    I don't own a watch

Apple Watch. Syncs to iPhone, silent wrist buzzes for calls/messages/meetings and does everything I need it to. Health stuff a bonus.

May spring for the Apple Watch Ultra alongside iPhone 15 Pro in Sept if it's a considerable upgrade (past few years haven't been…).

    • I hope they do something exciting with gen 2 ultra

      • Word on the street is they won’t refresh the Ultra on a yearly cycle. I hope that’s incorrect as I’d like to get one in September.

        • They either will upgrade the SoC or nothing. Personally I’d buy the current one if in the market - I absolutely guarantee it will be $1499 AUD not $1299 AUD the next model.

2024 model is rumoured to have a Microled panel and be basically just plain ridiculous. Wouldn’t surprise me if they sell out for weeks for that model.

    • +4

Apple Watch Ultra wasn’t a considerable upgrade?

      • +2

        iPhones haven’t been.

      • Tbh I don’t even know what i really want in a next gen model , the 7 already does everything I ever wanted a maybe I can just get whatever next standard watch is next but in the higher tier finish.

        • +1

Agree, not much hardware they can add. What I would like is for watches to be standalone (no iphone require) and for providers to have standalone apple watch prepaid plans but that is unlikely to happen.

          • +1

@yoquierotaco: They are semistand alone now as you can just set it up once with a family members phone, it no longer needs to be tied to a specific phone. But i dont think you'd want to be doing that with anyone but a family member, it's probably tied in with icloud. The stated purpose was for kids.

    • +4

That describes pretty much all smart watches.

      • +2

Yeah. Hybroid is describing my old Pebble.

        • And my old $60 Amazfit Bip (that only need charging every 4 or 5 weeks. )

      • Oh there are others? /s

        • 😀

    Number: Two
Why: A G-Shock for sporty occasions and a dress watch for more formal occasions.
Collection is headed: Nowhere, because the G-Shock refuses to die.
Rate of growth: Nil - Stagnant for about the last 10 years.

Where do I usually check the time? On my phone!

And if you care to elaborate:

    Why?
I have a Seiko 5 Sports Street Fighter V (Chun Li) watch.

    Where is your collection headed?
I would've liked the whole set but didn't have the money at the time. I may get the Ken version later.

    What's the rate of growth?
Not much. My wallet itself is worth more.

    • +5

That Chun Li watch is absolutely beautiful.

    • +1

I kinda want just the band…. Nice watch though… Better than the guille g-shock in my opinion…

      • The Guile and Ryu watches are quite average. Ken is cool visually. Blanka is too out there.

The Naruto & Boruto set was interesting. If I cared enough, I would've either picked the Gaara or Lee watches.

The Jojo set was also cool. But I'm not the biggest fan of Vento Aureo.

  • +2

2x Citizen Eco-Drives, one Edifice and one Garmin Instinct.

  • +7

I used to wear a watch religiously until about 20 years ago. Then stopped, don't know why. Now I can't stand them. In the last few years I tried a few times for function, tried a few times for fashion - nup, feel like I have a ball and chain attached to my wrist.

Twenty years ago I also wore PJs or undies to bed and didn't feel like I was trapped like a mummy, but that's a different story.

    • +5

Honestly your aversion to wearing gear at night probably relates more than you think…. Sounds like light sensory issues…. (Not a doctor of course, but ya never know)

      • +2

Interesting take. I'll keep that in mind. Ta.

  • +4

One. A better question is how many watch bands do you have?

    • +5

How many bands do you watch?

    • At least as many as I have watches…… But I tend to switch my metal bands to leather so that creates duplicates…

    • +4

I have 3 watches but no watch bands…

      • Three fob watches! Nice.

    • I feel personally attacked.

    • 2 times the number of watches. I have mostly 22mm bands but I got 1 watch that is 20 so I had to buy some straps for it.

  • +2

Number: 20+ (Not certain of exact no)

Why: I like the look of old cheap workhorse clunkers from the Soviet Union originally, then it spread into other watches, later into deals posted by Watchnerd…. People still dislike my opinion on Braun's award for design though. (IF Design awards ARE payed for to enter)

Collection is headed: Hard to say…. I'm looking to eventually learn to 'maintain' the NH35 movements and buy spare's… maybe get the W1000 timegrapher at some point for fun(when play money permits)

Rate of growth: Sporadic, I see something I like I may buy it….But my watches are very inexpensive items, no Rolex or even many seiko/citizens……

Where do I usually check the time? Like Bobbified…. On my phone!

