Who Has The Better Fuel Quality?

Saw a post on reddit yesterday and wanted to create a poll similar to the post. Which brand do you think has the better fuel quality if we ignore the price?

    Golden Fleece.

  • I voted BP as my favourite colour is green and everyone damn well knows they have the best muffins

    • +6

Well I voted 7-eleven because there’s a UFO in the advert and if UFOs use Mobil fuel it must be the best…

  • +1

The base fuel is the same given the limited number of refineries around the country, however the additive package may or may not be different.

For example, Caltex Techron advertises that it contains PEA (polyetheramine), if they all were the same, then they all would be advertising the same fact.

    • Or perhaps it makes diddly squat difference so no one else bothers to add it.

    • Unfortunately they also stopped selling Techron addictives in little bottles. So it's probably unpopular.

  • +6

Has anyone tried drinking some to find out which one is better ?

  • +6

    duff
    duff lite
    duff dry

    • +1

      Needs more dog.

  • +1

The quality I look for is the best available price.

  • Only ever put BP Diesel in our i30 MY2010 back in the day, had it on good authority they'd put the most R&D into that particular fuel from a couple of industry insiders.

  • This post has made me question my fuelling behaviours. What did reddit conclude?

  • +1

Going to BP for the extra Qantas FF points, otherwise the cheapest around me.

  • +7

    I only use BP98
My car is a modified turbo and when I had it tuned and put on a dyno they said run a few tanks of BP98 beforehand and come in with a tank of it, I will get a better result if I do.

I can run other 98 fuels without any damage but would lose a few KW if I do, if I wasn't able to get BP then Shell should be my next choice.
I asked a few questions on why and was told the base fuel is the same but the additives gives slightly different results.

They said for the everyday car just use whatever is the cheapest of the brand name servos.

I know there will be keyboard experts saying there is no difference but I'm taking the word of the tuner over them and the few cents a litre doesn't worry me, especially with the low millage I do.

    • +2

There is definitely a difference for tuned vehicles, and most petrol heads will agree with you.

    • +2

I tuned mine on 7 eleven fuel so the tune would be 'safe'. If I tuned on a higher quality fuel (BP?) then I filled up with something lower quality I could have issues.

    • -4

Dude who cares about a few KW unless you're racing, it's going to make absolutely zero difference on public roads. Just buy the cheapest U98 there is.

Your 'modified turbo' 300hp to 305hp is piss all difference.

      • Mate you have no clue what you on about…if you're spinning 7-8k revs on 24 pounds of boost tuned to BP ultimate, the difference wont be 'a few kilowatts', it'll be a bloody melted piston!

        • The dude i replied to literally says he would "lose a few KW". So what are you on about?

  • Who uses reddit anymore anyways.

    • All the people at my work that blindly support the current thing love reddit.

      • Do they support the api changes?

  • I think it's a maintenance thing. Because Mobil seems to be slightly more expensive, here anyways, and overall looks spic and span i assume their fuel tanks are better kept and all equipment better maintained.

Imagine drinking the same coffee from dirty cups, or cups with grime in the bottom…. one may make you sick and the other one tastes great. Same coffee.

The fact its legally controlled and regularly tested is not convincing for me as its the same with restaurants offering by, certified by and randomly tested by authorities, some operations just do things better.

Hence BP gets my vote, but i personally don't care too much.

  • While 7/11 does the job, no other petrol provider can match the refreshing taste of BP's offerings.

    • I like the taste of BP's premium diesel, 7/11's has too much of a crude oil taste.

  • +1

whichever is the cheapest on the day i pump 😂

  • I drive an old Landcruiser with a 1HZ.. so I buy what ever is cheapest and as long as the diesel has no water or other contaminates in it I am happy.

As for additives I always add "Diesel Power" to each tank to try and keep fuel system healthy. Also I live in a cold are and we get alpine-ish diesel in winter to reduce risk of waxing but when travelling in Alpine areas I always add a anti-waxing agent myself to avoid paying the alpine diesel tax in servos near the alpine areas and to ensure I really have alpine diesel..

