  • anyone can explain to me what does this do? lol (vs the usb hub with hdmi and usb/thunderbolt ports) (not being sarcastic, just wanted to know if I need an upgrade)

    • +1

Faster transfer? but basically nothing else. Looks like USB PD is 60w max as well.

This doesn’t fallback to USB3.2 and probably isn’t compatible with USB4 either. So don't buy it if you plan on using it on AMD platforms in the future.

    • +1

Basically draft USB4 dock that may or may not be compatible with AMD laptops.

USB4 is based on TB3 but does not require backward compatibility.

Hey @csgo6, Yea for sure love to help.

This Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock and a USB hub with HDMI and USB/Thunderbolt ports serve similar purposes. Though there are key differences between the two.

      Data transfer speeds:
Thunderbolt 3 Dock Core: It supports data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, allowing for faster file transfers and more efficient handling of high-resolution media and large files.
USB hub: Typically supports data transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbps for USB 3.0 or 10 Gbps for USB 3.1 (Gen 2) and USB 3.2 (Gen 1x2), which is slower than Thunderbolt 3.

      Display support:
Thunderbolt 3 Dock Core: Can support multiple displays, up to two 4K displays @ 60hz. Also supports a single 5K monitor at 60Hz and capable of reaching 8K 30Hz.
USB hub: Usually supports only one external display via the HDMI port, and might be limited to lower resolutions, depending on the USB standard used.

      Device charging:
Thunderbolt 3 Dock Core: Provides power to connected device like charging your laptop with power delivery (60W recommended) through the USB-C PD port on the Thunderbolt dock.
USB hub: Some USB hubs offer limited charging capabilities, while others may not support charging at all, depending on the specific model and USB standard used.

      Compatibility:
Thunderbolt 3 Dock Core: Primarily compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type-C enabled devices, but not all USB Type-C devices support the full range of Thunderbolt 3 features.
USB hub: Generally compatible with a wider range of devices that support USB connections, but may not support the full range of Thunderbolt 3 features.

      Price:
Thunderbolt 3 Dock Core: Usually more expensive than a USB hub due to the advanced technology and features it provides.
USB hub: Typically more affordable than a Thunderbolt 3 dock but offers fewer features and slower data transfer speeds.

Basically the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Core offers more advanced features, faster data transfer speeds, and better display support than a USB hub with HDMI and USB/Thunderbolt ports. However, it is more expensive. A USB hub can be a more affordable option.

      Thanks,
      Travis

      • Thanks for the detailed info :)

Can you confirm that this will support multiple extended displays on a Mac, and not just mirrored displays?

EDIT: No need to respond. This unit DOES support dual extended displays on Intel Macs, but DOES NOT support dual extended displays on M1 or M2 Macs.
