my good man but this one seems a lot of work. I feel very spoilt after the 15% online Apple one last week and the 500 dollar 10% cards I grabbed a few months ago

  • It's almost like the providers are banking on a business model of unused credit that never gets redeemed and accrues interest.

I still don't understand the rationale from a product category perspective to sell these in store for a perceived discount with your competitors.

    • +2

mostly they sell on the basis that commercial borrowing cost more then 10% without any security but here people give thousands without bothering to check credit history or security… second is that the discount is always to attract customer as many of these products are charged at heavy margin of 30% to 50% gross profit no matter what they gives you they will make money unless you use them for some genuine clearances by big brands…. ! third one is what you say ….. credit never get used but that's not the basis to sell discounted gift card…. !

  • No purchase limit this time ?

    • +3

The terms of the offer do not mention any requirement to use an Everyday Rewards account for this deal, so the purchase limit is either:

      • 10 gift cards per transaction (which is the limit coded into the checkout), or
      • Whatever the staff member serving you dictates the limit to be. For example, if the staff member serving you says you can only buy 5x Ultimate gift cards in one transaction, you are kinda stuck.
      • +1

You may be right. There is no mention in the T&C though. But I do remember after scanning 10 cards, you do get an error that needs staff member's intervention.

  • Woolies then Big W. I'm hoping/guessing a deal will be coming to Coles soon?

    • Hope Coles give 2000 point for $50 Netflix….GC or Uber

  • Pain in the arse for these cards when there's only small amount left. Any chance they could combine all the cards amount together?

    • +1

Unfortunately, there is no straightforward way to combine small amounts together. I would argue that is a deliberate choice made by the gift card issuer in order to maximise the amount of money they can extract out of you.

Your best bet is to redeem them instore at a participating retailer where the staff are usually happy to do split payments (e.g. JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Kathmandu). Officeworks can also do split payments, but whether staff would be happy to do split payments is an entirely different question…

Yes, I know that not everyone can easily get to a physical store, so if that includes you, unfortunately you will be having a hard time using up those gift cards with small balances.

  • So I can buy it 1000$ (100$ x 10)?
and I can use it on Office WOrks??
I haven't bought girft card in AUstralia. SO I can Just pay by my card?

    • +1

I think that's correct, you'll have $110 on each card so $1100 in total to redeem.

    • +1

      So I can buy it 1000$ (100$ x 10)?

      You should be able to.

BIG W’s checkouts will let you purchase a maximum of 10 gift cards in one transaction, plus there is no limit specified in the catalogue itself. However, if you get a staff member who wants to enforce their own limit (e.g. a maximum of 5 gift cards per customer), you may need to visit another time (or visit another store) to purchase all the gift cards you want. Additionally, I don’t know whether all BIG W staff can approve a purchase of $1,000 worth of gift cards, so if a staff member tells you to split your purchase across two transactions, that should be fine. Hopefully your card issuer does not view 2x $500 transactions in quick succession as potentially fraudulent…

The only gift card in this deal that is available in the $100 denomination at BIG W (at least for the store I visited on the weekend) and can be redeemed at Officeworks is the Ultimate Home gift card. That is probably going to be the most popular gift card in this deal, so I wish you luck finding it in stock!

and I can use it on Office WOrks??

Only the Ultimate gift cards with Officeworks as a participating retailer can be redeemed at Officeworks.

Also, make sure to look at the FAQ linked to in the deal description. There is a FAQ around the number of Ultimate gift cards you can redeem at Officeworks (instore, online and over the phone), which is something you should consider before committing to purchase any Ultimate gift cards.

SO I can Just pay by my card?

Yes, a card from a financial institution (e.g. debit card, credit card) should be fine.

      • @WookieMonster
        Damm you are legend!
Yeah so I make sure ask to office work employee before I buy the gift card
Also, I didn't know that some officework allow one girftcard per one trade.
        hmmm

        • Yeah so I make sure ask to office work employee before I buy the gift card

I don’t know how helpful that would be, because you may not see the same staff member by the time you go back to Officeworks to make a purchase!

I didn't know that some officework allow one girftcard per one trade.
          hmmm

It’s very random, but that is unfortunately something that can happen (and realistically, it can happen at any business, not just Officeworks).