I think if you have a modern CRD vehicle then you need to be a bit more careful with diesel quality…

  • All of the tuning shops I've spoken to in Perth swear by BP and recommend it to their customers.

  • British Petrol is leading. Any royal fans?

  • +2

It's interesting that everyone has really strong stances one way or another, but no-one seems to have hard facts. Until there's an independent quality analysis 'from the pump' it's all just personal opinions.

    https://www.dcceew.gov.au/climate-change/emissions-reduction…
It sounds like there's a framework in place for testing at the pump, but can't find any data on if they actually do it, or have ever done it.

  • I have never not pulled into a servo because of the brand. Whenever I pull into one it's always because it's the most convenient at that point in time or it's the cheapest. And I always fill up with E10.

    • +3

E10 is 3 -5% less efficient than regular unleaded. If the price is only 5c cheaper then it might not even be worth the discount. Try to do the math depending on the cost next time.

      • +1

Or do your own economy measurement. I tracked feul economy for years and never noticed any difference outside normal variation between fuel types. Driving conditions made the most difference.

      • Some cars can't handle 91 octane. E10 is a lot more worth it over 95

  • +6

I'd like to hear from petrol sniffers if there's a difference between brands

  • Its all the same at the depot. The differences come from servos with old/poorly maintained tanks getting contaminated. It changes on a site by site basis, not a brand by brand basis.

If you are super worried about fuel quality, go to new-build servos.

  • This was a long while ago in WA, and refineries have probably changed.

But had a failing fuel pump, use to ping on shell, didn't ping on bp98.
so.. used bp 98 until i changed the fuel pump and both were fine. but it did tell me bp 98 was slightly better.

  • Costco because it's the cheapest.

  • +4

    Q: Scientific question.
    A: Pure speculation.

    • Brand loyalty

  • I AINT EVEN SEEN ANY BP ADS BESIDES THAT APP/GAME WITH A CHICKEN

  • Does anyone have any reason for their votes?

All fuel follow the same quality guidelines. There's no reason for any of them to do anything extra.

The only difference would be their policies around allowing the underground tank to settle after being filled. This is what causes sediment to rise and get into the car, they should be not letting people use it until it's settled but not everywhere does. And all fuel shops are individually run so even the "popular" brands can skimp out on this process if they don't want to lose sales.

    • I did not vote because there isn’t an option for ‘no difference’

  • Here we go again

The outcome is always the same… BP users think they are better than everyone else

  • +3

So who has the better EV Fuel quality? Origin? AGL? Red Energy?

    • +1

      Coal

    • You joke but i have found that i get slightly more range after using a DC fast charger compared to a slower AC charger. No idea why, there shouldn't be a difference but i have noticed one.

  • +1

Im not worried about the best quality fuel because the difference will be tiny.

The concern is bad fuel due to lack of cleaning of fuel storage tanks which can have Fuel altering microbes and Mucus-like sediment caused by ethanol.

The cost of cleaning may have some companies not cleaning tanks as often as needed.

This is why many say if you see fuel being delivered dont fill up.

Also if you can fill up early in the day when its quiet the pumps arent stiring up the tanks to much.

  • +2

My chopper only lands at a 7-Eleven, therefore 7-Eleven is the best.

  • Dumbest question ever

  • I think your pretty much fine anywhere except for united.. hear bad past stories about fuel contamination and spiking with additional ethanol. havent experienced first hand though.

    • Just stories then, probably started by persons who wish united to not get as much business.

    • the most common is toluene- paint thinner. Hard to detect. Used by most "independent" franchises.

      • any evidence?

  • +1

My Mondeo engine sometimes shakes when accelerating and excessive smoke comes out. Is there anything to do with petrol? This happens once every 3 months.

