RM850e is discounted to $139.4 . Supposedly low-noise variant but reviews are claiming its noisy because of the rifle bearing used in the fan

Also uses Taiwanese capacitors rather than Japanese if that makes a difference. The fan is also smaller. If there is anything you shouldn't skimp on it's the power supply. Good ones last 10 years plus so should last multiple builds.

      • Mine is coming up in 12 years old at the moment. An old Antec Quattro 850W. Would it be best to replace it ahead of time so it doesn't take the rest of my rig down with it? I'm not sure if they silently fail or start breaking equipment downstream.

        • 12 years is getting on for a PSU. If it goes bang and lets out the magic smoke it's quite possible it is going to take other stuff with it.

Depends how much you value the rest of your PC I guess.

@gibbo_au: Eh unlikely, I haven't seen a PSU kill anything in a long time. I'd clean it but keep using it until it starts to cause issues.

Even budget ones last 10 years plus, I am using a $80 thermaltake that I've had since 2005, still works

        • How many watts is it? If it's a more powerful one I'd want it to be better quality. If you're driving a card that's $2000 I would want to be spending a bit more on my PSU.

      • Thats the "swift"

    • dont forget the triangles

    • If you have the budget, go for the RM850x. If you had to cut some costs down and was considering the cheaper RM850, then the RM850e is the current version of that.