If that happens, try at a different store (if that is an option) or at a different time and hope you get a different staff member. Officeworks’ instore checkouts can definitely handle split payments, and the only situation where staff are not really supposed to allow split payments is if you are purchasing a gift card from Officeworks.

          • +1

thanks for the advice!! and finger crossed hope I can meet decent OW worker!
            Sincerly

          • @WookieMonster: @WookieMonster
I just call to local officeworks and they said it is okay to bring 10 100$ giftcards

            Just for small question
If I buy 100$ giftcard will that contain 110$? it self?
or should I do something to get extra 10% (such as have to register all card on their webpage or activate?)

            • +1

              @wwc: Good to hear!

If I buy 100$ giftcard will that contain 110$? it self?

              That should be what happens.

If it is anything like the bonus 10% deals for Myer gift cards at Coles or Woolworths, you will be asked to pay $100 for a $100 Ultimate Home gift card. When the gift card is being activated after you purchase it, the initial balance would usually be $100. However, for this deal, the initial balance would be $110, and you should not need to do anything extra to have the bonus 10% applied.

              • +1

                @WookieMonster: @WookieMonster
                such a legend!

Thanks for the kindness and will let you know what happen tomorrow!
Really hope everything you do goes well really!
                Sincerely

      • +2

Awesome, I wanted the Ultimate Home one can I can use it at JBHiFi. Thanks again!

        • +2

BIG W should also have Ultimate Him gift cards in the $100 denomination, so that should be another option for you for JB Hi-Fi, especially if you are not interested in The Good Guys and Officeworks.

      • @WookieMonster
Just curiosity you recommended Ultimate Home for office works
but I can buy ultimate kids , everyone and teens and student right?

        • +1

Yes, you can purchase them too and redeem them at Officeworks (and I have redeem all of them instore at Officeworks in the past).

However, when I last checked BIG W on the weekend, I could only find them in the following denominations:

          • Kids: $30, $50
          • Everyone: $50, variable load
          • Teens: $30, $50
          • Students: $30, $50

You said you were looking for $100 gift cards, which is why I only mentioned the Ultimate Home gift card (which should be available at BIG W in $50, $100 and variable load).

          • +1

            thanks verymuch!!

  • Why is this deal not as popular as the bonus $10 gift card at Card.Gift https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/765290 ? That one seems like you can only purchase one gift card but this one is up to 10. Is it something to do with the vendors that you can redeem the cards at?

    • +1

Is it something to do with the vendors that you can redeem the cards at?

      Yes.

None of the gift cards in this deal can be directly redeemed at Amazon, Coles, Woolworths, BIG W, Kmart, eBay, Target or Myer (just to name a new few).

The Card.Gift deal also covered the TCN Grocery gift card, which is a prepaid Mastercard gift card that can be redeemed at merchants using grocery-related merchant category codes (e.g. Coles, Woolworths, IGA, ALDI, Superbarn, Drakes, Woolworths Group gift card portal). None of the gift cards in this deal can do that.

      • +1

Thanks for the detailed response! My assumptions were correct :)

        • +1

          No worries! Btw…

That one seems like you can only purchase one gift card but this one is up to 10.

You can purchase up to 10 gift cards in one transaction in this deal, but there is no actual overall limit for this promotion, so if the BIG W you go to has hundreds of Ultimate gift cards, you could theoretically buy them all.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: i actually had store manager come out and stopped me from purchasing anymore of the ultimate cards mid transcation saying its 10 per customer after buying 20+ cards.

phoned the Call centre they said its technically 10 per customer limit for promotional cards, and non promotional cards have different limits.

  • +1

    Hold for 15% off

    • One in the hand is better than two in the bush. As much as I'd love 15% off, they don't come around often enough, so 10% will have to do for now.

  • +2

I went and bought 13 Ultimate Home voucher from BigW, had a nice long chat with the cashier as you processed my order (can only do 5 per transaction). Then I spent about 5 mins in the car park of JBHIFI removing the gift cards and scratching off the back of the card to reveal the PIN.

