Rebate on International ATM Operator Fees until 31 July 2023 for Orange Everyday Accounts (Monthly Criteria Applies) @ ING

21035

ING is NUKING their ATM operator fee rebates on international withdrawals from 1 August 2023. (An Operator Fee is charged by an ATM operator for transaction and enquires made at their ATMs.) As such, can no longer be used to withdraw cash with no operator fee to do things overseas such as buy dishwashers or look at monkey attractions.

Credit to user 'chiwi' who brought this up here and "currentfad" for finding the ToS. Ozbargain now announces this news before ING even announce this date to their own customer service reps or their own customers lol:

If another bank offers this benefit I wont be using ING anymore

      Macquarie

      • +1

Macquarie doesn't rebate operator atm fees though?

ING are still waiving their own fees I'm assuming same as Macquarie

  • +13
    • much like the real world huh

  • +2

Not exactly a deal since they are taking something away

  • +6

This card used to be awesome. In the past I was able to withdrawal cash from overseas ATM's and ING would rebate the ATM fee which sometimes was up to $15.

I went overseas recently and seems like ING charges an international ATM fee of $5, which they rebate, but I didn't get charged at ATM fee. It used to be unlimited withdrawals but now seems to be limited to 5 per month.

The only good thing about ING now seems to be that they have the highest interest on any savings account.

If they're going to get rid of this rebate then I'm going to have to find a new card to withdrawal cash from overseas ATM's. Anyone got any ideas?

    • +3

It's highest as long as you jump the hoops and grow your balance compared to last month. So in the month where you take some money out for e.g. paying tuition or Rego/CTP, you lose the whole interest for that month.

      • Only if your balance at the end of the month is not more that at the end of the previous month; meaning you can make withdrawals as long as you put at least one cent more back than you had.

        • that I don't quite get. I tried to do the thing where you take money out at the end of the month (mostly just the interest earned from the previous couple of months) thinking i'll lose a day of interest but it looks like it's affected the entirety of the following month

          • +1

@phxsun: It does, your closing balance at month end needs to be more than the previous months closing balance; you can do what you like in between. I wasn't aware of this until I accidently made a few payments out of this account and when I realised I transferred money back plus 10 cents and I did get my extra interest. I forgot one month to add extra money and that cost me like $300, I was so miffed at myself.

            • @robbyjones: So essentially if I had $50k, I just need to make sure I have $50,001 to at the end of the month

              • @phxsun: Yep, simples!

              • +1

@phxsun: yes, except only need be $50000.01

              • +1

@phxsun: there is a tab in the app that clearly says how much needs to be in the account by the end of the month (down to the exact cent), so there is no confusion

    • Yeah I remember being able to withdraw overseas and getting your rebate in real time and without needing to jump through hoops.

  • God damn, I'm overseas and I left my ING card at home :( Costing me like $10 per withdrawal in Thailand and 2.5% per withdrawal in Vietnam!

    • Is HSBC in Thailand free for HSBC customers?

      • Not sure about HSBC but I managed to withdraw money for free with my CitiBank card at CitiBank ATMs.

        • +1

Interesting ING can go f right off

          https://www.hsbc.com.au/accounts/products/everyday-global/

          1. Non-HSBC branded ATMs and HSBC Group ATMs in Argentina, France, Greece, Malta, Mexico and Turkey may charge an ATM operator fee for withdrawals or balance enquiries at their ATMs.

So at least for me this is far better than ING + 2% cashback

          • +3

@deme: Yeah but you have to use HSBC's abomination of an app/banking portal

            • +1

@jaypee06: They are not as bad as they used to be but I get their sinful past is hard to forget/forgive.

HSBC withdrew from retail banking in Thailand last year, so I don't think you'll find HSBC ATMs.anywhere in Thailand now.

        • Yes I was under that impression too when i did research a couple months ago.

      • Yeah free for HSBC customers and very competitive rates as well.

      • There's a HSBC branch in District 7.

    • +2

Yep I was in Bangkok last week. Citibank is awesome, if you are staying close to their ATM. Free transaction and great rate! My mates were getting that $10 fee every time they withdrew. Glad I didn't need to worry.

