  • Guys, what is the best way to use up the balance on a card?

    • +10

Post the card info in public.

      • Thanks

    • Use it at Coles and Woolworths supermarket, select payment method, select mix payment, select card, enter any amount left in your card. I normally bring about 6 to 10 cards, to swipe.

      Very easy.

      • These are digital cards.

      • Sorry, I thought physical card.

You could also find a utility provider or similar that lets you pay bills online with custom amounts, even if you prepay your bill for the future. Electricity, gas, council rates, internet, mobile etc.

      • Thanks. Good idea.

  • Got 35c on one of the digital card. Where can I use this?
Most places that I know have a minimum $1 or $5

    • I always enjoy doing split payments at Woolworths Self Checkout.
If it was greater than $1, I would buy a custom amount Amazon Gift Card from Amazon.com.au

    • Split payment in Coles/WW.
I saved up all the prepaid cards with low balance and wrote the balance on the back and then did bulk split payment when I went shopping.
I wouldn't say I enjoy it like @wutang01 does, had a receipt of +-2m last time, but split payment works well for those tiny balances.

      • I think the Coles split payments are easier. Less clicks per transaction.

      • Are you all talking about online ordering allowing us to split payments on various cards?
Since this coles digital card can’t be used in store.
        Thanks

        • No. Split payments at self-check out in-store.

Plan ahead. Do not leave an odd small balance on the card unless you know how to use it up.

    New story here.

I purchased card on 31/05 and used this card within two minutes after I received (for school fee).
Today my school told me this card had been rejected by bank.
So I made phone call to card issuer, and they told me someone claimed this card belongs to him/her, so they put this card on hold.

Now I need to lodge a dispute and the processing time will be 45 -90 days.

    • Why is the school only just processing the payment now? It's been 7 weeks.

      • The money should already go through to school.
But the bank/issuer chargeback this amount, as the "other" cardholder lodge a dispute from Incomm.

        • Ah ok - that makes sense.

        • Sounds like they have sent the same card to 2 different people?

    • This is new. Keep us updated, please.

Hey, @aoliren, do you have an update on this matter?

By the way, did this happen to you with these digital gift cards? Did you pay the fees in person (not possible if it was digital gift cards) or an online portal? Did you check the balance on the gift card(s) after you had paid the fees? Did the transaction show up on the balance page?

Sorry to hear of your experience :(

      • +1

        Still waiting for the outcome.
Yes. Pay via online portal and the transaction show up on balance page.

        • @WookieMonster, I wanted to see if you could share your thoughts on this matter? How likely is it for someone else to 'claim' another's gift card?

And would it have been safer (though it was not possible in this instance) if OP had paid the fees in-person i.e., swipe and PIN? I am afraid it wouldn't have made a difference since it seems like the payment did go through to the school, but somebody called Heritage Bank to claim that the card belonged to them.

And, finally, is this issue just as likely to occur with the physical gift cards sold in-store, compared to the the digital versions?

          Appreciate your thoughts :)

            @Nelumbo:

How likely is it for someone else to 'claim' another's gift card?

For physical Coles Mastercard gift cards, that would be difficult, because there should only be one physical gift card and one copy of the purchase receipt. The purchase receipt also lists the last three numbers of the gift card's activation barcode (which is printed on the back of the gift card), which should make it straightforward to link the physical gift card to the purchase receipt.

Of course, you could have the following happen:

            1. Someone steals your physical gift card and create a duplicate.

            2. Someone grabs a copy of the purchase receipt (either by taking a photo of the original receipt, or getting the Coles that originally sold the gift card to print a duplicate receipt).

Having said that, if that scenario materalised, I think you have much bigger problems to deal with.

For digital Coles Mastercard gift cards, it gets more problematic proving that a specific digital Coles Mastercard gift card is the one you purchased, because the tax invoice from giftcards.com.au only mentions the email address the gift card was sent to. The tax invoice does not list any unique identifiers on the digital gift card that InComm could use to link the digital gift card to the tax invoice. You could provide both the tax invoice and a copy of the gift card email from giftcards.com.au, but hopefully whoever at InComm reviewing the dispute request looks at both and can determine how the two are related.

I do not know how likely it was/is for a specific digital Coles Mastercard gift card to be sent to more than one customer, because it is only a theory, plus I do not have access to that kind of data! I will say there are a handful of reports throughout the 24 pages of comments in this deal of people being sent gift cards that were already redeemed when they received them, so in my view, it is a strong theory.

And would it have been safer (though it was not possible in this instance) if OP had paid the fees in-person i.e., swipe and PIN?

I think it would be safer if you are the cardholder and you swiped the card, as InComm would be able to see that the transaction was a card-present transaction. Considering the only kind of card-present transaction possible with physical Coles Mastercard gift cards is by swiping the physical card, I think a transaction dispute would be less likely to succeed if the school said to their financial institution that they saw you swipe the card.

It would be worse if you are the cardholder, but someone stole your physical card and then used that to pay for their school fees at the school, because InComm could see it was a card-present transaction, so they could conceivably say that you failed to protect your gift card and may not assist you with disputing the transaction (as you would have likely been in breach of clause 8 of the cardholder agreement).

It would be even worse if you are the cardholder, but someone created a copy of your gift card and got a copy of your purchase receipt. Again, if that happened, you probably have much bigger problems to deal with.

but somebody called Heritage Bank to claim that the card belonged to them.

            You mean InComm, right?

InComm are the owners of the Coles Mastercard gift card scheme and would therefore handle any transaction disputes (or requests to block a gift card, etc).

Heritage Bank is only contracted by InComm to assist with the financial administration of this gift card scheme. Sure, Heritage Bank is listed as the gift card issuer (and you also lodge AFCA complaints for Coles Mastercard gift cards against Heritage Bank), but they cannot handle transaction disputes themselves, as they cannot access any information on transactions on a Coles Mastercard gift card… at least that is what Heritage Bank has told me in the past.

And, finally, is this issue just as likely to occur with the physical gift cards sold in-store, compared to the the digital versions?

I think I have inadvertently answered that question for you!

Put it this way: there is a reason I will happily continue buying physical Coles Mastercard gift cards, but I will not purchase another digital Coles Mastercard gift card for the foreseeable future…

            • @WookieMonster: Thank you very much for your detailed insights, @WookieMonster. Greatly appreciated.

Same thing happened here. Just went to use my $250 gift card and there was already a transaction on it from May 31 which I never used.

    • +1

When did you attempt to use your gift card, i.e., how long after purchasing? Was it immediately after?

      • +2

You can find further details in a separate forum post.

      • +1

Around 6 weeks after purchasing it. I purchased 2. First one was fine and then when I went to use the 2nd, it was already used. After 3 weeks I've been unable to get hold of anyone over the phone with hours of logged calls so I've filled a case with ACCC.
