  • I assume this kind of SFF, couldn't move the motherboard to full tower case, right?

    • +2

Correct also needs that specific dell PSU which sucks

      • Is it easy to get replacement PSU’s if they fail?

        • +1

Official ones are easy to get through dell direct, they're like the server hot swappable grade PSUs long rectangular boxes, and theres also non genuine ones on eBay

    • Usually the motherboards are proprietary, even in their ATX size cases, so your case standoff screws won't align. Prebuilt OEMs also tend to have proprietary power delivery as well.

    • +1

Case swaps are not worth the hassle IMHO. I did it recently with a HP system because I wanted a NAS with ECC but depending on the case you could run into issues of if could just end up cost more that buying a second hand parts.

Why the need for a full tower case?

      • +2

Why the need for a full tower case?

Just wondering, may be able for some people to buy full size graphic card

        • +1

The issue with this is power. If it needs power input the PSU on these might not have the connections for it so you will need to buy a case and CPU. If the card only needs 75w though it should be ok.

There have been deals on here for a HP Z640 that can support a full size card using adapter cables for the PSU. Some deals even came with one. Older CPU though performance is not too far apart:

          https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Xeon-E5-1650-v3-…

        • But the PSU on these is like 220w so then you will need a new PSU then adaptors if you can get them as it's not a standard pinout on the board

  • 1 year warranty is nice

just wondering if I could put those into this PC?

    • +1

      Sure Can

    • +1

You certainly can, but it will only run at PCIe 3.0 speeds. Either way it is a great drive and a decent upgrade.

  • +2
  • -2

How the speed this i5 compare with their i7

  • +11

With 2 years of covid lock downs I doubt these business PCs got much use so they are pretty good value

  • +2

Out of curiosity, what will you use this for? What can a home server do? Thank you!

    • Mine runs local smart home devices so the cloud isnt spying on me, runs something like plex that serves up local media like a private netflix app (including to remote devices, like my phone at work). Oh and can run a p25 radio decoding app in conjuction with a 30 buck usb key to decode digital radio, and listen in to emergency servives. Just for giggles.

Theres a lot of things you could use one for. Like a Pi hole to block ads across your whole network, etc etc.

You could use it as a cctv server with a far better app than the generic off the shelf shite, and cloud backup of events.

If you like to tinker, its cheap laughs.

      • If you've got one of these things, any idea what the idle power draw is?

I've tended to stick to low power systems/SBCs whenever possible. Off memory my 'high power' 24/7 server is ~20W but all it has to do is play video and act as a fileserver.

        • +4

Have the HP equiv with a i7-8700. At idle it can pull around 10w. Light loads add a few watts but flat out it can pull ~100w!

If you cap the CPU performance (linux undervolt, disable turbo et all) you can reduce it further. The turbo modes chew up proportionally more power than what they give in performance. YMMV. All depends on your needs.

      • +1

tell me more about this please "p25 radio decoding app in conjuction with a 30 buck usb key to decode digital radio, and listen in to emergency services"

      • What decoder? im interested in doing that to my server!

    • I'm planning the below so far, will see how we go.

      1. Home Assistant
      2. CCTV recording (on a separate non-internet network)
      3. Steam/download cache for LAN parties
      4. Scanner/Printer server
      • +1

There's a feature in steam beta now to pull game files from other steam clients on other PC's locally.

        • Nice! Glad that's coming, this can just be a backup server then.

          • @Alzori: Used it today. 25 min download went down to 1.5 minutes.

  • +1

I have the 6500 cpu with 16gb ram and 2x 3.5" HDDs and nvm boot drive it's a bit janky but works well minimal noise and heat really impressed

    • What kind of idle power draw are you getting? (If you know)

      • Couldn't tell you sorry but it's on a 65w CPU so shouldn't be much

    • Hey man how did you fit 2 X 3.5mm HDD in there? I mean there's no room for it. Did you removed the DVD drive and installed a HDD caddy?

      • I left one in the caddy, and cut a hole and the other one sits outside the case

        • LoL, does it looked ugly having it outside of the case?

          • @HandsomeMonkey: Doesn't bother me it's a plex server so it sits in the tv cabinet with the router and I never see it

      • I have 2 sit on top of the case. Now I'm eyeing to buy a holder for them.

        • Wouldn't USB HDD be easier if you just going to have it sits on the top of it?

  • +1

I hope that 20% cash back are still there…

  • Really good cheap option for a "Parents" or a study build for the kids

  • Can anyone with one of these currently (running an i5-8500) provide insight on the idle power draw? My current home server uses a NUC but I need to add a few HDD so I'm looking for an upgrade for cheap but with comparable power draw. Anything 20w+ idle is unacceptable for my use case, as the yearly costs really start to add up and when it's on idle (90% of the time) it is completely unnecessary. Any insight is appreciated :)

Edit: I want to do a build with a N6005 Mobo but that board alone is like $100 more than this entire PC.

    • The low cost setup could save you in the first 5-10 years or something. Linus tech has a video for this and they mention the power comparison. These PCs are cheap only due to the massive upgrade by schools and businesses. So we can take advantage of that

  • Grabbed, thanks. Cpu seems to eclipse my main i7 tower even, lol

Also this is the full fat i5-8500 vs the i5-8500T. About 50% faster

    https://versus.com/en/intel-core-i5-8500-vs-intel-core-i5-85…

    • At the cost of almost 100% more power… but hopefully it can still run cool and quiet if it's not doing much.

