      • Worth the discounts for all the troubles to finding it using it and now able to use it and have to try again?

        • I am able to check balance online now. Need to find another time to use the card. Hopefully the system does not block it again.

      • How'd you go?

I'm.having the same issue as well.

        • Did you try to buy gift card with gift cards?

        • Have not tried to use the card again yet and did not buy a gift card with the gift card.

  • surprised how fast it got sold out this time around. Last time, March, I could still get them on Saturday night.

  • +8

    bring back the digital cards!

    • better for the environment
      • less plastic, packaging, and paper receipts
      • less fuel burned driving around for no reason
    • more time efficient
      • for staff not having to wait for transactions to finalise (at service desk), or approve (at self check outs), and to refund declined transactions
      • for customers not having to drive around
    • Also no stock issues!

    • But physical is difficult to purchase too for many

    • +1

It's an obvious loss leader. They want you to physically visit their store so you can buy their other stuff. Can't do that with digital.
I'm honestly surprised they don't put these at the back of the store next to the milk.

  • +1

Melbourne Central had plenty of $100s and none of $250. Also saw stash of $100s at the service desk. Store manager said he has no idea when they will restock when asked. Coles Spencer had limited $100s and none in $250s.

    • +1

Only had stock on Wednesday. Went in Thursday none left. I suspect may restock Monday or Tuesday if lucky. But overall very low stock this time.

    • -1

I saw an old Chinese lady buying $250 in Coles Spencer.

Obviously she hid them somewhere. The checkout lady told her she won’t be able to buy these anymore .

I am pretty sure she will send her husband to purchase more

      • -4

Damn what a great idea - next time we know the sale is going to be on, go to the store and hide them and then purchase when the sale is on lol

        • +1

^This is why we can't have nice things.

          • -1

@griffy: This wasn't my suggestion, look at the comment before mine

      • Certain areas of the cities are going to have most cards hidden on the first day. In Melbourne, the CBD & Box Hill are obvious ones.

Go to parts of the city where the demographics are different and there is plenty of stock.

I've been able to get 10 * $250 every day (2 FB cards) of the special.

        • Go to parts of the city where the demographics are different

… and then you've just wiped out most of your savings in travel time and travel cost.
Large distances in Melbourne take a long time during the day - it's not feasible to go jollying around the city for such a small return.

          • @Nom: Of course everyone needs to do their own calculations. For some people, it will be a small detour and worth it. For others it will not be.

  • ATO is closed for maintenance till 11.30 pm.

    • GovernmentEasyPay was still able to accept payments.

  • Anyone ask Coles if more stock coming over the weekend or Monday/Tuesday?

If not perhaps will just pull the trigger on the $100 ones now - I only have enough money for about $2k more anyway.

  • +1

Yay, I got some 250 at Chatswood Chase today.
Only some 100 at Westfield when I checked.
There could be more coming in later, but I got some 100's since I dont wanna keep walking there.

    • Nice one mate! What time did you go to chase? I was there around 11ish and the shelves were empty of the $100 & $250

  • +1

Guys at coles randwick they seemed to be filled again,u can check your local coles

  • +3

Got a trick to buy 100$ cards at almost same discount as $250 ones.

Just buy the cards in seperate transactions and pay by HSBC debit card, which gives further 2% Cashback.

So finally cost of $100 card will be $92.61 after discount and Cashback (Will be $231.5 for $250 gift card worth)

Only issue with this is it's bit of a hassle to call the attender for every transaction. Got weird looks everytime I called her.

    • +1

Haha appreciate the idea and that some grumpy staff will simply get sus over you doing multiple transactions. I was buying this was at JB Hi-fi, when a young lady called it to be fraud 😂

Anyways, YMMV. But I'm surely thinking of getting a HSBC card next. Sad that the cap is $50, so only 26 cards or 17 in terms of $250 equivalent.

    • Noob question. Why do you need to buy them in seperate transactions using the hsbc debit card?

      • +2

2 Percent Cashback applies to transactions below $100 only…

        • Split payments of 99 dollars at self-checkout?

          • @jakxon: Just need to buy each card seperately.

$94.5 after discount and $1.9 Cashback later

Edit : Yes split payment at Checkout seems to be a better idea.

            • @Yogi555: Someone posted earlier that at Coles you can't really do split payment multiple times at self checkout - its limited to like cash + one card.

              • @Shadowsfury: Yes, if you read my below comment, split payment at self checkout is not possible.

However can do it at the cashier. Before payment need to mention to them that you will be paying split payment with $99 max.

          • @jakxon: Scanned 5 cards in single transaction and tried split payment, but it didn't work with self checkout. However worked at the counter.

