      Slim 7i on sale: https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-slim-series-laptops/lenovo-legion-slim-7i-gen-8-(16-inch-intel)/len101g0028

  • Hey I'm new in this, can be charge by the usb-c? and overall is a good deal right?

    • +2

Yes. 100w via a standard pd charger, 140w via a legion propriotory charger (i dont think its avalible here in oz right now)

And yes its a good deal considering the build quality of legions and the screen, and the slimness of this design compared to your traditional gaming laptops.

This offers very decent battery life for a gaming laptop.

      • Hey Brrrrt, could you pls' recommend a competitively priced standard pd charger that would work with the Slim5? I went ahead & ordered this & it will be my first PD charging device, so I'm excited! I don't want to fry my laptop with some awful offbrand cord from China. I suspect I shortened the lifespan of a few laptops in the past when I replaced the proprietary ac cord with a knock off.Oops! I understand the Lenovo pd charger goes on sale from time to time, (often as little as $23)but right now it's $160 bucks it's a lil pricey. Thanks!

        • Hey man, sorry for the late reply i forgot about this all together:

This seems good enough for the job, just make sure only the type c port alone is connected for the 100w charging. its 99 bucks witha 25% coupon right now. Pair it with any type c cable that can do 100w from amazon and you would be all set

            @Brrrrt: Beat me to it!

I have both the Heymix and Zyron suggested below. I prefer my Zyron. For me the Heymix just didn't work sometimes.

            • @S2: ah haha. probably go with yours then. i have never had any experience with neither since i was using another brand which seems to be gone from amazon

        • This Zyron Deskpod is good.

You'll need to find a 100W USBC cable. I've seen them posted often on OzBargain.

        • You are in luck, a deal has just been posted for what appears to be the best price yet.

  • can the ram in this be upgraded?

  • How is this compared to a 3070 ti?

    • +1

      4060 is more comparable to a 3070.

      • DLSS3 is not yet for 30 series. Better get the 4060

  • Hey OzFam, looking for some opinions.
I am looking for a gaming laptop and tossing between this and the MSI Raider GE66 (link below). I like the idea of an oled screen and bigger ram and ssd but I know everyone here is really into these Legion laptops. What do you guys think?
    https://www.centrecom.com.au/msi-raider-ge66-12ugs-156-oled-…

    • Raider will give you the better gaming performance for certain and OLED is awesome. But you do lose out on battery life.

Not much of a deal since ATL was 2.4k

      • Thanks mate, that was pretty helpful. Funny story I actually tried to buy that laptop from your post/link back then but as I ummed and arred about it the eBay coupon expired.
The atl $2.4k deal had half the ram and half the SSD storage compared to the CentreCom deal so actually pretty similar and this is the "new" version. Not sure what the difference is aside from the RGB though. Anyway I think I might pull the trigger on the msi deal.

ah my bad, didnt realised that had the extra goodies bolted on.

not a bad price. go for it

          • @Brrrrt: Hey mate, I've been checking your comments on several posts and they were very useful. What would you recommend if I'm comparing between the two below laptops?

            [MSI Raider GE66] (https://www.centrecom.com.au/msi-raider-ge66-12ugs-156-oled-…)

            [Legion Pro 5i (16″, Gen 8)] (https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-pro-series/legion-pro-5i-gen-8-(16-inch-intel)/82wk00dtau)

            Thanks in advance.

@Michael M: Hi mate, sorry for the late reply.

Its hard for me to recommend the L5Pi at this price over the GE66, because for one, the difference between a 3070ti and a 4070 is tiny- a mere 2.4% at 1440p, but also the difference in cpu isnt exactly that much worth the upgrade in price - you do get some increase multicore wise but much less single core and impact on games is minimal as neither cpu will be bottlenecking the gpu they are packed with, and thats not to mention the OLED screen on the raider is far more premium than IPS (albeit there is always the possibility of burn in).

With the legion, you are getting

              • better cpu performance (and ability to undervolt)

              • slightly better gpu performance

              • screen is 16:10 instead of 16:9

With the raider, you are getting

              • thunderbolt 4 (no tb4 on the gen 8 legion 5i pro for some reason when last gen had it)

              • OLED display with 100% p3

              • extra 1tb storage

              • 150$ cheaper

              • @Brrrrt: Thank you so much. Your insights are always helpful.

  • This or the current deal on the Legion 5 Pro for $250 more?

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-pro-series/legion-pro-5-gen-8-(16-inch-amd)/82wm006xau

Looking for a semi mobile rig for audio production & photo editing as well as some casual gaming (currently keen to get stuck into D4). I just want to be able to have it on my lap without it being a huge brick.

Is there axtually much difference in size/weight on these beasts to justify the extra cost? The pro habing 500nits over the 300nits of the slim seems appealing.

Also even more lost with this newest AMD scheme moreso than the last gen.

    • +1

L5P with them dragon ridge chips have little battery life to speak of, worse than many intel chips for that matter and should be the bigger concern here.

Otherwise, the Slim would give you far better battery life at not much worse gaming performance (main difference being the cpu performance difference, while gpu 140w vs 100w 4060 is tiny this gen due to nvidia artifically nerfing it so that you dont really gain any performance boost past 100w).

I dont personally view it worth the extra 250$ in your case. The better screen is probably the only thing worth the upgrade here.

      • Would the ram at a bit higher frequency be an advantage??

        • slight advantage, yes

  • Hi what about the Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8 with the new 13th gen i5 and 4050 for 1549 is that ok deal? thinking of grabbing that as not a hardcore gamer now that i am in my fourties with kids and hardly have any time for gaming.

    • +1

Hey mate, do you mean this?

Spec wise its fine, the 4050 laptop is approx 5% slower at 1080p and 10% slower at QHD than a 3060 laptop card, cpu wont bottleneck the gpu nor thermal throttle (and give you pretty okay battery life had it not for the small 60wh battery) and as for the chasis, its a rebranded ideapad gaming, so not amazing but not terrible at the same time given the price. Screen is definitely a strong suit on this one with that QHD 165hz and you do get mux switch on this rig so no problems there.

I think its a good choice.

  • Would this be a sensible buy as a non-gamer? Looking for a high powered rig for predominantly business and spatial/GIS work, so needs some grunt. Also want to future proof as best I can - no so keen on churning through laptops too fast.

    • also buying it for gqis/arcgis, I feel like it should be good enough unless you dealing with some very heavy datasets

  • Ebay specs indicates the brightness is 350 while the post says 300,which one is correct

  • Damn the no TB4 really is unfortunate

  • I went ahead & bought this so if anyone wants a review when it gets here let me know!

  • I'm so keen in getting this https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-slim-series-laptops/lenovo-legion-slim-7i-gen-8-(16-inch-intel)/82y3005lau
Any other brands with similar specs can be recommended? Thank you.

    • +1

Two very similar choices. If you have any preference for AMD over Nvidia, it's a decent option. For me, I need some of the AI tools available for Nvidia cards for video editing purposes - but if you use it solely for gaming then performance will likely be very similar.

The Asus has great battery life if that's a consideration.

  • I bought this & the Ebay config has an LED screen. I love everything about it except the screen. The cooling is exceptional. It's quiet. It looks beautiful, but it's giving me awful eye pain. If you have any eye sensitivity this may not be the laptop for you. I have never had an issue before so I'm assuming it's the mini-LED screen. I'm afraid I'm going to have to return it. Gutted, as I love everything else about it. Fiddling with settings & wearing blue light glasses hasn't helped.