      • +1

Well yes, that’s the power ceiling when 100% utilisation. Good to have it on tap when needed.

  • +1

I'm struggling to share a link on mobile now, but having more of a look it seems like the majority of this seller's items are "30-40% off" similar to this listing, so have a look around if you had a different refurb PC in mind.

  • I bought this one for my old girl last night, same store. Considering cancelling for this one, but it's probably not worth the hassle.

  • this video guide might help those who want the easiest way to set up a home server

  • Anyone know the memory configuration? 8x2 or 4x4? Is it using standard desktop DDR4?

  • +2

Ozbargained - try: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234547468805. Same box but with only 8gb ram, but you get a dvd drive and a second 500gb hdd. Use code SNSMD4FKPJ68SJ7M for $20 off for a total of $249.50

    Back in stock.

Does anyone know what Integrated Graphics this has and if it will run 4K @ 60hz?

    • +1

Intel UHD Graphics 630. 4k60 no problem. Also does hardware h265 encoding in hardware I believe, making it a hugely capable plex server.

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-UHD-Graphics-630-GPU-Ben…

      • Thanks for that, I will probably pick one up next time that they are on sale maybe even 2, I have a feeling like my existing plex build is going to die soon.

4k60 is needed for work, as my screen is a 42" screen.

  • +1

Might be a stupid question but Is this any good for games?

  • Also wondering if good for games for the boy
    But now says $369 :(

  • Sff gp I compatible?
    Eg. Gtx 1650 sff

    • Correct

      • woah. thatll be expensive! might as well buy a proper full size gaming rig at those prices

      • What a joke, been waiting for an upgrade to my 1650 low profile for almost 3yrs and this is what's available?

  • All you need is a low profile GTX 1650 card to turn it into a gaming computer for your kids.

  • +2

Bought this yesterday. Got a message to say it is not available. Was offered 8GB RAM, old 256GB SSD and old 500GB HDD instead of 16GB RAM and new 256GB SSD.

    • Same for me and for Westpac. I'm pushing for 16Gb.

      • i just realised, you're the OP and you didn't get the orignal config? thats dodgy

    • yea feels very bait and switch, its basically the other listing above.

Is Technology Locker a reliable company, common MO for them to do that??

      • It'll be 1-2 guys flipping ex-corporate PCs and doing the bare minimum to them, which is always a bit of a gamble. You can get great prices, but if they get an item description or quantity wrong there's not much you can do about it. Have a look at their linkedin or webpage for an idea of how big the company is.

    • I've cancelled mine too. Also wanting the 16GB and can't be bothered changing the RAM.

  • +1

Same here. Not impressed at all. Was offered 8gb and used SSD and 500gb hdd. Cancelling order.

  • +1

I got the same email. It's made me grumpy

  • I pushed for 16GB they wouldnt allow it. Honestly how can we leave a negative review? I mean in addition to telling us no new SSD, they also say we cant do 8GB unless pay $85.

    • +1

does this qualify for a negative vote? for listing and taking payment without sufficient stock or potential bait and switch

      rules for negative vote:
      Issue with retailer (For example:)
Previous purchases were not received or the shipping time exceeded what was expected. Example 1 Example 2
Issues arose which were not rectified in a satisfactory or timely manner.

    • +1

You got $85? For me it was $100 to get 16Gb of RAM. Definitely feels bait-and-switchy.

  • +2

FYI, just saw they halved the ram and replaced the ssd with hd and asked if i wish to accept. Didn’t even see it till next message came of canceled order. 😂

Smooth operators with the bait and switch.

    • Did they cancel your order with the comment "buyer asked to cancel" without you responding?

      • Yes

        • Lol shady shit.

  • I've reported them to eBay so we'll see what happens with that, pretty poor behaviour.

  • +2

geez so no one, including OP, got the "deal"? Seller is a total waste of time.

    • Wondering the same thing - did anyone get the deal?

Particularly curious since the seller has the 20% off coupon which stacks with other eBay coupons, and I’d be willing to wait for another decent deal if they’re honourable.

But if they’ve reneged on everyone, I’ll just grab a 7050 or 7060 off one of the many other sellers…

      • +1

Yea seems like a good deal but their MO sounds like after purchase they will try and convince you to switch to another system. If you don't bite they will just cancel order.

  • Got the same message as everyone

They offered the used ssd with the 500gb HDD with the 16gb of ram, which as first I accepted cause I would have replaced them both anyways.

Then changed the offer to only 8gb with the used drives.

Cant leave feedback, ebay report seller page doesnt work…

    • +1

The report seller page didn't work for me on mobile, but when I changed to desktop site I was able to submit it. I linked to this page as a reference to more discussion about the issue so hopefully eBay can deal with them properly.

    • +1

You can leave feedback. You just have to do it a different way

      Copy the item number.
Open new tab and paste this link: https://www.ebay.com.au/fdbk/leave_feedback

Put in the item number in the [search your orders] box; just above the first item feedback list; right hand side.

The listing should now appear and for you to leave your feedback.

  • +1

    Got the refund.

Purchased this one instead - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/125855178018?hash=item1d4d8d9d22…
