WD TV Live Hub 1TB - $129 Pick up in Store Only

750

First time poster … Long time bargainer

Hopefully this is a bargain for alot of people :)

You are looking at $130 - $140 for just the WD TV Live Streaming
This has the added bonus of a 1TB drive included inside the unit as well.

Stock might be low so you might need to call before going to pick one up, I was lucky enough to pick up this beauty at my local DSE in Campbelltown NSW

I have sent my brother to a local Officeworks close to him to see if they will price match

I don't see why they wouldn't as it is a advertised price according to the price match policy
I will post up a receipt if i hear good news from him.

With my maths looks around $122.55 with price match at Officeworks

Comparative price from Officeworks

Enjoy :)

it's showing 'out of stock' everywhere i've searched…

    • just checked in stock (low stock) in multiple stores in metro WA, and available for click and collect

      • -2

        It's a long walk to WA…

        • +3

Might be for you, not so for others…

        • at least you wont have to pay for fuel or shipping.

  • Beenleigh QLD says low stock.

  • Great price, I would order it if I have not already got Live non-hub version.

  • +3

Be aware the WD TV Live Streaming unit has built-in Wi-Fi, while this unit does not….
    Regards,
    Roberta

    • Wifi is less necessary with 1TB of storage .. though you will either need to copy media via it's usb to the drive or over the network from a share to the local drive. (you can play over the network as well if you like)

      • you can get wifi dongles if thats what you need

    • +1

Correct, but i've always run my wd tv live's over EOP if i couldn't run ethernet cables easily

      wifi at 1080p shudder

but here is a list of compatible devices

      http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3805/~/list-…

      • +1

actually, that depends on your wifi setup. It won't shutter if you use a good external wifi adapter and a powerful enough router. I regularly stream 1080p 10GB+ mkv files without a problem. Even 20GB files work pretty much flawlessly.

        • Hmmm using a 7800N at home to serve my needs … I woulda thought it plenty

Maybe some new antennas … something to ponder

        • +1

Agreed 1080p will run fine on wifi… depends on your setup and so forth.

          My Fritz!box 7390 provides 10MB/s on both 2.4 and 5ghz bands. Assuming a "blu-ray" is 25GB spread over 2 hours - that's 3.5MB/s (on average).

Most of these DLNA type devices do some buffering too at the start and will buffer ahead somewhat so any jitter is no longer an issue.

The solution for the WDTV live is to use Serviio which is a DLNA media server rather than network shares.

I'd really love a WDTV live with 5ghz support. I use the Netgear WNCE-3001 which is a wireless bridge (connects via Ethernet to the WDTV Live).

It's also possible that wireless is currently faster than EOP. 802.11ac is also on the way, albeit 5-7 years away.

        • x

        • 802.11ac is already available, albeit in a limited number of devices. Netgear have a router available with a 1Gbit/s wireless speed rating.

        • I'm pretty sure that it's two seperate 600mbps channels, rather than one gigabit channel, I'd be happy for someone to prove me wrong but true gigabit lan 802.11ac isn't here yet 2015 is projected date.

      • 1080P over wifi is fine, i use a 7800N and also a billion adapter for my live,.. plays fine, only 1 movie in 1 scene never played 100% its was a massive high bit rate,. im not sure if its cpu or net work bottle neck.. but in pandorum where they are watching the probe landing on titus where its going a mile a minute glitches sometimes, nothing else has though, even full blu rays, and this problem one was a rip, i suspect it was the encoding spike…

Ok just heard from my brother who went to Officeworks
    They price matched the $129

Worked out to be as i said $122.55 :)

Apparently they said that the price was too low but honored the price anyway

    Do people need the reciept?
I can try and ask him to send to me to upload

    • +1

I price matched a router yesterday, got it for $136.80 from OW, they advertise it for $236.
Did not ask for proof of price or stock from other store.

  • Does this have the same software as the streamer? I was going to get another streamer but would get this if I can set it up for unblock-us in the same way…

  • +2

These ones have the conieva (I think thats how its spelt) copyprotection on them

    • I think you can use any other DNLA application Samsung Allshare is free but crap the Conieva Mezzmo was better but costs $

    • +2

I've never had any issues with my 2-year old WDTV Live. Will I with this (Live Hub 1TB)?