    • Water in fuel perhaps?

      • I fill 98 octane petrol at the same petrol station 95% of the time.

  • +1

Best fuel is AVGAS 100 octane + with anti-knock. It used to be called 5-star.
Other than that t-Butanol at 109 RON- it can be used in petrol engines with minimal alteration versus the more common Methanol (degrades rubber).

    https://www.bp.com/en_au/australia/home/products-services/fu…

  • +2

the best fuel quality is determined by how close I am to the station

  • Why is BP better than Shell?

    • +4

It’s not. It’s marketing. Or Johnny the engine tuner off the internet says BP is better so it must be.

      • That's what i thought. Thansk mate for replying.

    • Years ago i used Shell and in the morning my car struggles to start. Asked my mechanic and he recommended BP, and since then I've been using BP and no more struggle in starting the car in the morning.
I've used Costco's as well, and i didn't get any issue with it as well.
I haven't tried the others to compare, but for me, never again using shell

  • +1

    My personal experience, BP≈Shell≈Costco>Ample>7-11
Long distance driving from Mel to Adl, tried all these 4 fuel. Car model is Kia carnival. BP and Shell is around 8-8.5. Ample is around 10. 7-11 is more than 11. All freeway and all using 91 fuel.
Using 2.5L forester in Mel daily. BP and shell is around 10. Ample is around 11.5 and 7-11 is more than 12.
I know the oil itself is same but additive is totally different. We are actually compare additive insteal of fuel.

    • +1

37.5+% difference, purely on additives on bog standard 91 in a Kia Carnival? Wow! Unbelievable even.

  • who ecver is closest and if i need qantas point or not

  • I remember a Whirlpool post from a oil/gas worker 10+ years ago who said BP and Shell have the same supply chain and that it was only BASF additives in the BP formula that made them different.

If I don't use BP or Shell then I'll go with a 7-eleven because they have seem to do proper maintenance on their tanks.

I stopped using Metro and other branded petrol stations years ago because I got contaminated fuel when trying to save 15c/L.

  • +2

For whoever have voted, does any of you have any evidence to proof the company you've voted for?

    • Personal experience from starting car in the morning. Worst for me is Shell.
All good with BP and costco

  • +1

    Its the same picture meme

  • metro.

  • I thought all fuels were the same until I went to Costco.
Amazing experience driving with Costco fuel. It changed my life.

    • Changed how?

      • The fact that he saved 20c/l added to the experience….

        • I saved about $800 on fuel last year and probably saved double that on drinks and snacks i.e. no $4.5 drinks at the fuel checkout at Costco.

  • Have driven mainly high performance Skylines over the last 20 years and I can really tell the difference between tanks

I clicked BP before I saw United there.

Would be great if I could change my vote to United.

  • +2

Back when i still had my R34 skyline, It ran like poo on anything other than BP Ultimate. I'm not sure what the difference was but it was very noticeable.

  • There’s different types of ELECTRICITY?
    Didn’t think so.

Edit: Can’t wait for BP to sell electricity.
    Edit: BP already does: https://www.bp.com/en_au/australia/home/products-services/bp…

  • My Dad's old mechanic advised to avoid BP & fill-up with Caltex

  • +3

    Ex gilbarco guy here.

The biggest more visible difference across these is the age of tanks and pumps, or dispensers if there is a submersed pump.

Would suggest BP then Ampol but difference is negligible on petrol. United servos were run to the ground I terms of maintenance of forecourt and underground equipment. May have improved since but doubt it.

You can get a terrible servo anywhere irrespective of branding.

  • Glad to see BP representing, however AMPOL is a close second for me; interesting to see it polling low here.

  • +1

BP because of their points system and they are often the cheapest. I feel like Shell is overpriced at times. Yes, they have FlyBuys, but that is a pain to claim. I only go to Shell to get my bottled gas.

  • Surprised EG/Ampol has such little votes considering they are literally everywhere.