Currently one, I gave my dive watch to a tribal chief in Fiji recently so I'll be on the hunt to a replacement until that sweet Rolly Sub becomes a reality in a few years.

  • +3

I only own one watch, an Apple Watch 3, which i bought 3 years ago 2nd hand for $120.

Prior to that I didn’t own a watch for about 7 years.

Prior to that, I wore a Casio digital watch for about 2 years, bought in USA for $20.

Prior to that, I didn’t own a watch for many years. Prior to that, I can’t remember.

I’ve been thinking about buying a non-smart watch for the last 2 years but still haven’t made up my mind.

    • I'd buy a Apple watch for $120, congrats :)

  • +1

Started collecting Chinese watches and a few others some years ago. But not currently interested enough to even look. Also have some classic diver remakes.
Bought a smartwatch that includes a decent dive computer and now not interested in wearing any else.

  • +1

Two watches. Both gold Citizen Eco Drives with gold metal bands. One very light face and one very dark face. Both more than 15 years old. Much smaller face than you can buy now.
    Why? no idea
Where is your collection headed? nowhere
What's the rate of growth? zero

  • +1

    Apple watch 7.
and old watches, series 0 & 3 I still charge occasionally to keep the batteries alive, and an old early '90's Seiko dress watch from when watches only had the time and maybe date.

    • Watches often had a lot more than the time and date in the 90s. There were moon phase watches and then astronomical watches. Alarm watches, watches with gongs. Any of that ring a bell? :D Of course, multi timezones and chronographs. The big Swiss co's were making perpetual calendars (only have to adjust every 100years). Seiko were making computer watches with reminders, games and TV watches in the 80s!

      • certainly, 1970s casios were great, are great, when I first got one it was real science fiction stuff that was unbeliveable, but now ? wow! calendar/diary, messages, weather, sync'd to a time server ! step count, heart rate, oxygen level, ECG, sleep recording, reminders, music playlist, podcasts, digital wallets/cards, Dick Tracy phone calls,…

  • +2

    Apple Watch ultra
    ripcurl digital
    Seiko divers
Use the Ultra 95% of the time

  • +3

    No. Owned

Honestly don’t know. Somewhere between 20-30 at a guess?

    Why?

    I just like mechanical watches

    Where is your collection headed?

No where. There’s a few watches I’d like to own but there’s other things I’d rather spend the money on (plus there’s a fair few watches that need servicing)

    What's the rate of growth?

It stopped in 2018. Combination of factors being spending too much on them already and full-time flippers entering the market in the years prior making hard to get stuff even harder to get

Lost my Mi Band swimming yesterday, so now down to zero.

    • Mine is lost in my room or at least the charger….. :( Had it set up without needing a Xiaomi account and local telemetry for privacy, it was a fun gadget….

    • I lost my 1st gen Mi Band riding my motorbike. Haven't bothered with them since.

  • +2

One year ago I bought a Garmin watch. Been wearing it everyday since. Before that I hadn't owned a watch since I was a little.

    • Same! I wore watches all the time from a young age til about 20, it was lost, and I never had the urge to replace. I've recently received a Fitbit, and never looked back and I feel naked when I'm not wearing it haha, strange after all these years without wearing something.

  • +1

A few. Mi Band 6 is on my wrist 24/7 usually but for special occasions I’ll wear my Rodina automatic normally.

I have a couple of Casios also but those don’t get worn much.

    Clearly not a watch snob.

  • +1

    I don't own a watch.

  • -1

    Watches…. I remember them…

  • +2

How many? Dunno. Definitely more than 10.

Why? I collect Swatch. They're cheap (relatively), sometimes I'm lucky enough to find them at charity shops. They're great for teaching - ever seen a reliable clock in a classroom since they did aay with the old electric Smiths? Neither have I. Plus, it encourages students to engage with reading time.