      • +1

Are the citibank ATMs still around at centralworld and interchange 21?

        • +2

Yeah at Centralworld can confirm it's on level 4 and much better rate than Superrich.

        • +2

I can only see 3 in all of thailand?
          https://www.findmyciti.com/th/

        • +2

Yes can confirm I used the one at Interchange 21 last week. UOB is the bank but the ATMs are still Citibank.

          • @gviddy: was it fee free for citibank?

            • +1

@deme: Yes, I used that same UOB bank last week with my Citibank card and it was free withdrawals.

            • @deme: Yes fee free and really good exchange rate.

    • +1

If you are in Vietnam, TPBank, KienLongBank, BaoVietBank, NamABank is free.

      • Eximbank free too and can withdraw 3m at a time

      • Free for all cards or just ING? I will go test my Citibank card now…

        • Free meaning no ATM operator fee.

        • ATM does not charge operator fee, just your bank, so any fee-free card will do.
Tried ING, Macquarie, Up, Citibank and HSBC

          • @KanTakahashi: ING actually charges a $5 fee for using foreign ATM which will use up your 5 free withdrawals even if the foreign ATM itself doesn't charge a fee.. so stupid

      • +1

This should be sticky posted somewhere in Ozbs on fee-free international ATM withdrawal page. I hope this works too for HSBC.

Regardless of this deal, ING needs to be increase their Osko limit from $1,000.

    • So true

    • How do transfer big amount

      • +3

In a large dirty suitcase marked ‘moneh’

    • +1

      Totally agreed.

    • +1

Pretty common among HISA banks (Virgin and BOQ have the same limit). ubank has a much higher limit @ 20k

    • +2

I recently called them about this and they told me it was Osko's limit no theirs. I called their BS and informed them that other banks have much higher limits.

Does contactless payment (e.g. PayPass) using AU credit cards work in Singapore/Malaysia? Has anyone got any experience with them?

    • +1

      yes

    • I've only had issues with one store not working with Garmin Pay attached to an AU card, and that vendor worked fine with the same plastic card.

Be aware that the public transport card can't be topped up at terminals with international cards though, you'll need cash or to work out the online portal. UOB ATMs had free withdrawals for Up last time I was there, not sure if it's a partnership with Adelaide/Bendigo or if that's just them.

(for Singapore, not sure about mainland Malaysia)

      • Why would you want to top up the transport card when you can just tap your credit card?

        • I realised you could a bit late (coming from a state that doesn't have credit card support on PT yet…), and I seem to recall warnings about minimum charges or surcharges for international cards. Happy to be wrong.

      • Are you saying that Garmin pay actually works with ING now?

        • I'm not saying that. The question I replied to was about AU cards in general, and Garmin Pay works for my cards, which are a subset of AU cards. To your indirect question, I haven't tried to link ING with Gamin Pay in quite a number of years.

    • Yes, was just there last month. Worked wonderfully for public transport as well.

    • yes, at most stores.
but check with the store before you buy as some of the smaller ones don't accept mastercard / visa payments (they use netspay / grabpay etc).

  • Thoughts on using ING vs Ubank card when travelling overseas?

    • +3

The trap with ING is you have to deposit $1000 and 5 transaction in order to qualify for the benefit the months AFTER which I find is very annoying.

    • Use a credit card wherever possible for payments, not a debit card - so when your card inevitably gets compromised one day, it's the bank's money that gets taken, not yours !

But you can't use a credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM without large fees - this is what you need a debit card for.

  • +7

I guess there's no point in keeping my ING card anymore. Only reason was for the 5x international ATM operator fee rebate each month.

    • But didn't you also have to jump through hoops the month prior?

      • 2 hoops. Easy to achieve.

        • Especially if it's your main bank. I just use apple pay at woolies and add a bit to my savings per pay and that all counts. Given that they had all these other benefits and one of the highest savings rates etc, it made sense to use them as the primary bank account.

      • Yes, still had to jump through the hoops. I do 5 small transactions at Woolies/Coles if I know I will be overseas next month. Otherwise I don't bother with the bonus interest as salary gets transferred out to an offset with another bank.

