The second they refresh this for AV1 (and hopefully 4k120 or 8k120 output), it's the easiest recommendation. Until then, Amazon Firestick 4K Max is still worth it on sale despite the mild frustrations it has with casting and app selection out of the box.

    • -2

the biggest issue is the 8GB is not enough nowadays..

    • +10

What content are you watching thats 120fps and what are you watching thats 8K regardless of frame rate?

      • It will be worth it in 10 years!

      • -3

Live sports and gaming content is moving over to 120 FPS, cloud gaming content is already beyond there, albeit the latter at lower resolutions currently. 8K video exists and is coming through too.

Do you like a hardware ecosystem that has you buying a new smart box device every 3 years because they couldn't be bothered unlocking firmware features and providing a HDMI 2.1 port with enough bandwidth and DSC support?

The necessary hardware has existed for over 3 years. It's in some of these devices, but they're held back by port choices.

        • -1

gaming content sure, but youre not playing it over a chromecast. cloud gaming high frame rate is pointless if youre ping is like 200 and your tick rate is like 10.

yes there are cameras that film at 8k, even 12k but they are not rendered at that quality because the files would be hundreds of gigs in size, yes you could probably get that file size smaller but theyre probably on shitty camera's that dont have high dynamic range or high bit rate, good 1080p cinema cameras look better than an iphone filming in 4k.

if you look at any blockbuster movie, Avatar 2 for example has a digital intermediate of only 4k. so while something might be available at 8k its probably 1080 or 4k content upscaled for 8k tv's basically no one has.

          • -3

@skjb93: YouTube has 8K content today, that's a big part of why they've scaled up AV1 since 2020. Alongside our less sparse terrestrial TV network than most developed countries, HEVC licencing has been holding back 4K for quite a while here, and is holding back >60 FPS content everywhere.

As for the rest of your over-simplified spiel about technology, I'll run through it quickly:

            • yup we've had the cameras for a while, the masters will be used to make 8K/16K edits when the time is right economically, there are numerous lossless compression technologies to assist with professional storage
            • yes, a good image sensor paired with a good lens will beat an inferior combination of a higher resolution, but there's plenty of fantastic 4K/8K/16K cameras today for professional production, and yes they have HDR… but basing validity of content standards on the basis of what most people have sitting on the outside of their phones? That ain't it.
            • cloud gaming is not all about competitive gaming, the ping is typically 15-25 ms for metro users and the tick rate is far beyond 10… xcloud tech has predictive tech behind it too, of course you should expect the chromecast to deliver the video for this… it's just high bitrate video for the given codec and AV1 lowers that number
            • Avatar 2 is its own beast because it is 48 FPS HFR and even a variable frame rate in that many scenes just have doubled frames (i.e 24 FPS effective), though it's a strange choice given all codecs support variable frame rates
            • compression tech already using machine learning and other optimisation techniques to deliver content for half the bitrate you might otherwise expect, YouTube and Netflix have been doing this since 2017, and it really hit its straps in 2019… this is coming through to consumers over the next few months
            • decoders will also be using machine learning so that the end to end data transmission is minimised as much as possible, the hardware is already in TVs and software deployment will be appearing more and more over the next 18 months

What's startling is that we have SoCs like the Amlogic S905X4, which released at the end of 2019 and is capable of 4K120 AV1 but no one is yet to stitch it together with a HDMI 2.1 output, and I have to have some random internet user who plays Valorant or CSGO and think they understand internet traffic argue with me about the validity or fact of its existence.

Child please: use Google/ChatGPT/whatever, ask well-rounded questions, learn

            • @jasswolf: good luck trying to buy a 60$ product and expect it to provide a tech or content that wont exist or available for 5 or 10 years because the infrastructure wont exist and no one will have the hardware that can use it.

its the equivalent of people sayign 4k dvd's are equal to 4k netflix movies.

sure have your MKBHD 8k videos of him reviewing the iphone 17 when its compressed to shit and looks worse than the blu ray version of a movie from 2010 but more pixels must equal more better.

              • -1

@skjb93: You keep setting the bar lower and lower in terms of intelligent discussion. I'm not talking about fantasy, I'm talking about flexible and scalable technology solutions that exist in current devices, and in finalised software deployments.

I don't give a shit what Marques Brownlee is doing, he is more creative than technologist, and is beholden to YouTube's strategy and compression choices at any given moment, which is an ever-developing thing anyway. Not relevant to what I'm saying beyond highlighting that 8K video streaming exists, and it's silly to compare that to lossless 4K instead of 4K video streaming services.

