  • Black is $1 more expensive 😂

    • It's amazing how cheap they are selling them considering the age, only came out a couple years ago and now 70+% off rrp

      • Why do you think that is

        • +5

About to release the 6 so clearing out the 4s?

        • -5

Because Samsung products have no resale value.
The manufacture is always having deals, discounts, secret sales, member offers, giving away free shit, etc. Have a look at marketplace, it’s flooded with Samsung e-waste. I’m no fanboy by any means but you don’t see Apple doing this for a reason. It impacts your brand image / public perception.

          • +5

@[Deactivated]: u say that like having the ability to buy new at discount or second hand for cheaper is a bad thing

resale value isnt really a standard that products should be measured against

do you buy things based on reselling it, or to use it

if the answer has something to do with upgrading for newer features, then this is a superficial thing that has been inflated by all manufactures creating planned obsolescence and unnecessary high frequency of updates. For which everyone incl apple is guilty of

in terms of apple products holding value, that is slowly becoming less true given the over saturation of a single model per generation. Plus the original RRP is high to begin with with very few sales or discounts.

this is also all completely disregarding other factors such as Samsung possibly over estimating demand and manufacturing too many units of a particular product line. over supply pushing down prices

but yes, keep attributing it to nonsensical reasons

All of this being said. having no resale value isnt a catalyst for retail sales of new products. its the other way round since secondary prices are priced relative to the cost of new first then a chain reaction happens after

            • +1

@furythree: sad to see you downvoted. Funny that the resale values of these sort of things are thought about as if they're some sort of high value asset like a car

              • +1

@shxhshzhz: its obvious based on priorities and reactions as to whom buys tech for vanity and brand recognition vs utility and function or value for money

            • +2

@furythree: I totally agree with furythree

Yes, resale value does help to upgrade more frequently.

However, at the time of purchase you have already paid an extra premium for the brand (apple) which is almost close to the resale value so much so that you just getting the premium back when reselling and only if you were careful enough not to have any physical damage.

              Example: You can buy:
Samsung Galaxy S23 under $700 and use it for two years and sell it for $200 or
iPhone 14 for $1300 and sell it after 2 years for $600

Effective cost of using each phone for two years:
              Samsung is $500 ($700-$200)
              Apple $ 700 ($1300-$600)

Samsung is less upfront investment and less risk because:
If you happen to crack the screen while using for two years, you don't care as much since its cheaper to chuck it in the bin and buy a new phone; however if you cracked the screen of an iPhone its very expensive to replace

The above analysis shows then even with a much lower resale value Samsung is a better choice if you're happy with the features of the phone and don't need to consider the resale value.

              • @utsc: These devices arent "investments"

However, at the time of purchase you have already paid an extra premium for the brand (apple) which is almost close to the resale value so much so that you just getting the premium back when reselling and only if you were careful enough not to have any physical damage.

You realise its all relative right and the numbers in your example are literally made up

Iphones are objectively more expensive, and as you say, the premium you resell it for is higher partially because youre just getting the premium back, so its an illusion. However iphones still sell for a slight premium over samsung phones but the margin isnt so dramatic that people are making it out to seem
Also the length of time you use it for affects the depreciation. You basically lose 20% within a month or two after buying it, you lose 40% within the first year, but by the second year, it depreciates but starts to slow down.

A 2 ur old iphone 12 pro goes for ball park $500-600
                https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=iphone+12+pro+max&_s…

a 2 year old S21 ultra goes for $500-$600 as well (ironically last sold prices are higher)
                https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=galaxy+s21+ultra&_sa…

So like i said the premium everyone is talking about is outdated and diminishing. And where there is a difference, its neglible

But the reall 2 points everyone is missing is that
                1) If you bought second hand youd save more money than buying new obviously. But this strategy is more effective with samsung than apple phones given youll get a bigger "discount"

e.g. i bought a second hand mint condition s21 ultra a few months after release for a significant discount. around $1200 with $60 in cases and accessories i didnt have to buy either
if i can sell that for 500-600$ now. that would be a cost of $300 a year to use a flagship phone for 2 years. Which is a bargain and lower upfront cost than attempting the same with an iphone (which you obviously can do, but higher upfront cost)