Rate? Eh, lately not a lot. Depends on releases in Australia and designs. Last one i got was the Queen, i was interested in the recent art series but Swatch keep releasing 41s over 34s.

Thinking of switching to more traditional style/antique watchs over time.

  • +1

Wow, 4 people have 50+ watches!?
Where's watchnerd (or that guy that was buying watches from DJs) curious how many they have…

  • +1

2 watches, F-91W that I wear everyday and a Seiko presage that I might wear a few times a year.

  • Someone summon rosebank or watch nerd.

  • +2

Do pocket watches count? My bro was a watchmaker. I got thrown out of board meeting suggesting to develop smartwatches at Omega. So in protest I sold Japanese watches with scrolling LCD displays back in 1980. Omega and their group hired a dirty immigrant from Lebanon to work as the dirty accountant to liquidate a group of companies.
Just like Elon Musk, an immigrant from S.Africa named Nicolas Hayek. He turned the factories around. Now he is dead his kids have not enough of a global vision.

    • how much bitterness did you squeeze into 1 paragraph? lol

      • Bittersweet: I was going to order a model Plaid. Poverty island here has now deleted it!!
        Only available in civilized areas!

  • +1

i have several. tag heuer monaco is the only one that is not in storage. replaced the leather band 12 months ago, but I've worn it less than a week in the last 5 years.

covid lock down really scuttled my enthusiasm for wearing a watch

    • Ditto. I was wearing watch every day prior to lockdowns

  • Here the story of the Dude with the best watch collection I know of : https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/19/business/safe-deposit-box…

    • Pixel Watch - my personal phone is a Pixel
    • Apple Watch - my work phone is an iPhone

Own multiple bands/straps for both. Only wear when I'm out, don't like them when I'm at home or on work desk.

  • +2

    It's time for another watch

  • +2

None. I like freedom on my wrist.

  • +2

casio f91w and apple watch. apple watch for day to day and casio if I go outdoors for long periods (don't want to be charging apple watch every day. Definitely do not want any more watches.

    • Wear them together and make a confusing fashion statement. I'm cool, but I don't care.

  • Watch? Suit? Shirts with collars? Tie? Shiny shoes? What do I need any of them for now I'm long retired?

  • +1

How many watches do you own?
About 30 give or take, mainly Swiss automatics

    Why?
I've been collecting for over 15 years, I enjoy the hunt.

    Where is your collection headed?
Consolidating down to a 5-6 watch collection. Probably Submariner, Navitimer, Aqua Terra World Timer, IWC Big Pilot and Panerai. Servicing costs of so many watches is the reason I am looking to reduce collection size along with the fact I feel like the majority of mine are underworn and under appreciated.

    What's the rate of growth?
I sell a lot also, I would say in a given year I average about 1 new watch a week, with just about the same going out of the collection.

    • What reference BP? 5002 is my favorite but, for better or worse, my wrists are too small for it

      • I think probably the new 43mm version. I like that it doesn't have a date and it wears perfectly on my wrist. I may get the ceramic Top Gun 43 version.

    • +1

      flipping 50 watches a year?

That's a full time job! haha

  • +1

    Tissot PRX, Orient Bambino, Moonswatch.

  • Would have copped a Rolex for 50% off
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/768148

  • Two that I'm wearing "actively"- Garmin and a dress watch.

  • None. See no point when my phone tells the time.

  • +1

    2 smart watches
    1 hybrid watch
    2 digital watches
    2 analog watches

Currently I have a fascination with naviforce watches, cheap and look good.
I am wearing my skagan connected hybrid watch as it has a 8 month battery life and looks great with my dark tan leather cuff band, does the basics which is what I like.

Would I purchased more watches? Yes, would love to find my old g shock replacement which is all stainless steel.

  • +1

S4 Apple watch for sleep tracking
S8 Apple watch for daily use

  • +1

Two. Tag Heuer Professional 200 and a Linjer Minimalist over last 20 years. Was going to get a Tudor if budget ever allowed but reckon i will get one of those DIY kits first before i do that…

  • +2

    7.
Started out with Japanese quartz watches when I was a fresh grad without mutch money. Then got a few Swiss automatics. Now have a no name AliExpress $80 special after realising Swiss automatics are a silly money hole (I don't treat them well so repair cost are stupid, and $300-400 just to get them oiled and serviced every 3-4 years adds up the more watches you have). No more watches until one breaks.

