These are great if you never mastered how to use a normal tamper with a handle. It's much easier to get consistent results because of the rebate and depth adjustment.

  • Consistent Brew- Get consistent distribution and pressure every time making it easy to pull your perfect shot right at home, Leveling your grounds before tamping creates a uniform and consistent tamp.
  • Adjustable Depth - Set your desired tamping depth for consistent tamping pressure every time.
  • Dual Head- Distributor/Leveler and tamper are designed in one, double sides are available.
  • Pro Tips-Ensure your portafilter basket is fully dosed with coffee grinds to get the right amount of pressure from the tamper for a tighter pack and richer flavor. For best results, groom the top of the basket with a flat edge before leveling and tamping. Brew with good, filtered water.

already got the distributor tamper - worth getting the spring loaded tamper?

    • I use the back of a knife to level off the grinds before tamping with mine, I don't use the distributor side anymore. I find this works better in order to get more consistency.

So in other words I won't be buying the spring loaded one.

    • I have the Decent brand which I think this one copied. (the spring loaded version)
Not the best idea, coffee gets between the two lower parts making it inaccurate.

      Not cheap either. ($241.00)

      • There are many spring loaded tampers on the market. Not sure who is the first.

The Normcore one gets good raps. Ive got a Normcore and like it

        • Yes, I actually bought the 58mm Matow dual head coffee distributor posted below last night however I also bought this Yozoti 58.5mm spring loaded 30lb tamper last night for $26.99 at the same time so will see how it goes.

          I agree, it looks good.
Could have saved myself a fortune if they were around when I bought mine.

I use a funnel and weigh my whole beans for each shot, even though I have a great grinder.
Don't make enough coffee to ever become an expert tamper.
I have all the gear and no idea it seems.

    • No

    • Itt helps to have some kind of self leveling tamper, ensuring the level/parallel movement from the start. The depth or force is not as important during tamping.

Not a bad price if you need 58mm -

  • I always thought that newer machines already included a tamper within the machine. I have recently received a new Breville Barista Impressa for free for a product test. No tamper and no thermometer needed anymore. It’s all implemented.

    • +1

No. Very very few have it incorporated in the machine, and there are pros and cons of this.

All the prosumer ones do not have an incorporated tamper

How long have you thought that? BB Impress is the first machine below ~$2000 that does that.

Not including the fully automated ones.

  • I use this to "level and distribute" by manually turn the handle. Pretty sure it's not as perfect as other distributor tools but works so far. The tamping tho… It's a joy :)

  • If you were also using the screen strainer,
would you adjust the tamper depth slightly lower to account for the added thickness of the screen strainer?

    • depends, if you were using the distributing part, there are videos that show that a shallow depth doesn't actually do anything to deeper part of the puck leaving them with air pockets. The distribution tool acts as another form of tamper, it compresses the coffee bed at an even level while also levelling the grounds. What I would suggest is set the distribution tool to a level that will allow you to tamp once more with a normal hand tamper, but set the height so its actually allows you to "tamp" after distributing. That way you are able to compress as much as you can while levelling.

Depends on how much you are dosing.

I use a puck screen and use 18g. If you are finding the height with screen too high, dose a little less.

Do not tamp harder to accommodate the puck screen. It would change the extraction

      • Good idea, I might just reduce the dosing a little.

  • Side question:
Can anyone recommend a good single and double dose baskets for Breville Dual Boiler?
When I use the single basket that came with the machine, need to bring little finer than when I use double basket.

    • +1

Always can go vst. But usually you need to go finer with vst

    • +1

      Look up Pesado.

Guy runs Dolo Cafe. He gets the Italian brand IMS to make the baskets.

I have their 18g basket 54mm for my bambino. Note that it is a generous basket. I can fill it easily with 20g with enough headspace. They also do the 58mm baskets.

    • There is no need to change the BDB baskets. They are already very good.

Just dont use the single basket. Double all the time. Singles have much less margin for error and are much more tempremental.

      • Thanks. Yeah, I noticed that. But, can you use maybe about 13g on the double basket? Wouldn’t it be more ‘muddy’, leaving too much room with the group head? Or would you grind bit coarse to increase the puck size?

        • Why would you want to dose 13g?

You could, but I would suggest tamping firmer or grinding finer. The double basket has more holes so extraction would be faster.

Id suggest just dosing 18g in the double. Keep things consistent all the time. Besides, 13g vs 18g isnt huge for the person drinking it.

          • @PCHammond: Fair enough.
I’m using 22g for two cups and 13g for single cup for me. I could use 22g and use only a half, but that would be bit of a waste, isn’t it?

            • +1

@Rimus: Why not just drink doubles all the time?

Im not a fan of singles. The single shot baskets are all full of compromise and require a change of technique
