  • Can this be upgraded to Win11 Pro for free?

WIN 10 PRO if you select any SSD size (License is embedded in the bios)

Can this be upgraded to Win11 Pro for free?

Yes, Since this PC supposedly comes with a Windows 10 Pro licence then you can upgrade to 11 Pro for free, because upgrades to Win 11 from Win 10 is free.

      @havok44

WIN 10 PRO if you select any SSD size (License is embedded in the bios)

Why do you say that ? the eBay ad doesn't mention anything about needing to get a SSD to get Windows, and the licence of these machines are imbedded in the BIOS of the computer, SSD has no relevance.

      • +6

I assume they mean it'll have an installed Windows 10 OS if you choose an SSD, otherwise if you choose no SSD you don't

        • +2

I suppose so.. although its pretty obvious that if you order without a drive then there is no place to install Windows :)

          • @opt: I bet there'll be at least one customer who gets it and complains "NOTHING HAPPENS WHEN I TURN IT ON" 😂

      • if upgraded to 11, will windows push security update for 6th gen cpu?

    • +6

Not officially, as 6500 is not compatible with Win11.

      • Thanks for that. Very helpful.

Only use Macs myself but always look for super SFF PCs for my wife's business.

      • I read somewhere (probably here) that although it will block the 'upgrade' you can just do a fresh install anyway. Any truth (if you know)?

        • +4

I have the same gen Dell usff and it runs Win11 fine.
From memory, if you create the install media with Rufus it gives you an option to ignore the CPU generation, so it just installs as usual.

          • @mskeggs: will windows push security update?

            • +1

@jjj123: Yes, you just prompted me to install the latest. I don’t believe there is any restriction at all, compared to running on a later machine at this time.
And I can’t imagine MS will do anything to stop successfully running systems stop doing so. I think it is because:
              A) they want systems with the latest TPM management layer so they might in future control what software is installed “for your safety”
              B) want users to have a powerful machine as the baseline, as adding features etc. is much easier if performance is high and they don’t have to worry about earlier ‘unsupported’ systems.

            • @jjj123: I'm running a 4th gen CPU on windows 11 and I'm getting win updates. What I think people are confused about is the fact that if U call up Microsoft for support they are within their right to refuse support to you. But using Geek squad will support you for $. Also note that the risk I see is more from driver updates to the hardware you are using from vendors. But that's not stopping me…old gen CPU looks to be good value for money. Gen 8s and newer will hold their value due to users thinking they need it for win 11

I have exact one with 6400T from the same seller running Win11 Pro with couple of Hyper-V servers, works perfectly fine. It came with a HDD from a previous deal ($109 or so) and I swapped it with a BX500 240 GB lying around and added another 8 GB RAM for $27 from Amazon. It also has a slot for M.2 SATA drive if I remember correctly.

  • Bought one, thanks havok44

  • All ssd options out of stock

Only in the 8gb version, 16gb still has some SSD

    • get 16gb, 8gb nowadays is not enough for daily use.

my 8gb laptop constantly showing above 80% of 8gb usage of ram for just openning word, excel and some websites.

Processor model is slightly wrong in the title/description. Should be 6400T rather than 6500T. There is a little difference, won't matter for most at this price point.

Why is Intel Core i5-6500T better than Intel Core i5-6400T?

    13.64% faster CPU speed 4 x 2.5GHz vs 4 x 2.2GHz
34°C higher maximum operating temperature 100°C vs 66°
0.3GHz higher turbo clock speed 3.1GHz vs 2.8GHz
    13.54% higher PassMark 4846 vs 4268
    128KB bigger L1 cache 256KB vs128KB
    0.06MB/core more L2 cache per core 0.26MB/core vs 0.2MB/core
10.97% higher PassMark result (single) 1831 vs 1650
    8.51% higher multi-core Geekbench 5 result 2449 vs 2257

    • I wonder if it is really 6400 or 6500?
M700 had versions even with i7-6700 as per https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkCentre/ThinkCe… but OP's eBay item title/description/specs table indeed all have different CPU model.

      • Yeah was wondering, main eBay title and description is 6400. Only cut/paste table indicates 6500. Would be happy if is 6500.

        • My two M700 both have 6400, but yeah it would be nice to see more 6500 options, even though I probably don't need another one :) or do I?

      • I got one and it was 6500 BUT it was an M900 not a M700.
There doesnt seem to be any great differences between the M700 and M900 apart from the CPU

Got one of these for the kids to do homework on - installed Chrome OS Flex. Works well.

Do these or any other micro pc have an mxm slot? I've got a 1660s I want to see if it will work on these

Can anyone let me know if this would be a sufficient PC for a pure streaming rig for Twitch/Youtube. Streaming x3 1080p 60fps cameras at the same time with a proper mic. Thanks in advance.

    • +3

nope it doesn't have a dedicated GPU and the CPU will struggle with such a demand…

      • Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. Do you have any advice on a cost effective set up to handle this? Thanks.

        • Depends on what you mean by cost effective. Cheap or big bang for limited bucks.
And does it have to be compact?
Assuming not, any number of refurbed or second hand boxes with a reasonable GPU will be less than $500, probably with win10 already installed.

If you want it to be set and forget, with a fair bit of grunt and compact I reckon a Mac mini tbh. You could probably still pick up an M1 from somewhere for $800 new if you look around a bit. Officeworks currently has it for $837. Who knows what you can get one on gumtree SH for.

        • Streaming is very broad. What do you plan to use it for? What are you going to stream, what are you going to run? Is the 3 cameras going to be live recorded and uploaded simultaneously? Or you'll only show one cam, meaning you'll probably need a switcher?

You need to open a thread in the forum or Reddit (probably a sub for streaming helps) with all your exact needs and expectations to get appropriate help. I barely understood what you're trying to do, forget trying to find a device for you, or direct you to right place.

If you are into Home Assistant, this makes a good PC to load HAOS onto it.

    • Bit overkill just for Hass OS. Install unraid and run dockers

      • Its a $90 machine…. No having to worry about USB pass through and whatnot.

        • You don't need USB passthru with unraid and you can run VMs as well as dockers

          • @asa79: You do if you want to run HAOS as a VM and need to use a zigbee or a zwave dongle. But having said that, passing through a USB controller is pretty easy.

            • @opt: Run deconz, mqtt, mariadb, nodered, nginx, android debug and home assistant as a docker under unraid. Works perfectly. But each to their own. I like having multiple home assistant sessions one for prod, Dev and Testing

      • +1

Good for HASS Os with the addition of Frigate plugin for Camera NVR. Works well with up to 3 cameras, any more add a USB Coral Accelerator.

  • What are the dimensions of the machine?

    • +2

      179mm W x 182.9mm D x 34.5mm H

      • Thanks.

  • What type of SSD should I buy for this? SATA or M2?

    • +1

It probably doesn't really matter I don't think it would support m2 being the age

      • Thanks.

      • Someone above disagrees with you and said it supports m2

    • +4

I'm using M2 drive for OS, and added SATA as 2nd drive for data.

      • +1

        Thanks.

      • How did you get that to work? My mate and i bought a bunch and none of our machines even recognize we have an m2 drive in the system even in the bios

  • Pretty good machine to setup HA and few other VMs.

  • Seems 8GB ram is out of stock. 16GB ram / no ssd is $129
