Motorola G62 5G (4GB/128GB, SD480, 120hz, Midnight Grey) $249 (RRP $399) + Delivery ($0 C&C/in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

1070

I am not claiming learner status, I should know better, force me to my happy place.
Not the G82 deal for $2 but still reasonable value in the flacid sea of RRP and above 'deals'.
My pos Oppo A52 hmmmm, 'accidently broke' so I am in the market for a bang for buck replacement.

Released Jun 2022, so should get 1.5 to 2.5 years of updates depending Moto's mood.

Full Specs:
https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g62_5g-11602.php

Motorola G62 4gb / 128GB GREY SD480 5G 120Hz
Android 12 (planned 13)
4GB is fine if you don't game, don't have lots of tabs open and don't need to have 100s of aps open at once, which is me.
SD480 (327000) has about 66% more performance than an SD665 (197000) which my Oppo had, ANTUTU9
Only has IPS screen, but it's 120Hz if that makes you fizzy.
Dual Hybrid Sim
3.5mm Jack

Seems to be plenty of stock and only $249 (normally $399) for a useable phone you won't cry when you throw in the trash (I mean recycle responsibly) when the updates stop.

Happy Shopping :-)

Man I thought I got a great deal paying $200 for the G82, but wow $2, dammit I paid 100x that.

  • +5

This is a lot of phone for $250. Good find OP

    • 100%. Looks like a solid phone. Not a bad entry into the 5G world too. Thanks op

  • Is this ok for playing videos downloaded off youtube? Likely 720p or less.

    • +2

Have you never played YouTube 720p on a 4G phone before? This is 5G so it won't be a problem.

      • I’m talking about downloaded videos.

        • +7

This isn’t 2007, media playback will perform perfectly fine, especially at those resolutions.

        • +3

Even low grade socs from 5 years ago wouldn't have an issue playing 720p videos locally.

    • +4

what are you asking here do you expect the video to stutter?

      • Yeh that’s it

        • +1

You sound like you've been badly buffered.

    • +2

      Downloaded… like… offline?

      • Yep exactly

        • +3

Any $60 phone would be able to play 720p videos just fine mate

          • +1

@Toffcuz: That's what I wanna hear. Thanks for that.

        • +5

Sure. It has enough memory and processing power to do it… but if you don't mind me asking… Why so specific? Quite frankly any phone in the last 10 years could easily do that.

EDIT: Any reasonably good phone. Not the really, really budget phones from 10 years ago.

          • +3

@BadGiraffe: Just buying a phone for my son. Don't wanna be spending too much on it, and I have a whole bunch of downloaded videos I want to put in it. I've iPhone every 2 years coz of work, so I don't really know what these cheaper phones are like. Just a simple noob question.

            • +2

@aus36: Fair enough. I apologise on behalf of those that negged your comments since it was a valid (but puzzling) question.

    • +2

If it's downloaded, chances are, you can force the SoC to play it at 4k.

      • +1

Thanks for that. Don’t need it to play 4K.

    • Pricebeat?

      • +5

No pricebeat when price is same.

    • Seems to be different phone?

      Features

      Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G Octa-Core processor

    • Thanks. The single review there mentions bad reception performance indoors. Would be great if someone could confirm

  • Not the G82 deal for $2

I would have bought their entire stock at $2. I guess you meant $200.

  • Can I potentially use this deal to purchase 2 x $100 + 1 x $50 card and use them via JB website to convert into JB gift card to then purchase the phone at a discount of $25 over all after cashback?

  • +2

If the G82 becomes $200 again, I'll bite!

    • Holding out hope for another booboo from an intern and im there buying another.

  • Damn I didn't know the Snap 4 series could push 120hz!

    • Seriously, the GPU on this chip is almost as good as SD 835. That's super impressive for an entry level SoC.

      • +1

I think Nokia use this entry level SoC on their flagship.

        • -1

The lg v30 used the sd 835.

        • Hmd Nokia been playing weird games since their second gen devices lol.

But wow, that does speak volumes about this SoC's performance. Big fan.

  • +4

I guess this will do for my mum, she's still rocking a Microsoft Lumia 620.

    • Wow that was released in 2013!!! The battery must be dead.

      • +20

i assume she has been charging it over that time

        • +2

Reported to the mods for Dad joke.

        • +1

Dammit now you tell me. I just been buying a new phone everytime the battery runs out.

    • +3

@Mechz I'm impressed your mum is still using the Lumia. I had to upgrade from a Lumia 625 to a Motorola as the Lumia had limited apps. It was a great phone and very user friendly

      • Sorry I remember now it's actually a 640. Got it for really cheap as a Telstra pre-paid and used an Aldi sim in it ever since.

She loves it and I think the battery might be ok but calls are starting to sound garbled and drop out.

