Jesus I’ve become addicted to buying these things with every price drop. I can’t be the only one.

    • +1

Are you buying enclosures for them?
If so, which one would you recommend?

      • +1

This one doesn't really need a enclosure. You would need it for something like a 980 pro but not this one.

        • +7

          Enclosure = USB adaptor

          • +3

@BoomTetrisForJeff: oops thought he was enquiring about the heat sink.

            • +1

              @ninohax: No, @BoomTetrisForJeff is correct.

I want a small USB enclosure for these SSDs,
as I think that's smaller than a standard 2.5" SSD drive.

              OR

Am I thinking wrong, and shouldn't waste a NVME drive
just to use it like an external USB drive ?

              • +1

@whyisave: The one time I decided to put a tasty NVMe drive into a USB3 enclosure, when I compared its operating speeds with a Samsung T5 1TB drive (vs a Samsung NVMe EVO Plus 1TB I believe), the T5 came out in front and was slightly cheaper overall than the NVMe plus enclosure. So in my very limited experience, I would just get a Samsung T5/T7 whatever on special in future.

I did want an enclosure to be able to read other NVMe drives as necessary in future, and I've been able to use it once for such a scenario so money not wasted I think. Depends what you need. Slightly more versatility in owning an enclosure.

      • Anything that gets 10Gbps speed - usually it’ll come with a USB-C connection - Like this:
        https://www.centrecom.com.au/orico-aluminum-usb-c-gen2-m2-nv…

        • Thanks.

That USB enclosure is almost 30% the price of the 970 EVO Plus !

      • I have this one, no issues at all
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/778665

        • so, same Orico enclosure on eBay is AU$ 26

Using the eBay Plus $5 voucher will bring it down to $21 ,
and then with the $10 off TopCashBack deal on now ,
should bring this case down to $11 :-D

    • 4 in system already, wanting more, thinking of getting this:

      • +1

Are the distros getting stored on SSD now? :o

        • Drives filling up fast with cheaper high speed NBN haha, just like steam/epic library, get now player later

          • @kehuehue: Same with me.. Have 2 GB gaming drive that got filled up. Had to move 1tb to external HDD. Not buying any more components until I really really need them.

      • If your MB supports PCIe splitting/bifurcation you can get 4x or 8x carrier boards for not much more.

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Adapter-4x32Gbps-Individual-Indica…

Probably a more efficient use of the slot.

I hate to break it to you but PC > PS5

        • no joking allowed

  • -8

    Is this ps5 compatible?

    • +6

      No

    • +5

This has been asked a 1000 times. Just google the ssd model number + ps5. It's less effort than asking for the 1001th time and waiting for a response. Same with the "does this work on switch" comments.

      • +1

Last time I told someone to Google the answer I got negged into oblivion, that instead of trying to empower someone to answer their own question with the internet at their fingertips, I should "just be community-minded". For that, I give you a + vote. ;)

        • +2

Entitled world. Isn't it. Spoon feeding is a norm now

      • yeah im sure he was waiting all those 7 hrs just for your response

    • No it does not.

  • -1

Are these any good to be used in a NAS?

I'm looking to grab a Synology DS923+ soon.

    • -1

      cache? yes.

      • -1

Yes and perhaps secretly hoping future DSM updates allow 3rd party SSDs as storage pools.

But mainly as cache and wonder if 2TB is overkill.

  • is this all time low price?

    • +9

Only until next week at the rate SSDs are going

      • +1

28degrees price protection time it is then

but yeah sub $150 for 2tb is my psychological price

would be insta buy if it were 980 pro

      • Question, would you buy this or the WD sn850x 2TB deal for $219? I have a 5900x w/ x570s mobo. Worth the price increase for the gen4 over the gen3 as a boot drive?

  • +1

    grabbed one, thank you, @Dumax

  • Hmmm should I buy it not buy. I wish I have a fortune-telling ball. Need a 2nd SSD but can hold off. My 1tb primary drive is getting pretty full

    • +3

Brain says no, heart says yes. Boss (wife) says no, mates say yes.

      • +1

What does the heart of the mates' wife say ?

        • +1

maverickjohn can buy, but their husbands cannot.

      • +1

Sounds like your wife's boyfriend is the ultimate authority here. I'm100% sure he'll let you have your little SSD in return for what you gave him all this time.

        • +1

Wife's boyfriend's wife is the ultimate decision maker. So, it is a no. She and the wife both accept bribes: iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Decision maker gets the best iPhone.

  • +5

I just want to see that 4TB SSD for $229 to retire my hard drives.

    • If they're reading these comments,
I'm sure they can see the the guaranteed sales
from the huge demand for that price-point…so, they should do this :)

  • How does this compare to 980?

    • +1

This one is better (performance wise).

    • +1

Which 980 model exactly? The Pro would outperform this I think, but Panpanw is right about the 980 standard.

      • but Panpanw is right about the 980 standard.

He was the one who asked the question.

        • Sorry, 12am things. I meant you netsurfer 🤣

      • Samsung 980 512GB is $39, bought one from MSY/Umart but haven't picked up..

  • What’s with the warranty again? I read the discussion and seems some argue that Amazon AU is liable under ACL, which I think could be the case, probably to 1 or 2 years. Suspect Samsung’s 5 year’s warranty isn’t covered, right?

    • +3

It's best to go through Amazon AU. Amazon AU's official position is first year is covered by them. However, the CSR I spoke to refused to guarantee second year onwards will still be managed by Amazon AU (not officially anyway). He couldn't really tell me because he needed an active case to check. He did indicate still contact Amazon AU after first year.

Samsung AU does not and will not do warranty support for non-AU SSDs and these are not from Samsung AU stock. Samsung USA needs to do the support. So, basically, Amazon AU needs to provide 5 years worth of warranty support (and they can send the SSD to Amazon USA internally, after receiving the faulty SSD from you).

OZBers experience on Amazon AU's SSD after sales support is generally positive.

      • $175.50 at Education store if anyone needs warrenty

    • Australian Consumer Law doesn't give a shit where Amazon got the SSD they sold you. It's Amazon's responsibility to service the warranty.

  • Is this a good upgrade for my laptop SSD?
    Basically for OS.

    • itll be fine

      • Cheers 🍻

    • This is an excellent SSD but runs hot. A heat sink would be a good idea if possible. I would say the SK Hynix P31 is better especially if it's a thin and light laptop as it's very power efficient.

      • Excellent..ta

  • Just in time before the end of financial year. Is it tax deductable if bought from Amazon UK?

    • Don't see why it would be an issue

  • I'm so tempted but 970 Evo Pluses have been documented to not work well with Macs and 40 Gbps enclosures.

I have a 970 Evo Plus 1TB in a Acasis TB34 Thunderbolt 3 Enclosure (https://www.acasis.com/products/acasis-thunderbolt-3-40gbps-…) and I only get around 1,131.7 MB/s write and 2342.8 MB/s read. 1,000 MB/s is not too bad but it would have been great to get even at least equal to the 2,300 MB/s read speed.

  • thanks! grabbed one to replace my current 500gb 970 EVO

  • +1

Can anyone give me some advice on if it’s worth getting a gen 4 model (was looking as SN770) at about $180? Or is the difference between 3 and 4 not worth that?

    • +6

Depends on your usage but for the vast majority (i.e. browsing/office/gaming) it won't make a difference.

      • +3

I’m definitely not a power user or anything so thought as much, just ordered this one - Thanks
