Something to use my commbank $5 off $100

    • +2

The commback offer excludes voucher codes, gift cards and coupon deals. So may not work. Other Ozbargainers can confirm.

      • The unconfirmed trick I do is: do not use the card directly but in a digital wallet.

It worked for me last time for a Vanilla $95.35(10% off $100 denomination) plus some groceries purchase. $100 must be spend in a purchase.

        • When you say digital wallet means google wallet?

      • +10

I have always used the CommBank Coles offers to buy gift cards. Never had an issue

      • Works.
Bought a coles myer once when they sent me a $15 off $100.
They cant see if its a gift card. Just looks like a purchace.

        • +2

NAB App allows customer to auto retain receipts from certain merchants by tapping its card. Bank has the technology to view some receipts now. I would say CBA is only more advanced in that. Digital wallet may prevent bank from getting the receipt info.

Check NAB App if have it.

          • +1

@Neoika: That's going to change the game again. Potentially no more discounted gift cards.

      • Has always worked for me. I pay with Apple Pay and buy a small amount of other items

      • +3

it always works , tried several times and all got cashback

      • +1

Worked for me on the recent Liquorland $10 off $100.

      • I always but something else with any gift card and always receive my cashback. It doesn't appear as gift card in my commbank account.

  • +2

Last time 10% straight off a week later in some states.

    • +1

That would be perfect timing, I've got a tax bill coming up.

      • WOuldnt your tax bill only appear after the end of the financial year (end of june)? Or are you talking not personal tax?

        • For Personal, you can get payg bills if your other income was too high. P2 didn't do tax for 2 years and ended up oweing some 20k (holiday let and shares did too well). Other than getting payg bills, he set up the payment plan for that 20k debt and pay every month (around 10% interest rate!!).

  • +2

I will wait for 10% straight

    • Why not do both?

      • Run out of things to spend them on ;)

  • anyone know if you can buy giftcards at coles with flybuys $ or not?

    • No. Didn't work for me a few months ago

      • 2000 points auto redemption may still work for certain customers.

        • I didn't have such luck. That also didn't show up before I converted to $$$.

          • +3

@trixieb: It is not about luck, but about eligibility. Info here. BTW, CWH eGC works for cashback till now.

            • +1

@Neoika: I received the email from Flybuys and had sufficient points for instant redemption. However it didn't work when I bought the gift cards. I didn't try for grocery shopping though as I converted to $$$ later.

  • +2

A little bit of a weird promo, people will be looking for the $100 GC this time.
But it will be much more annoying to use them to pay HECS, BAS and PAYG…

    • +1

Just use to pay your internet bill. $500 won't go far.

  • Needed to get more Flybuy accounts, any benefit to register new Flybuy account? E.g. free points similar to WW Rewards?

  • +11

Ive finally been caught up with a hacked card. The process to report is out of the 90s. Terrible offshore phone line, followed by something physically mailed out. Apparently 90 days to review, followed by another 90 to send out a replacement card in the mail. So factor in you may not have access to your funds for 6 months…for in the end $5 worth of points (without a credit card spend bonus above).

    • Did you try to use it straight away? There have been warnings before not to hang into it for long to avoid this happening. Would be a bugger if you did try to use it immediately.

    • +3

If you are only looking at $5, it would be ridiculous not to spend it right away. Most of us who got hack bought at least a month worths of cards. If you cant finish spending it in a month, then maybe you should not buy so many.
Also let us assume you bought 50k worths of cards, that is $2500 profits. As long as you got less than 25 cards hacked you are still looking at a profit. The chargeback process is certainly tedious and time consuming but it definitely works according to my experience.

    • +1

Yes, use cards straight away, like within 24 hours! I'm usually diligent and use them all within a day after reading all the previous comments, but this 1 time I didn't as I had a lot of things going on and when I eventually got around to using it 2 weeks later, I had 1 $100 card nearly all spent! The claim process is long and tedious and so sketchy sounding, but I continue to wait for my refund after lodging it. It seems like the hackers started using it 4 days after I bought and activated it at the store…so be warned!

      • +1

I use them with 24 minutes. Buy from coles, open up my aussie broadband app and pay whilst still in the store.

  • Thanks OP.

  • -1

    Is this 10% off?

    • +1

It is realistically 9.09% off, due to the savings is actually a “$10 bonus” in points form where you’d have to spend it again, therefore spend $100/$110 = 9.09%

      • +2

You forgot about the $5 card fee.

        • +1

Sorry I was referring to the IKEA GC only.

          • @noelhoi: Yeah ikea gc are 9% off, cant really cash them out reliably to make a profit.

    • It is a $5 profit in the form of flybuys pts. It is only a discount for income tax avoidance purpose but essentially a profit. A profit is a profit, the % doesnt really matter as long as you buy within your ability to use them.