      • +1

the old version didn't have the copy protection

    • Edit: double-comment.

    • +1
      • Thanks, I always spell it wrong

    • It's the Cinavia copy protection system. It blocks BluRay movies.

  • I have 2 TB streaming over wifi on my network, any point in getting one of these?
trying to convince myself i don't need one

    • More convenient having everything all in one place and not needing to stream. Wireless is unstable.

  • whats this like to stream BD isos?

    • +2

Dick Smith could have implemented a similar scheme. As it is, I can't imagine their issues have all that much to do with Office Works 5% policy. Funny you mention Coles and Woolworths when Woolworths own DSE.

      • -6

I didn't suggest that Officeworks killed DSE but the 5% thing is sure helping to do that. The OP posted a good deal but then ruined it by immediately suggesting to ignore it and head to Officeworks for a price match. Officeworks price was much higher and the only reason they lowered it was to stiffle the competitor.

        • +1

It was never my intention to railroad anyone.

If you read my post, i had purchased it from my DSE in Campbelltown. So effectively they got my money there.

When i spoke to my brother, he said he would like one as well. Using my brain and knowing that A. Officeworks stocked this item and B. They had a price match policy … I sent him off on his way to see if he could get one as there were no more units at our local DSE.

What i don't understand is DSE set the benchmark here for the sale of the unit, i picked it up there, if there was one more unit i would have picked it up to.
The odd $6 saving would mean nothing to me. Saving $100+ dollars on the item was the intention.

Im sure any bargain hunter would have opened up eBay, any price checking site to check this was a bargain before handing there money over

        • Thats one way to look at it. The other is that Officeworks has an in store policy that provides a positive outcome to buyers. If DSE had a similar 'customer centric' policy, then people would go to them too. Instead, this year Dick Smith made the headlines for having a huge sale where much of the desirable stock was put aside by staff before the doors opened. Certainly Dick Smith and other retailers could learn from these sorts of situations.

Also, in the end of the day 5% usually doesn't equate to much. I realise some people here will see it differently, but generally it isn't enough to motivate me to go to Office Works unless the original retailer is out of stock anyway, Officeworks is closer or the price is especially high.

Still, I'm not sure why most stores don't advertise such a policy. Generally, the competitors price will be reasonable as they want to make money on the sale also, and if you were to haggle with the sales person I'd consider 5% fairly easy to get off usually anyway. Put a 'must be in stock at the competing retailer' and 'no rainchecks' catch like many do and you probably protect yourself from too many cases such as the above occurring.

        • Officeworks price was much higher and the only reason they lowered it was to stiffle the competitor.

They're entitled to do that. That's just being competitive. Others can do the same.

        • The only reason I use Officeworks is not just for price mathch but alos convenience. Being 7 minutes from my place as opposed to DSE which is 30 mins further away.

        • Officeworks price was much higher and the only reason they lowered it was to stiffle the competitor.

that's called predatory pricing and if you believe the ACCC it's not allowed, not that they can do much about it!
i don't see this being a big issue with OW since they regularly check competitor prices and drop prices to the same level to avoid the additional 5% discount

        • Wouldn't it also be predatory pricing for DSE to undercut OW by that much in the first place? It takes two to tango.

Why would it be OK for a competitor to undercut but not OK for OW to undercut the competitor?

        • predatory pricing only counts when there is evidence you are trying to drive out a competitor or prevent new competitors from being successful.

DSE and OW have huge amounts of money behind them so its not an issue.

    • +6

You have a problem with a market economy working effectively under current regulation, yet you are a member of OzBargain.

I wish you good luck in life kind sir.

      • -7

You don't see where all this is heading? Officeworks didn't give the best deal willingly, they use it as a strategy to restrict competition. When the competitors are gone, so are the price-matches. Perhaps time to get the other lense and make regular glasses so that you can see this more clearly.

  • at The Goodguys it's $149 pay less pay cash - you prob. could get it down to match your price.

