Now you're going to upset the Elon fanboys…. 😂

        • Looks like the fanboys finally got out of bed for the day…

@jv: They probably have a WhatsApp group where they post links to Ozbargain comments so they can all downvote them haha. Copium is a hell of a drug.

'Better brands' ? Please enlighten me of these in the EV space? I'll help…there's none better.

      • +3

I am sorry but are you an idiot or just ignorant? Have you even driven a Tesla? number one electric car on the market lets have a look o look its Tesla's, I have driven other evs they are not better in teh slightest they are much much worse. Please enlighten us with actual facts next time.

        • I drove an M3P for 4 weeks and I drive my mate's M3LR every now and then. You literally have no argument other than "it's the no.1 selling EV". Like cool, there are enough sheep in the world who bought it to bring it's rank up, doesn't mean it's better than the others on the market.

I have driven other evs they are not better in teh slightest they are much much worse.

          oh really? how so?

          • +2

            @cheekymonkey97: My 2 cents.

I've briefly owned the Kia EV6 GT Line AWD, and also briefly owned the Model Y.
I haven't tried the Ioniq 5, but it should be relatively similar to the EV6. I didn't quite rate it. Felt heavy, interior cabin is a bit tight, wasn't super impressed. Model Y RWD was nice, felt like I sat a bit taller, better visibility, powertrain is surprisingly strong. But the centre screen and lack of HUD or driver-centric display I didn't like. So I got rid of it too.

I don't think there are any perfect EV cars at this point in time.
I haven't driven a Model 3 or Ioniq 5. I haven't tried the BYD ATTO3 either, but I'm on the Facebook page and there are a lot of random design issues and software bugs that I wouldn't expect to see in a car. It might be due to its infancy in the RHD market.

We have a deposit down as an EOI for the Kia EV9, but I won't hold my breath as to whether I'll like it or not.

            • +4

@CrushJelly: Wow, you change cars more than i change my underpants!

The EV9 looks awesome. First genuine full size SUV (That and the polestar 3). The design does not look super slippery, so might be an issue if you're planning regular Syd-Melb trips at 110km/ph.

              • +1

                @hothed:

The design does not look super slippery, so might be an issue if you're planning regular Syd-Melb trips at 110km/ph

Looks can be deceiving. It's got a drag coefficient of 0.28 :-)

            • @CrushJelly: you can buy a center screen accessory which is installed above the streering colomn for people that need a speed limit and controls in front of there face but I have never needed it I like have a clean dash. I couldn't stand the EV6 AND Iqonic it was too many screens clunky crappy software that never works half the time, and just over all a terriable experience.. having FSD and autopilot how ever is amazing no other car manufacture seems to do this well, (or at all in some cases) I know many people that have Kia EV and after 3 months of owning instantly regreted it and got a model 3 performance you just can't say no to 0 to 100 in 3 seconds, BYD don't get me started on them in china they are great but in Australia, if you have nothing that goes wrong with them you sweet but the minute somethign goes wrong your pretty muich screwed heard some horror stories on forums saying how bad customer service is and how hard parts are to get. I would 100% stay away from BYD at least for now.

            • @CrushJelly: Interior of the M3 or MY looks cheap like a $20k car. Just look at the steering wheel; so cheap. No mirror or quick AC adjustment, easy wiper adjustment buttons. have to constantly take eye off road as no HUD or instrument cluster.

Wind noise and creaking apparent even in a demo car.

Is it worth $65 or $72k no. Is it worth $45k marginally. MY RAV4 has better build quality and shock absorbers. $43K.

Tesla definitely better on handling though.

            • @CrushJelly: Model 3/Y HUD is about $150 to $400. Easy DIY install.

          • @cheekymonkey97: 4 weeks straight? did you charge it up yourself and use it like it was you own?

Have you driven other evs and actually use them for a few weeks? Not test driven one?

