Ocz Octane 128GB SSD for $69 at MSY (SATA2)

301

Hey everyone, my old SATA HDD shat itself today, so I thought I would have a look around at some SSDs considering how cheap they've been.

I looked on MSY and found this SATA2 128GB SSD for only $69 which I thought was a good bargain for Australian stock and from a brick and mortar store! So I'm picking one up this afternoon. This was recently on sale for $69 + $9 shipping from centrecom but I don't think that's Australian stock and it's online only (correct me if I'm wrong!).

Now before you hound me about SATA2, my motherboard doesn't support SATA3 so there was no point in spending an extra $20 for speeds my computer can't utilise.

I think you forgot to put commas between your tags.

    • Fixed, thanks :)

I'd be careful with ocz octane drives, a high failure rate. I have one which iv just returned cos its crashed on me twice.

    • Thanks for the heads up, was almost tempted on this. Might wait for the intel SSD's to drop to this price.

Hence the reason they are so cheap, spend and extra $20 and pick up the Kingston, or even better the Sandisk for an extra $30.

Well worth the extra money for less hassle.

      • Yup, hopefully the store will give me store credit or something so I can pay extra and get a more reliable drive instead of replacing it, Even though my PC only has sata2 im gonna pay extra. iv learnt my lesson haha

      • Probably good advice, I might change my mind too. However for people that are willing to risk it, the price is still pretty good.

The approximate returns rates for OCZ are ~5%. Intel are ~0.1% to give you an idea of the difference.

        • Yeah I saw that stats too when I got mine, I figured 5% , how unlucky could I be….. it seems I can be very unlucky. Zzz good price though haha

Stay away from OCZ octane drives. Mine died after 2 months which I returned to Centrecom and got a refund (thumbs up Centrecom). It's cheap for a reason. Simply too unreliable.

      • +1

Hahah I got mine from the same place and waiting for them to get back to me. Mine didn't even last 2 months

        • SSD's have the same failure rate as HDD's

It's only because SSD's are now hitting mainstream we are realizing that

    Good luck with your BSOD's…

  • I'd say stay away from OCZ SSD's unless you want to be looking for a new SSD again soon. I'd personally stick to either the samsung 830 or intel 520 SSD's.

OCZ since 10/2010 still going strong. Back when it was $150 for 60gb O.o

  • Mine died after 5 weeks of use, absolutely useless SSD. Stay away, not worth the 69

  • My two are still working great…

  • OCZ Octane 128GB has spectacularly bad reviews on Newegg. I guess it's worth a gamble if you just want a spare SSD to play with, but probably not a good idea for someone's first SSD.

  • Pay the extra $30 and get the Vertex 3 / Sandisk Extreme instead.

  • i had 3 vertex2 drives, 2 of them died, replaced with corsair GT, died in 6 months too…go figure…

Their return rate was spectacularly high- 7%- compared to any of the name brands- but that still means 93% of them work. Are you feeling unlucky, punk?

OCZ are cheap for a reason. Bought one, worked 2 hours before dying. Swapped it and that one worked a day before dying.

  • Just to update:
I ended up getting the Kingston 120GB for $89. I know it probably isn't the best SSD for the price but I needed a new hard drive ASAP and couldn't justify the risk of the OCZ SSD dying for the sake of $20

    • I have one in my (SATA 2) work laptop, goes great.

I used the mini partition wizard to shrink and clone my old HDD.

And then googled some guides to tweak the setup for an SSD, disabling pre-fetch, etc, one thing I would not recommend is turning off the page file unless you have tons of RAM.

Also SSD Life is a nice tool to run now and again to check on your SSD health.

    • Just to update - The Kingston is working really well. Extremely fast boot up and read/write speeds (even though my motherboard isn't SATA3. It also gets 7.7 in the Windows experience index. Pretty good for $89 :) Also comes with 3 year warranty

IMPORTANT INFO FOR MAC USERS: this SSD is currently NOT compatible with mountain lion. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?10370…

They said that their firmware team is working on it, but I won't put my money on them since it's been well over a month with absolutely zero updates.

  • Maybe I am the lucky one, my octane is still working strong!

  • I'd avoid this. Mate had one die on him, took it back to MSY and they instantly knew what the issue was. Never buying a OCZ ssd again, had too many bad experiences!

Careful of SATA2, if you are expecting super fast boot times you need to go up to SATA3 which runs about twice as fast as normal connections. Good price for an SSD but not really what good for what SSDs are usually good for.

    • Yes and no. This will still be much faster than any non-SSD (including sata3 6Gbps ones).

So it's good for an old laptop or something that doesn't have sata3 (as long as you have good backups).

  • Mine died after 1hour. When I try to install it to my laptop, try a few times. The system can't find the ssd….I bought it from the Centrecom last time.

Hey I've read a bunch of reviews on this and most people say it FAILED AFTER A FEW WEEKS. I hope some people read this before buying it :P

  • +1

Mac users be warned, the drive doesn't support Mountain Lion (http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?10370… and http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?10355…). OCZ have known about it since June, but still haven't fixed the issue.

Regular users, I bought one during CentreCom's sale, I've now sent back two. This time I'm replacing it with another brand (probably Samsung). CentreCom have been good about it though, which I'm thankful for.

So, for me at least the Octane really wasn't worth the savings; I've spent more in postage than it would have cost to get a better brand.

    • are they happy with you returning it for another brand and just paying for the difference? Because I'm thinking of doing the same too but haven't yet contacted them yet. Have had mine for around 2 months.

  • The one I had did a black screen of death (cannot even reach blue screen of death). However, re-install Windows 7 and run the disk check (did not report any error @!#@!). This time I put anti-virus/firewall software on it. If it blue screen or black screen again, it will be going back to CentreCom.

Boot up speed isn't impressive compared to other SSDs. Application loading speed is fine though.

Cannot recommend this SSD. If you need a cheap and nasty SSD for a test PC / spare PC which you pretty much just use it for experimenting things, then maybe you can consider it. It is a slow SSD.

  • My SSD just died 30 mins ago. Octane model, and was used for about a month.

    Yep, 5% return rate FTW.

  • Avoid.
Its a cheap SSD for a reason. If you want an experimental SSD by all means get it, otherwise the failure rates are too high to justify using it for daily use.

  • MSY kind of annoying, they practice the bait & switch with their clearance items..

namely cables and fans where they only have the more expensive versions in stock

    • I believe it. Just ordered desktop RAM, they sent me an invoice for more expensive branded LAPTOP RAM. Ask them what's going on, they tell me out of cheaper brand. Then had to e-mail again to clarify if they understood I wanted desktop RAM. What's the point of having an on-line ordering system if you don't keep it up to date or pay attention to (or even acknowledge) orders.

Similar scenario a year ago after I made the journey to the Ultimo store only to find out my cheaper product was out of stock. Got their usual "soup-Nazi" treatment too.

And their website looks like it was set up in the 90s too. The only reason I still use them is because they're sometimes cheap (IF item in stock) and I respect places that are transparent about prices. In Capitol Square shops when I ask for the price I get "For you?…", and a half-minute pause before I get my special irregular customer price.

  • I own two OCZ SSD's (Vertex 3 and a Vertex 2)

Was getting BSOD's with these drives until i performed a firmware update on them both, now both are running fine
I'd recommend doing a firmware update before installing an OS

although I hear the Octanes aren't as reliable as the Vertex's, food for thought though
