      rookie mistake, updated thanks

  • +4

$109.00 is a great price, nice find

  • cashback?

  • Amazon are most likely price-matched JB Hi-Fi with the wrong capacity (2TB vs 5TB)

Nevermind, looks like Amazon is price-matching Harvey Norman, etc. (as per below comment).

  • +6

Same price at a few places though. Domayne, Harvey Norman

    • +1

4TB costs $70 more. I want what they are smoking. … Maybe not.

    • Thanks, got 1 from Harvey. Too good to pass

  • Anybody ever tried shucking one of these? 5Tb of mass storage for $110 isn't that bad.

    • +5

normally WD 2.5" hd can't shuck as their USB integrated into the harddrive. and most of 5TB 2.5" HDD is SMR.

      • Fairly sure there’ these are sata interface drives that are the thick variants.

Basically you can’t use these in all 2.5” slots unless they support 15mm (iirc its 15)

    • +1

It's $21.8/tb and you can often see larger nas drives at this price/tb point (or even better, like the segate amazon deal but wouldn't hold my breath on another one like that).

https://youtu.be/we9t1eOLj4o?t=51 looks like you can't connect it via sata anyway..

  • I assume this can be used on a regular windows PC no problem?

    • +1

      Yes

  • "Designed for Mac", whatever the hell that means.

    • +5

Formatted for HFS+ out of the box rather than NTFS/exFAT

      • So to be clear, can you reformat these bad boys to use on PC? Is it worth it?

        • +2

Yes you can. Physically they are the same as the non mac ones.

        • +2

Just need to use diskpart to remove the mac stuff by the clean parameter but make sure you have the right disk selected.

    • +2

It means after you purchase this, you can tell your wife that you need a Macbook Pro 16 inch to use it.

      • That’s what she said.

  • +4

Bought two for my ever-growing collection of romantic/action movies.

    • +1

      Who says romance is dead.

  • I wonder why Mac users aren't buying these drives.

    • +2

Because Tim Apple told us to use Thunderbolt and iCloud.

    • +8

Too cheap for an Apple user

    • +8

      Easy to fix.
Up the price to $1090, and slap on a shiny Apple logo. More shiny… more sales!

    • it needed to be advertised with colourful silhouettes

  • Thanks. Bought one. Will figure out usage later.

  • +1

    I am seeing this:

Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months

  • Is the downside that it's 2.0 USB?

    • It's USB 3.0, backward compatible to 2.0. Sold out at Amazon AU anyway.

  • OOS

Pricematch at officeworks for extra 5% off. Use Harvey Norman price at officeworks.

    • +1

Thanks, was able to do it! Paid $103.55. They had to think about it for a few minutes though.

  • Might be still one available as I just cancel my order.

    Why isn't this a bargain?
Portable 2TB External Solid State Drive USB 3.0 High-Speed External Hard Drive for PC, Laptop, Phones and More(F-2TB-BLACK) https://amzn.asia/d/d2I9h1c

    Pros:
    SSD
    Price
    Cons:
    Only 2TB
    No name

    • Because of the brand…..

      • +1

        I have a 4tb version, it's a great drive with usb c support.

        • Have you filled it up? I've heard some of the fake ones just have a lower storage volume so they only stuff up when they're filled past their actual capacity. Not saying that's the case here just asking?

    • Because scam

    • I think mostly because mechanical drives would be more reliable than no-name nvme/SSDs. In fact, in high usage scenarios, mechanical drive failures are less compared to nvmes even for well known brands.

Back in stock. Just bought one. Rather buy from Amazon than from Gerry

    Edit: Out of stock again

Check the 1* reviews, unusually high for a WD drive. Now regretting the impulse purchase.

  • Bummer, could have done with one of these at this price!

  • Can anyone recommend a usbc to usba cable? My new laptop doesn't have standard USB ports, only the newer smaller ones lol

    Thanks

    • The last external, portable HDD I bought had both types of cable in the box.

If not, Amazon/OW/Jaycar/eBay have loads of options. Just do a 'USB C to Micro B cable' search and pick one that's not too cheap!

    • @Adelv
Just buy a USB C to USB A USB3+ hub, or one that has USB A ports along with other inputs as well, but up to you of course :)

    • +1

These harddrive have a usb-c convertor already in the box. So can plug one end in your external and then into a usb-c port on your device

  • For anyone having issues with formatting it on Windows heres what I did

    1) Connected the harddrive to your windows pc
    2) Open up diskpart via the search menu
    3) Enter cmd "list disk" and see which disk is the external (should be the one with like 4500gb free)
    4) Enter cmd "select disk X"
    5) Enter cmd "clean"
    6) Enter cmd "create partition primary"
    7) Enter cmd ""format fs=<format you want the drive to be> quick"
    8) Enter cmd "assign"

    Should be good to go

    • Or just open up disk management, delete the crappy Apple volume and format as NTFS.

  • anyones order actually shipped or got an estimated date? mine went from 1-2 months to "We will email you when we have an estimated delivery date."

    • Just received mine

      • yeah got mine today as well