    • +1

Can't find it on the GG website they only have the normal one for $134

  • Went to officeworks at Blacktown and the guy wouldn't pricematch until he called the store in the morning to confirm it is a sale item. Apparently if it is a clearence item they can not price match because they don't price match clearence items and there was a bit of a price difference.

    • +1

OW @ castle hill matched the price. I had to wait 20m but was worth. Thanks Noonoo

      • You're welcome :)

    • +3

That sucks, I work at Officeworks and I price matched 2 of these last night. I price match anything so long as you can show me the item in a catalogue or website.

      • I wish you worked at my local officeworks. the two times I have tried there, they have pulled every dodgy excuse under the sun to get out of price matching. So in the end I bought from the original advertiser of the lower price each time (which took longer, since they had to ship them to me as they didn't have a local shopfront). And now I don't bother trying, and instead will just return to those original stores since they had much better service and pricing!

        • +1

they have pulled every dodgy excuse under the sun to get out of price matching

The only time they refused a price match for me, i emailed head office.

Next day, the store manager called me, apologised for the staff member not giving me a price match, and said if i wanted to, i could come in and get the item for free

Have never had a problem getting a price match any other time…

  • So if I have a movie on my computer which is connected to my network and I then have one of these WD 1TB I can send the movie to the WD 1TB which would be connected to my network to via Ethernet? Or do I need to do it via USB?

Also if I have a external hard drive connected to this WD for extra storage can I send movies to that drive via Ethernet or will I need to unplug the external hard drive and put the movie in it via USB from computer?

    • +1

      1) Yes.
      2) not sure about to the external USB .. sounds like something to ask on the user forums
      http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Hub-General/bd-p/wdtv…

I've a WD Elements 2TB plugged into it and I can transfer files over the network. The 1TB internal displays as WDTVLive and the other as Elements in the browser, nice and simple.
It's not a bad device, the firmware has improved but it's slow to browse files and crashes sometimes. Though it's not crashed during playing a file. Also the power button does not switch it off, I have to unplug the power cord from out the back of it. Good buy at this price.

    • So if I have a movie on my computer which is connected to my network and I then have one of these WD 1TB I can send the movie to the WD 1TB which would be connected to my network to via Ethernet? Or do I need to do it via USB?

Either works, but Ethernet is better. If it's connected to the network, you can from the source computer see it as a network drive (Z: by default) and drag and drop your files into it. If you use USB, the copying has to be done on the WDTV's end, with your remote connected to the TV.

Also if I have a external hard drive connected to this WD for extra storage can I send movies to that drive via Ethernet or will I need to unplug the external hard drive and put the movie in it via USB from computer?

Yes, it has two USB inputs.

Just got mine at OfficeWorks Subiaco. Took lots of convincing that Dicksmith in Phoenix and Carousel had stock. Got it for $122.50.
I would have gotten it from DSE but none of the stores near me had them and were open.
This price is super low. Could easily sell it for a $60 profit… But will give it to the folks as a gift!

Thanks for the headship on the deal!

    • Stock level at the subi OW please? Thanks! Does it support USB 3.0 or 2.0 only?

      • They should have 1 left

  • +2

got last one at oxley officejerks some random ozb dude in front of me as well

  • Awesome deal considering that, not long ago, I got the non-HDD WD TV Live for only $30 less!

  • +2

Kinda happy no stock from DSE stores near me. The price sounds tempting, but the box has been around for quite some time, and not without its issues (according to some reviews on Amazon - after weeding the more unreasonable ones). I do like how it can stream to DLNA devices however.

  • That's a nice and cheap price. I bought the WDTV Live Hub when it was released for $250+ and it used to cause me some problems, especially when streaming through network shares. Thankfully WD upgrade their firmware fairly frequently and it has finally become a solid media player.

  • As Consumer Sheep mentioned this does not turn off unless unplugged, the fan keeps spinning under the unit and my external hard drive has led light always on. Is this a concern 24/7 electricity wise? The original WDTV would always remain warm and the WDTV Live a little less warm when plugged in. What a nusance!