        • So do many other people and ING have figured out they are losing money.

    • +1

      Don't forget the $100 a year in 1% off utilities! lol /s

  • +4

Not surprised they are getting rid of this, I got reimbursed 500 bucks when I was backpacking. I could easily have cost them thousands if I just took a few bucks out at a time
Are there any banks that still offer this?

    • Well, they already put a cap on it. Nuking it entirely is quite a bigger step.

  • +3

I literally just opened an ING account last month purely for this. FFS.
    Back to Citibank I go

    • Does Citibank offer the same as ING? What account do I need to open?

    • Following, I have a Citi premiere card. Typo.

    • Sad :(

  • Looks like international transaction fees are going as well, time to go elsewhere.

  • +2

Gosh, ok I'm probably only 50:50 to stay with them now

  • +4

Between Mrs and I we have 2 savings maximisers, 2 orange everyday and a joint home loan (paying them 6.3% currently) Can’t wait to close them all in august and sight this as the reason!

    • +1

Why on earth are you in paying them 6.3%??? Call them up today and get them to change it to a low 5.

  • +6

I will probably be leaving them after Aug-2023. So many cards out there with no fee international transactions without the hoops. No point of remaining with ING.

    • +1

Which ones? My macquarie and ubank cards have no international transaction fees on purchases, but it's the ATM withdrawal while overseas that ING was good for because it was free. Well, they charged you the ATM and international withdrawal fee but then gave you a rebate for up to 5 withdrawals per month.

      • yeah I am referring to the no fee international transactions. ING differentiated with International ATM withdrawals but no more. 28 Degrees, Bendigo, etc have no fee international transactions without the hoops.

  • +1

Any other bank offer this benefit? ING was the only one to rebate the ATM fee from the foreign bank. Super handy in countries like Thailand and Argentina where the foreign bank fee can be $10-20…

Those saying Macquarie, Ubank they only rebate their own international ATM fee. Which the ING one will still do.

Also, moot point for countries where the foreign bank gives fee free ATM withdrawals (eg. UK)

Citi still good for countries where there is a Citi presence and readily available ATMs…

    • I'm thinking the same.. ING 1 August onward, seem to offer the same benefits as Citi, Macquarie, HSBC (Unless using certain HSBC ATMs). Provided you can easily meet the loop holes of ING then its the same setup.. Is that right? All seem to not rebate the International ATM Fee..

  • So citibank, hsbc and ubank are the better alternatives for this it seems like it.

I checked revolut since I use one for fee-free international transfers and it has a $350 monthly max international ATM withdrawal fee be aware.

  • +2

I’m out dog. Been with them for best part of a decade, but this is the straw that broke the camels back. Got greedy (what’s new), so time for a one man stand.

  • +3

Well looks like my partner and I will be leaving ING if this is the case. ING offers no other benefits and they're shooting themselves in the foot by getting rid of this. Moving our money elsewhere. Hopefully enough people leave and they realize that they dun goofed with this.

  • So ING just pulling plug of the one thing that other banks didn't do anyway, not making them worse but making them the same as other banks, is that correct?

Is there any other banks that will rebate the ATM fee internationally?

    • +9

one thing that other banks didn't do anyway

But ING never had to pay for physical branches or physical ATMs. And they can offshore their customer service.

So ING had a higher profit margin than other banks but now will not share much back with their customers.

    • They'll be worse because you have to jump through some hoops to get the same benefits as some other banks, like fee-free international transactions. They do have the 1% utility rebate though.

      • Higher savings interest rates as well than those competitors, isn't it? If you were to switch your primary bank from ING, who would you switch to? I think it'd depend on some things, like if you had only $5 in savings then the savings interest rate is irrelevant, but likewise if you never go overseas then this change makes no difference.

  • +5

ING is slowly killing their attractive products. Pity.

  • -4

I thought this was OzBargain not OzAnnouncements. This should be in forums.

ING are crap. Every good feature they had has disappeared since I signed up, commbank is better with no fee when my pay goes in

  • That sucks, guess it's a good thing I never closed my Citybank Debit account. Not that I plan on traveling any time soon.

No thanks. Four digits pin for Internet banking in 2023.