                2) If all these considerations are a serious factor in your purchasing decisions, you need to rethink whether a $1500 smartphone is a wise financial decision in the first place. If you are stressed about cost of repairs, resale value to salvage. You are basically treating it like a car

Therefore resale value isnt a fair or valid objective criticism against a tech device. its more a individual circumstance concern. Samsung offers objectively affordable and decent mid range smarphones with their A series or entry level Galaxy S phone

This doesnt even go into the other points where most people like ozbargainers arent paying RRP for samsung phones anyway, most of us are getting 10-20% EPP discounts or $250 bonuses at Launch. You get none of that with apple
and repairability is generally higher on android

          • @[Deactivated]:

            facts

i know "woke" people who go samsung just because they hate apple. i owned both samsung for personal and iPhone for work. after using both and hating apple, my next phone was an iPhone. so much better, and it works and streamlines through all apple products. i ended up getting an iPad, MacBook, iMac, but no apple watch because i have a garmin fenix 6 that i like more that does better fitness tracking for my triathlons.

it is nice have a better resale value because at least you have an option to sell it and not lose so much. keyword is option. with samsung your guaranteed to not get any money back for it and will be creating waste.

People prefer the watch 5 & 5 pro which have been on sale several times. Forums are flooded with people complaining about issues with the watch 4 44mm & classic. Newer updates to wearos will probably make issues like battery life & lag even worse.

I don't get why people are even touching this watch when everything indicates watch 5 & 5pro sales should be just round the corner. This is just samsung dumping their inferior unoptimised products first. It's already been reported they have an over abundance of stock for both the 4 & 5 which they've had difficulty selling after the recent wave of rate rises and inflation. Same with their flagship phones.

          • @[Deactivated]: i mean what do u want them to do, shred it into scrap metal?

at some point the discount is low enough for ppl to put up with its issues

            thats how basic supply/demand works

            • @furythree: This discount isn't 'low enough' given the watch's flaws and it's pretty clear people buying them are just looking at the price tag and don't know what they are buying. The influx of 'why does my watch 4 last only half a day/lag..etc' comments on samsung au forums have already begun coming in.

Scrap metal or lying in someone's draw forever after being used for a few weeks? With the latter a gullible consumer has lost money instead of samsung.

      • its like over 2 years old, released in 2021

whats amazing about old tech being discounted? thats like halfway to end of relevancy in the tech world considering they release new models annually

      • Super cheap. My wife bought the 40mm (gold) watch4 for $199 at Christmas, so now $165 for the 44mm is really good.

      • They keep plenty of margin. My neighbour 's son who works at JB got a pair of headphones for $30 whereas the rrp was $180. Go figure

    • -1

no thank you, white is far superior

  • +1

I can confirm they also work with the $20, just need to add something worth $35+

    • what $20?

      • Perks

        • +1

ahh, i didnt bother messing around incase it goes OOS quickly like the previous deal

    • gone, so fast :(

      • There are still some other models left on clearance, not sure how many watch 4s however

  • Thanks OP bought, is there any difference from this deal? This does have bluetooth right?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/771849

    • +1

Same thing as that deal pretty much, all the models have Bluetooth

      • Thanks, is the battery life really only 1 day?

I'm currently still wearing the S3 and that last for 2 days

        • 44mm is closer to 2 days I've heard

        • Depend on how would you like to use your watch. Mine can easily last 55-60 hours.

          • +1

@ce5himm: I'm not a heavy user, i link it to my samsung phone and just read whatsapp messages

        • +1

My wife just puts hers on the wireless charger when she has a shower at night and put it back on when she goes to bed (maybe a hour later). It’s no biggy.

    • Old model, the active 2 for $20 is prob better with ECG etc.

      • Could you link this please?

  • Does this one allow you to answer and make calls from the watch?

  • Great price wife is happy with this from last deal.

  • Just missed!

  • Noooooooooo..

  • OOS

  • ahhhh. shouldn't use gift card…. OOS while i'm paying

  • Damn!!

  • ooo lucky i got mine

  • -2

Overrated. All these smart watches do is be a nuisance

    • My dad has been using it for sleep oxygen tracking, it diagnosed his sleep apnea luckily, now he has a CPAP and is going much better

      • Do you know what % oxygen levels indicated sleep apnea? Sometimes these watch sensors can be unreliable.

