Breville Barista Pro Coffee Machine - Stainless Steel $825 (RRP ~$999) + Delivery ($0 MEL C&C) @ Countdown Deals

Product 89BES878BSS - Stainless Steel only

First post.. be nice

I've been waiting to pull the trigger on purchasing a Breville Barista Pro machine. But my 19 year old Gaggia Classic, has just kept plodding along, with few minor repairs along the way. Until yesterday.. may she rest in pieces… in the bin.

I found this deal for a BBP at Countdown Deals for $849 (now $825), which seems a great price for a brick and mortar store. Amazon currently has it for $927.
As already posted there is also a gift pack available for redemption - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/765894. Which makes it a great deal if you need a new knock box, milk jug and glasses.

I happen to have had some spare Westpac Altitude Points, so I purchased some David Jones gift cards. (which are around 25% cheaper than redeeming for cash). David Jones were happy to match the price, given that Countdown Deals has a physical store presence.

So all in all… a great outcome for me… ymmv

I got one of these in black it is really good

Got one in cranberry for $764 last year. Extremely consistent results, which is a plus.

  • Is there any sefa or rooler with it? Or is it just a press

  • I don't believe this is one of the eligible retailers taking part in the Mother's Day promotion, unfortunately. If you can get it price matched at other stores though then nevermind

    This or https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/breville-the-barista-expr…

I love cappuccinos. Also if jb can price match this because i have a bunch of vouchers.

    • This has a better steam frother than the JB deal

  • I've had this for a few months, absolutely love it. No regrets at all

I got mine as a display model for $400 for DJ last year.

It has saved me over $3000 over the past year

      • +1

        Ripper price!

  • Mine has had problems with the steamer twice in less than a year :(

    • +1

Did they replace or repair ?

I found that if steamer has issues, most likely the holes in the steam wand are clogged. Once you unclog it, it works perfectly

Im just having issues with the automatic extraction timer ,its not consistent. Sometimes 8 sec, other times 12 sec, etc. But now i use custom mode and just waiting to 22 months and hopefully replace it to latest model next year

      • +1

First time the frother would not output the steam through the nozzle but instead through the water waste tray below. I returned and they replaced some part.
This second time, when I steam the milk, I noticed the heat isn't on the level it used to be. My froth is a little less hot for the latte. I haven't sent it back as yet.

        • Same. Mine made a bit of a loud pressure release noise and then steam came from drip tray. Was only a few months old. The repair shop went to town on parts because under warranty.

          • +1

@vagfinger: Mime was making loud pressure noise last week. So i uncloged the steam wand and its working perfectly. Also performed my monthly maintanance

        • I've had steam out the drop tray, caused by blockage on the wand. All works perfectly after a clean

          • @cook99: How do you clean the blockage?

            • @itstuan: Small needle to clean 4 pin hole
Then run a descale cycle with citric acid or descaler

            • @itstuan: Same as below advice from easternculture, a small needle poker tool is actually included but any needle or pin would do

              • +2

@cook99: If you want a manual coffee machine, you have to put the effort to regularly maintain it.

                • Always run the steam for a few seconds after frothing , the milk can backflow and clog the steam wand.
                • Always run a quick flush after removing the portafilter. The coffee ground can backflow into the machine.
                • Do a weekly clean with the tablets
                • Descale regularly. I usually descale monthly
                • Take the coffee grinder apart and give it a nice clean from the oil and residue from coffee beans (refer to manual for steps)
                • Change machine water filter regularly, and use filtered water in the water tank (i have a 3 stage filter installed under the sink.
                • Use Anti-limescale spheres

If you follow steps above, your coffee machine will last years

                • @easternculture: Great advice! 😃

                • +1

@easternculture: Descale monthly???? That's insane. You descale once a year and clean your machine with tablets no more than quarterly or as required if noticing channeling etc.

                  • @maverickjohn: I use a diluted solution. I dont go full strength for descaling.

and clean your machine with tablets no more than quarterly

The flush prompt comes up every 6 weeks so i just do it monthly now. And the brown stuff that comes out is insane

                    • @easternculture: It's still too much. Descaling solutions are too toxic to be used frequently. It's good you are pedantic with cleaning. But I assure you no company rep or cafe owner would ever advise that frequency of cleaning. For my machine I do a simple water back flush weekly. I don't even use cleaning tablets unless the water from the group head does not come out evenly.
Descale is once a year for me.

                      • @maverickjohn:

Descaling will clean out any coffee grounds in the front section and any calcium/mold/bacteria in the boiler and pump. Ideally, your machine should be descaled every month, but 2-3 months may be enough depending on how often your machine is used.

