Mayver’s 5 seeds taste so good!

I haven't tried Pic's but I tried Mayver's one time because so many were raving about it here on Ozbargain. I didn't like it at all, really weird almost bitter/oily flavour, could not work out why so many liked it so much.

Have been sticking with Kraft (Now Bega) peanut butter ever since, why did I ever doubt it and think it could be beaten? 🤦‍♂️ It is 🔥

Commercially, fully hydrogenated vegetable oils, such as soybean, cottonseed, palm, and rapeseed, are added to peanut butter to prevent oil separation and sensory degradation.

Both Pic's and Mayvers don't have hydrogenated vegetable oils (which is their selling point). The centimeter of oil floating at the top of the jar is just pure peanut oil that has separated from the crushed nuts, so you'll have to stir up the jar once in a while so that the PB doesn't harden into concrete when it dries out

The tartness and lack of flavour is due to the lack of sugar (also their selling point and how they get a 5 Star health rating) so if you prefer a smoother easier to spread product that is sweeter stick with Bega or Skippy.

      • Thankyou for the detailed explanation. IIRC I did mix it up a bit but but as you mentioned still very lacking in flavour. Does sound more healthy though, so that's a plus for some folks.

Yes, I will definitely stick with the sweeter smoother varieties 😅 Haven't tried Skippy yet but probably because Bega is just so satisfying.

        Cheers👍

I'm also a Kraft/bega fan. I've never tried Pics but have tried Skippy. I found it really, really sweet. It's a similar consistency to Bega, but almost the sweetness that you'd expect of a peanut flavored jam.

          • @CacheHunter: Thankyou for this, I think I would prefer a peanut butter with jam swirl (like goobers etc) rather than just a really sweet peanut butter.

Or just some Bega with some jam/Nutella on top 😋

Good to know this about Skippy, cheers 👍

I was a Bega/Kraft fan (well, Aldi's version of it) and the first time I tried Mayver's, I thought it was terrible. Just didn't get all the fuss.

But, I didn't want to throw out a whole jar of peanut butter, so I persisted with it. Now I am a Mayver's convert, and am stocked to the brim thanks to the half price sales every so often.

I think initially it can take your taste buds a while to get over the change in flavour from what you're expecting/used to. If I go and try Bega/Kraft now, I can eat it, but it tastes a bit gross to me. It's too sweet, whereas Mayver's has a much more 'peanutty' taste. Plus, as others have mentioned, you've got to stir it up!

Your comment reminded me of this old Kraft ad https://youtu.be/XGSTkGtqbIk

      • I remember that commercial well, brings back a lot of memories! 😃👍 I even used to repeat the lines as a kid. I think a lot of ads back then had so much charm and character.

But if I see ads now they all seem completely souless things made by aliens and I can't tolerate them for more than a few seconds before I'm desperately reaching for fast forward etc. It's this weird visceral reaction I have, I know this sounds extreme, but they actually feel like poison to my mind. 🤢🤮

        Thank goodness for Adblocker! 😅

You're used to the sugar in the others.

    • Without question, Pic's is better than Mayver's.

  • Fix and Fogg the whole way

  • healthfood store freshly made - only nuts and salt

      Exactly what this PB is.

Pic’s is made with Aussie peanuts in NZ.
Mavyers, Fix & Fogg are made with Argentinian peanuts in AU.

Pic’s win for me. Great taste and Aussie peanuts.

    • Pretty sad that we cant make a single mainstream Peanut butter here in Hos..straya.

Mayvers used to use Aussie peanuts but demand outstripped local peanut supply. The Aussie peanuts had a much richer taste than the imported ones.

  • This is the best tasting peanut butter, even my kids greatly prefer Pic’s. I’ll be buying 12 Jars to stock up

Who was it that gave away the Peanut Butter Stirrer Lid - With the stirrer/winder built into the lid ?

Brilliant - Kids loved it - thought it was hilarious. And worked quite well, mixing the oil into the PB.

Having said that, it was accidentally thrown out with an empty jar of PB.

I think it was Mavers - Good marketing, good peanut butter.

  • For years we used Kraft PB to make satay sauce but a while ago, like so many other products (BBQ shapes), something changed. Using Pics now, prefer it to Mavers but it's not the same as the old Kraft

  • At the end of the day its peanut butter, probably 20x more healthy for you than olive or margarine spread… but if youve got time to debate the minutiae kudos, sirs…
