I always find it interesting when people recommend Apple products on an Android device or Android products on an Apple device…. To me they are separate. If I'm looking for an ipad, I'll buy an ipad, if I'm looking for a Windows tablet or a ChromeOS tablet, then I'm not looking for an Android tablet. For someone who is deep into the Android ecosystem and looking for a high end Android tablet, especially with native Android, it's hard to beat this. It's likely overkill for many, and for many others, they'll be happier with an ipad or something else entirely.

To answer whether this is a good price, it appears to be the best price you can preorder this for now without a student email. Yes I believe it's a good price, a deal even, but there are many other tablets that might suit your needs for a higher or lower price.

This tablet is mid-range at best. Its just expensive because it comes with a dock.

        • +3

Mid-range??? This tablet can go up to 60hz! Nobody needs it that fast.

          • +2

            @askbargain: …just like every non-Pro iPad

            • @Techie4066: so how high end is this high end tablet?

              • +2

@askbargain: Not. It's a smart hub that doubles as a tablet. That would've been super useful for my grandparents to dictate things and have a photo frame.

Personally I'm waiting for first hand reviews before I make a decision.

Also interested to see what Samsung will be offering with their Tab S9 Range later this year.

      • i watched youtube video on this product but looks like netflix home screen loading is very slow and others as well.

Does this really beat other android tablet??

The google own chipset is better than recent snapdragon chips?

      • +1

I think if you want a high end tablet then it’s better to use the Apple refurbished store for an iPad Pro. $800 for this screen is a hard decline.

        • Yeah or preferably the S8 ultra.

Totally agree with you on this. Not sure why people are downvoting you. Some people are not biased or Eco locked. I have been using an ipad 5 since 2017? and it still receives updates and I have Googlified it with all google apps running on it. It does not feel Applish even for a moment. Still feels supersmooth except it closes apps due to lack of RAM.

  • +11

    Still overpriced.

  • +3

I'd be interested if they didn't force you to buy the dock as well. No need for it, so no point buying.

    • Charging dock is included

      • -1

That's my point. It costs more because it includes something I'll never use. Ymmv of course but not for me.

    • +1

Why would you ever buy this thing if you didn't intend to use it with the dock? I think the docks valued at $200 so you are paying $600 (This is working back from the $800 discounted price) for the tablet (if you could ever buy it without the dock). You can buy an Ipad for the same price and it'de be a lot better.

This tablets worth $300 tops (without dock)

Good for Google Home, bad for a tablet even at this price

    • For Google Home you can get Nest Hub at around $50 which is more than enough for google home stuff

      • I totally agree that just for "Google Home", it's too expensive. But for that, you should really compare it to Nest Hub Max (not Nest Hub) which with discounts you can get for around $200-$250.

  • +7

this has to be a joke, $600 max

    • Give it a couple of months haha

  • The usual consensus, as it goes, is 'android tablet bad'

    • Pixel C was great.

      Pixel Slate was amazing.

      • +2

The argument against them was always app optimisation.

I'm still rocking my Samsung Galaxy Tab S1 (from… 2014?) Original battery is still OK (less than 3 hours screen on time) and I use it for YouTube only. And YouTube runs fine.

If that's what you use it for, then it's fine. If you want to use other apps from the PlayStore, you might have to deal with unoptimised apps that look 'ugly' on a big screen. Totally not an issue for me, i like tablets, android or not.

        • Hey mate its 2023.

          • +3

            @Spendmore: I know.

I left it too late to sell it, now it's basically too old to be sold, and still works with no OLED issues or anything. Who wants to buy this now, I'll just have to use it till ti dies somehow…

I still remember the time i first saw it in the shop and telling myself that i must get THIS tablet. And later in the year I had a really good chance, so i got it. Still very good for movies. 2k OLED screen, stereo speakers - definitely ahead for its time, and it has Samsung's multi-window (two apps at once) when it wasn't part of Android - added bonus to use up the screen realestate.

Honestly wish it broke already. Don't want to just dump it or let it sit collecting dust.

          • @Spendmore: Prove it

        • I can't remember which Samsung high end I bought but it was brilliant until my kids trashed it

      • +3

        I still have a Nexus 10 😬

    • +1

Well, it's more a case of value for money for me. If it were $500 I'd consider it. But $800 is just too much for a mid-range tablet, even with the added Google Home functionality. A mid range tablet can be had for around $400. At $800 I'd be looking at an iPad, which would be more powerful and have a bigger app catalogue.

  • +3

    My best offer is $500

  • +2

For this price, you have to take on board a lot of risks and early bird with this.

Even with an android phone, id still get an ipad due to its app store being far more developed, the specs are many times better. The battery life is a question mark, but I'm willing to bet the ipad is going to be far better, with a far longer usable life from it.

To the other comment saying if you are buying in to an ecosystem….. i dont think this has a spot either.

As i mentioned, the ipad is cheaper, and better.
The windows one well youd want to have that sure. Android? Tablets were thrown away by google after android… 6? The holo one. A long time.

This is the first time its back. You have googles own inhouse apps just updated, 50. After that, you have phone apps with varying degrees of well working-ness to them.

What are you getting a high end android tablet for? Video editing? Nope it isnt powerful enough for that.

Most samsung tablets are far better.

So that leaves what else you get.

The speaker dock needs to be better than an nest audio (which are sub $100), and the Bluetooth ones, which are also sub 100.

edit this preorder is for a month in advance too! Geez.

    • Samsung tablets are android though?

      • +2

Yes they are, but they have put a lot of work on top of their interface - for example, they had split screen years before it coming out potentially in Android 14. While the apps themselves still arn't suited, the UI is suited for a tablet form factor.

Then there is the point that Samsung has tablets cheaper and mostly better, around the same price and far, far better (specs and 120hz)

  • +2

Google's RRP for this tablet is way too high IMHO, However, If you do not need pixel buds you might be better off purchasing from Google directly, esp for someone who already has Google One - a high-tier data subscription that will give a further 10% back as google one credit.
    In Google Store

$899 - 215 (google store credit promotion on pre-order) + $89 (Google One credit if you are on a 2TB Plan -10% back as Google credit)
If you have Amex and you are targeted with a Google Spend $299 and get $50 back - will make the purchase even better.
