Didn't buy as I already have an equivalent Dell, but looks like a good deal.
The Dell is fine for routine web browsing and Word processing, so this should be too.

  • Have the same one with 4590t and ithas no issues running Windows 11. Yes it's unofficial but was no issue installing

    • Microsoft will always find a way to bug your system soon

      • Yep, they've already openly come out and said they're working on ways to stop updates / version upgrades on unsupported hardware

        • They will find a way but then there will be those who will find ways to get around this. It will be a cat and mouse game for a little bit at least.

come out and said they're working on ways to stop updates / version upgrades

          This is completely false.

Microsoft themselves offer official ways to install Windows 11 onto unsupported hardware.

What they have said is that unsupported hardware is unsupported. If an update breaks something they might not fix it.

          • @Nom:

            This is completely false.

No it's not. With the latest feature update Microsoft have made it harder to install Win 11 on unsuppored hardward and the official line from Microsoft is

This PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements for running Windows 11 - these requirements help ensure a more reliable and higher quality experience. Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won't be entitled to receive updates. Damages to your PC due to lack of compatibility aren't covered under the manufacturer warranty.

Which is taken directly from - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/installing-windo….

They're openly stating both that you won't be entitled to receive updates and that if an update breaks your PC you won't be supported. You may still get feature updates running it on unsupported hardware, but you also may not.

            • @dmouse81: Yes this has always been the case since day 1.

              They have categorically not

come out and said they're working on ways to stop updates / version upgrades

So not sure what you're trying to say 🤷🏼‍♂️

It's always been unsupported on unsupported hardware. In practice it all works perfectly fine.

One day it might not, but we're not at that day.

If you have eBay plus, this has a bunch of Lenovo PCs.

  • Boo.. I’m trying to sell my old m73p on eBay for a non-bargain price.

Interesting this has wifi pictured as though it’s built onto the mobo, but says USB adapter?

Guess I better go update my listing…

Just a quick reminder that this only has a dual core CPU. Gets smoked by every other comparable i5 which are pretty much all quad core.

Is something like this sufficient to use to RPD into my work machine? Think GPU wise.

    • -1

For just purely RPD I just use a $50 “thin client” . They have automatic USB passthrough which is very convenient

    • You mean RDP? The answer is yes.

waiting for dell deal lol. all lenovo one does not support hdmi and wifi

    • Fair, but you still need to be careful with Dell. My Optiplex 3020m - very similar to this - doesn't have onboard wifi.

      • Yeah i think wifi is fine. It's just not worth for me to buy a hdmi - dp adapter when the machine only cost me 90 dollar

        • I'm using a DP to HDMI adapter cable which was around $7 from Ebay. Make sure you get an active adapter though.

          • @Roddi: It would be better deal to get the dell version as dell provide wifi and hdmi port… I believe price difference is only 10-20 dollar.

    • Why would you wait when you can just buy this right now and use a DP to HDMI cable.

Everything can output HDMI with the right cable…

Would this be good for a Plex server (Adding external HDD)

    • Wait for a 6500T or above deal, better iGPU's for transcoding and twice the CPU cores.

    • you can find 6500T for around $99

    • Probably fine, but the fan noise can be really annoying if it is in the lounge room.

  • can you use these to browse the internet and do office works stuff? Ty. Wanting to buy this for my kids.

    • +1

This should be plenty. Plug a cheap keyboard mouse and monitor and away your kids go.

But some will call child services on you for not getting them a top spec imac.

    • At least get a SFF or USFF with a 6500T

The CPU in this is ancient.

  • Oh lordy. I'm using an old Mac mini as a Plex server and it's now no longer supported. I could hack a newer version of OSX on it, or install linux, but I was thinking about just getting a newer (compared to the Mac) pc but I've fallen down the rabbit hole. I can get the 4570T but for not much more there's the 4590T. Or make the jump to the 6400T or 6500T…. or the 7040, 7050 or 7400 or to heck with it go the 8400 or the 8500. No doubt have missed a few there. Don't really care about Windows 10 or 11 as will almost certainly put linux on it. I dunno. Probably will want 16GB. Time for me to do a spreadsheet to compare them I guess!

I ran Plex on a 4570T and 8GB with Linux Mint and it was fine for my usage. Got sick of fighting the Plex to rescan library and switched to Jellyfin, but that could have just been my iggerance.

      • Have thought about Jellyfin, but have a lifetime plan with Plex so seems a waste to jump ship. It's been running fine on the Mac mini although of course transcoding anything is challenging for it. Have had some pain running Plex on my Nvidia Shield (when it worked it was great, but they kept sending updates out that would break things and it was just annoying - so I just use the Shield as a client), and before that it worked perfectly on the Qnap but again age meant it was no longer supported. Anyhoo, I jumped for an 8500T with 16GB as, well, why not. I know that Plex can happily live with 8gb but I can always look at using it for something else - maybe docker and put a few other things on it. Will see.

        • Is there a reason you actually need transcoding ? Modern devices should all be able to play the original streams, and today's networking is generally fast enough too.

          • @Nom: Hardly ever. Main reason for changing is the mac no longer being supported.