      • So $5 profit on $250 gift cards? Is that it?

        • Just $3 profit on $250 Coles MC

          Activation fee $7, 2000FB back

        • I wonder if it would be better to buy 2x $100 gift cards. Then technically you would get 2x 2,000 points= $20. Rather than a $3 profit it would be $10 ($5 fee for each card). I think it said no including $50 cards.

  • +4

I guess makes more profit with $100 gc

  • Is it possible to buy these cards with Eftpos perfect gift card ( Bought from woolies deal) ?

    • Still worked during the last 10% off round a couple of weeks ago, when I realized option for paying Coles Mastercard Gift Card with Coles e gift cards had been closed off at the self serviced check out.
No guarantee that it would be ok by next week though. YMMV.

      • +1

I'm in Perth and couldn't pay with Coles e-gift card for both self-service and serviced checkout. Worked previously

        • Also in Melbourne.

    • Unfortunately not anymore

  • +1

I remember the pre wookie monster days when you could get a free weeks groceries from these deals. Ah well loose lips sinks ships

    • You could get much more when the 10% off deal was running. Plenty of helpful people have ruined these deals over the years, to the point where it's hardly worth it.

  • The last time that I bought 5 of these Coles GC's on such a deal, 3 X activation failed, and Coles staff gave me a number to call.
When I called it they said that the 'help desk' at Coles should have given me a refund and to go back.
I did, and they did a refund on the 3 cards. But I still got the flybuy points!! 6,000 points for free!

    • Seems like they don't have a stick rule on the points yet. My previous online orders on Coles, WW, and BigW got cancelled and I kept the points. I guess it would be the same on other points related stores atm

  • They are getting stingy. Only 5 gift cards in total (not per day).

    • +2

That was the rule before the 5 per day.

    • +2

Coles used to be even more stingy for bonus points gift card deals.

If you go back a few years, you’ll find that Coles only awarded bonus points on the purchase of one gift card per deal.

      • @WookieMonster do u have any idea what could be happened??? I bought $1500 gift cards in 3 different Woolies $500 each in 3 different rewards cards.
        1. @first Woolies: bought $500 gift cards: Paid by Westfield eftpos cards bought from aldi promotion and perfect eftpos gift cards bought from Woolies last promotion using leftover amount (.61c to $106), transactions went smoothly.
        2. @second Woolies: bought $500 gift cards: Paid by 5 Westfield eftpos cards $100 each bought from aldi promotion. Transaction went smoothly.

        Problem came at third Woolies
        3. Bought $500 worth of gift cards: tried one $500 the perfect eftpos gift cards-invalid transactions-declined. Then tried another perfect eftpos giftcards…again invalid transaction-declined, tried 3rd perfect eftpos gift card with $250, it was accepted. Tried same card immediately for remaining $250 but declined straight away. Again tried 4th perfect eftpos gift card for $150- declined and tried $100 accepted. So what it triggered??? Big amount like at aldi before??? When used big amount-declined, when used small amounts-accepted!!!!

        • +1

Error code 12 (Invalid Transaction) is where the card issuer does not accept the transaction. In other words, Blackhawk Network has placed redemption limits on their open-loop gift cards (Perfect eftpos gift cards, OnlyONE Visa gift cards, Activ Visa gift cards) when you try and use them at supermarkets (e.g. Coles, Woolworths, ALDI). I think the limit per day is $400 per gift card, although it is something that would need further testing. I have not been able to purchase 2x discounted Coles Mastercard gift cards in one day using the same Blackhawk Network open-loop gift card ever since they brought in these restrictions about two months ago.

Westfield eftpos gift cards are not impacted by this, because Westfield eftpos gift cards are not issued by Blackhawk Network.

          • @WookieMonster: The thing I don’t understand is $250 accepted but another $250 not accepting afterwards, even 150 not accepted but $100 accepted. So confused!!!! Anyway now onwards im using $100 each time with 5 different cards…

            • +3

@R n b: You should have used $400 perfect eftpos+$100 westfield for each of your transaction. It has been this since a couple of months ago.
Also note the limit is imposed on per card type per merchant basis, not on individual card. So if someone has used the same kind of card before you did, then you are out of luck.

          • @WookieMonster: BTW i successfully used 4*$500 perfect eftpos gift cards at Costco.

  • +2

Seems to me hardly worth the effort and risk for such a small saving.

  • Last time I bought gift cards it totally messed up the offers I was getting each week. Is there a way to get a new fly buys account using my same mobile number?

    • +1

Yes, it is not strict with it.

    • Yes x 5

  • Does anyone know if they will issue on the spot replacement if the Mastercard fails too activate?

    • +2

It ultimately depends on the staff member at the service desk who ends up assisting you.