        • +2

His was getting very low, like 70%. He got a machine and now over 90% the whole time

        • But it gives you some info to then ask your doc about checking properly.
Same with the blood pressure readings.

          • @PVA: The oxygen sensor is far and away the least reliable

            • @Techie4066: I wonder if it got better after a year and a half of updates compared to that early video..

But I think any of these watches apple Samsung etc are just to give you some idea as to what’s going on.

  • LTE adds to an already atrocious battery life.
This is about all it’s worth.

    • +6

      turn it off then.

  • Missed again😭

  • $249 now :(

  • I just bought the black active 2 LTE version. Happy with this deal

    • Sorry, one or more of your items are unavailable for delivery and 1 hr drive to pick up :(

Edit: Got the active 2 non LTE for $91.99 shipped with perk

      • Dunno why you are all excited. I got the active 2 44mm for $70 over a year ago and its alreafy been retired

        • I thought $70 was the deal for Fitbit inspire 2 from my memory

          • +1

@Bii: Nah, was probably a price error but did the usualy waited for it to be delivered and when i checked again, the price was $300+

        • was the active 2 that bad

  • +1

What the! 🤯 I literally just made a spreadsheet off all the models and prices a couple hours ago, this def wasnt the price, I'm guessing pricing error 🤷🏾‍♂️ Interested to know if you guys get it.

    • +1

      Not an error, warehouse clearout

      • are you sure? 🤨 seem extremely strange that they would sell the 4G/LTE version less than the BT version… not to mention cheaper thn all the Watch3s as well.

Esp randomly at ~7pm, cuz they weren't like that in the afternoon (unless it was some afterdark special 🤷🏾‍♂️)

The Watch (1?) are this price, so the error kinda makes sense, cuz those technically say "… Watch 4…" in them 🤔 since they don't have a number, and it goes straight into the size.

        • …oh wait, I think i just answered my own question 😅 Maybe there is an issue with the LTE/4G version 🤷🏾‍♂️

          • @neezy: nah, still feels like an error. Surely the Watch3 LTE/4G version would have a similar (if not worse) issue 🤔

  • Dang it, missed. Good deal OP

  • +1

I was just chatting with someone an hour back about how I missed out this deal from a few days ago… What a co-incidence

  • Ofcourse I miss out, was reading on the previous 165 deal I missed a few days ago, JUST LAST NIGHT..

  • Is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 46mm value at $166? Is a watch 3-4 years of age now…

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/samsung-galaxy-watch-46mm…

    • +1

Probably not, but admittedly the battery life is significantly better than modern galaxy watches and the features are almost the same

    • no don't buy that

  • +2

Here's a link to all the Samsung watches at the moment - so many variations!!

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/search?query=watch4&page=1&hitsPer…

  • By selling this cheap it might impact the brand. But it also increases the number of users using a samsung wearable which in future they'll upgrade it for sure. By considering the build quality and camera on samsung galaxy s23 ultra they are getting close to Apple iPhone. Good competition for apple waiting for s24 ultra and I am enjoying my galaxy watch 4 received it yesterday (my first samrt watch)🥳, bought on the previous deal. Anyway thanks OP.

  • OP - Can I ask how you manage to get price alerts on JB Hifi/other Australian retailers?

  • Oh missed it!

  • Mine says shipped but no sign of any tracking number.

  • Any of the clearance ones worth getting as an upgrade from the S3 Frontier?

    • +1

I got the watch 4 to replace my S3 frontier which had a diminishing battery performance and inconsistent heart rate sensor

      What's not so great
      - Lack of bezel makes this for a slightly less fun/usable experience
      - I do not see much difference in step tracking, responsiveness of the watch
      - battery life with LTE on degrades fast but its a trade-off for this feature and will be similar on mor expensive watches.
      What's good
+ newer features like blood oxygen, ecg, body composition are nice to use and be familiar with

I am yet to try other apps and features, will be testing "LTE off" over the weekend to test how much of an improved battery life I get.
At $170, this is an acceptable upgrade, it would not give you a feeling of "completely new watch'

      • +1

Another observation which could be considered an issue by users familiar with bezel on the classic/frontier - the black touch bezel does look like empty space with a lot of watch faces, even on the dark background ones.

      • I still get good battery life with my samsung galaxy watch R805F

50% after 2 days with LTE on

  • +2

    received cancellation email :(