AV1 is important, HFR120 is important for live and documentary/news content, 8K is important to current TV sizings, and 16K will also be important in a different way. AV2 will be finalised this year which takes a lot of what I'm discussing here and bakes it into a codec and extends things into genuine h.266 competitive spaces and beyond.

In terms of available solutions, check out NVCodec SDK 12.1 (specifically CABR), check out NVIDIA Maxine, read up on LCEVC. I'm not going to be replying further because it's genuinely a waste of my time.

              • @skjb93: you have no idea what av1 is do you

      • +2

His main point was AV1. You just focused on what he put in brackets which would have been a bonus anyways.

        • He goes on about it in every Chromecast post. Just go and buy whatever device supports av1 and be done with it, or use a PC. It's not very popular or necessary and most people don't care or need it. The codec takes more power, device would get hotter etc.

Also 8k has been around for ages but hasn't exactly taken off, don't know many people that would spend 3x as much for a TV and not much content. 4k still fine.

      • +1

Most people just get sucked in to YouTube Reviewer's stories and Benchmarks, ignoring the real life use cases and how a product actually performs in day to day use.

    • Are AV1 videos are thing right now?

      • -1

Yes, all over YouTube and Netflix, Vimeo and Meta have some support, Amazon Web Services support it and offer AV1 transcoding, but not sure if it's on Prime yet.

  • +1

    they need a site-wide % off been a while

  • +3

this may be slower than the 4k max from Amazon, but I love the stock feel of it all, especially the underrated "apps only mode"

    • +1

If you like 'apps only mode' you should try projectivy launcher and set as default.

  • Can you cast Google photos through this to a Samsung Q85B TV?

    • +8

TV model irrelevant, will work on any HDMI port.

      • Thanks! Is there any other way to cast Google photos to the TV?

        • SmartThings App to your Samsung TV

  • i have the older HD model and FHD tv, stream movies from my server via plex app.
    i have a question:

if i buy new 4k TV and still use the old chromecast with gg tv HD, meaning all my 4k movies will be on FHD only?
(but the movies are in 4k format.)

    • Correct - If you have a CCWGTV-HD, it cannot stream higher than FHD 1080p - even if plugged into a 4k TV.
The original CCWGTV can though, becuase it came out with 4k capability as default.

Although your question is kinda confusing as the older one is actually the 4k one. The HD one was released much more recently.

      • huh… hmm let me check the box tomorrow.. now im not sure which model i have, but for sure mine isnt the 4K model, bought in 2021

        • +1

          This link should help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromecast#:~:text=In%20Septem…

            @Arcticfox: edit. found the box.
on one side i can see HD, 4K and HDR
enjoy crystal clear picture up to 4K and with HDR.
            what???
i see the model number, its GA01919-AU
            https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/google-chromecast-with-google…

wow lucky i checked before buying this tomorrow

            • @CyberMurning: Yep - so you have the 4k one ;-)

If you buy a 4k TV then it will stream 4k to it no problem.

              • @Arcticfox: how about the very first gen i also have it. wiki doesnt say what resolution it supported.
can i plug it to a tv, open plex on my mobile/tablet, pick a 4K movie then cast it to a 4K tv?

edit found it is 1080 max

                • @CyberMurning: Yeah I have the first one too, its like a fat usb stick, round at one end.
I could only play 720p without issues. Trying 1080p and it would be very unstable.

  • +4

Bought the 4K at release time from Google directly at full price

No problems so far. Been working great on now dumb, old smart TVs

    • mine broke down after 2 years. but OG chromecast still working after 10 years.

    • Same, love it! Better than any standard TV ecosystem, have on both my TVs now

  • +3

  • +1

    Thanks, purchased

  • +1

    Thanks op 🙂 purchased

  • OOS

  • bought thanks

  • oh dam , Missed out. Will there be another drop like this? :(

  • Thanks OP got it for $54, Will try to see if still can get Cashback as I didn’t do it through the cashrewards website.

  • Will there be more 4K Chromecast's?

    • Just subscribe to the Google Chromecast 4K on ozbargain and you’ll get an email when someone posts a deal for it. I don’t think anyone knows apart from EBay itself if there’ll be more 4K Chromecasts.

      • Done. Thanks for the tip :)

  • Been running a 4K Chromecast for a while and find it OK, but a little unresponsive with an overblown UI. I really only use it to get to Stan/Youtube/Plex.

Do people run these devices stock or are there worthwhile tweaks/mods to make the experience better?

    • Stock.. although heard of someone loading a different UI in another thread. Mine is fast/responsive, maybe try a reboot. Can also lower the animation time in developer options.
