    • They're not great with sharing

Buy one and be a good parent and teach them to share.

Buying 2 is ridiculous and would be spoiling them.

      • +1

        Thanks for parenting advice.

    • How about a couple Nintendo DS, or 3DS. You can even mod these easy enough for bypassing the need to purchase games and being Nintendo the classics still hold up.

      • I've been experimenting with a couple of cheap retro handheld consoles with the kids and they seem to be enjoying it. But I find that it can be a bit fiddly to operate (e.g., different consoles need different settings etc) - not as simple as switch on and play.

        • Kids will learn. That's how we learnt back in the day. We can't let them get too lazy lol

    • +3

I think the value of them being able to play together (and with the family) on a shared switch hooked up to the tv should not be understated, instead of them off doing their own thing on their own switch lites.
My brother and i also have a 2 year gap and grew up playing coop games together since we were kids (and we still do as adults) and i reckon it's a huge part of why we are still close 30+ years later!

      • That's what I'm thinking too. Both of them are very close to each other - literally can't live without one another but also have sibling fights every now and then.

        Appreciate your $0.02.

    • +4

I got an OLED model for my family at Christmas and don't regret it at all.

My two kids are 8 and 11 and having the OLED model means we can all play together, and they can learn to co-operate or compete in various games whilst I get to supervise or join in.

I'd recommend Untitled Goose Game as a great intro game for two players at a time, with lots of laughs.

Get an extra set of controllers and up to 4 people can play on the TV at once, with games like Mario Kart, Mario 3D World, Bomberman, etc.

The OLED model allows gaming to be much more social and then you can also use it handheld when the kids are in bed and your partner wants to watch trash on the TV… Not speaking from experience or anything.

Also, make sure to check out Deku Deals, to be notified when games go on sale.

      • Thank you! Very helpful.

I'm looking at the OLED with Pokemon Legends Arceus Bundle: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334340198863

What else should I get as a "Switch starter pack" for a family of 4 to enjoy?
An extra Pro Controller or another pair of Joy-Cons? Anything else?

      • +3

I'd definitely recommend a second set of joy cons so you can have up to 3-4 players.

Maybe hold off on the pro controller to start, as the Switch comes with a joy con grip that you might be happy with, at least until you get a sense of how much you'd use the pro controller. My kids use the joy cons comfortably, and I play mostly handheld when by myself, so haven't bought a Pro Controller yet.

Get a microSD card when you see a good deal, to allow you to save more digital games bought online. The switch has 64GB of storage, which should last you a while for most games, but I think the new Zelda game would use a quarter of that, for example.

Have a look at Nintendo Switch Online to see if there is content you would use. The yearly subscription isn't bad value to access a big range of content from previous Nintendo generations, plus cloud saving, although I don't think it's nearly as cheap as offerings on the other platforms.

        • +1

Thanks LC. Your comment got me over the line with the OLED model.

      • +1

In addition to what lambchop said.

I'll add screen protector to the list. As for micro sd card, I would recommend 128GB during a sale. They go for around $20. Get a samsung v30 speed and you can repurpose it on other devices such as camera or drone or gopro.

Nintendo switch online, possibly look into classified since its a lot cheaper to join a "family" of 8. Works out to under $14/year for NSO + Expansion.

As for games, can't go wrong with mario kart.

    • +1

Switch joycon controllers are shithouse reliability. I wouldnt want them integrated into the console.

  • Missed that.

  • +3

Got one - thx OP. Now for the Zelda TotK pro controller

  • +1

Still available (with the game) for $501.5 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/325616906012

    • +2

      Got one!

Stacked that with shopback + GC from Woolies

    • +1

This is the bundle I got! Happy with the price. Can't wait to start playing next week!

  • Back to stock. I got the bundle with the game for nothing!!

    • +1

      For nothing?

      • I mean, I already have a Collectors Edition in the mail. I did not need that.

    • +2

Same boat here lol. I probably just need spend a bit more effort on reselling the game. Pretty sure i can sell it in 60 very easily.

  • +1

    Thanks OP!

  • +4

Got sucked in on impulse in the end but just got the plain white model - thanks for posting op.

I guess I can sell my very good condition V2 switch for ~250-300?