I suggest you take serveral of them on road trips and see how you go. Please do because I would have to see the look on you face when you find out why other evs are rubbish compared to a tesla.

other evs are just bastardised versions of a combusion engine cars, riping out the motor and puting in an electric one. Not the mention you getting less for more cost on an ev that isn't a tesla, in Australia. You need to stop looking at spec sheets and see what its like to use these cars, test driving does nothing when it comes to the usablity of an EV. Tesla cars aren't perfect but no other car manufacture fixs issues in the manufacturing process in a month, they dish out a new improved model every month, other manufactures stuggle to have a new updated car in a year. They are leaps and bounds over any other car manufacture and its only been 10 years. Rather than pay millions of dollars on marketing like other car dealers they actulaly don't advertise AT ALL Tesla spend all there money on research and evolpment and manufacturing. That is i why they have there own manufacturing process make and design alot of there part and have there OWN charging infrustructure. Of which every other EV manuacture are now beging to be apart of doing deals so they can have the same standard charging standard as tesla.

            • @kungfuman: Most evs are rubbish because they can't super charge using the tesla chargers. Road trips would be a nightmare. My RAV4 has range of 1000km on single 5 minute charge. It can continuously run to melbourne without any stops as the second driver will continue while 1st driver takes a rest.

              • @Naigrabzo: Once you stop sipping Dino juice, it's hard to go back.

I don't feel you missed out on much though, not too will be able to take advantage of this offer.
Travel with an EV, book a place with a garage, then take your portable charger and extension lead. Free Charging while you sleep.

      • book a place with a garage

        Free Charging while you sleep.

What do you recommend booking for free?

        • +2

lol.. fair point… I don't actually have an EV, but as a cheap skate, I noticed that most places I stay tend to have a garage and powerpoint.

          • @UltimateAI: The owner might flip out if they find out you have taken large chunks of electricity without asking.

            • +2

@Naigrabzo: Fair point, it's only a 10A plug, running the Air-Con, personal heater consumes far more power,.

        • Caravan park with powered site

          • @FreeAFBoi: Nice. I would love to stay in a smelly caravan park and I drive a Tesla.

      • +1

Thanks mate. Yes I think I didn't miss out too much too… anyway, I think it's only 1 or 2 Tesla charges here in Adelaide… won't queue up for it.
There are other free charges around which has less queue time. Mainly charging the car at home with solar.

    • No, it's just their inventory is overflowing. Need to clear as much as possible before end of quarter (for states)

      • I was referring to the charging prices, not the cars.

        • Think this is a separate thing to clear their cars. Think any charging rate charges will be a separate change.

          • -1

            @Pcoder: probably…

          • @Pcoder: So any change to the charge for charging is seperate to the lack of charging for charging in this offer?

            • @nitens: This is all an accounting trick. They can say we sold our cars at x price and have little inventory, but truthfully they had to discount to get rid of the stock.

I was just saying any charging price changes are independent of this promo and I don't know any changes that will happen.

  • +28

You'll be charging 95%+ of the time from home, possibly also for free (solar). Probably not that good a deal for most people.

      • +13

Electricity from solar is increasing? Try again, troll.

        • -6

How many Tesla owners generate all their electricity from solar?

          • +13

@jv: Probably quite a few, people with solar panels would most likely also be the early adapters to EVs

          • +6

@jv: not 'all' but I've managed to generate between 75-85% of the electricity used charging my car for a few consecutive (summer) months, also ChargeHQ is a wonderful app if you have the supporting hardware.

            • -5

              @ry34:

I've managed to generate between 75-85% of the electricity

              most people don't

Also, solar wont work in Melbourne past 5pm in the Winter.

            • +2

@ry34: Are they charging a subscription for app now?

          • +1

            @jv: Me.

          • @jv: Likely the majority. The venn of the two market groups is almost a circle.

          • +1

@jv: many are cashed up and wouldn't care. As if poor people drive teslas. :)

          • +1

@jv: We are at 97% charged from solar since we’ve had it (4months). You’d be surprised how easy it is especially with an app like ChargeHQ that just turns on/off/voltage up/down based on your solar output.

For people who drive to the office daily, I agree more tricky. Even so one charge can last a week of driving or more then you top up by solar on the weekend.

It’s much easier than you think

            • -1

              @Geoffreys:

We are at 97% charged from solar since we’ve had it

You are by far in the minority.

