  • isnt this camera like 4 years old ?

    • +1

It's still a fantastic camera, especially for the price. The updated version is better for video but if you're using it mainly for photos the newer version doesn't have too many advantages.

I bought this in 2019 before my son was born, good camera for sure but i remember i got it for around $1800 during a sale, cant believe price is still holding up

        • Agree that the price has held up pretty well!

          • +1

@dust: can't say the same for my Z6 that was bought around the same time. I saw used listings for 1XXX (iirc 1600?) on fb marketplace lol.

            • @dukeGR4: Z6 still a good camera with latest firmware upgrades though..

              • @OzViper: yea, it's a very good camera but too big with the S lenses. I go out with my X-Pro 2 these days.

ideally i prefer sth even smaller like a Ricoh GRiii.

A7iii is getting long in the tooth

      • +1

It's the model before the current model in the line up. It isn't that old.

    • +2

cameras last a lot longer now with no real significant upgrades over time.
The upgrades that make a big difference are the lenses.

fast auto focus, 4K, high frame rates, high FPS, clean ISO

      • -2

The A7III is missing IBIS which would be the only other feature that I can think that you've missed off that list.

        • The A7III has IBIS.

          • @Flyerone: Bin Chicken man wants to know your location

    • +1

it is, but there's a reason it's still an adequate camera sold at every major camera store

  • +1

a7iii is still very good value for money, newer cameras just been mostly video features the past year.

sold my xt5 after picking up an a7iii, the lenses for FF are bloody expensive, but I'm using the FE 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 which can be picked up used for very reasonable prices.

(i miss the xt5, but just too much $$$ sitting)

    • +1

yeah.. in the past few years I went:

      Canon 6D -> 6Dmk2 -> Olympus E5mk2 -> Canon M5 -> M50 -> Canon RP -> Sony A7mkiii -> Canon M50mk2 -> Fujifilm X-T3 -> Sony A7mkiii again -> now I have Nikon Z6

crazy ride, but the fact that A7iii is there twice speaks for itself lol

just got tired correcting color output in post, otherwise it's a great camera. 24-105G and 85 1.8 are great lenses, and Sony has great 16-35 options

      • just got tired correcting color output in post

What do you mean correcting the colour? If you're processing the RAW files, can't you just set the colour scheme you prefer as a preset in your RAW processor?

        • a lot of times I just flush the shots from camera to phone directly, where I touch them up a bit and share. it's a bit challenging on the phone.

anything I want to do seriously does go through RAW processing, so that's fine

for example Nikon Z6 I have right now, I just flush images to the phone like before, but there's much less left to touch compared to Sony A7iii

      • Canon 6D -> 6Dmk2 -> Olympus E5mk2 -> Canon M5 -> M50 -> Canon RP -> Sony A7mkiii -> Canon M50mk2 -> Fujifilm X-T3 -> Sony A7mkiii again

Yikes. That must be a nightmare having to sell and rebuy lenses every year?

        • I am an eBay ninja. wakachaaa!

accounting for all the sales, cashbacks and cashrewards etc. I usually don't lose a cent, sometimes even make a bit of profit along the way.

yes it's a bit of a chore, but hey I got to try almost all the major camera manufacturers first hand lol

          • @shabaka: lose so much money selling on ebay tho, 13% hit, hurts so much

            • @kirbycake: eBay allows you to sell 3 items every month with no fimal fees. plus free or 50% off postage labels

              easy peasy

              • @shabaka: you list it for free but it takes 13% off the sale price no? 3% for paypal and 10% ebay fee, I sold my XT1 on ebay

so if you sold something to 100$ you'd only receive 87$ish in your bank acc

        • great way to meet low ballers on gumtree, and don’t take their offer so they have wasted the drive ….

    • the lenses for FF are bloody expensive,

Good quality glass is expensive but the good thing is, they hold their value even better than the bodies. (They don't have a physical shutter that needs replacing.)

I've bought and sold glass that I've owned for quite a few years and broken even (or even made a profit - assuming you discount the affect of inflation).

    • I am still pondering on XT5 or A73, whats the advantages and disadvantages, what makes you went for A73 and drop the XT5?

      • I would like to know as well, as I enjoyed shooting X-T3, just lack of IBIS was annoying

      • if I had to guess it's due to cost of the body itself. Fuji XT-5 ain't that cheap for an APS-C.

Some of the lenses are cool and has good value ie. the Fujicrons but when you move into their "pro" lenses ie. the F1.4 WRs they are relatively heavy and bulky, have higher depth of field (ie. F1.4 is only equivalent to F2.1 on FF), Also, lens selection on the FE is more robust and established…

That said, if you just want to get into Fuji ecosystem like me, just pick up a used one. The color on the Fuji is UNREAL. Love the film simulation.