The JBHIFI staff were super helpful, I think she told me the record for processing gift cards was 100 x $20 that she'd seen. She said the receipt was gigantic lol Anyways, I saved 10% on my iPhone 14 plus I get 10% back from GST as I am traveling overseas next week. Pretty happy with my purchase but I missed out on the 10% they had off iPhone 14 last week for the base model…. Ah well, can't win them all.

    • Just remember the TRS is meant for products going overseas and not coming back to Australia, if you bring it back you must declare it and pay the GST again since the iPhone costs more than $900 which is what you are allowed to bring in tax free.

      • Ah damn, last iPhone I bought was less than that…Forgot about that $900 limit.

        • yup. i forgot about that so i didn't end up claiming. i heard that they are pretty strict these days and might even mark it on your way out with the passport number and check with u on the way in. don't quote me on this, u might be able to do family combine limit if u aren't traveling alone.

      • Really? What about laptop like Macbook?

        • same rule.

  • Hi All, Anyone knows if I can use my current Big W gift cards to buy these gift cards from Big W? Thx

    • +1

I am also looking at using some existing BigW gift cards that I've got. I might go instore later tomorrow to test it out but hoping someone can share their experience prior to that.

    • Doubt it.

This is my experience over the last few years:

      • If you select Gift Card as a payment method at a self-service checkout and then you scan, swipe or enter a gift card, an Item Not Allowed error message will pop up on the EFTPOS terminal. A staff member will need to clear the error message before you can attempt to use another payment method.

      • If you go to a standard checkout and ask to pay using a Gift Card, you'll either be told “no” by the checkout operator, or the checkout operator will let you try and you'll get the same error message as the one you get at self-service checkouts.

      • If you try to use Everyday Pay as a payment method for purchasing any gift cards at Woolworths or BIG W, you will get an Item Not Allowed error and you should be sent back to the regular payment screen. This is because Everyday Pay cannot be used to purchase any gift cards under any circumstances, even if there are no gift cards issued by Woolworths Group (e.g. Woolworths, BIG W, WISH) added to the Everyday Pay wallet. I have tried this twice within the last year; the first time, I actually caused the entire checkout to freeze for about three minutes before a staff member intervened to reboot the checkout. The second time, I got the error message mentioned earlier.

There is no harm in trying, especially if someone random unrelated change to BIG W’s payment system has recently caused it to accidentally work. I mean, if it turns out that the payment method will automatically block you, the worst thing that would probably happen is that you would get a lecture from the staff member about how you cannot use gift cards to purchase gift cards.

  • Worked a treat, got 15 easy.

    • What worked, did you manage to use big W gift card to purchase one of these? If yes, then can you share the method you used? Thanks

      • Sorry to get your hopes up mate. Just bought them regularly.

    • after some help, you have to do set expiry date to December 2029. It says this absolutely nowhere on the card or any online help.

Really? That is news to me.

If you go to the FAQ right now and look at this FAQ, it includes the follwing information…

Can Ultimate Gift Cards be used to make purchases online?

For physical cards, your online shopping expiry date is 12/2029.

When you make purchases online, please enter the expiry 12/2029 during the checkout section. Please note the expiry you enter for online purchases is different to your value expiry. You gift card will expire three (3) years from the date of issue.

This is also hinted at when you go to the How to use your Ultimate Gift Card page and look at the instructions for adding a physical gift card to a mobile wallet.

This information was also on the website since the early days of the Visa version of the Ultimate gift cards. For example, the Wayback Machine shows that the very first question on the FAQ page in December 2021 in regards to the expiry date for online shopping (which would be the same for adding to a mobile wallet).

Tried thousands of different places and methods

What are the thousands of different places and methods?

I think the Ultimate Eats gift card (the Visa version) has only ever listed Subway, Deliveroo (RIP), Menulog and Crust as accepting Ultimate gift cards online (and this is supported by the Wayback Machine). If you were trying to redeem an Ultimate Eats gift card on the Nando's app (as an example), it was never supposed to work.

There have been known issues with redeeming Ultimate gift cards on Deliveroo and Menulog, and I would blame the merchants for not working with their payment processors to ensure Ultimate gift cards worked seemlessly on their website. At the end of the day, Ultimate gift cards are really just merchant-restricted prepaid Visa gift cards, and prepaid Visa gift cards usually get flagged for being riskier payment methods than a debit/credit card with support for 3-D Secure… and I would also blame Blackhawk Network for not making sure Ultimate gift cards were working as intended.