  • +1

8, but it sort of crept up on me and I wouldn't plan to have this many. A few gifts, a few bargains I couldn't miss and I have more than I need now.
.they all get worn and I love each one, but if I was more intentional I'd have maybe 4 to 5.

  • +1

I have heard of people buying expensive brand name watches for investments but always wondered how they would ever sell them for a reasonable price (presumably Ebay, etc would be risky & unlikely to attract a good price).

    • +1

You sell them to other watch dealers or your Facebook market place groups.

  • +1

voted solely for watches - not including smartwatches.
Usually get smart phone + watch every two years from work, so kind of no deal and no fun.

  • +1

    3

    Tissot Auto with metal bands
Frederique Constant auto moonphase with tan leather bands
    Panerai with black leather bands

    Why?
Like how they look and to tell time quicker than taking the phone out.

Where is your collection headed? Nowhere, probably will add omega snoopy and a Jaeger if financial situation doesn't prohibit it. After these two watches, I will be content.

What's the rate of growth? Aligns with my wallet's growth.

  • +2

    2:
    1 Vintage Rolex, 1 Rolex, 2 x Seiko
I don't wear them as much as I should, but love them all for their sentimental value. Each one has memories.

  • +1

none now since I converted to smartphone only - not quite so convenient for quick checks of the time (reaches into pocket, pulls out phone, swivels to wake, reads time, puts back in pocket)

but less wrist ache from a day with a strap around my left wrist

I had an Apple Watch on loan for some research I participated in, and that was nice to be able to see my peak heart rate during my morning pushups hit like 148bpm before returning to my resting rate more like 67

but otherwise - having the charge the thing up every day was a bit of a PITA and I was not unhappy to return it to sender.

  • +1

one, galaxy smartwatch, but I have 6 different colored bands for it, my family keeps bitching that I'm wasting my money thinking its a new watch when I change the band lol

  • +1

3 watches. Samung Pro 5, a rolex and an omega. On wailtist for 3 other rolex watches.

  • +2

5 that I actually wear plus some cheap ones lying around. The ones I actually wear are a omega and Tudor divers, an IWC dress watch, a withings steel for exercise and a Timex I bought for fun but kinda like wearing.

All get worn , and always wear a watch daily. I just feel naked without one.

Will probably get something cheaper to wear to the beach or swimming though, the omega Seamaster has copped far too much abuse but still keeps trucking on year after year

  • +3

    Clicked on the wrong option.
I must be a voyer, I like to watch.

    • +1

Updated - allow changing votes checked.

  • +3

I had 10 about 5 years ago. Sold 6 in 2019 and used the money to get my Apocalypse Now 6105 Seiko divers restored.

Will keep the seiko forever. Intend to sell the other 3 before Xmas as I don't wear them. I just run a fitbit these days.

  • -4

I was surprised at most respondents claiming not not own a watch.

I wonder if it's a point of pride or something like that.

Then I realised that it someone truely doesn't own a single watch, they are 100% dependent on a smartphone, which imo is just sad. Means they can't ever go on multi day camping trips, serious hikes, or be away from a charging point for more than 24 hours. I guess that's modern life, but it strikes me as pretty lame.

I have 5 watches, one is dressy and was a purchasing mistake. The others are old beaters or watches that I use when doing outdoors stuff.

I rarely wear a watch, most the time a smartphone gets me by. But a smartphone can't be the only option, all the time.

    • +2

huh. It just means they can’t do all those things while knowing the exact time of day it is. You don’t need a watch to do any of those things.

      • -4

You don't need to time transport at each end, estimate if you've got time to make it to a particular campsite by nightfall if it's cloudy, or set an alarm to wake up at 3am for an alpine start?

Yeah, unless you grew up like Tarzan, you need accurate time to be safe in the outdoors.

Even moreso for shorter but intense activities like scuba diving (crazy important) or ocean-going canoeing. For those sports, people obsess about serious timepieces.

My own sports are sedate enough that a cheap G-Shock is sufficient. But reliance on a smartphone or eyeballing the sun would be crazy irresponsible.
