      • I think the key part people are annoyed about is the fact this used to be allowed (and encouraged by Netflix on their own Twitter account so I wouldn't call it a loophole per se) and then they pulled a switcheroo and changed their mind and now want to charge "additional fees" by slightly adjusting terminology like "screens" and "households"

        • +1

Well that's a business decision that will either succeed or fail. They aren't doing anything wrong.

Also doubt the intention was ever to allow endless sharing among extended family and friends.

          • @Brianqpr: I agree. Majority of people moaning are those that are getting it for free currently, so they're not lost paying customers if they leave. Yes there are some who got it to split the cost, but Netflix would just need 1 in 4 or so to remain to break even roughly. To me it sounds like reasonable business sense, it reduces the traffic for those remaining as well.

            • @aaronaldo: More likely need >2 to remain, don't think most would pay for premium if couldn't share.

  • Beats paying $18/month for mum to have an account of her own.

Just soooo many other options — Stan, Paramount, Apple, Disney+, Binge, Prime, 123Movies, etc.
Every time Netflix puts their prices up or adds more restrictions like this, we're finding more and more impetus to ditch them for the competition.

    • +3

Or ditch everyone for torrent 👍🏻

  • +1

Streamio /w Torrentio (faster and more user friendly than Kodi/Seren) and you'll be all sweet ;)

    • Wow man I never even heard of this before. Just installed it on my tv and now I have access to anything I can think of… it works like charm. Thank you!!

  • I mean, I can always go back to sailing the high seas.

  • I want federal government to step into this calamity. They need to recall US ambassador to punish netflix and reprimand him

  • +2

It's rather amusing that Netflix were pretty much responsible for a massive decline in pirating.

With these changes, Netflix will now largely be responsible for bringing back pirating again…

    • exactly what I was thinking

  • Where is the option where I setup VPN between the houses, route all Netflix traffic via my primary location?

  • Poll need one more option

"Pay $96 to family member so I can continue using their account."

I couldn't justify get my own plan. I already have Prime.

As the restrictions started yet? I haven't seen it come up from my TV (via Chromecast), so I haven't had to discuss with the account holder yet. Maybe they already have paid the $8 a month on my behalf. Or maybe we haven't been using it at the same time yet..

Otherwise, may subscribe to standard plan for a month at a time every 3-4 months like we do with Disney+

    • +1

The restrictions appeared on my account on Saturday with GTV

  • +1

Who gets to pay the $8? would be better if the additional person can pay it directly rather than the main account slugged with it

    • +1

Of course the main account holder would be responsible to pay it.

The additional person could give it directly to the account holder should they wish.

  • +7

The solution is to be irate* and use an alternative streaming product that doesn't have these limitations or cost quite so much.

    *oops, missed a p

I'm going to sign up for Foxtel instead.

  • +8

I haven't torrented for around 8 years. I have now set up a Plex server and enjoying that life again.

    • what was you total cost of doing this setup?

      • I had an Optiplex laying around, so free. I downloaded a "Free" version of Plex Mobile for streaming also.

        Linus does a nice video.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKDSld-CrHU

I am looking to run this on a NAS in the future.

        • Thanks for the vid link.
There's so many different tools I genuinely get confused on which one to install and what device to use. Then there is the question of where to find the streaming content.

  • Cancelled some time ago and never looked back. I now have a rolling subscription between one service at a time for few months and is more than enough for that little time I have for tele.

  • I am trying the Standard with ads*: AU$6.99 / month from next month.

If the Ads are too annoying I will try the next tier Basic: AU$10.99 / month which is actually worse quality than the Ads option at only 720p and one stream whereas Ads option is 1080p and 2 streams.

Wonder which idiots dream up these options.Pay more and get less??

    • +1

You might pay less for the ads version, but Netflix will get paid more due to the ads you watch.. I guess that's the premise here?

      • I actually don't mind them offering ad supported models, as long as the ads aren't too bad. I watch sbs all the time and sometimes the ad is good for a snack break and just to rest the eyes for a bit

    • I've changed to the ad supported plan too. Hopefully there aren't too many ads.

I think the 720p plan is meant for viewing on smaller screens like tablets or phones.

  • I don't get the angst. Password sharing? What is this a porn site from the early 2000s?

Well I guess Netflix should have said no at the start rather than now.

    • What angst, most of the commentary is just people explaining how they will react as consumers. A business adjusts the value proposition and consumers re-evaluate their needs.

  • Is there OzBargain up-to-date Netflix Turkey guide?
    Might give it a shot.