I'm not disputing the fact that you've had issues redeeming Ultimate gift cards (which is unfortunately a known issue that crops up a bit), I'm just disputing some of the information you have written in your comment.

  • Very rare to use gift card. I assume that I just need to grab few gift cards then pay in the register. There is no activation required. Is that correct? I need something in jb hifi. For example, I purchase two $100 cards and I pay $200 and get $220 value.

    Thanks

      Yes

There is no activation required. Is that correct?

Activation is required, but as soon as you finalise payment at the checkout, it will contact a server to see whether the gift card's sale is approved.

      • If it is approved, the gift card will be automatically activated by the gift card issuer. There is nothing you need to do at this point except wait for the gift card to be activated. For Ultimate gift cards, activation typically happens within seconds of the sale being approved, so thankfully you will probably not need to wait for too long before you can use it at JB Hi-Fi. Make sure to check the small receipt printed out by the checkout to see whether it says SUCCESSFUL towards the bottom. If so, you should be all good.

      • If it is not approved, there should be an alert on the checkout that a staff member will need to take the gift cards and the receipt from you and will need to sort the issue. This is extremely unusual, so do not be surprised if staff seem confused as to what is supposed to happen next. (Staff are supposed to refund the purchase of the gift cards and then reattempt its purchase.)

Makes sense to me. Fingers cross you can actually find $100 denominations in stock at the BIG W store(s) you visit!

Thank you so much. I will give a try. Hope not too difficult. :) I double checked. Myer has been excluded. It will be even better to include it as Myer has sales now.

        • +1

          No worries.

Just be mindful of the limitations with redeeming Ultimate gift cards at JB Hi-Fi. Have a look at this FAQ if you have not already done so.

Also, keep in mind that the $100 denomination of Ultimate gift cards redeemable at JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys or Officeworks are usually the first to go during these kinds of deals, so you may need to resort to purchasing the $50 denomination or even the $30 denomination… or trying your luck at another BIG W store (if possible).

Myer has been excluded. It will be even better to include it as Myer has sales now.

If you have not do so already, check out this Prezzee deal, which allows you to purchase a $150 Prezzee gift card and receive a $10 bonus Prezzee gift card (and both Prezzee gift cards are exchangable for digital Myer gift cards).

I've just purchased 2x $50 at BigW and can confirm 10% bonus was loaded on the gift card. Staff weren't sure at the time of checkout as the 10% does not show at the till, however they managed to check the value after I made purchase which showed $55 (per card).

Staff did advise it was only for the $30 & $50 cards (as per catalogue), so I wasn't sure about the $100 gift cards, however some here have already advised the $100 gift card works

I've used it a JB HiFi and made a purchase for a total of $110, worked fine.

Thanks OP. Got 10 x $100 cards. Checked one $100 card after 5 minutes of purchase and the balance is $110

Thanks OP. Pretty easy process and purchased something in JB hi-fi. I am thinking if anyone could buy couple of thousand of gift card as it can use for buying all electronic goods such as TV, Phones….

I am thinking if anyone could buy couple of thousand of gift card as it can use for buying all electronic goods such as TV, Phones….

It is definitely feasible… assuming you can find gift cards in stock.

One of the commenters in this deal previously mentioned they purchased $12,000 worth of TCN gift cards from Coles in one day when Coles was selling some of the TCN gift cards redeemable at JB Hi-Fi at a 10% discount last year.

Not naming names though (and no, it’s not me… I have not bought a single Ultimate gift card through this deal and do not intend to buy any).

Can I use gift cards to buy gift cards? Rolling gift cards like a snow ball…

  • How many gift card in officework, can we use in one go?

As JBHifi has more than 15, so is it same?
    Thanks

  • Any issues with invoice for purchase with GCs when using TRS?

Thinking of experiencing Nintendo / Zelda during my next overseas trip and getting the new OLED TOTK + 3 Zelda games, Metroid prime, 8bitdo ultimate controller and TOTK carrying case.
