Does it work for existing accounts? It mentions you should let your lapse, but when it does, can this activate an existing subscription?
It simply adds to your current subscription time, so long as you have exactly the same current subscription. So if you currently have a Family license that expires on November 1, 2023, once added your new expiry date will be November 1, 2024. But there is some information in other posts here about extending solo subscriptions, I defer to them for that info.

Besides 6tb, how is the family sub more useful than just getting a single sub and sharing the password across computers?
The family sub is six seperate accounts, complete with their own separate login details.
The single sub is just one account - you can't share this between six people easily, nevermind that the 2FA would make logging in difficult amongst the users (only one person will be getting the phone codes…) you would all be dumping your phone photos into the same photo stream for example, and you'd all be sharing the same Desktop/Documents/Pictures folder - the rest of your family would be able to access all your data.
