An Eligible Merchant is a merchant whose merchant category code (“MCC”) is designated as:

    MCC 5541 (being Service Stations)
MCC 5542 (being Automated Fuel Dispensers)
MCC 5172 (being Petroleum and Petroleum Products)
    MCC 5983 (being Fuel Dealers).

NAB is not responsible for designating MCCs and has no control over the same. NAB is not responsible for providing you with any advice on whether a purchase made is/will be with an Eligible Merchant and/or regarding MCC codes.

So I guess try your luck and see if it sticks?

Your cashback will be credited to your NAB personal debit card or NAB personal credit card or NAB Now Pay Later (NNPL) account that was used to make the eligible purchase within 60 days of the end of the Offer Period.

Are they worried of returns :)

I just find that NAB can check purchase receipts at certain merchants. The Offer seems not exclude gift card purchase, though.

Fuel up before 31 May 2023

I make a gift card purchase at a fuel station.

    • Have you received the cashback?

  • +2

Does it work at 7/11? Good to stack with chopper

    • +1

it's a gamble, guaranteed ~$1 from HSBC cashback vs a possible $10 if your local 7-11 has the right merchant code. I think i might roll the dice.

    • 5541 – Service stations, like Circle K, 7-Eleven, and so on
      https://www.nationalmerchants.com/why-merchant-codes-matter/
Waiting for Ozbargainer to verify though

      • looks like an american site, may or may not apply here

      • hm… my CBA card doesn't show 7/11 fuel as MCC code but "transport"

      • it really depends on what the merchant/aquirer sends through to the scheme (visa/mc) so it is a bit of a dice roll

best bet is to go to a bp or something similar that would likely have the right setup

It was reported on the Hiver MCC thread last year:

      The only two caveats are:

      • I do not know how the EFTPOS terminal of your local 7-Eleven location selling fuel has been programmed. The only way to find out is to give it a go.
      • I am not even sure if EFTPOS cashout is possible at 7-Eleven locations selling fuel, but if it is, it should not use MCC 5541, because that is a transaction where you are obtaining cash (and cash-equivalent transactions are supposed to use very specific MCCs).
    • +1

tried, NAB app doesn't show MCC code either for 7/11 fuel

  • "One cashback per cardholder." Would we get 2 cashbacks if 2 separate cards were used but linked to same account?

    • ''Each customer is eligible for one $10 credit during the Offer Period.''

Does this work on Costco Fuel?

    • would like to know this as well

    • would like to know as well. Please post her if you have tried.

  • What does 'Payments made using EFTPOS will not be eligible for this offer' mean? How else can you pay with a credit card at a service station? Or are they simply stating the obvious fact that you won't get $10 back if you pay with a debt card/card linked to a savings account (i.e., not a credit card)?

    • +1

I think eftpos means when you press savings button while using your debit card and it is inserted into the terminal. If you just touch and pay then it would go via visa network(visa debit)

  • +1

Too confusing, where are these merchants???

  • -2

    From the T&C:

Offer does not apply if the transaction is made using another third-party establishment or payment processor to which your NAB personal debit card, NAB personal credit card or NNPL account is connected. This includes (but is not limited to) PayPal, AfterPay, Stripe or Shopify. Payments made using EFTPOS will not be eligible for this offer.

Uh.. right… How do I pay then using my credit card?

    • use your credit card

      • -1

At what type of payment terminal?

        • -1

          the one in the servo

          • -1

@[Deactivated]: oh you mean the EFTPOS machine gotcha

            • -2

@Jayblesz: nope, the credit card terminal

    • +2

Its a dumb naming convention but when they say eftpos they mean the payment type eftpos basically only in Australia and will only be considered an eftpos transaction if you insert your card and select cheque or savings, if you tap or pick credit it'll use either the visa, mastercard etc network https://www.eftposaustralia.com.au/

      • +2

        Nope.

I once visited an independent service station where their EFTPOS terminal was configured with merchant-choice routing, where the service station opted to route all contactless payments from physical dual-network debit cards through EFTPOS. That meant that when I tapped my physical dual-network debit card (which supported both Visa and EFTPOS), the payment was routed through the EFTPOS network. I have also seen this happen at my local car mechanic.