I recommend firmware update as it was a major version number jump.
I have not examined changelogs and cannot comment on stability, functionality etc

  • +1

These are very good. And the price is barely more than the HDD inside alone.

My only complaint is that the drive is slow. I transfer onto it at 14MB/s, but transfers away from the device are only 7MB/s. That is very slow for a HDD. It's probably 5400 RPM. But the fact that its read speed is slower than its write speed is strange.

Actually I do have a second complaint: There's no built in wifi. You have to use a dongle if you want wifi, but the caveat is that the dongles that are compatible with it are very limited. They are all old revisions. WD doesn't update it as other wifi adapters get released to support them. I have not been able to find any wifi adapters on the shelf that are compatible with it.

So if you're buying it needing wifi streaming, don't buy it.

No stock available, can change to expired.

    • No stock available in your search does NOT mean no stock available. I can see at least five stores with low stock.

      • Which stores are they ?

  • +1

Quick search for Sydney area show Low Stock for:

    Bankstown Square
    Carlingford
    Liverpool
    Mt Druitt
    Miranda
    Parramatta
    Roselands
    Sydney (George Street)
    Warringah Mall
    Windsor

Low stock for other areas as well. So definitely still available.

    • I just got the one at Windsor, no more there.

  • Newcastle and maitland areas?

  • Does this support .mkv - and files > 1GB?

I have an old (2+ years) WDTV that does not support either of these

    • I'm pretty sure the old WDTV's are meant to support these.

Just make sure they don't have header compression enabled, you need to remove it first.

    • My original WDTV Live handles 5GB mkv's fine over a wired 100MBit network from a NAS

  • Canberra Centre had full stock. I reserved 1 online last night. Today morning I got call & said they didn't have stock!!!!

    • Not surprised when DSE allows staff to reserve stocks for themselves. The stock level in the system doesn't always reflect the stock level in store so good luck for those click and collect. You are lucky they at least called you save your time and fuel traveling there my experience is I drove 30 mins there and they told me couldn't find any stock left even there are 2 left in their system.

      • They cannot and will not take a customers stock. If it is reserved for the customer it belongs to the customer. Simple as that.

  • VIC showing low stock in Dandenong

    • None left at Dandenong. Went across the street to Officeworks - they wouldn't price match…

  • Does anyone else sell this unit for a low price? Someone mention Goodguys but I couldnt see anything

    • Online? I don't think there would be anything close to it unforunately unless your willing to buy overseas , have it shipped and buy and= adapter for the power plug.

From what i have seen there are a few retailers that might have them in store like Harvey's, Bing Lee and/ or Good Guys. Your best best maybe to give them a call and see how low they are willing to go on price. I'm not sure on there price match policy on any of those stores though

Nice, thnx for posting, got one from OW, to the guy who said something about cinivia protection, no this dosent have it, it plays everything ive thrown at it with out that ciniva protection shit that my ps3 has.

  • Just bought a unit for $122.50 from Officeworks in Bendigo, Victoria. The sticking point was that there had to be stock in a Dick Smith store. Using the Check Stock button on the Dick Smith website, found stock in one shop in Queensland, postcode 4361. Almost all other stores indicated that they had no stock. I suspect that you'll need to be quick to get one. (The Officeworks price was $315.00.)

  • +2

I just got back from Officeworks trying to obtain a price match. It took me 1.5hours in the store and had to get it escalated to the manager before they would finally price match it.

I found a few stores in NSW which had one in stock and the OW store was making every excuse under the sun to not give me the price match.

It was frustrating to say the least.

    • +2

Thats a shame it took so long
Good on you for sticking to your guns!

      Enjoy the WD

      • thanks mate. great find btw!

I've shot out a complaint email to OW

  • Anyone know if you can watch abc iview, sbs ondemand, plus7 and 9 catchup on these? (through Ethernet connection)

Update: It seems an update in June means it now has iview. Other catchup services, not sure, seems unlikely?

  • I bought one a while ago. It cant always play DTS on mkv file depending how its encoded.
Copying via ethernet or usb to the harddisk is ridiculously slow.
You can google both these problems

  • Any stores in Victoria that are still in stock?
