No microSD card on these so $90 more to double storage is worth it.

    Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 256GB $989 / 512GB $1109

    • Though if you have a 5G phone you may as well enjoy the ability to offload apps and files and redownload them on demand.

Are the screens still lifting on these things?

    • +5

it can do a mean curl

      #doyouevenlift

      • Hahaha brilliant.

    • +2

the built-in plastic screen protector is still prone to lifting off

      • Oh, so it's the screen protector, not the screen itself.

        • +1

comes attached from factory so feels bad

the screen protector after 6 month scratches itself and lifts and you need to get it replaced every 6 months, dont worry the first 2 in the first 2 years are free then you need to pay $66 to repair it every 6 months. Flip 3 users got even further screwed since it was one repair in the first year. As a flip 3 user, the support was awful and it feels against the law to charge $66 for a design fault on a proprietary screen protector (you can only get it done at certified samsung repair shops since they have a special machine that does it).

This has greatly irk'd me and I hate samsung for it, the flip is a great phone though

It is not a proprietary screen protector. You can buy it on Amazon and replace it at home.

        • I appreciate this and the links, I hadn't looked too far into it because I read alot about how troublesome 3rd party screen protectors were (not the smoothest install and best quality) but I will definitely give it a go next time my flip decides it needs a new screen protector. I also read here https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/galaxy-z-fold-z-flip/res… that someone was denied a repair because they removed the screen protector? That is eu though and I didn't get very far, just that it doesn't actually void any warranty which is good.

          • +2

@fAffY: If you scroll down and read the followup comment by that poster, he says that it was his telco that denied the repair. He then brought the phone in to a Samsung store and they gave him a full refund as they weren't able to repair the power problem. They also confirmed that removing the screen protector does not void the warranty but can affect screen damage claims.

Samsung actually publishes official instructions on how to remove the screen protector.

Never had a problem with my Flip3 .. probably the user-error

    • +1

Are the screens still lifting on these things?

It's the screen protector that was lifting. Samsung specifically mentioned using a stronger adhesive in the 4th generation to avoid that problem.

In any case, you get 3 free screen protector replacements while it's within the 2-year warranty period.

      • +3

I cannot imagine buying a phone where having to send it away (if you don't live near a service centre) several times during its lifetime is part of the anticipated experience. Crazy.

        • -2

That's why they specifically addressed the problem in this generation by using a stronger adhesive.

          • +2

@eug: yeah i mean hopefully they fixed it somewhat but I did straight up have a samsung rep at a store tell me it was mostly the same stuff with the flip 4

    • +3

Been using my Flip 3 for 2 years without issues. Replaced screen protector with a cheap hydrogel one ($1.25) a year later and it works like a charm. No bubbles at all and sticks really well. Really didn't expect the phone to last this long tbh.

  • +1

I'm hanging out for the flip 5

  • Pixel 7 Pro or this? Not for or against the flip screen thing.

    • +2

That really depends on whether or not you want a compact phone. If you don't mind the size of the Pixel 7 Pro, you might as well get that.

    • +1

If you wanted a normal of the most normal phones then you would get the Pixel 7 and be normal.

    • I have S23U, P7P and previously the Flip3

I would go for the Flip4 as long as you are ok with exellent photos .. not amazing photos like you will get with P7P.

The Flip really is so useful for when using the Flip4 on your desk .. eg watching youtube, video calls.

I really don't understand this form factor. What practical value does it add?

I know someone with one of these, the screen is pretty messed up at the fold.

    • +3

I really don't understand this form factor. What practical value does it add?

If you have large pockets, not much in terms of physical size. If you have smaller or shallow pockets, or carry your phone in a small bag, it will fit more nicely.

It also has a built-in "stand" (flip it halfway) which can be used to take group photos or longer-exposure shots.

It's also an interesting design change after 15 years of the same boring flat slab design.

I know someone with one of these, the screen is pretty messed up at the fold.

The screen protector on the previous Fold 3 is known to peel at the fold. It can be replaced for free.

      • +2

I'm a grumpy old man who does not take well to change for the sake of change.

        • +2

Haha well that's fine, it's nice to have options. I tried a Flip 3 myself and didn't quite like it, I tried a Fold and loved it.

          • -1

@eug: Fold is too bulky for me but I appreciate that it at least adds something.

You need big pockets in more ways than one to own that phone.

    • +1

My 12 yo is very happy with her flip3, enjoying this form factor

      • -1

No disrespect to your 12 Year old but if that's the demographic for which this phone is suited, well, I think that says it all.

    • +1

It doesn't have to have practical value to be valued by its audience.

    • +1

aesthetic, me and my girlfriend walked into jb and she wanted to get it the moment she saw it because of how it looks, she has never used an Android before

  • Why would you buy a phone that needs to be repaired every 6 months?

    • +2

Who said that? My flip3 has been going for over a year absolutely no issues?

    • -1

      Flip3 was perfect .

      Generally user-error causes problems.

    • Because they like the phone?

  • +4

Bought the last version, won't make that flipping mistake again.

  • This form factor is so perfect .. I really miss my Flip3

    1. mega compact and easy to carry

    2. i used the flip all the time when using the phone on my desk at an angle of about 45 degrees, eg video calls, watching youtube.

Just wish the camera was as good as the S23U or P7P.