Had to tell them that my card has limit of 100 per transaction so have to do split payment.

        • Ok thanks.

    • How many times can you do this in a row? Anymore than 3 and they'd likely block your card.

      • Purchased 5 cards yesterday and today and was able to purchase without any issues.

  • +1

Help me understand. Why isn't everyone jumping n these? Shouldnt these sell out within hours, even 100s I mean, 250s do…

I have in the past somehow ignored these offers, thinking I am missing some fine print.
But after years I decided to buy today and used them for a haircut, a lunch and harris farms. Wow 5.5% discount on everything.
I saw tons of 100s in 3 Coles.

Am i missing something why people don't jump on these? Is 5.5% too small a discount for the inconvenience of "swipe" vs tap?
Today everytime anyone was using their cards, I wondered why isn't anyone buying these first?

Asking because i think I am planning to buy 10 or 12 of these 100s…

    • +3

Only the first 5 a day are discounted. I prefer the $250 cards as the discount is higher and better for paying large bills.

    • +3

The way you are using has the least benefit. The main ways are to use them online to pay all sorts of bills and to stack with other offers.

      • +3

I mean i pay full price for a haircut and now I am getting a discount? How is that wrong- genuine question?

        • +2

You mentioned swipe hassle for the discount, which makes it less satisfying.

Clear the balance in as minimum transaction as possible, not many times of uses and several times of balance checks.

I understand some people only relate the kind of deal to entertainment account, not essential bill account. That's why they won't pay bills with them.

    • +6

@archieduh - I'll refer you back to the pinned FAQs by WookieMonster on Pg1 of the comments. Been using these cards for 1yr+ now and from my experience can reiterate a few points:

      1. You run a high risk of getting hacked. Many users have reported it on OZB. During last month's promo, I had 3 such instances on my own cards. You can get a replacement card provided you keep the receipt and can wait 3 months whilst the dispute is investigated. These cards are easy targets because knowing the exp date + BIN (first 5 to 6 digits) is pretty easy. The hacker just needs to brute force the remaining 6 through software.

      2. You'll eventually realize gift cards are looked at differently by many merchants. There many limitations in spending these freely, e.g some merchants won't have swipe facility, some don't do split payments. One such example is buying gift cards in-store. I've been stopped from buying gift cards in-store (at other stores, not Coles) using these cards because these are also classified as a gift card too hence the commonly known policy of you cannot buy a gift card with another gift card applies.

      3. If you buy 100s of these cards in bulk and keep them for extended periods, you run the risk of getting hacked and losing your ability to dispute. Both MasterCard and VISA stipulate dispute timeframes. So suppose you buy a card today, get hacked hours later but only open your card 3 months later and realize that, you have lost your ability to dispute it!

      • +7

Plus with the current interest rate.. if you keep these for a year, you’ve lost around 6% on potential interest savings which offset the savings from accumulating these.

      • Thanks for explaining why these are hackable, even if i keep them safe i run the risk..

        • Convert them to other cards if you are worried.

          • @Zippy7: How? Buying some oneline gift card with these cards? I tried Woolies it didnt let me.

            • +2

@archieduh: For Woolies, register your MC on Paypal, and then buy the Woolies card using Paypal.

    • I do think more people are jumping on the deal now, and perhaps even Coles staff themselves. I remember when 10% off just started (last year sometime) checkout staff look at me funny (or maybe even suspicious) but I think some have caught on and are possibly grabbing these themselves.

      • I havnt been able to buy any from Epping last year or this year. I swear only the 100s are ever available.

I don't know if the staff are just withholding 250s from customers. I have been a number of times and each time theres nothing.

I have had no troubles getting from other coles store in bigger shopping centers near by.

        • +1

          It's Epping, full of fraud

  • is cardception still possible? saw a bloke a five docks today paying for the gift cards with gift cards. Also he had his own stash of $250s. Self checkout machine and the staff didn't seem to care how he has $250s when the store didn't have any.

    • Might be a plain-clothes staff who doesnt want to attract too much attention:)

    • the staff didn't seem to care how he has $250s when the store didn't have any.

Clearly works there and is a senior rank probably.

      • More importantly, how did he manage to purchase the MC cards with the same type of card, POS system should block this

        • I do have some doubts. I actually managed to redeem $10 off Flybuys reward points on my purchase at a self-serve checkout!

        • I'd like to know how OP knew they were paying via gift card and what type.

          • @wavesgreen: I think I might have a workaround that will work for buying Coles GC with another GC. Problem is, will have to buy the cards one by one and I don't really wanna waste that much time 😅

            • +1

@nsingh21: what's the workaround? i have a few coles gc i wouldn't mind converting to other gc.