Thats from a basic google search

Citric acid is not toxic, nor is vinegar. However there is contraversy using vinegar as some say it does not work

And i run a few descaling cycles with just water post descale solution and tablets

Trust me ive done my research of many hours after i bought the machine.

                        • @easternculture: There is residual chemicals left after a descale. With citric acid it can damage rubber seals. I promise you speak to any cafe. Most will only say to descale after you have water flow issues.
I'm not sure what site you used but if they are selling descaling solutions it could be why they say to do it 2-3 monthly.
Try to use minimal detergents and descaling solutions in your machine. Simple water back flushes will do wonders . Just do that weekly.

                          • @maverickjohn: I do the simple water flushes after each use.
When i use tablets weekly, i still get brown water which us coffee residue that has backflowed in the machine

                            • @easternculture: It's up to you in the end of the day. But it's not necessary. I had my bes860 for 5 years before giving it to a friend, had a bes920 for 10 years before giving to a family… Have a oracle bes980 for 18 months before selling it as it was crap. Now have a e61 dual boiler la Pavoni Botticelli for around a year and they have all been maintained the same way. All my machines last with the same process.

                  • @maverickjohn: yeah, i think this descale recommendation is location specific.
in Sydney i dont see scale build up in my kettle at all, so i dont expect there to be much in the coffee machine .
i descale maybe once a year.

  • I have this one, and it just broke (after about 3 years). Had to repair it once about 6 months ago (fried board).

I REALLY want a Dual boiler, but I've heard they're discontinued?

    • BDB is currently available for $989

      • Where? I have been unable to find one in stock - Goodguys still advertises at 989 but they have no stock.

      • Not really…. every place they advertise it at that price, it's not available.

    • They haven't discontinued them yet afaik, but if they do it would be because they're releasing an updated model of the BDB (supposedly the Lance H. version)

    • Someone just posted this… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/772375

      • They've never had stock…

I had one. I had trouble with the consistency of the milk frother and I returned it.

Might just get an express (or impress) next time.

Frothing is a skill. The steam wand just outputs steam lol

      • Read through comments online. There are a few people who have had issues with inconsistent/weak steam pressure.

"Frothing is a skill" - Unfortunately one lacking in Perth, if you're an old fuddy duddy like me that likes a cappuccino in the morning. A flat white in a cup with chocolate powder on top is still a flat white.
I like my cappuccino with a white foamed, slightly domed, top, complete with an espresso-stained brown ring running along the edge of the cup. Maybe I'm being too specific.

        • I always get that result.
Took me a good month to perfect the skill

Also its a manual machine, dont know what you expected but if you intend to operate one, it requires some sort of skill.

If you want consistent caps, a fully automatic machine would be a better choice.

          • +1

@easternculture: Oh I was referring to the cafes here in Perth.

As my comment above, my machine has been very consistent.

            • +1

              @Tiggrrrrr: Haha . I misread lol

Main reason i bought mine is exactly the reason you mentioned above. You ask for a cap and they make you a latte.

Money better well spent on a machine

              • @easternculture: Mine was actually inconsistent. I know how to use a steam wand lol.

the output from the wand itself was inconsistent. e.g. the pressure it was outputting outside of it being in milk was inconsistent.

                • @Carrian: You do realize that any coffee machine do require maintenance eg descaling, cleaning with tablets, backflush, wipe steam-wand after each use, release steam out of wand after wiping, unclog steam-wand nozzles with supplied needle, changing water filters, use of good water, cleaning inbuilt grinder burrs, etc…………

                  • @huntabargain: mate, i have every accessory under the sun haha

i have a GG commercial account so it was cheap af.

i did everything, even before it told me to.

the only thing I did not do from your list was clean the "inbuilt grinder burrs" - which has nothing to do with the steam wand.

the inconsistency was from the start,

  • I've just chatted to JBHIFI and they've price matched in the black stainless steel. Didn't even need to be the same colour… No local stock, so they've setup an online cart for delivery at $825. Can pair this with the recent Coles Ultimate 10% Bonus deal + redeem the Mother's Day extras…

    Thanks OP!

Have this one and its my 1st coffee machine … easy + cheap to use and maintain.

Great coffee with Aldi beans and taste like cafe quality.

Need to watch youtube to learn how to froth the milk properly

  • Have this in black. Pretty great, but wish the grinder was a bit better

    • I have a barista touch which comes with a 6-spoke etzinger burr. The new barista touch impress also comes with a 6-spoke baratza burr which to me looks identical.

Lance H said this is a much nicer burr compared to the 5-spoke (present in most Breville models) and is much more similar to the ones on Sette/Baratza grinders.

I have seen forums where some were able to purchase both the upper and inner burr from Breville and upgrade. YMMV