  • +3

Boooo I got weak late in the day, ya got me!
Hopefully sell the old one to cover some cost.

  • Do I need a wireless Pro controller if I use it as a docked console and play it on my TV? Or is it a better one than the default one?

Sorry never had a Switch before…

    • +2

Joycons are OK, There is an adaptor thingy that they slide into to form a regular format controller. Can see how it goes before you spend more.

      I've ordered an 8bitdo Pro 2 for $59 - https://www.amazon.com.au/8BitDo-Pro-Bluetooth-gamepad-Black…

      • 8bitdo Pro 2 is fantastic. It's what I've been using for TOTK when docked. I prefer it to my Pro Controller.
I mapped one of the back buttons to run, very handy.
The only downside is it won't wake your Switch from sleep. So you need to press the power button on the console itself, then turn on the controller.

    • +1

It's much, much better than the default joycon/grip.

      Would definitely recommend.

  • Love it! Enjoy everyone

Old model, Nintendo Switch Neon Joy-Con Console with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe & 3 Months Online $378.26, I think if you only play on TV, doesn't matter.

  • Decided to try it out before I buy. Splatoon 3 on PS controller works perfectly.
People are actually coming back to the emulators… Only if you are always playing docked anyway.

  • Just signed up for EBPlus trial. Anyone getting the "This code can't be applied to your order." error ?

  • +3

I just went a bit nuts and bought the switch OLED with the extra new Zelda game then I got a used copy of the previous Zelda game. On top of that I got the ring fit game and also the puma gaming seat which is also on sale at the games men.

    https://www.gamesmen.com.au/playseat-puma-e-sport-gaming-sea…

The eBay code brings the gaming seat down as well.

  • +2

Sweet! Glad I waited. Though I was tempted to wait further for another $370 OLED deal like the Splatoon one.

Not sure about the 10% Shopback cause it only said 4% for me. But I got a referral code and saved another $10 along with the 4%. And a free trial eBay plus membership to get the Switch super discounted. So it’s cost me about $413 and my time in signing up to all these things to get the Zelda Switch. Can’t wait cause I love Tears of the Kingdom and my current day one switch has some issues with the micro sd slot.

    Thanks OP!

    • The 10% was only until 3pm but don't sweat it you still bought fine, I used my 10% max cashback on the game. Also give it was only $20 it was only ever really 5% ish on the console ;)

      • I hope you enjoy the game :)

  • I'm tempted but looking at eBay, selling an OG switch doesn't fetch much, even with a game included.

    • If your Switch is old enough it may be worth hanging on to and experimenting with cfw (ie "hacking" it). It's what I'll be doing with my 2017 model.

      • It's old enough to be patched but it has firmware 16.0.3. Is this an issue?

        • Sorry mate wouldn't have a clue, will only be fiddling with mine after I get the new console.

  • I could naht resist I could naht

  • Anyone had their shopback track yet from the initial stock pool while CB was 10 per cent?

    • +1

      Nope not tracked yet.

The click activity page in the app says it takes up to 2 days to track.

    • Mine was this morning

      • Thanks mate for the update.

I just checked mine and it’s now tracked.

I used a Westpac credit card and have another $10.15 as bonus.

So all up I got $30.15 off $501.5 switch and game bundle. Pretty stoked.

        • You should have stacked that with GC from Woolies for an extra $40 bucks discount!

  • +1

I ordered one, I know Switch 2/Pro is due any time now, but YOLO. I have a modded gen 1 Switch but I gotta live the OLED life.

  • Wow delivered already in Melbourne. Top stuff Gamesmen!

    • Wow that’s so quick! Is the wee warehouse in Melbourne?

I’m in Sydney and eBay status hasn’t updated to shipped….

      • +1

I ordered the standard white model not the TOTK bundle, perhaps that made a difference. Not a fan of the look of the TOTK skin - prefer a more plain, muted appearance.

  • 533 sold. Lol

    • I got one too. I wonder if this is going to significantly delay delivery. Or even have some cancelled.

  • +1

    Ordered yesterday afternoon, delivered today.

  • Ahh so I caved and bought this. Why am I so weak? Going to sell my OG switch to cover some of the cost

  • OOS

  • +1