          • +1

@wavesgreen: i saw him ripe a gift card cardboard packaging open and put the rubbish in a green bag. Fiddled a while with payment so I assume he was doing split payment. He may not have paid with the same gift card, could be a different one, but he was definitely opening gift card packages.
I was checking out 5 * $100 so while I was there, so I didnt hang around for his full transaction. He was there before I arrived and still there after my transaction was completed.

I went to the service counter and asked if they had any 250s and they didnt.

            • @googoogaga: Interesting.

            • @googoogaga: Did you pay attention to which kiosk he used? the UI being on screen? Perhaps, he is doing manual overrides since he took a while.

              • @Sheng: no idea which type of kiosk he was using, but if you frequent five docks coles, it was the first machine on the left as you enter self checkout area.

    • +2

It should not be possible. I tried using a Coles Mastercard gift card to purchase another Coles Mastercard gift card a few minutes ago and it triggered the Invalid Product Mix error.

An Invalid Product Mix error is something Coles has got its payment processor to implement (and I actually think Coles does its own payment processing, much like Woolworths), so it should be impossible for staff at a Coles supermarket to get around. If staff could get around it, the staff member would probably get into a lot of trouble…

      • I would go ahead to then assume the invalid mix error should extend to all gift cards sold by Coles (since this block is essentially third party GC to third party GC block).

        • +2

I have only seen the Invalid Product Mix error crop up in the following scenarios at Coles:

          • Using Flybuys Dollars to pay for any gift cards

          • Using any gift cards issued by Coles Group (e.g. Coles Group & Myer gift card) to pay for any gift cards

          • Using Coles Gift Mastercards to pay for Coles Mastercard gift cards

          • Using Vanilla Visa gift cards to pay for Vanilla Visa gift cards

          • Using Coles Mastercard gift cards to pay for Coles Mastercard gift cards or Coles Group & Myer gift cards

          • Using a Coles Groceries gift card to purchase a “non-grocery” item (e.g. a SIM card)

Someone reported a couple of weeks ago you could use a Coles Mastercard gift card to pay for Ultimate gift cards at Coles, but I would be hardly surprised if Coles decided to extend the Invalid Product Mix error on Coles Mastercard gift cards to cover all gift cards sold at Coles.

          • @WookieMonster: WoW…looking at that, it seems Coles has implemented a very very detailed block based on what I'd assume to be on the card BINs. Given your earlier comments on Vanilla VISA requiring signature authentication, I'd almost write that off for buying any GCs (unless the supervisor knows you) and agrees to override manually.

Now to the Coles Mastercard gift cards - will be interesting indeed. I think back in Nov/Dec when the Ultimate GCs were at 15% off, I bought $5k worth using the Coles Mastercard gift card every single time. Will be curious to see if they work on implementing the block soon but agree I'd not be surprised either.

            • +1

@nsingh21: Woolworths also has their own blocks too, so I am hardly surprised to see BIN blocks at supermarkets.

Let's be honest, if there were no blocks in the payment processing process, there would be some crazy shenanigans going on…

Haha for the 15% off Ultimate gift card deal at Coles in December 2022, I only used Coles gift cards and Coles Group & Myer gift cards as payment methods…

              • +1

@WookieMonster: Agreed - you'd hate the idea that there's someone doing a rinse & repeat (i.e effectively wasting these cards for a small profit) whilst on a grander scale reducing the number of cards available for purchase by others.

For now - am quite happy to source all my supermarket gift cards online rather than in-store. Time to breathe a sigh of relief and chill until mid Oct

  • Anyone know of any gift card portals online that you can use the full balance on? ie where to buy Amazon or eBay gift cards with these instantly and for the full $250?

    • +1

Shopback but only 3 cards can get added for nondisclosure amount of time (<1 month) as you get flagged.

  • So, anyone know if you can load these up in PayPal/other, buy crypto, sell and buy more, rinse and repeat? Lol.

    • +1

you'll very soon get banned. Adding and removing a lot of prepaid cards is one of the fraud triggers most websites use. PayPal in particular has a limit of 3 prepaid cards, but you can extend it through security + ID verification. Keep doing more frequently and PayPal will put a restriction on your account e.g suspend your ability to make payments via card, or withdraw cash to bank account.

You might find some loophole website at some point, but due to fraud risk either the website will restrict you or Heritage bank/Incomm could block the merchant itself.

      • 3 prepaid cards at a time ? where you getting this info from?

  • -2

Is there a list of what Coles stores participate in this promo? I went to 2 stores in my area and they didn't even have the advert up so I assume they don't stock this normally.

