news article
More info on Wendy's expansion. I also heard one of the stores will be Broadmeadow NSW.

      Done. 😃

Two points from the news.com article.

      • Picture of Wendy's store in New York. Wendy's slogan is "Quality is our Recipe", the sign is missing the letters L and E.

      • The article discusses Australia’s KFC franchisee Collins Foods which brought US powerhouse brand Taco Bell to these shores. It states - "But Collins Foods said late last year that following a sales drop at Taco Bell in Australia it was hating the rollout – indeed its closed several relatively new stores – “to ensure the long-term strength of the brand and to generate the required return on investment”. Probably they said halting, but news doesn't have as their slogan "Quality is our Recipe".

We already have Wendy's. They sell donuts and milkshakes.

  • +14

“Wendy’s is 100 per cent better than McDonald’s or Burger King,” construction worker Jordan Sullivan told news.com.au in a branch of the US’s second largest burger chain, located a few blocks from New York City’s iconic Grand Central station

Has he tried Australian McDonalds before? Miles ahead of US McDonalds in quality.

    • +3

How could it possibly be worse in the U.S.?

      • +5

        Amazingly, it is.

      • Shocking it is. Don't even bother going for breakfast its horrid.

      • Lower quality ingredients.

        • And chicken burgers are callrd chicken sandwich there , wtf!

    • +1

McCafé was "invented" here wasn't it?

      • Yep, Melbourne, 93……

    • +1

I completely agree, I hate Mcdonald's in the US, Macca's is heaps better.

  • The real threat is Five Guys and they are already here.

    • +4

      Expensive I hear.

    • +13

      Misso: I love 5 guys!

Me: oh? What burger did you try?

      Burger?

      • +4

I hear you. Mine is always going on about how 5 Guys’ small-size serving is more satisfying than anything she’s had recently

      • +1

Reminds me of this Five Guys reference in an interview with Karl Urban and John Cho a few years ago during the publicity tour for Star Trek Beyond

    • Five 👀

    • +1

LOL Five guys is no threat, its about $30-40 for a combo!

    • Yeah, nah. Very expensive. Will only "win" if consumer demand moves up the value chain like it did with pizza out of Dominos/Hut to chains like Crust.

  • +2

Wendy’s was here before. It depends on if they stay this time.

    • +1

      She sleeps around…

  • +5

    Still waiting for Shake Shack…

    • You sure? Have you tried?

      • Yes, I’ve had it about yearly since about 2015. Whenever I’m in a country that has it, I get it.

  • +9

I bet Wendys won't understand the Australian market, will waste billions, and then pullout entirely in five years. They will charge too much money or won't train their managers properly and it'll all fall apart like it always does for Johnny come latelys.

    • +1

      Much like Starmucks.

    • OTOH, Wendy's (the burger chain) have been in NZ for decades and are still there.

  • +2

    Just want my chick-fil-a 😩😩

    • +5

Australia is much more irreligious than the US, I don't think we'd put up with it being closed on Sundays.

      • +2

You should protest, how about boycotting them on Sundays?
Srsly though if they can make a profit on 6 days a week then good for them.

      • +4

At least we get to miss out on OzBargainers complaining about a Sunday surcharge.

  • A competitor for lousy quality, overpriced products. Who would have thought?

  • +9

There’s a number of reasons Australians love maccas and I think it will continue to do well, most have little to do with the actual food:

    • there’s a lot of them (most medium size towns have at least one) and to the most part you can get the same items all over Australia
    • familiarity, they’ve been around a long time, childhood experiences etc
    • because there’s a lot of them, most people know someone who has worked there or have worked there themselves
    • they have consistent long enduring charities like Ronald McDonald house
    • drive through in most stores, the ultimate convenience, especially with kids
    • they’ve adapted to Australian preferences but keep core items. Eg intro of McCafé and inclusions like banana bread, toasties etc
    • the quality is mostly consistent, not consistently good, but consistently what you expect
    • they are open long hours, with enough 24hrs
    • there’s a huge amount of capital behind them with all the established stores
    • they have a strong workforce, and structure/training around their workforce
    • deals and loss leaders
    • they are on major freeways so people grab it on their road trips
    • ammenities like toilets and wifi

I’m looking forward to trying Wendy’s, but don’t think it’s a threat to maccas.

  • Unless they try and compete on price then Maccas and HJs will be fine.

  • +2

Wendys has been here before the other kicked their butt .
Only difference this time is 3 delivery services that might save em .
Seriously they are no threat at all to the big 2 .

    • Seriously they are no threat at all to the big 2 .

but… but … I read it on the interwebs.. it must be true.

  • +1

Its definitely a "Grass is greener" scenario. Its the same mid-quality fast food, may last for a while as a fad. And it won't be anywhere near as cheap as when people have inevitably tried it in the US

    • Exactly. People will rush to it, like they did for the first few months with Krispy Kreme and Taco Bell. Then is super quiet.

  • +3

Why McDonald's+Hungry-Jacks Should Fear Wendys Entry into Australia

If the new Wendys is like any of the recent 'American' food chain to enter Australia, they will be far from cheap. Carls, Five guys, Taco Bell etc. All over priced for the food they deliver. I think HJs and McDee will be ok.

    • +1

GYG (profanities) all over Taco Bell.

Wendy's story will be the same. Best case scenario I see for them is setting up another competitor in a few key places: I don't see them getting significant market share. And if they don't get the quality/price right, without skimping on the quality, and nailing this right from the start, I don't see them succeeding.

McD's + HJs have too much market share & familiarity, and with the supply chain to back it up.

  • +1

Maccas have been jacking their prices exponentially since last year. No ordinary meal is under $10 on large anymore.

If it wasn't because of the apps points, I would jump ship but I think you are right, their omni presence will be hard to shake.

    • As have HJ's. Remember when 2 x Bacon Deluxes were $6.95 or less. Now you are lucky to get one for that price.

      • the 2 bacon deluxe was my go to, back when had to print the vouchers
        .

      • Wow. One of the lesser known handy things about OzBargain: comparing today's deals with last decade's!

You're lucky to get a single Bacon Deluxe for $7 these days!

  • +2

With Big Mac's now being the size of the old junior burger, and the "meat" so thin you can nearly see through it, anything would be better.

McChickens being crusty dry and tasteless anything would be better.

    • +1

Had KFC for the first time in ages last night, and got a deal with 4 wings in it, and they were literally the size of their old nuggets… The wife's strips were about 25mm long each. The shrinkflation is real.

      • +1

KFC…. seems like a good idea at the time… 15 mins later it doesnt seem like it was a good idea…

  • +2

It is going to take a decade or more to get to the saturation point of Macca's and HJ's.

I don't think Wendy's is going to be any more of a threat to the main players in Australia than what places like In and out burger/Taco Bell, etc. have been

  • +4

Why McD should fear the amount of money that Wendy’s is paying to News.com for advertising…seriously, these types of articles should at least run with a ‘the author repeated PR releases provided by Wendy’s marketing department’

  • Wendy's and chipotle thanks!!

  • +1

Lol, unless it actually opens up near my location, I don't care….. For example the nearest Carl's jr to me is ~28km's away….. Same with costco….. So I can't say I care much….yet!