    • read the netflix turkey thread looks like there are now issues for new signups

  • cancelled today. never used it personally, just kept it around for parents who I was sharing with.

  • This would be pretty funny if their next company call they had to say that more people have unsubscribed from Netflix than has joined since forcing the password sharing scheme. But, I doubt this will happen. It would be very funny though.

  • +1

I'll kick people off. Glad profiles can be transferred off. I already move my Dad to Turkey.

    • Any good up-to-date guides on relocation to Turkey?

  • Looks like its time to put the old hat and eye patch back on.

    • I can recommend r/piracy. much easy now, then back in the day.

  • Cancelled ours. The math didn't seem worth it and maybe it will save my brain from another season of selling sunset.

  • IPTV all the way. Cancelled all my legit streaming services. Streaming services content seems to get worse as their prices increase. With IPTV, at least you get a full access to everything for one convenient price.

    • +2

any IPTV recommendations, it's been a while

    • +2

Yep my IPTV sub has a Plex addon for $5 and contains absolutely everything I could ever want, only had netflix as am sharing with 2 parents and 4 siblings (via Turkey of course) once we are blocked off I will cancel netflix and just watch the Plex is is what we watch 90% of the time anyway.

      • +1

Can you recommend a good IPTV Sub?

  • How do they know if you share your password with someone?

    • quite simply the devices are accessing from different IP addresses so it's assumed

      • Doesn't seem like a good solution, as IP addresses change. Some providers keep changing peoples' public IP addresses. It could mess with those who are not password sharing too.

        • +1

plenty of info around netflix will ask the user to verify the device essentially on the home network / ip address once per month, I think it may also require additional devices to do the same, they may make exceptions as yes what about smart phones which use a telcom network not nbn etc but it'll become a lot harder & the ip address location I assume will be recorded so if not turkey etc then there will be issues

  • +2

    Cancelled Netflix…

I still have Disney+ and Prime though.. Prime is useful for shipping, and it's comparatively cheap.

Disney+ has a pretty extensive library of things I like and currently can share with the family without issues. If they crack down on sharing like Netflix do, probably ditch them as well.

That being said I have a dell mini pc running with sonarr/radarr/transmission already, but there's something to be said for convenience sometimes..

  • I still am not affected, managed to watch the Anna Nicole Smith doco last night, was appropriately miserable despite being quite decent

  • -1

Need an option in poll for Tailscale or having a device that connects once per month like a Firestick

  • I got the email a week ago but people still watching from different locations on one account. Any idea why?

    • Probably just giving people a grace period to make a move with either transferring their profile out/or to an extra member. It ain’t over until the fat lady sings.

  • Has anyone actually had any external account holders cut off yet? I confirmed my household within a day of the new restrictions but none has complained yet.

    • In the same boat.
Holding off until officially frozen out before I decide what I'm going to do.

    • I got my auntie to confirm me as a member of her household twice , after 3 hours I got kicked out each time

  • Just read this through properly. So not only do I have to pay for another household for them to continue watching, but they need to create a new account and then move over their profile. That's not intuitive for my elderly family members, and doesn't support seamless viewing across their household and mine. EG when they come to visit.

    • What does 'im travelling' do?

      • Brings up a screen where you can request an access code that gets sent to the account holders email or mobile number for temporary access. Doing this will also kick off the account holders household

  • Just cancelled mine. I was paying extra to share it. Now they get nothing.

    Hey everyone,

So I've been reading this thread and I haven't seen anyone post this suggestion.

I created a new email address and shared it with my Netflix 'family', and conveniently I made that email password the same as the netflix password. My 'family' just adds the email account to their phone app, and each time the netflix household changes…. they can each confirm the change.

    • That doesn't work as you can only do it a certain amount of times in the month.

  • Okay so I figured a way around it from now.

    Joined up with my parents.
Made their home the primary household.
My two TV's are connected through a Google TV.
So went over there and logged into Netflix through their wifi on both devices.

Came home and able to use Netflix at my home too.

We've just got the $10.99 account which is only 1 screen at a time but should be enough as we also have other subscription services.

So only pay $5.50 each per month.

    • We've just got the $10.99 account

You're doing it wrong… Should be going via Turkey/Argentina and you'd get the top plan for that price

      • I looked into that.

        Seemed far too complicated.
I'd rather do my way less hassle and basically the same outcome.

  • Time to investigate AppleTV and Paramount, as they both have some compelling offers at the moment, and whilst Netflix has a lot of content, most of the newer stuff is not as inspiring as it once was. Also SBS has a massive library of free movies which i need to catch up on.
Netflix - no competition any more.