Coles has also switched on least-cost routing for physical dual-network debit cards supporting both Visa and EFTPOS, which means that Coles will choose to route a contactless payment through the card network that incurs the lowest processing fees. I have seen OzBargain comments before where this has been turned on at Liquorland and First Choice Liquor (two other Coles Group businesses), so there is a very good chance that Shell Coles Express (which is still operated by Coles Group, but not for much longer) has also implemented least-cost routing.

        • What if I insert the card and choose Credit? Is it Credit routing guaranteed?

          • +2

@Neoika: Yes, because you are choosing the network the payment is routed through.

Additionally, if you use a debit card stored on a mobile wallet:

            • If you can choose between EFTPOS and Visa/Mastercard, the payment will be processed through the payment network you choose on your device.

            • If you cannot choose between EFTPOS and Visa/Mastercard (e.g. ING debit cards), the payment will be routed through Visa/Mastercard.

  • For those asking on how do we know if fuel purchase at 7-11 or coles or wherever would be honoured, the classification for the business in my past transaction is "petrol station". So fairly confident, it will be fine. AIMO.

  • Finally a little something back from my NAB visa card….
If Westpac can do this big offers, NAB should be able to as well.

Doesn't look like need to activate anything?

  • I have multiple cards accounts so is offer for 1 per card or 1 per person?

    • Seems per person. As says person cardholder should be the person

Buy 711 gift card in store also fine as it will be used by same merchant.

  • Do they sell woolies gift cards at eg ampol?

    • +4

I don't think Woolworths Supermarkets gift cards are sold at EG Ampol, but on my last visit to EG Ampol yesterday, I saw WISH gift cards for sale (and Apple gift cards and Ultimate gift cards, amongst others).

  • In the post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/746313, there is describe:
Examples of stores that are categorised as MCC 5541 include, but are not limited to: 7/11, Ampol, BP, Shell, United

So popular large gas stations should be qualified.

    • +1

how do we find out if the specific 'Coles express' we fill petrol is eligible merchant or not

Honestly, the easiest way to find out is by using your NAB card and seeing whether you get cashback.

The MCC is something most financial institutions do not report directly to you, although a lot of them will report the category of a transaction, so you can get a good hint at the MCC to expect. Having said that, the MCC is something that could change at any time without notice.

I would be extremely surprised if a Shell Coles Express was not using MCC 5541 nor MCC 5542 for the purchase of fuel. The only situation I would expect a Shell Coles Express to change its MCC is if you ask to do an EFTPOS-cashout-only transaction.

If you have access to a digital TCN MCC-restricted gift card (e.g. Restaurant gift card, Grocery gift card), you could tap that first to see the MCC reported in the TCN app. However, you will probably confuse the heck out of the attendant when the card is declined and then you stare at your phone for a few seconds, so that may not be the best suggestion…

Btw, I would not ask the attendant what their MCC is, because they do not need to know the MCC of the EFTPOS terminal in order to operate it (and the associated POS system). I bet you any given attendant will have no clue what the MCC is set to be if you asked.

could we still use the 4c coupon on coles express and be eligible for this.

      It should be fine.

      • The cashback offer in this deal is offered by NAB. I would be extremely surprised if NAB could even tell whether you used a fuel discount offer at Shell Coles Express, and even if they could, I doubt they even care, because NAB does not fund any of the discount offers at Shell Coles Express. There is also nothing in the terms of the offer to state that you cannot use this cashback offer with any fuel discount offers.

      • The 4c/L fuel discount offer is offered by Shell Coles Express (either via Coles or Viva Energy). Shell Coles Express can see the type of card you are using, but I would be extremely surprised they would care you are using a NAB card, because Shell Coles Express is not even funding this offer.

TCN - The Fuel Gift Card.

Intentionally use a card that doesn't work to test MCC. What an idea!

        • Want to know as well for the detail related The Fuel Gift Card

          • @Bii: You can find it on card.gift website. I think use it with insufficient balance serves the same purpose.
