  • It would be good if they gave it in a box to keep all the components together.

  • They send it in a lovely cardboard one for free?

    • Yep, this is right. I just use the cardboard box.

Will this be suitable for my global knife set?

    • +5

Yes and No. These kits are generally good for beginners however perfomance is mediocre. The stones are very soft making it difficult to get a very sharp edge and the stone will wear quickly, especially if the knife material is on the harder end of the scale. They will sharpen much better than a pull-through sharpener and not damage the knives.

If you want to do it properly get a good 1000 grit stone like a Chosera and a thick diamond plate for flattening. It should last you a lifetime or more if you're just sharpening at home.

      • Thanks very much for the detailed response

Sharpening a global knife is difficult - the technique is different for convex edges than others. Do a bit of research first.

  • Is this kit ok for sharpening my chisels?

    • It comes with a Chisel attachment and yes, it'll do the job.

Do not buy this, they are rubbish. Just wait for Shapton pro when they’re on special, or alternatively buy a King or Naniwa or Suehiro. If you are beginner just get one 1000 grit stone and learn from that, if you have more money to spend get an Atoma diamond plate 400 grit as a flattening stone.
As your skill improved you can than add other grit as needed. Shoot me a pm if you have more questions in regards to sharpening or sharpening stone, I’m no expert by any means, still learning and we can learn together.

Agreed. Buy once, cry once. Consider sharpening stones as tools, get quality and they will last and give you a better result.

    • Yep, this is for the learner on their L plates. Forgiving, but not very lasting.
Saying that, it's good value, given the little bits and bobs that you get for $50.

This stone is actually worse for beginner, the feedback you get from the stone is all wrong, it dishes quickly and if you’re not careful your knife can get caught in the stone and you could cut yourself, it doesn’t sharpen your knife properly so you don’t know if you have enough strokes or not and you could easily misaligned the angle, those 1000,3000,6000 grit means absolute nothing, it actually will destroy your good knife.

All this from my own experience, luckily I didn’t dwell too long on this stones, after a month or two I moved to Japanese whetstone and wonder why I’m being so cheap and thought it’s a good idea to learn with this cheap stone. I guess you get what you paid for. And I promised myself not to let anyone, especially beginner to buy this cheap rubbish stone.

$50 is money, better use towards buying something that could last and actually useful.

In fact I just show a good deal on Amazon Jp for Naniwa, I’ll post it soon.

        • yeah actually you're right. It's the feedback that allows you to learn and the soft stones don't provide that.

    • What are your thoughts on the jigs like the Work Sharp Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener. I just want something easy to get my knifes sharp.

      • +1

Jigs are good for hunting and folding knife, unfortunately for a chef knife you need to learn how to sharpen using a whetstone.

        • thanks looks like ill have to learn