I have only had two Coles Mastercard gift cards have its activation declined at the checkout (at different stores), and the staff members helping me had different ways to approach the situation:

      • The first staff member attempted to do a receipt-based refund transaction, but quickly realised that the checkout would not let them do a refund of any gift cards (even though they were the duty manager and should have more permissions than a regular staff member or service supervisor). They then had to do a manual refund transaction by searching for an item category and then manually punching in the purchase price of the gift card. They chose to refund to cash (without taking cash from the register), then grabbed a new gift card from the service desk cabinet and purchased that using cash (without placing any cash into the register). I was never asked whether I wanted to do a refund or an exchange for the declined gift card. (Keep in mind this was during the last 10% off Coles Mastercard gift card deal where a Flybuys card was not required.)

      • The second staff member immediately initiated a manual refund transaction and refunded the purchase price back to the card I used in the original transaction. I was never asked whether I wanted to do a refund or an exchange for the declined gift card. (Keep in mind this was during a 10% off Coles Mastercard gift card deal where a fully registered Flybuys card was required.)

There have been stories from others on here saying that store staff refused to help and told them to call either the gift card scheme owner (InComm) or Coles Customer Care for assistance. However, if you call Coles Customer Care and ask for help with your declined gift card, they will tell you that the staff at the store should have refunded you on the spot and/or exchanged the declined gift card for a new gift card.

Ideally, what a staff member should do for an exchange is:

      • Print a copy of your original purchase receipt.

      • Initiate a manual refund transaction.

      • Choose any product category. (I think I have seen Cards/Wraps used as a product category for manual refund transactions, so that will probably work best for refunding a gift card.)

      • Enter the purchase price for the gift card that failed to activate at the checkout.

      • Choose Cash as the refund payment method. (Staff should not take any cash out of the checkout.)

      • Staple the copy of the original purchase receipt and the refund receipt to the gift card that failed to activate and file it away to be processed later.

      • Grab another gift card with the same denomination and scan it.

      • Scan your Flybuys card.

      • Finalise payment by choosing Cash as the payment method. (Staff should not put any cash in the checkout.)

      • Check whether the replacement gift card activated correctly; if so, hand over the gift card and its purchase receipt to you.

      • +1

I have been in both these situations. On one occasion, the staff member refunded the amount to my original card. The other time I was issued another gift card. But process wise it was pretty much the same on both occasions. The only difference being, in both cases, registered flybuys was required.

  • +1

To check the balance on the card the website is https://www.mybalancenow.com/#/

  • Can anyone confirm as to how many IKEA giftcards can be used in a single transaction on their website and in store ?

    • +1

      From their website:

There is no limit to the number of cards that can be used as payment.

      • Thank you. I just read that. Have a bigger purchase to make in coming days. Hopefully it will work just as they mention.

        • +1

If you buying the IKEA GC, this may be helpful to your next IKEA purchase to some extent.

  • +1

"Limit 5 Gift Cards per Flybuys account"……watch out because this means anyone using family grouping can only get 10,000 points on 5 cards, regardless of how many gift cards are purchased. Been caught with this last time….so pathetic of Flybuys….very angry about this stupid condition. What difference can it make where you each have an individual Flybuys card and are in a family grouping?

  • +2

Did anyone go out and buy the Mastercard? Seems redundant now that they have 10% off online.

    • Will still go to use my CBA offer on it

    • So much easier to do it online. And the online deal is better saving if you purchase the $250 GC.

    • Physical cards can be used in-store, e.g. buy on sale 3rd party giftcard @ Woolies.

  • Stack up the IKEA GC deal with this deal.

  • My wife has a Flybuys account, but it is linked to mine so all the points earned pool in my account.

Can she still get the bonus 5 times as well as me?

    • +2

      No

    • +1

Nop, that's why each of my wives has her own FB account.

    • No. See above

  • Can you do a single purchase with IKEA using multiple gift cards?

    • From their website:

There is no limit to the number of cards that can be used as payment.

  • We can actually buy the $100 Coles mc, then use it right after for Ikea. Total I believe will still be 5 per acc, but if u only need 2 Ikea (or have multiple flybuys acc), that’d work slightly better

  • Does this offer need a registered flybuys account or temporary works ?

  • If I have already bought 5 x $100 IKEA gift cards and now wanting to buy 5 x $100 master card gc, will I still get the bonus points for both transactions?

    • Also want to know if there is a limit on bonus points for any one gift card type. E.g. if I have already bought 5 x $100 IKEA gift cards yesterday, if I buy 5 more, will I get the bonus points for this second transaction? TIA

      • No

      • Some people will try to tell you no, but if you use a second flybuys account it will work.

        • OK, it'll work on my flybuys. PM for details.

        • +1

Maybe some people are confused because Flybuys allows us (under the same address) to have 1 acc with multiple cards (on which we can only claim this 5x), or we can have multiple acc with single card each (on which we can claim this 5x each as per number of accounts we have)
