These prices are beyond a joke now & the so called half price specials .

    • +3

coles are absolute trash now…we used to spend easy $150 alone at coles per week & booze @liquorland. now zilch. (profanity) them

    • +8

Can't believe a packet of chips eg deli red rocks. Cost more than freshly cooked (small serving) of potato chips at local take away shop

    • +9

Yes i do laugh at the "lowered & locked" prices. Only because they upped them by 20+% this year and then lowered them 10%.

      • +2

Needs an ACCC crackdown I think - any claims of "price reduction" should be compared to the average daily price over 12 months minimum, not the ~3 weeks "new full price" it seems to currently require (assuming they're playing by the rules).

        • +4

ACCC and RBA are all run by useless overpaid Beaurocrats on exorbitant $300k+ or whatever wages.

They wouldnt know sh#t about inflation or these dodgy "half price sales". Either that or they are being paid off by these companies.

          • @metalhead: I suspect the donations to political parties and media ad spend have more to do with the inaction.

            Watch dogs are deliberately crippled.

Public - "Something must be done"
Business - "Nothing should be done"
            Politician - "Here's a lame, muzzled watchdog"

        • Woolworths did the exact same BS - raised prices then 'lowered' them. Total bullshit artists.
Inflation is 7% but many goods have gone up well over 20% some much more

          • @King Tightarse: Agree, it's a total piss take and noticed a lot of items have gone up more than 20-30%, more than inflation for sure. Best only to buy specials when half price, even if it is slightly more.

    • People need to stop posting these as deals and upvoting, it's a shame down votes will just get removed otherwise I definitely would

      • +8

I will continue posting the weekly half price specials, as some people find them useful.

eg. if you like Twinings tea, then it's useful to know that it's on special this week.

The key thing is not to be lured into the supermarket by the catalogue and start buying things that aren't on your shopping list.

        • went to coles to buy 1/2 price lavazza two weeks ago….of course = zero stock available.
i just left….did not spend a dollar. so sick of their 1/2 price specials that they never seem to have adequate stock of

          • +2

@franco cozzo: When sale items are out of stock, go to the service counter and ask for a raincheck. If they come back into stock within the next four weeks, you can use the raincheck form to buy at the sale price.

If there's something you want to stock up on, and you want more than Coles normally have on shelf at your store, there's no reason why you can't go to several Coles stores and get a raincheck at each of them.

            • @Russ: Good idea people forget about rainchecks at Coles. Chances are the items may be onthe next week or so at Woolworths anyway.

@OP, Thank you Very Much for posting :)

Half price rice was full price rice a year ago.

    • We bought some half-price Rice about 2-weeks ago, short-grain, not the usual brand, some fancy Japanese name, claimed it's as good as jasmine rice.
As it turns out, it was SunRice brand, made in Vietname, dunno how they get a Japanese name.
While cooking, has not aroma at all, definitely cant compare to jasmine rice.
Besides that, the texture is acceptable.
Guess we wont buy any more fancy rice in future.

      • Fancy and half price? lol

      • I always buy rice from indian grocery store. Aged long grain basmati rice is the best. "India Gate" and "Daawat" are two reputable brands. These brands have premium, regular and budget varieties. I use "Daawat Everyday".

        • Where do you buy them from?
Do they have it in Brisbane?

    • Anyone know what Aldi rice or a decent equivalent is per kg?

    • Definitely get some jasmine rice from your local Asian grocer if possible, as it will be fresher and better quality than SunRice - for a similar price.

    • 5kg rice used to be $8 half price for a long time.
Too much price gouging along with the inflation when everything suddenly went up 20-30%>

  • Still waiting for the next halo top 1/2 price…

  • +1

The rice used to be $6

  • Pepsi, Solo or Schweppes Soft Drink 10x375mL or Bubly Sparkling Water 8x375mL $15.00 $7.50 each $7.50 50%

Hehe I find the 50% off price ridiculous Imagine what I think of RRP :)

Why is Sanitarium Up&Go cheaper in Vic?

    • +6

They don't have a container deposit scheme yet?

  • +2

Thanks for the heads up OP. Need to replenish my jasmine rice very soon. Perfect timing. 👍

  • Yay, it's breakfast cereal week

  • Just check the rice before taking it home - mine had moths in it …

  • +3

On behalf of all of us here on OzBargain, I’d like to publicly thank Coles for heavily discounting so many of their quality products. They could entice us with 5% off, but they don’t stop there. They could wow us with 10% off, but they’re generous to a fault. I don’t know how they don’t go bankrupt basically giving away so much stuff at 50% off!

    • +2

And it's often the same companies that regularly give their products away at 50% off - they are truly modern heroes for running at a loss to support the Australian public!

  • +1

i swore those smiths chips only recently got jacked to $2.35, now they're $2.40.

    • +1

      smiths - 170g $4.80
      aldi crinkle cut - 230g $2.39

60g or over 30% more for half the price and i swear theyre the same or better than smiths which is an average product at best

the chip/snackfood'opolys & coles/woolies are truly taking the piss…its (profanity) seasoned potato cooked in oil ffs, not a luxury item!

      • +1

and it's an even worse $/kg for those 150g "special editions." i don't bother with smiths much unless i'm desperate.

sometimes it feels like everything that isn't bread and water is priced like a luxury.

        • +1

acually have you seen the price of bread lately?
some woolies loaves have gone up 60% or more in the last 12 mths!

and re: chips per kg…i can buy fine parma prosciutto for less money!! wtf???

          • +1

@franco cozzo: i only buy the lowest tier wholemeal bread and not regularly, so i don't track it as hard as some of the other stuff on my list. but yeah sure enough, up up prices are up. fml.

thank (profanity) for markdowns. basically live off them..

ninja edit: prosciutto is definitely more nutritious than chips!

            • +2

@tdw: I'd also buy the $1.70 (680g) wholemeals from ColesWorths. That was the 2020 price. Sometime in 2021, up to $1.90.
              Then last year, $2.20.
As of a few weeks ago, $2.70.

Note this happens at both supermarkets. So, price fixing or price matching?

              • @Speckled Jim: they honestly can't expect consumers to keep swallowing their inflation lies forever

          • +1

            @franco cozzo: Make your own.
But seriously they are taking the piss for most stuff now, can't all be inflation or covid tax.

Better off having rice that bread but I don't mind the free bread in the work fridge for toast.

Anyway pays to get stuff when half price even if it's been jacked

  • Don't buy the Cheezel crackers, they are absolutely foul. Way too thick and turns into a mush inside your mouth.