No sun available to charge if you get home after 5pm here

        • Solar power will actually increase in the future as sun becomes a red giant.

          • -1

            @Naigrabzo:

as sun becomes a red giant.

The surface temperature of a red giant is about half that of our sun at present…

          • @Naigrabzo: That's gonna effect the nice paint work on my new Tesla!

        • +2

Why do you bother? He has no life other than trolling on an online bargain forum. See how pathetic that reads?

      • +4

They're still paying less than I am in petrol.

        • +2

YES Free charging in Queensland alot of places do free charging. all 32amp chargers tesla and chargefox and a few others I know locally I haven't paid a cent for charging my model 3. So yes 100% less cost than petrol. If you live in Queensland don't know about other states.

          • @kungfuman: what are the free chargers in queensland apart from the ones in QUT and UQ? did you just find them in plugshare?

            • @polarq: yes all on plugshare they are at shopping centers even businesss ont eh side of the road. alot of them are tesla chargers and chargefox (byo cable) too the chargefox ones are at Coles mostly and have coles branding all over them. I get my charging done near my local shoping center whcih is the hyperdome 4 chargers there.

I recommend if you ever go there learn when people charge and not charge because it can get full at certain times and people line up for them too. I usually get it done very early because I am there usually 4 or 5 hours to get a full charge on a 32amp 22kw tesla charger. But I can name many other free charging locations if you need ones closer to you.

More people in queensland buy evs once they find out there are so many free chargers.

          • -1

@kungfuman: pretty sure someone is paying for the electricity and the cost is coming back to the taxpayer…

            • +2

@jv: none of the chargers that are free are government funded so no not paid by taxpayer all privately owned free chargers are on private proper like shopping centers. Free is free or 1000s of people wouldn't be using the free chargers and not paying for fuel ever.

              • @kungfuman:

all privately owned free chargers are on private proper like shopping centers

and guess who ends up paying for them…

              • @kungfuman: "…all privately owned free chargers…" some people clearly do not understand how the system works

                • +1

@SurprisedPanda: how about you explain with evidence that it is government owned then? Explain the system, rather than saying nothing.

          • @kungfuman: Those free charger days are coming to an end, which I think is for the best. Lots of people charge them leave their car hogging the spot because there’s no idle fee.

Idle fees are the key until chargers are so ubiquitous that it doesn’t matter anymore

            • +1

@Geoffreys: no in Queensland its not. they are increasing the free chargers, and we don't have that issue here no hogging no lines

      • +1

Only if you don't shop around, Sumo are not increasing their rates, only 24.6c per kwh, but if you had an EV would move to TOU billing and enjoy off-peak pricing. Or just charge using your own solar, better than the measly 6c export most providers offer.

        • wow where do you live thats a total rip off.

        • -1

their rates, only 24.6c per kwh

          Only ???????

          I'm paying 16.100 c/kWh

    • +3

Unless you live in VIC and work from home… where there is no sun in winter and the heater is always on! At least its 100% consumption lol..

    • -1

You would need a pretty big solar array to charge it up.

      • +5

Nah, even a 5kw system will get you there happily for the average driver.

        • -1

5kw system might generate 20kwh over the entire day, in summer. Tesla battery is 55kwh so you wouldn’t half fill it. I mean it’s for for topping up but not really comparable to free supercharging for 3 months.

          • +3

@Brick Tamland: Agreed. It’s just next to no one’s doing 420km every day. Day in day out. Most do less than 80km and even a small system will cover that. There’s always exceptions but most can cover their daily drive entirely from a small system.

          • +1

@Brick Tamland: You would drive 300km each day?

            • @onlinepred: Nope. Maybe 6km but then it’s parked at work away from the solar.

              • @Brick Tamland: Just stop past a shopping centre one day when you do the groceries ;-)

                • @onlinepred: True enough. I think an EV would suit me perfectly but there’s nothing I like.

                  • @Brick Tamland: Used Model 3 is where I will be heading. Never liked them until I drove one for a few days.

                    • @onlinepred: I probably should test drive one.

                      The BYD Seal has potential.

                      • @Brick Tamland: If it drives like the dolphin, it’s a no for me hehe. Seems decent value as a new car though.