        • +1

She got her money's worth. Released in 2015

        • +1

          Did the same. Miss it.

  • +1

    How's this compared with the G51 ?

  • Its an OK deal - although supports 5G but only has 4GB ram and no NFC. (has NFC apparently)

3 yrs ago there was already Oppo A52 with 4GB RAM + NFC for $299.

  • +9

Why on earth do these companies bother with making their own random UI? Stick with Android one and call it a day!

    • +1

I guess the same reason Apple makes macOS rather than just Unix - product differentiation

    • +1

My last two phones have been moto, and while I'm unsure what the custom UI elements are, some of the customisations like karate chopping the phone to turn the torch on are incredible. I honestly don't know if I could move to another brand of phone because it would mean losing that.

  • -3

Plastic frame and plastic back. Lord have mercy!

    • +3

Why? For $250 plastic is expected. I have the G82 and its plastic and even a bit nice too, even through the free case they include.

      • -2

All fair points but from my experience please get a hard tpu case for these phones as the included case is not sufficient (not firm and too bendy).
These phones are susceptible to bending and breaking under pressure due to their construction.

        • Why would you bend it?

          • @Wardaddy: Noone would deliberately bend it, but a bend could occur from accidents such as a collision, hard knock, sitting on it etc.
This unfortunately happened to me and from experience if it was properly protected with a hard case or was solidly built like an iPhone / Samsung, it would not bend upon impact. All I advise is getting a hard case (not those soft mushy ones), but sadly I don't see many Mil-Spec protected Motorola phone cases compared to other phones.

    • +4

plastic absorbs impact if dropped, glass back and metal frame don't absorb impact if dropped …..

    • +3

      Less weight, more durable.

      • +1

And better grip as well. Reason why everyone has cases.

      • Durable against drops yes, but against any hard impact no.

I was in an accident and my Motorola Edge 30 bent/cracked at the lower quarter which broke the entire screen of the phone.
All because it has an internal plastic frame and the included rubber case did not help at all, it is too soft and bendy.

My advice is to purchase a solid case for the phone as the included case does not protect against hard impacts which causes bending and ultimately catastrophic failure on these budget phones.

In my experience I would stay away with anything made of plastic frame or cheap aluminum unless you have a proper durable phone case.
Do not rely on the phone case which Motorola provides you.

        • +2

Soft and bendy is actually why it's more durable, cause it absorbs the impact. It's the same reason why toyota cars are plastic and bend easily, but saves your life.

Corners are the weakest part of the phone, and if you drop it there, even metal won't save the screen. Especially if you were in an accident, you think a 2cm thick phone can survive anything like that?

But yes, spigren case is suggested for those scenarios. Which, btw, is also plastic.

    • +3

      Can you share please?

    • +3

Also keen to see what you have in mind.

    • +2

      Like what?

      • +12

        watch spaceninja never come back…

and like that… (waves fingers like a wisp) he's gone

  • -3

Not much of a deal with only 4 GB of ram.

  • +1

The g32 is slightly better. Faster cpu and faster wired charging. 15watt in g62 vs 30watt in g32.

Screen on g62 slight better at 120Hz but the g32 has 90Hz so its not a huge jump.

    • Performance wise, the G62 is significantly better (according to benchmarking, I don't have real-world proof).

      • +1

Real world performance will be like splitting hairs.

I say get whichever is cheapest between the two.

        • G62 is 5G, so there's that.

          Edit:
I have a G32 and the battery lasts
          FOR
          EVER

Seriously, sometimes I only charge it once every three days.
I don't use it a whole lot, but my Zenfone 8 had the same usage and had to be charged every night.

          • @pumpkinspice: FOR EVER = ~3 days 🤔

            • @ballsau: Kinda like a tinder date really.

Their forever is all of 3 days.

  • I recently bought G82 (no not at $200 :() and it's a fantastic phone, certainly a lot better than the POCO phone I had in many ways. I'm never going back to a chinese phone again.

    • +4

      hmm…..

Motorola Mobility LLC, marketed as Motorola, is an American consumer electronics manufacturer primarily producing smartphones and other mobile devices running Android. It is a subsidiary of the Chinese multinational technology company Lenovo.

      • +1

Why you gotta ruin the illusion?

        🤪

      • Doesn't negate the fact that my POCO is a POS of a phone

        • More like a POSO

        • +1

Which one did you have? I really like my X3 GT.

  • +2

I think that many people also didn't realise the snapdragon 480+ SoC included on the phone is actually better than a snapdragon 680 SoC.

  • +2

Just picked one up. Comes with a rear cover. Noice! Thanks OP!

  • what's this phone like outside on a bright day ? I have a g50 and while it's OK indoors, outside I struggle to see the screen even with brightness on full. Wondering if this is a common Motorola trait ?

    • Yeah, 500nits max isn't great considering phones can hit 2000
