crap screen resolution but perfect for a new tablet head unit for my car. don't need high rez for navigation, just bigger screen.

    • How does installing a tablet on a car work? How do you attach it to the dashboard? Do you replace the whole radio system that's already there or just place it on top of it? Do you just need the tablet, or it works as a screen to another system you have to install as well? Thanks

      • You can do it a few ways, currently I just have a tablet in a mount that clamps into the cd drive of the old original head unit & connects via Bluetooth. the Bluetooth link means all the steering wheel controls work & I never use the radio anyway so I am fine with the tablet covering all the head unit controls. You can add a Sim or hotspot your phone for internet.

I prefer this to an android auto setup. just running a tablet isnt as restrictive. I can split screen nav & media or run music in background, run revanced so I dont have to pay for no adds etc. You can basically set it up however you want, the only limit is how much you want to f about configuring android/apps.

        • Thanks! Will do a mock-up install using our old tablet and see if it works for me.

@pichxlonco: Most lithium-ion batteries have a maximum temperature of 50 degrees. I've measured higher air temperatures in my car, and the tablet will get even hotter if the sun is shining on it.

Overheating lithium-ion batteries frequently cause fires. Even when the batteries aren't being charged.

            • @Russ: Thanks! Was thinking about maybe removing the battery altogether and have it plugged in to power. Although that means it will take a while to boot up every time i turn on the car.

@pichxlonco: That will make it safe from the battery aspect. But it also means you'll have to remember to shut it down before you turn off the engine, every time, or you'll be left with partially-written files in the tablet's filesystem, which may corrupt the operating system. Android systems normally have time to shut down properly, because of the inbuilt battery. They may not behave properly if power is cut abruptly.

You could wire the tablet's power supply to a permanent 12V supply (that doesn't turn off), but then you run the risk of flattening your car's battery. Perhaps there's some way to get the tablet to shut down after you have been in the same location for 15 minutes, perhaps with Tasker or similar app? And you'll have to check the power supply draws less than 1mA from the car battery when the tablet is shut down.

@pichxlonco: I have been running my cheap chinesium tablet on a dash mount for over 2 years in the Brisbane sun without issue. If its a real concern, throw it in the glovebox when you park in the sun. Magnetic mount is great for this. I take mine out if my car is being parked somewhere more than a day anyway.

You can also DIY a shroud to keep direct sun off it/make it more readable in direct sunlight. Something like this but out of black cardboard. It should be less deep than the FPV hoods usually go because you will be looking at it from an angle.

When you start getting to the point where you are modding the battery you hit the point where you may as well get a drop in generic android head unit & be done.

                • @mitt: Thanks for this. I might try a chinese tablet as a minimum viable product, and then maybe upgrade to a formal head unit if it works for me.

A lot of deals are specific to certain countries (usually Russia) or regions. Looks this one isn't for Australia. Tried changing the region to Russia and now it can be shipped.