        • I sure loved shooting with my x-t3. fav glass was 90/2

Fujifilm top end cameras are built like tanks, along with WR lenses I never felt I had to be cautious about shooting under pouring rain

lack of ibis was annoying and was probably the biggest reason I sold it on. very good camera otherwise, and that cheap plastic XC 50-230 was optically very very convincing

I got it body only for $1100 brand new at one of eBay sales, hope to see a similar sale on x-t4 or 5 one day.. 😋

          • @shabaka:

That is crazy, my used 2016 X-Pro 2 I bought it for 1000 after intense negotiation a few months back…

I've never liked tele, but i have the 23 and 35mm F2, beautifully made lenses and rather affordable.

      • I typed up half my life story already before realizing it was probably too much, but let me know if you still want it.

pretty much I ended up with an x-pro 2, a7iii, x-t5, and felt like the x-t5 sat in the middle of the 3, day I'd rather carry the x-pro2 and shoot 18mm or 27mm prime (27 and 40mm FF eq) and night I found the extreme high iso on the a7iii to be more usable, took a photo in little to no light at is12800 and liked it.

x-t5 was the first and only brand new camera I ever bought, was a sad sell.

        • it's a shame they didn't make 18mm WR. running a 18mm with the 35mm would be a very cool combo. really wanted to pick up the 18mm F2 but it's an ancient lens at this point with really loud AF and that does not sit right with me.

I also wish that they could make a 27mm LM WR… some say it's too much to add a linear motor, but in reality I think Fuji cbf spending their R&D budget developing a 27mm that fits this specification. It's deffo possible to build a small compact prime. Canon did it with the EF-S 24mm, EF40mm and RF 28mm, all with STM.

          • @dukeGR4: yeah the 18mm is loud, for photography noise isn't really a problem, but sometimes the noise feels like it's screaming LOADING at you while you wait for the focus to catch.

did manage to pick up a 27mm wr for 300, but since getting the 18mm f2 I've been leaving that on the camera instead. the 7artisan 27mm is also really good for the price, defs not wr tho.

            • @kirbycake: 27mm WR for 300 is a steal, and I think that is a fair price and should have been the RRP and not 599… I've seen non-WR going for that high on FB Marketplace.

By the looks of it, it seems to have lousier autofocus than the old non-STM EF-S 18-55mm and 55-200mm which I had. those never hunted and were just as snappy as modern linear motor lenses i've used in the past 5 years.

              • @dukeGR4: used of course, as with most of my lenses.

seeing that the 27mm was on sale for 200$ before the wr came out, there was no way I was going to justify the cost they were going for, esp knowing other than wr and aperture ring rest is the same. most of my lenses I bought at really good price imo, again I always waited for a below average price to buy.

speaking on af, I found that with xt5 AF-C the lock one work really well, but with the a7iii is was lot more confusing to understand what AF was doing… has a mind of it's own on what to focus on… even on flexi spot

    • honestly how do you cope with not having film simulation… for me that's the biggest selling point of the Fuji system.

      • I still shoot with an x-pro2, its lot easier to carry for day, and night I use the a7iii, I adjusted the WB shift and for my night shots I edit the raws (even if I transfer to phone before I get home)

I do miss classic negative tho,

      • I just use a preset in LR, it’s easy to do

        • you know an OzB-friendly way to acquire LR? asking for a friend.

  • +1

Shame the amex offers ended yesterday

  • Price: $2,406.53?

$2272 next best thing at Teds.

basically find best price and price match at Sony. price matches live in your Sony cart for months

      • And you can "upgrade" the price matches over time. I have a lens down to ~$1670 which started at $2k so if they get CR up to >10%, with this cashback, I'll be grabbing it.

        • yeah done that, too

maybe I will go back to Sony one day, but sure won't be buying a7iii for the third time haha

70-200/4 was my favourite, with a few limitations.. looking forward to reading reviews on mark ii of that

135mm is a great lens, but not going back to Sony at this stage..

  • +1

I just went to check on Sony's cashback rate and noticed this new line as part of exclusions.

    Negotiated deals (phone/email/chat).

So I assume that means price matched deals.

    • I think it was there before? negotiated doesn't mean price match

      • +1

No it wasn't there before. A few weeks ago they had:

Purchases using any type of discount which lowers price advertised on the Merchant site, including but not limited to employee discounts, student discounts and price-matching

Which caused significant discussion and eventual removal of that condition, but a negotiated deal by phone/email/chat is exactly a price match. How do you negotiate a price match?

        • there's a form to submit on the website

          • @shabaka: Yeah, and when you get the pricematch, how do they reply?

            • @Flyerone: true :)

            • +1

@Flyerone: Emailed them , told me price matching is eligible for cashback.

              • @MLGB: I also emailed them and was told that cashback will be rejected on price matched sale.

Not sure which one is true.

              • @MLGB: Was eligible then?

    • They just added it today , but shopback still doesn't have this condition.

  • Wondering would the this approach works:

Coles Master card (7.48%) -> the ultimate gift card deal (8%) at JB Hifi $2273 with a total spend of $1938.16; IF Sony approves this purchase, that will be $1538.16 after the Sony cash back.