  • -3

What do you guys put as the card name when buying online?

Also having an issue when purchasing - keeps coming up as invalid transaction when I select credit and put the pin in. What's going on?

These cards are crap. Won't be bothering again

    • +3

@camMMM - you can use any name when buying online. If you keep getting an error, its likely the merchant doesn't accept prepaid cards due to lack of security associated with them or a smaller chance but plausible that the gift card operator has blocked the merchant from their end.

For instore, maybe try resetting your pin on the website and try again. Sometimes the card takes time to activate so maybe try today and if it still doesn't work - call the number at the back of the card for support!

    • I'm not sure the negging
But I went to 4 stores today but the cards came up with variety of errors at a cafe Woolworths servo and shop

      Merchant unknown
      Transaction declined
      Invalid transaction

I used it a few times already.
I also cannot login to check the balance,

Is the merchant of the cards having an outage?

      • +1

Can you check the balance of your gift card through the automated phone service? If not, either your gift card has been blocked due to “suspicious activity” or there is an outage of some sort.

I will note I used a Coles Mastercard gift card in-person earlier today without any issues.

        • the site for balance check worked yesterday asking either the transactions but today site has been down all day

          When entering details correctly
A system error has occurred. Please try again later.

I can only try again tomorrow and hope not need support

          • +1

@cski: got same, but worked from another browser same laptop.

          • +1

@cski: The reason I asked whether checking the balance over the phone worked is that the balance check website can return the aforementioned error in a number of circumstances, including:

            • You entered details for a gift card that does not exist (or is not activated)

            • Your gift card has been blocked by InComm (the gift card scheme owner)

            • The website does not like your web browser (as @test8888 alluded to). You can get around this by trying Incognito Mode / Private Browsing on the same device, or clearing previous browsing data, or even trying to access the website on a different device.

When you check the balance over the phone (which does not involve speaking to a human), you will either be told the balance of the gift card (which means your card is active) or your gift card has an issue and you need to speak to a human (which means that your gift card does not exist / is not activated / is blocked).

            • +2

@WookieMonster: Thanks I did call them
It appears they blocked the card due to suspected micro transaction of $2

Sadly I did make this purchase at a salvos

The small amount bamboozled the anti fraud detection.

              Thanks helped a lot

              • +2

@cski: I’m glad you got it sorted out!

I am not overly surprised, because if you think about it, an indicator for someone guessing and checking card combinations (aka “hacking”) is to do small “test” transactions. If a transaction successfully goes through, the person “hacking” knows the that card combination works and would attempt to make larger purchases.

To be fair, I find InComm’s fraud detection rather erratic and I can understand your frustration.

                • I had one gift card randomly blocked after trying to use it at a cafe. I suspect it was due to me changing the PIN on their website.

                • Someone else had their gift card blocked, because their attempts to use it at a supermarket were deemed “suspicious”. I find that quite bizarre, because I have redeemed heaps of Coles Mastercard gift cards at supermarkets and not once have any of them been blocked…

  • Anyone successfully been able to buy a gift card instore from Woolworths ? Want to buy some Ultimate / TCN GCs with this but assume WW blocks the payment method

    • Didn't think TCN had any deals on this week?

      • These cards don't expire this week

        • I've used them at WW to purchase Ultimate cards in the last few months. I assume TCN should work fine as well since they're both Third Party cards.

          • @daanish: How did you do it? So you purchased the Ultimate GC instore and then swiped the Coles MC and it didn't give any errors?

            • +1

@rekke: Yep. I used both self checkout and staffed registers.

  • +2

Strange experience just now at my local coles.

Much older man buying 60 packets of cigarettes with the visa gift cards. Definately wasn't a smoker as no smell and teetch ean. Wonder if onselling or something else going on

    • Maybe he runs a small shop?

    • +2

I personally know a milk bar owner who gets his cigarettes with discounted gift cards at Coles. It is supposedly a cheaper source compared to the regular wholesale channel. I don't think there is anything against resale as long as you can legally sell cigarettes.

He also gets the added bonus of building a personal relationship with the store manager to get some preferential treatments when a card sale comes.

      • lol atleast now I have an idea where [or to whom] Westfield Parra stock goes during such promos.

    • -4

Any discount on tobacco is a win

      • +6

100% discount if you can stay away from smoking

  • Got plenty $100 stocks at Coles Eastgarden, but it has $5 activation fee :(
    Jack is back??

    • $100s aren't worth the time TBH 😂

      • +2

still 5.5% off. Ppl on ozb would sell their new born for $3 off.
